Mom, 3 kids found dead after school asked for welfare check
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — A woman who was found dead with her three children in her North Dakota home appears to have been struggling with financial problems.
Astra Volk and her children, ranging in age from 6 to 14, were found dead Thursday morning after a school asked police for a welfare check on their Grand Forks home. All had gunshot wounds; police say they aren’t looking for any suspects.
Court records in Grand Forks County list three civil judgments against an Astra F. Volk last year for about $3,750.
A woman by the same name set up a GoFundMe account in late April seeking money to help pay off medical bills. The woman said her wages had been garnished.
The fundraising account had been deleted Friday.

Yeah this Netflix series glamorizes suicide. Before It’s release . The excitement around the show. Critic reviews. And the social media commentary. Was very positive. With a few keyboard gangsta trolls. Putting their asshole opinion in the mix. Everyone has one right? There was the forgotten, the very impressionable. Vulnerable suicidal pre teen. That Teen and that young 20 something college kid. We live in a social media FB LIVE Snapchat IG world. Of monkey see monkey do. Before and after the Netflix premier. Suicide prevention experts. Raised concern lead to a suicide-contagion effect and a spate of copycat attempts. Research published at the end of July 2017 argued that those concerns may have been founded. Google queries about suicide rose by almost 20 percent in 19 days after the show came out, representing between 900,000 and 1.5 million more searches than usual regarding the subject. Reading these statistics is just terrifying. Yes there have been some copycat suicides after these vonrable impressionable young viewers watched Netflix 13 Reasons Why. Two Suicides really got me. Was the two californa teens Bella Herndon and Percila Chi who committed suicide just hours of it’s premiere. In their parents grief they want Netflix to stop airing season 1 and cancel plans of season 2.
One of the parents saying that the Netflix show gives a blueprint for suicide. They said that the Netflix show was a blueprint for suicide. But is it really a blueprint for suicide for EVERY CHILD OR ADULT? Or is it for the vonarable suicidal teen?
That vonarable pre teen. That vonrable young adult. Or that vonrable older adult. Who are unable to distinguish right from wrong. We can’t just blame Netflix programming. On a preisting problem. If WE know of a loved one who is suicidal and has suicidal thoughts. We have to be diligent and know who? what? where? Bullies turn on parents after teen daughter attempts suicide – start bullying the parents
When 13-year-old Rosalie Avila attempted suicide after constant bullying, her parents thought they’d seen the worst — until they started getting bullied themselves.
Charlene and Freddie Avila from Loma Linda, California, found their daughter hanging in her bedroom last week with a suicide note saying she was “sorry,” reports said. Rosalie had been bullied repeatedly for years and the pain finally became too much to handle, CBS Los Angeles reported.
“They told me I was ugly today,” father Freddie recalled reading from Rosalie’s journal, according to the outlet.
“They were making fun of me today about my teeth,” the distraught father went on.
Rosalie’s parents rushed her to a local hospital, where she’s been on a ventilator ever since. They plan to take her off Monday night and donate her organs.
As if losing their daughter from bullying wasn’t enough pain to handle, the parents started getting bullied after the attempted suicide.
The parents received a meme on social media with Rosalie’s face that read “hey mom. Next time don’t tuck me in this,” next to a made bed, Rosalie’s smiling face to the right. Right underneath, the meme reads “Tuck me in THIS,” next to an open grave with Rosalie’s face photoshopped onto a boy’s body, which is pointing at the open grave.
Mom Charlene called the bullies “heartless.”
“For you to do that, I mean, you’re heartless … you have no compassion.”
Father Freddie said he gave his daughter’s journal to the police but that the school hasn’t done enough to prevent tragedies like these.
“I did everything I’m supposed to do as a father, and these people did not respond, because those bullies are still at the school,” Freddie said.
“They’re still there, and my daughter’s gone.”

Bullied 10-year-old girl hangs herself
A 10-year-old Colorado girl died of an apparent suicide — two weeks after she hanged herself when video surfaced on social media of the pre-teen fighting an alleged bully, according to a local report. Ashawnty Davis, an aspiring WNBA player and a fifth-grader at Sunrise Elementary School in Aurora, got into her “first-ever fight” on school property at the end of October, her parents told local news station KDVR.
