Woman Bleeds To Death After Rooster Pecked At Her Leg While She Collected Eggs
A woman bled to death after a rooster pecked at her leg while she was collecting eggs on her property in Australia.
In what experts described as a “fatal rooster attack,” the unnamed 76-year-old woman was picking up eggs at her home in rural Australia when the bird began pecking at her lower left leg, according to a case study published in the journal Forensic Science, Medicine, and Pathology.
By nipping at the woman, the bird triggered a significant hemorrhage, causing the woman to collapse and die. The victim had a history of high blood pressure; hyperlipidemia where the blood contains too much fat; diabetes; and varicose veins.
An autopsy focused on her lower left, which was covered in dried blood. Examiners discovered two small, deep cuts on her leg. One was above a large varicose vein.
The woman’s death was put down to exsanguination, or her blood being drained from her body from her varicose vein following the attack.
Researchers wrote in the paper: “This case demonstrates that even relatively small domestic animals may be able to inflict lethal injuries in individuals if there are specific vascular vulnerabilities present.”
Roger Byard, co-author of the case study and Professor of Pathology at the University of Adelaide told Australia’s ABC that attacks by roosters are rare. However, he said the incident “made us realize how vulnerable the elderly are, [varicose veins] are very easy to damage.”
Byard told the broadcaster: “I’ve had a number of cases where people have just been wandering around in their home and just run into furniture which has caused a small injury.”
He argued: “Older people are also not as good at defending themselves against animal attacks, their balance might not be as good.”
He told Australian news site 10 Daily: “It is possible if the woman had put her thumb over the hole and called for help she could have survived.”
According to the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, weakness or damage to vein walls and valves can cause varicose veins. This includes when blood pressure increases in the veins. They often occur in the legs, but can also affect the rectum; testicles; esophagus; stomach or liver. Pregnancy, obesity and constipation are linked to varicose veins. Older people, those who sit or stand for long periods or are sedentary, and individuals with a family history, are are also at risk.
Lifestyle changes such as reaching a healthy weight, sitting correctly, and being physically active can treat varicose veins, as well as wearing compression stockings, or taking medication. Some people may need to undergo surgery.

Kroger ‘respectfully’ asks shoppers to stop openly carrying guns in stores
Kroger is following Walmart’s lead.
The Ohio-based supermarket giant on Tuesday asked customers to stop openly carrying firearms in its stores, just hours after Walmart made a similar request.
“Kroger is respectfully asking that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores, other than authorized law enforcement officers,” Jessica Adelman, group vice president of corporate affairs, said in a statement.
“We are also joining those encouraging our elected leaders to pass laws that will strengthen background checks and remove weapons from those who have been found to pose a risk for violence.”
In its statement, Walmart requested that its customers not openly carry firearms.
In an open letter from CEO Doug McMillon to employees, the chain also said it would stop selling some types of ammunition.
The change came in the wake of several mass shootings — including one last month at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart that left 22 people dead.

High School Athlete Named De’Coldest ToEvaDoIt Crawford Goes Viral
A Louisiana student-athlete made national headlines this month—not for his performance on the football field, but for his unique name: De’Coldest ToEvaDoIt Crawford.
It all started when the Green Oaks High School sophomore spoke to local media outlet KTLA about his prospects for the upcoming football season. Crawford spoke about the team’s additions and the challenges they’ll face as they try to secure a district championship.
“The first couple of games, they need experience,” the wide receiver said. “So the first couple of games we’ll just carry the load, and then the rest of the season they’ll get comfortable with playing, and we’ll do some big things.”
Shortly after the clip was posted, screenshots of Crawford’s name began circulating across social media.
There’s no doubt that having such a name comes with a lot of pressure, but the teen says it reflects his family’s confidence in his abilities.
“My mom came up with my name. She named me this because she knew I would be the best athlete out of everyone in the family,” Crawford told 247Sports, before addressing all the attention he’s been receiving. “I love the fame everyone’s giving me on social media…keep it going.”

