Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Ignored Orders. He Was Deaf
Police fatally shot a 35-year-old deaf man Tuesday night in Oklahoma City while neighbors screamed at officers that the man couldn’t hear their commands, the New York Daily News reports.
Police say Magdiel Sanchez’s father was behind the wheel of a car that hit an object and didn’t stop. When officers arrived at his home to investigate, they found Sanchez—who had not been in the car with his father—on the porch.
Police say Sanchez was holding a metal pipe (officers originally called it a stick). According to NBC News, a neighbor says Sanchez, who was deaf and used notes to communicate, often carried the pipe to ward off stray dogs during nighttime walks.
Officers told Sanchez to drop the pipe and get on the ground. He couldn’t hear them.
As Sanchez walked toward officers, neighbors screamed that he “can’t hear you.” Capt.
Bo Mathews says it’s possible officers didn’t hear the neighbors. “When you have a weapon out, you can get what they call tunnel vision, or you can lock into just the person who has the weapon, the threat against you,” Mathews says.
Lt. Matthew Lindsey fired a Taser at Sanchez while Sgt. Christopher Barnes fired his gun, KOCO reports. The officers were about 15 feet away from Sanchez at the time.
Mathews says Barnes fired “more than one” shot at Sanchez. According to the Washington Post, it’s unclear why Barnes used his gun instead of a Taser.
Neither officer was wearing a body camera. Barnes has been placed on leave. Sanchez, who died at the scene, had no criminal history.
On his birthday, his 13-year-old sister hugged him. Then he shot her in the head
On Martaevious Santiago’s 17th birthday, he shot his 13-year-old sister in the back of the head.
She had just hugged him in the kitchen of the family’s Florida City home, police said. As they separated and Tedra King walked away, Martaevious pointed a loaded semiautomatic handgun at her. Then he pulled the trigger and killed her.
Martaevious told police it was an accident.
The shooting happened Tuesday night inside a modest Florida City subdivision called Washington Park. Outside the home on Wednesday, shocked family members — some on the way to identify the young girl’s body at the morgue — demanded privacy.
Martaevious, whose life has been marred by gun violence and who was featured as part of a series of stories earlier this year on youth surviving gun violence by Miami Herald news partner WLRN, called police after the shooting and said he had accidentally shot his sister.
Police charged him with aggravated manslaughter of a child and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. The charge does not assume intent, police said.
Martaevious said he got the gun, a semiautomatic handgun, from a 14-year-old friend whom police did not name, but who was also arrested for an unrelated outstanding warrant. It was unclear Wednesday exactly who was in the home just after 8 p.m. when Tedra was shot other than Martaevious and his friend.
His stepfather, Vernon Williams, said he was at home during the shooting and so was Tedra’s mother, Lakesha Bess, who held her daughter after she was shot. Williams told WPLG-Channel 10 that Martaevious said he had made a terrible mistake.
“ ‘I’m sorry, it was an accident,’ ” Williams said Martaevious told him. “ ‘I’m sorry, Dad.’ ”
The WLRN story, which ran in February, explained how a week before last Christmas, Martaevious was in a car in front of his home when gunfire broke out. He was shot in the leg. His friend was shot in the head and survived. Earlier last year, Martaevious’ younger brother Martwan Santiago, 15, was shot four times while playing outside his apartment.
The bullet that hit Martwan’s spine left him paralyzed from the waist down.
“I never knew how he was feeling until I got shot. Now, I feel the pain,” Martaevious told WLRN in February. “Hang around the wrong crowd of people, this is what happens.”
Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez, whose department has dealt with a series of juvenile shooting deaths over the past few years, said he was saddened that another child was lost to gunfire.
“This is what happens when guns get into the hands of youth,” he said.
Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Albert Carvalho, who has been outspoken about the pace of youth violence in South Florida, took to Twitter yet again to voice his outrage.
“Criminally or accidentally, the carnage continues. A 13-year old middle schooler is latest victim of heartbreaking, reckless gun violence,” the superintendent said.
Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace said he visited with the family Tuesday night. He said police believe the gun that ended Tedra’s life was obtained in an earlier burglary. The mayor said he understands people get guns for protection, but at least in Florida City, far too often the weapons only cause unintended tragedy.
“I find this to be far more prevalent than people protecting their castles,” the mayor said.
The shooting rekindled memories of a tragic incident a dozen years ago that took the life of a 3-year-old girl in nearby Homestead nicknamed Shae Shae. The 5-year-old brother of Shae Shae, whose real name was Literica Dyshae Treniece Davis, found a loaded gun in a toy box and fired it at his sister.
She died instantly. After the shooting, Shae Shae’s brother asked his mother: “Can she be fixed?”
With family keeping tight-lipped Tuesday, little information about Tedra was available. The little girl known as Rosie to many family members and friends attended Homestead Middle School, and was part of an extended family of nine brothers and sisters.
A woman who shares Tedra’s last name, Tamera King Cameron, posted a couple of pictures of Tedra on Facebook. In one picture she’s wearing a blue shirt while being hugged from behind.
“RIP Tedra King memories is all we have,” she wrote on the post. In another picture Tedra is seen seated at a restaurant holding a wad of money close to her face.
Florida City neighbor Abbie Young said she heard gunfire Tuesday night, then “running, crying and hollering.” She said Tedra, who lived in the home next door, was always unfailingly polite to her and addressed her formally.
“She was always Miss this, Miss that,” Young said. “She never disrespected me.”
The day she was killed, Tedra and a group of her seventh-grade friends were discussing what they would wear for the middle school prom — still more than a year away. Her 12-year-old friend Josie Joseph said Tedra knew she wanted a purple dress.
Josie, a boy who lives down the street, said he heard the gunshot. The preteen said he has known Tedra since elementary school and they loved rapper Kodak Black and telling jokes.
“Her brother was just playing. He wasn’t supposed to be playing like that,” Josie said. “I was supposed to have class with her today. Now I can’t talk to her anymore.”