Another student captured the fight on video and posted it on an app called Musical.ly, her father, Anthony Davis, told the station.
“She was devastated when she found out that it had made it to Musical.ly,” Davis said.
Once the video was posted, Ashawnty was relentlessly bullied until she reached her breaking point, her parents told the station.
“My daughter came home two weeks later and hanged herself in the closet,” said her mother, Latoshia Harris.
She spent another two weeks on life support at Children’s Hospital in Colorado before dying Wednesday morning.
Her parents believe that Ashawty was a victim of “bullycide” — when someone takes his or her life because of bullying, according to the report. They hope her story could help save other young victims’ lives.
“I want other parents to know that it’s happening,” Harris told the station. “That was my baby and I love my baby and I just want mothers to listen.”
In a statement issued to the station, the Cherry Creek School District said that it does not tolerate bullying in its schools, and has a “comprehensive bullying prevention program” in place.
“We were made aware of that video when a media outlet approached us with it,” the statement continued. “We took immediate action in response, turning the video over to police and addressing the matter with students.”
The fight did not take place during school hours, the district said.

Father kills himself on Facebook Live over daughter’s engagement
A distraught father in Turkey, upset that his daughter got engaged without his permission, committed suicide on Facebook Live — as shocked viewers posted reaction emojis and pleaded for him to stop.
The violent scene unfolded as Ayhan Uzun, 54, of Kayseri in central Turkey, was speaking directly into the camera before he suddenly pulled a handgun with his left hand and fired a single shot into his temple. Immediately after the gun goes off, Uzun falls out of the frame and collapses to the floor.
“Goodbye, I am leaving, take good care of yourselves,” Uzun said just before killing himself, according to a translation of the gruesome clip provided by Mirror Online.
Earlier in the video, Uzun, who was home alone at the time, said he was choosing to end his life because his daughter didn’t seek his permission prior to getting engaged.
“I am livestreaming tonight, and it is my will, I do not want the ones who put me in this position to attend my funeral,” Uzun said.
Uzun said he learned about his daughter’s engagement — her “happiest day” — in a telephone call from his wife.
“Nobody asked me,” Uzun said. “Nobody treated me like a man. My father-in-law took my place and without having a right, he approved my daughter’s wedding … Nobody said this girl’s father is alive. Though I would have waited for my daughter and family to say to me: ‘Come, Father, be with us.’”
Uzun said some of the people who viewed his final moments “will call this a show,” but he insisted he didn’t want anyone else to experience the pain he was enduring at the time.
“A little later I will put an end to my life with the gun I am holding in my hands,” he said before ignoring pleas from friends and relatives to not end his life.
Uzun’s family later found his body, which was taken to a morgue for an autopsy, Mirror Online reported.
A spokesperson at Facebook, in a statement to The Post, said the company was “deeply saddened” by the video, which has since been removed from the site.
“We are deeply saddened by the this tragedy,” according to the statement. “We don’t allow the promotion of self-injury or suicide on Facebook. We want people to have a safe experience on Facebook and we work with organizations around the world to provide assistance for people in distress.”

Teacher accused of sleeping with student who tried kill himself indicted on sex charges
A married teacher in Maine accused of sleeping with a student was indicted Tuesday on a number of sexual assault charges.
Jill Lamontagne, 29, turned herself into authorities after she was indicted by a York County Grand Jury on six counts of gross sexual assault, two counts of unlawful sexual contact and six counts of abuse of a minor, the Portland Press Herald reported.
“The indictment was the culmination of an investigation into a relationship Lamontagne allegedly had with a juvenile, male student while she was a teacher at the school,” Kennebunk Deputy Chief of Police Michael Nugent said Wednesday, according to Seacoast Online.
Lamontagne allegedly had a relationship with the male student, 17, who was in her health class at Kennebunk High School at the time of sexual contact.
An abuse order filed by the student’s mother in Biddeford District Court states the relationship between the teacher and boy was revealed when he was hospitalized following a suspected suicide attempt.
The student ingested a concoction of ibuprofen, Tylenol, cold medicine and blood thinner Warfarin, according to the Press Herald.