Picky-eater teen goes blind after diet of Pringles, white bread, fries and processed meats
UNITED KINGDOM — Eating a diet of French fries, Pringles and white bread was enough to make one teenage boy lose his sight, according to a case study published in a medical journal.
Scientists from the University of Bristol examined the case of a young patient whose extremely picky eating led to blindness, and have warned of the dangers of a poor diet.
The unidentified patient told doctors he had only eaten fries from the fish and chip shop, Pringles potato chips, white bread, slices of processed ham and sausage since elementary school, and he avoided foods with certain textures. He first visited a doctor at age 14, complaining of tiredness, according to a case report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Monday.
He wasn’t taking any medication, had a normal BMI and height, and showed no visible signs of malnutrition.
Doctors discovered low vitamin B12 levels and anemia, treating the patient with vitamin B12 injections and offering dietary advice.
One year later there were signs of hearing loss and vision symptoms, but doctors did not find the cause.
His vision had worsened to the point of blindness by 17 years of age, and doctors identified vitamin B12 deficiency, low copper and selenium levels, a high zinc level, reduced vitamin D level and bone level density, according to a statement from the University of Bristol.
By this stage, vision damage was permanent.
Researchers from Bristol Medical School and the Bristol Eye Hospital examined the case and concluded that the patient suffered nutritional optic neuropathy, a dysfunction of the optic nerve.
In developed countries it is mostly caused by bowel problems or medication that interferes with the absorption of nutrients, and it is rarely caused entirely by poor diet because food is readily available.
In some places, malnutrition caused by poverty, war and drought is linked to higher rates of nutritional optic neuropathy, according to a statement.
The condition is reversible if treated early but can lead to blindness if no action is taken.
“Our vision has such an impact on quality of life, education, employment, social interactions, and mental health,” said study lead author Denize Atan, an ophthalmologist at Bristol Medical School and Bristol Eye Hospital.
“This case highlights the impact of diet on visual and physical health, and the fact that calorie intake and BMI are not reliable indicators of nutritional status.”
The researchers say that poor diet and reduced intake of minerals caused vision loss in this case, and warn that nutritional optic neuropathy could become more common due to the consumption of junk food.
They also warned vegans to make sure to supplement for vitamin B12 to avoid deficiency.
To prevent similar cases, doctors should ask patients about their dietary history as part of routine clinical examinations, the researchers urged.

Men mistook homeless man for sex offender, beat him to death
MODESTO, Calif. – Police in Modesto say two men beat a homeless man to death with their bare hands after mistaking him for a sex offender.
Jace Decker, 63, was often found sitting on a bench in Garrison Park.
“He minded his own business for the most part. He just was going through his own life struggles and different adversities,” friend Donnie Bibbs told KTXL.
Acquaintances say Decker was a husband with a broken heart.
“Pretty decent life and everything and, now, I think he was more so just hurt over losing his wife,” Bibbs said. “He just never really bounced back from that.”
Decker was attacked on Aug. 10, and died a few weeks later.
Investigators say two men, Matthew Arguello and Ruben Rosales, confronted Decker in Griffin Park, believing he was a registered sex offender.
Decker was not a sex offender, police said.
Investigators say during the attack, Decker pleaded with the suspects to stop. Instead, police said the two men beat him until he was unconscious. The attack was unprovoked and gang motivated, according to investigators.
Arguello is now in custody but investigators say Rosales is a dangerous man and on the run.
“Know the facts before you just step into the situation and try to handle,” Christopher Brown, who knew Decker, told KTXL. “Like, you’re not God, or you’re not law enforcement.”

Triplet says he accidentally fatally stabbed brother while cooking
COLUMBUS, Ga. — A Georgia triplet accused of fatally stabbing one of his brothers says the stabbing was a mistake and he only meant to hug his brother.
News outlets report 36-year-old Kenneth Jernigan made his first court appearance Thursday after telling police he accidentally killed his brother, Kevin Jernigan. Jernigan was charged last week with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.
Columbus Police Department Cpl. Matt Sitler says Kenneth Jernigan told officers they were in the kitchen making food when he went to hug Kevin Jernigan, but instead stabbed him.
Sitler says the evidence doesn’t support Kenneth Jernigan’s story. Sitler says autopsy results are still pending.
The third brother, Keith Jernigan, testified that he didn’t witness the stabbing.
The case was bound over to Superior Court.
