Trans woman says she was ‘humiliated’ after CVS pharmacist refused to fill her hormone prescription
A transgender woman said she was humiliated after a pharmacist at an Arizona CVS refused to fill her hormone prescription in April.
Hilde Hall, who detailed the incident in a blog post published on ACLU’s website on Thursday, said she was elated after she received her first prescription for hormone therapy from the doctor.

However, when she went to a CVS in her hometown of Fountain Hills, Arizona, to fill the script, she was shocked by what came next.
Hall said the pharmacist “refused to fill one of the prescriptions needed to affirm my identity,” adding that the unidentified pharmacist did not give her “a clear reason for the refusal.”
She said the pharmacist then proceeded to ask her questions in front of other customers, which she said left her “embarrassed and distressed.”
“I nearly started crying in the middle of the store,” she recalled. “I didn’t want to answer why I had been prescribed this hormone therapy combination by my doctor. I felt like the pharmacist was trying to out me as transgender in front of strangers. I just froze and worked on holding back the tears.”
After the encounter, Hall asked the pharmacist again for her prescription back but he refused once more.
“I left the store feeling mortified,” she wrote.
Hall said she called her doctor when she got home explaining the situation. The office called the CVS for Hall to get the prescription filled but again the pharmacist refused.
Eventually, Hall got her prescription filled at a local Walgreens without a problem.
“I transferred all of my prescriptions there so that I never again have to see the pharmacist who discriminated against me,” she wrote.

CVS Statement on Arizona Store Incident
Hall said she contacted CVS’ corporate office many times to complain about the incident but said nothing was done. On Thursday, Hall said she decided to file a complaint to the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy saying something needed to be done.
AZ Central pointed out that Arizona “allows pharmacies and pharmacists to refuse to fill a prescription on religious or moral grounds.” However, pharmacists are required under state law to inform the company “in advance about any religious convictions.”
CVS released a statement regarding the incident.
“CVS Health extends its sincere apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring. The conduct of the pharmacist, who is no longer employed by CVS, violated company policies and does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care,” the statement read.
Hall declined to take legal action against CVS after she received an apology.

Religious adoption agency can’t exclude gay parents, judge rules
In a ruling hailed as “historic,” a federal judge sided with the city of Philadelphia and same-sex foster and adoptive parents.
A federal judge on Friday ruled against a religious organization that refused to place foster children with gay families on religious grounds.
Judge Petrese B. Tucker of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania ruled that the city of Philadelphia can require the foster and adoption agencies with which it contracts to abide by the city’s nondiscrimination policies. The decision marks the first time a federal court has ruled that such agencies may not turn away same-sex couples who don’t meet the agencies’ religious criteria.
The plaintiffs in the case — Catholic Social Services and three foster families with whom the agency works — were quick to file an appeal.
The dispute began in early March when the commissioner of Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services (DHS) discovered that two of the 30 foster care agencies with which it has contracts — Catholic Social Services and Bethany Christian Services — had policies that deny their publicly funded services to same-sex couples.
Following this discovery, DHS stopped working with the two organizations, noting that their policies regarding LGBTQ families violated the nondiscrimination clause included in the contract they entered into with DHS.
Catholic Social Services and three foster families then filed a lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia, claiming, among other things, that the city’s suspension of referrals of new children to their care violated their religious and free speech rights.
Friday’s ruling found that Catholic Social Services’ practices violated the Philadelphia Fair Practices Ordinance, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, and therefore the agency was not entitled to continue to receive public funding. According to court documents, Catholic Social Services currently has a $19.4 million contract with Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services.

Anthony Anderson under investigation for allegedly assaulting a woman
I’m hoping this is NOT true. I’m going to keep up with this case. I’m sorry but SOME people are using this #metoo movement as an excuse to file lawsuits and false claims of rape. There are real victims out here being raped and molested. Sexual assault cannot be taken lightly .
Black-ish star Anthony Anderson is under criminal investigation by the LAPD for allegedly assaulting a woman who catered an event that the actor put on. Anderson is denying the allegation.
The Blast reported that sources familiar with the situation claimed that the woman met with Anderson for a second time after she’d catered the event to discuss future opportunities to work together. That is when the woman claimed the assault happened. The women later filed a police report with the Hollywood Division of the LAPD.
In a statement to People, a representative for Anderson refuted the claims saying, “It’s unfortunate that anyone can file a police report whether it is true or false. The authorities have not contacted Anthony or any of his representatives about this matter. Anthony unequivocally disputes the claim.”
Reports claim that the woman delayed coming forward when it happened, but felt comfortable doing so months later, mostly thanks to the Me Too movement. This movement, helmed by friend of The Root, Tarana Burke gives women the space and support to come forward with their claims of sexual assault within the industry and beyond.
This isn’t the first time Anderson has faced assault accusations. It’s been reported that Anderson and an assistant director for Hustle & Flow were accused of raping an extra on the set of the film, but charges against them were later dropped.

Several members of Indiana family among those killed in Branson duck boat crash
BRANSON, Missouri – Several members of an Indiana family were on a duck boat that capsized in Branson, Missouri, Thursday night, killing 17 people.
The Missouri governor’s office confirmed to FOX59 that eleven members of the family, including several children, were aboard the boat and nine of them passed away in the incident.
The pastor of Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church said the family was close to his church, but weren’t members. A family member shared a photo that showed some of the victims.
FOX59 spoke on the phone with one of the family members that survived the incident, Tia Coleman. The other surviving family member is her nephew.
“My heart is very heavy. Out of 11 of us, only two of us surviving – that’s me and my nephew,” said Tia. “I lost all my children, my brother-in-law.”
Tia says the captain of the boat told them “don’t worry about grabbing the life jackets – you won’t need them,” so none of the family members grabbed them.
“However in doing that, when it was time to grab them, it was too late and I believe that a lot of people could have been spared,” said Tia.
Investigators said stormy weather contributed to the crash. A thunderstorm brought winds of 50 to 65 mph to the area shortly before the first 911 call came in at 7:09 p.m. A severe thunderstorm warning had been issued for Branson at 6:32 p.m. Thursday.
The boat was carrying 31 people, and 14 survived. Investigators said earlier Friday that 13 people had been killed while four were still missing. By Friday afternoon, the death toll stood at 17 after the bodies of the four remaining missing passengers were found.
Passengers on a nearby boat described the scene as chaotic and said the winds picked up suddenly, sending debris flying everywhere.
The NTSB, Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies are investigating.