The boy confessed to the relationship to his aunt a day after his hospitalization. The student and his teacher had sexual contact “numerous times, in the classroom, at her house, in her car,” the student’s mother wrote. The student said Lamontagne performed oral sex on him, adding that “other stuff happened.”
The student allegedly told his mother and a nurse at the hospital that he loved his teacher and took the mixture of medicines to attempt suicide, Seacoast reported.
Lamontagne told the student she hadn’t had a sexual relationship with anyone for two years. Court records reportedly indicate she is married and has children.
The teacher was placed on administrative leave June 12 when the boy’s family notified the school of the sexual contact. Lamontagne then filed for family medical leave, and was still on leave when she submitted her resignation in September.
Lamontagne was booked on the charges and released on $1,000 bail. She’s expected to appear in court Dec. 22.
Brothers lived with mom and partner’s corpses for days after double suicide – believed the couple were “asleep and cold”
Four young brothers in Spain lived with the decomposing bodies of their mother and her partner for nearly a week after the couple killed themselves – not realizing they were dead despite the overpowering stench.
The boys, between the ages of 5 and 13, believed the couple were “asleep and cold,” the Daily Mirror reported.
They dressed and fed themselves, and went to school, while the corpses rotted away after what police say were deliberate drug overdoses.
One of the youngsters finally mentioned to their landlord that their 32-year-old mom had been asleep for days. When he went to check, he was overcome by the smell of death.
On Sept. 20, police found the bodies of Rocio Aguilar and her 40-year-old partner, Jose Antonio, inside the home in La Zarza-Perrunal in southwestern Spain.
It turns out that cops had already stopped by after the boys’ school raised concerns – but they left when the kids assured them that their mother was asleep.
The co-owner of a hostel where the family had stayed before moving to the rental place told the Spanish paper El Mundo that they had arrived “with nothing” only two weeks earlier.
“They were running from something, I do not know what,” said the woman, who only gave her first name, Isabel.
Bella Vazquez, the hostel’s other co-owner, said she knew Aguilar when she was a child and that her family had moved away to Huelva during a mining crisis.
“She was a girl with a very miserable life. It’s a terrible shame,” she said. “There are four children who will hopefully go on and have a good life.

BOY, 8, BULLIED AT SCHOOL DAYS BEFORE KILLING HIMSELF
The 8-year-old hanged himself with a necktie in the bedroom of his Cincinnati home on Jan. 26. School officials called the boy’s mother the day her son was bullied and said he had fainted, attorney Carla Leader told The Associated Press.
“They didn’t tell her the whole story,” Leader said. “The school also said his vitals were fine and he was alert.”
The mother learned of the bullying and the surveillance video after her attorneys obtained a Cincinnati police investigative file over her son’s death. The file included a copy of a Feb. 3 email from a homicide detective to an assistant principal at Carson Elementary School and other Cincinnati school officials describing what he saw on the video obtained from the school district’s security department.
Cincinnati Public Schools, in a statement issued Thursday, did not address the allegation that officials at the elementary school didn’t tell the boy’s mother what had happened. School district spokeswoman Janet Walsh said the detective “mischaracterized the events in the video,” the existence of which was first reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Leader said she watched the surveillance video and that it shows another boy acting aggressively toward students. When the 8-year-old approached him and tried to shake his hand, the boy threw him against the wall, knocking him unconscious, Leader said.
Other students stepped over the boy while others poked him with their feet as he lay unconscious for 7 minutes before an assistant principal and then a school nurse came to his aid, Leader said. The mother came to get the 8-year-old after the school called her.
The mother took him to a hospital that evening after the boy vomited and complained of stomach pains. Doctors said he had a stomach virus and sent him home. Neither doctors nor the boy’s mother knew what had happened earlier that day, her attorneys said.
The ages of the other children involved or present at the attack were not immediately available. The elementary school’s website shows that it serves children from prekindergarten through the sixth grade and has 750 students.
The Cincinnati Public School statement provides a different version of events. It says that “while we are concerned about the length of time that (the boy) lay motionless and the lack of adult supervision at the scene,” school administrators followed protocol by having the nurse evaluate him. The boy’s mother was asked to pick him up and take him to a hospital “to be checked out,” the statement said.