Former Equinox Employee Opens Fire in Florida Gym, Killing 2 of His Former Coworkers
A gunman opened fire inside an Equinox fitness club at the Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, Florida, around 1 p.m. on Saturday – leaving two people dead, the luxury gym has confirmed.
Police said the shooter is dead, The Miami Herald reported – and it is believed that he committed suicide after firing his gun.
Equinox member Shed Boren told The Herald the incident involved a disgruntled trainer: “I had just left Equinox,’’ he said. “I heard from my trainer that it was a trainer that had been let go. The general manager and one of the trainers were shot.’’
Equinox confirmed in an email early Sunday morning that the two victims – General Manager Janine Ackerman, 35, and Fitness Manager Marios Hortis, 42 – died from their injuries. They also confirmed that the shooter was a former employee.
“Janine was 35 years old and had been a member of our Equinox family for nearly two years,” several members of Equinox’s executive team said in their statement. “She was promoted to General Manager of our club in Coral Gables last August. She was a kind and caring soul, a person we all loved and will deeply miss. Her memory will never be forgotten.
“Marios Hortis, 42 years old, was with Equinox for more than six years. He was mortally wounded when the shooter entered the club, and died as a result of his injuries. His generous spirit and warm demeanor made him an always welcome presence in our world, one that will be sorely missed.”
There was panic in the gym when shots were fired, a witness told NBC-10.
The upscale mall -which includes stores like Neiman-Marcus, Nordstrom, Jimmy Choo and Crate & Barrel – was placed on lockdown, sending many at its outdoor dining areas scrambling to get under tables, NBC-10 reported.
Security issued a 15-minute audio alert advising “emergency, evacuate or seek shelter,” according to Instagram video posted of the scene.
The Coral Gables Police Department and Miami-Dade Police Department surrounded the mall – securing the crime scene by 1:45 p.m. Those injured were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center via helicopter, NBC-10 reported, which landed at the nearby Coral Gables Senior High School’s sports field.
The mall appears to be one frequented by CNN commentator Ana Navarro, who tweeted about the incident.
“Wow. My local mall,” she wrote. “Hope Miami peeps safe. Reminder, life’s fleeting.”
Equinox CEO Harvey Spevak released a statement to employees Saturday, writing, “On behalf of the Executive Team, I am writing with the sad news that an employee-involved shooting took place at our Coral Gables club earlier today. Two current employees and one former employee were involved in the incident.
“We are not yet releasing the names of the victims, as we cannot confirm that their families have been notified. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is ongoing and we are awaiting further details from the authorities,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by this terrible tragedy. We wanted to alert you, our Equinox family, directly. We are here to answer any and all questions that we can.”

