‘Shell on’ challenge is the latest dangerous Snapchat trend among teens
Teens are daring each other to eat plastic packaging, cardboard boxes and fruit peels — and posting videos of themselves doing it to Snapchat — in a bizarre new social media trend called “shell on.”
While not as dangerous as the potentially fatal “Tide Pod challenge” which involved eating laundry detergent pods, doctors still advise against eating anything that isn’t food.
“Organic material like fruit peels are typically not dangerous. Zest is often used in recipes (lemon zest) which is the shavings of the rind,” Chicago-area physician Max Plitt told The Post. “Eating plastic, on the other hand, can be dangerous. BPA has been suggested to influence hormones. Chemicals in PVC like vinyl chloride have been linked to cancers.”
A recent video posted to Snapchat shows Liam Hamm, a sophomore at McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona, biting through a plastic bag filled with carrots.
“Ya’ll eat your lunch with or without the shell,” reads a caption along with the video of Hamm tearing through plastic packaging with his teeth.
Hamm told the Arizona Republic he’s seen scores of other teens posting “shell on” videos on Snapchat, including one in which a teen bites into a lemon and accidentally shoots lemon juice into their eye.
“It just looks funny because it’s not really a shell, but people are calling things shells. I guess that is what’s funny about it,” Hamm said.
Hamm said he didn’t know where the trend originated, but that he’s happy it’s not Tide Pods.
“It’s the Tide Pod challenge minus the fact that it’s not dangerous,” he said.
While the trend appears mostly on Snapchat, several people blasted the teens in the videos on Twitter.
“I wondered why Boomers judged GenZ until I saw a thread about the ‘shell on challenge.’ After 12 videos of high schoolers eating bananas with the peel on… I can finally say I relate to the Boomers,” tweeted Devin Spinks.
“Idk about this ‘shell on challenge’ but I’ve been eating the entire apple, core and all, for years,” wrote KG.

Teacher allegedly groped teen, asked him to ‘send nudes’
A teacher in Georgia was arrested after allegedly groping a 15-year-old student and telling the boy via Snapchat to “send nudes,” authorities said.
Ryan Harvey, a 24-year-old former orchestra teacher at Woodland High School in Stockbridge, was arrested Sunday on several charges, including aggravated child molestation, sexual battery and solicitation of sodomy, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
The alleged victim told deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office that Harvey told him in early September that he was the “only 15-year-old that I would ever f—k with,” according to a sheriff’s incident report.
The alleged advances continued the following month, as the teen told authorities that Harvey would occasionally send him videos of him driving or doing other mundane activities on Snapchat. The teen said Harvey also sent him an image with a heart emoji with a caption that read: “send nudes.”
The teen said Harvey then sent another message saying “that wasn’t for you” before sending yet another that read, “That WAS for you.”
Harvey also asked the boy to stay after school on one occasion to “do the thing” while making a gesture implying oral sex and then sent the teen a photo of himself in November wearing nothing but pink underwear while standing in a bathroom. Later that month, Harvey groped the teen on two occasions, according to the incident report.
Harvey, who was placed on administrative leave after an investigation was launched in November, resigned last month, just weeks before his arrest. He remains in custody without bail at the Henry County Jail and is due to return to court on March 6, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
One parent of a student at the school, meanwhile, said he’s now worried about his son.
“I heard about it this morning and my first instinct was to worry about the welfare of my son,” Darrell Pierce told WXIA. “Because if somebody’s like that around the school and they’re doing what they’re doing with children, then you know, my son could have been involved.”
Harvey, who graduated from the school in 2012, said he was “pretty nervous” to return to his alma mater to teach since he was “not too far removed from my students in age,” he said in 2016.
“Eventually, I want to be a professional orchestra conductor,” Harvey told the Henry Herald. “Having a music education background will definitely help me in the professional conducting world. It’s an out-there idea but one day, I want to conduct for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra or New York Philharmonic.”

FL Nursing home worker posted residents sex videos online
A nursing home employee in Florida was caught secretly recording a pair of seniors having sex — and posting the footage to Snapchat, cops said.
Alexis Williams, 20, is accused of filming an 81-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man doing the deed inside a private room at the Bristol Court Assisted Living Facility in St. Petersburg last August, according to Bay News 9.
The Pinellas County woman was arrested Wednesday after being done in by a tipster, who spotted the video and alerted staff.
The couple apparently had no idea they were being filmed by Williams, who denies everything.
“I asked them, ‘Where’s their proof?’ and I won’t say nothing else until they give me proof,” she told Bay News after being released from custody Wednesday.
But investigators insisted that they had more than enough evidence to charge Williams with video voyeurism — including a confession, surveillance video of her in the act and records provided by Snapchat, itself.
“I think it’s deplorable,” said Helen King with the Area Agency on Aging, a private non-profit agency serving seniors and their caregivers in the area.
“I wouldn’t want it to be someone from my own family at that assisted-living when that happened,” she told CBS Miami. “I hate the fact that she’s already out of jail that quick.”
Bristol Court has since fired Williams and the sheriff’s office has also been reportedly probing whether to shut down the facility, as well.
State records obtained by the outlet show that the nursing home has shelled out more than $6,000 in fines improperly trained staff, workers forgetting to give residents medications and lying on their medical charts.
“You just have to be very, very careful because it’s the life of an older person that you’re placing into here,” King explained. “You want to trust that the people that hire them knew what they were doing and did all the things they should be doing.”
