Target launches same-day delivery across the US
Purchases are delivered in as little as one hour for $9.99.
Target is expanding its same-day delivery service to just about everyone. The giant retailer announced today that customers in 47 states will now be able to place orders on Target.com and have them delivered in as little as one hour. Deliveries will cost a flat fee of $9.99 and will be fulfilled by Shipt, a delivery startup acquired by Target in 2017.
Target customers have a selection of 65,000 items for delivery to their door through Target.com. The retailer has marked same-day eligible items on its website so shoppers can easily browse items that can be delivered that day and add them to their cart. While deliveries will cost $9.99, if you find yourself frequently using the service, you can become a Shipt member for $99 per year and get free delivery on purchases of over $35.
Target’s move into same-day shipping shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, seeing as its biggest competitors have also made advances in the space. Walmart has been working on same-day delivery service for groceries but has struggled to get it the service the ground. Amazon has also experimented with same-day delivery at times. Both Amazon and Walmart offer next-day delivery on some items.

‘Target Teresa’ caught on video harassing black customers
A white Target customer was caught on camera harassing a group of black shoppers in Tennessee, telling them they “don’t belong here” and accusing them of inappropriately talking about sex in public.
“You were talking about sex in public. Are you having sex in public because that’s what you screamed out loud,” the woman — quickly nicknamed “Target Teresa” and “Target Tammy” online — says in since-deleted footage posted to Facebook on Friday.
The women whom “Target Teresa” is accosting try to explain that they were just talking about jazz legend Eartha Kitt’s character in the 1992 comedy “Boomerang” and even turn around to try to disengage.
But the NASA sweatshirt-wearing accuser isn’t having it.
“I didn’t realize talking about sex in public was normal. I know you’re trained on lying. You’re perfect for the court system because you’re all trained liars,” she says.
During the approximately four minutes of the altercation caught on tape, “Target Teresa” also calls the women “abusive.”
One of the women in the group, who didn’t want to be identified, told Yahoo Lifestyle she was “confused” by the whole incident.
“My cousin and I were visiting my best friend from out of state and we stopped by Target to buy a phone charger,” she said. “I told my friend to try on a hat that looked like something Eartha Kitt’s character would wear in the film and she said no because her character had sex with a younger man.”
Then “Target Teresa” popped her head over the accessories display.
“She told us, ‘You shouldn’t be talking about sex,’” the woman told the outlet. “We were confused — then, she came around the corner with her shopping cart and started ranting, ‘You don’t belong here’ and calling our conversation inappropriate.”
Amazon drops $25 free shipping minimum for all US holiday shoppers
Amazon, Target, Walmart, and others are fighting hard for your holiday dollars.
Amazon’s latest perk will be available not just for its Prime members but for all holiday shoppers this year. The online retailer announced that starting today, November 5, all US-based Amazon customers can get free shipping with no minimum purchase amount. While the perk lasts only for a “limited time,” Amazon explains that the promotion will affect orders that arrive in time for the Christmas holiday.
Typically, Amazon imposes a $25 minimum order amount for non-Prime members to get free shipping. This promotion waives that minimum for the time being and puts Amazon in step with competitor Target, which waived its $35 order minimum and now offers free two-day shipping to all customers through December 22. Walmart, arguably Amazon’s biggest competitor in the US, has kept its $35 minimum threshold for free shipping for this holiday season (so far, at least).
Amazon is trying to capture as much of the holiday shopping market as possible as it faces growing competition from the likes of Target, Walmart, and other retailers. Amazon already offers free two-day shipping to its Prime members as a standard benefit, but those customers pay $120 annually for Prime. Amazon raised the price of a Prime membership by $20 earlier this year.
Removing the minimum order amount could convince non-Prime members to shop at Amazon more this holiday season than they might have previously. Amazon has the advantage of inventory, with millions of items eligible for free shipping, while Target and Walmart have thousands. Also, Amazon’s shipping and delivery infrastructure is much larger than that of any other US retailer (Target and Walmart have been expanding and striking up partnerships in order to better match Amazon’s delivery system).
However, Target and Walmart have many more brick-and-mortar locations than Amazon does, even with Whole Foods’ locations counting in Amazon’s favor. Both retailers use their thousands of locations to their advantage by offering services like curbside pickup for grocery orders and special in-store promotions.
Amazon instituted a number of promotions and discounts at Whole Foods after it purchased the specialty grocer for $13.7 billion last year, but most of those deals are for Prime members only. As far as other brick-and-mortar stores go, Amazon has a bookstore, top-rated items stores, and cashierless Amazon Go convenience stores across the country, but the number of physical locations pales in comparison to traditional retailers. Amazon likely hopes that offering free shipping with no strings attached to all will convince more people to do most of their holiday shopping online.
