Dad accused of shoving baby wipe down infant’s throat, leaving child in critical condition
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – A Florida father has been charged with attempted murder after police say he jammed a balled-up baby wipe down his infant son’s throat, according to WFTS.
Michael Hurley, 32, was alone with the baby Tuesday night when the child’s mother came home from work to find the 5-month-old choking, Tarpon Springs police said.
The boy’s mother picked him up and began screaming for help. A neighbor ran over and the two women managed to pull a blood-soaked baby wipe from the infant’s throat, according to The Tampa Bay Times.
The 5-month-old is currently in critical condition at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, according to the paper, and is breathing with the help of a ventilator.
When asked how the baby wipe ended up blocking the child’s airway, Hurley told police he was wiping around the boy’s mouth but he “cannot remember” and “does not know what happened,” according to WFTS.
Police said the wipe was completely saturated with blood and appeared to have been wadded into a tight ball.
Hurley is being held at Pinellas County Jail on $500,000 bail.
California 4-year-old accidentally shoots, kills 2-year-old cousin
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. – A 2-year-old California girl died after a 4-year-old boy somehow got hold of a gun and accidentally shot her Friday morning, authorities said.
About 9:15 a.m., deputies and medical personnel responded to a report of a 2-year-old shooting victim in the 2700 block of Duffy Street, in the Muscoy area of San Bernardino County, according to Cindy Bachman of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
When first responders arrived, they confirmed the toddler had been shot, she said.
The little girl was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead about an hour later.
Her name has not yet been released.
It was not immediately known how the boy got hold of the gun, according to Bachman.
“Any information about the gun, where it was, how the child got ahold of it, who it belongs to – all of those details will be determined during the investigation,” she said.
The two children lived in the same house and were identified by the Sheriff’s Department as cousins.
A handful of adults were inside the home either when the shooting occurred or shortly after. Investigators have taken them to a sheriff’s station for interviews, according to Bachman.
Authorities also have to do the necessary paperwork to legally enter the residence and conduct the investigation, she added.
Bachman noted that everyone was being “very cooperative.”
No other information was immediately released.