The mother’s attorneys said her sister, who was caring for the boy while she was at work that night, called to tell her the boy had been vomiting.
Leader described the boy as a “happy-go-lucky kid” who had shown no signs of mental issues. Leader said the boy came home from school on Jan. 26, spoke with his mother and went into his bedroom. She later discovered him hanging from his bunk bed.
The email from the homicide detective, which was shared with The Associated Press, describes what he saw in the surveillance video. The detective said it appeared that the “primary agitator” hit one child in the stomach, sending him to the floor on hands and knees. The 8-year-old then approached the aggressor and tried to shake his hand but was pulled to the floor, the detective wrote.
The aggressor “appears to celebrate and rejoice in his behavior as (the boy) lay motionless. For many minutes, many students step over, point, mock, nudge, kick” the boy, the email said.
The detective told school officials that while he had concerns about the bullying, which could be considered a criminal assault, he added that the school would be better suited to handle the situation because of the children’s ages.
Meanwhile, the coroner has reopened its investigation into the boy’s suicide, and his school district is expected to release video showing the incident.
A Hamilton County coroner’s office spokesman said Friday that new evidence has prompted the reopening of the case, but he wouldn’t say what that evidence is.
A Cincinnati schools spokeswoman says the video might be released Friday.
Teen arrested for recording girl hanging herself from tree
A Utah teen was arrested Saturday in connection to the death of a 16-year-old girl found hanging from a tree.
Tyerell Joe Przybycien, 18, was charged with murder after confessing to investigators that he helped the girl kill herself and recorded the incident, the Desert News reported.
He told officers he was “suicidal and wanted to watch the victim die to see if it was something he could go through with himself,” according to an affidavit.
On Saturday morning, the 16-year-old girl was found hanging in Maple Lake, Utah, with a receipt for rope purchased by Pryzbycien nearby.
Authorities also recovered a cellphone and handwritten note identifying the girl at the scene. The note also said “if there were any questions to watch the video” on the phone.
Officers said they charged the phone and watched the video, which showed the girl’s final moments.
“You can clearly see the victim with a noose around her neck while standing on a rock” according to an affidavit. “Przybycien is heard asking the juvenile to say something.”
In the video, the teen girl inhales a large dose of industrial strength air duster, which was later discovered at the scene.
“Przybycien then continues to film this incident on camera for approximately 10 to 11 minutes,” the report said. “Przybycien never offers assistance at anytime, and can be heard asking her to move or say something.”
Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said that the 18-year-old was not captured on video trying to dissuade the girl from taking her life.
“Don’t know if he encouraged her as much as he did not actively discourage her. They talked about it,” Cannon told the Desert News. “He knew what she intended to do. They went together as he purchased the items she intended to use. And he played an active role in her death.”
Przybycien reportedly returned to the scene while officers were still investigating and confessed to his involvement.
He was taken into custody at Utah County Jail, where is being held on $20,000 bail.

Weatherman killed himself after he was reported for sex assault
A meteorologist in Maine who committed suicide last month was named Thursday in a sexual assault investigation — and would be charged if he were still alive, authorities announced.
Tom Johnston, who had been a meteorologist for WCSH since 2014, would face a felony charge of gross sexual assault in connection to a sexual assault that police say occurred on April 1 at a home in Newry and was reported the following morning from a hospital in Bridgton, the Morning Sentinel reported.
Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant told reporters during a press conference Thursday that Johnston, 46, was the only suspect in the assault and was identified by both a witness and the alleged victim, the newspaper reports.
Johnston, whose nickname was “TJ Thunder,” was reported missing April 3 by his girlfriend after he didn’t return home following an event at the Sunday River Ski Resort. Police found his body three days later in a wooded area in Auburn. The state medical examiner determined Johnston died of hypothermia from environmental exposure after cutting himself on both arms and losing consciousness.
Gallant told reporters he believes Johnston knew he was a suspect in the assault, adding that investigators had previously left messages for him were not unable to reach him.
The investigation is now closed since Johnston is dead. He is not believed to have been connected to any other crimes, Gallant said.
Local new reports speculated about Johnston’s involvement in an alleged assault days after his death, but Thursday’s news conference was the first time authorities confirmed that he was a suspect, the Bangor Daily News reports.