Maryland teen planned a mass shooting and suicide at her school
THURMONT, Md. (AP) — An 18-year-old student meticulously planned a mass shooting at her high school in which she intended to die, authorities in Maryland said Monday.
A shotgun, ammunition and bomb-making materials including nails and fireworks were found at Nichole Cevario’s home in Thurmont on Thursday, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said at a news conference.
There is no evidence that anyone else was involved, Jenkins said.
One of the teen’s parents notified Catoctin High School officials Thursday of a potential threat of violence and Cevario was removed from the classroom and turned over to investigators, the Frederick County sheriff’s office said in a statement. Cevario was later taken from the school to a hospital for an emergency evaluation and remains hospitalized, officials said.
“This attack was prevented by the parents, who stepped forward,” Jenkins said.
Cevario’s journal “clearly spelled out” detailed plans for an attack she had been working on for some time, including a timeline of the attack with her expectations for each stage, officials said. She had set April 5 as the day of the attack, the sheriff said. She was acquiring the materials and compiling details about school emergency procedures associated with drills conducted by school staff and on the school resource deputy.
Cevario’s diary showed “evidence of mental health issues, emotional issues,” Jenkins said. There was no indication that bullying was an issue, but the diary showed “a lot of frustration in her personal life,” Jenkins said.
Investigators don’t believe anyone was working with Cevario and they think they’ve eliminated any threat to the school and community, officials said. While explosive materials were located during the investigation, they weren’t combined in any form that created an explosive device.
Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant charging Cevario with possession of explosive material with intent to create a destructive device and possession of incendiary material with the intent to create a destructive device. They say the warrants will be served when she is released from the hospital.
A man who answered the phone at Cevario’s home and her attorney, Alan Winik, declined to comment.

Missouri Man Accused of Shooting Thief Over iPhone Thought “Stand Your Ground” Protected Him
A Missouri man told police he thought the state’s new “stand your ground” gun law would protect him after allegedly shooting another man Monday, according to KTLA sister station KTVI in St. Louis.
Karl O. Henson, 23, admitted he opened fire while running after a man whose back was turned, he later told officers in a probable cause statement.
Henson, who faces charges of armed criminal action and first-degree assault, told police, “the only reason I thought it was OK to shoot at him while he was running away was because of what happened with the new year with the gun law change,” officer Spirit Stevens wrote.
Missouri instituted the “stand your ground” law in January 2017, after the state legislature guaranteed the passage of Senate Bill 650 in September, despite Governor Jay Nixon’s earlier veto. The law allows people to use deadly force instead of running away, as long as they believe deadly force will be used upon them.
On Monday afternoon, Henson met up with a 20-year-old man who wanted to buy an iPhone 7 from him, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune. While examining the phone, the 20-year-old allegedly took off with the device, running behind a duplex in a cul-de-sac on Riva Ridge Court in northern Columbia.
Henson told police he chased the man into a field, firing six shots and dropping one unspent round as he ran, according to the statement.
The shooting victim was wounded in the heel, and a private vehicle took him to University Hospital, police said.
Henson was arrested at the scene and taken to Boone County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

Suspect Arrested In The Shooting Death Of College Student
It’s sad to hear about people dying when they’re barely getting into the new year. As of Tuesday a suspect was arrested in the shooting death of a college student after an apparent road rage incident.
Eric Jamal Johnson, who was an active U.S. Marine, was taken in to custody in Yuma, Arizona after a warrant was put out for his arrest for shooting 20 year old Sarah Mutschlechner, a junior at the University of North Texas. Mutschlechner was driving home from a New Years Eve party at around 2:00 a.m. with her sorority sisters when a black SUV pulled up beside them.
The SUV was carrying abut five or six men and words were exchanged between the two vehicles. Someone in the SUV then fired at the car and Mutschlechner was struck before crashing her car. She remained on life support for most of the day Friday before she died, her friends also suffered minor injuries.
Barely into the new year and people are killing one another. Seriously what makes someone so mad to the point where he felt the need to pull out a gun and shoot at someone who just celebrated the new year? Him and rest of his homeboys need to be thrown under the jail for this.

Terrika Wilkinson, Jadarrious’ mother said, “I guess my baby hit him too hard or whatever and he got mad about it but he was up in there playing with a gun in a house full of kids.” Officers received reports of the shooting at the home on McComb Street around 10:44 PM, Wednesday, where they found Jadarrious unresponsive. Emergency crews were unable to revive him, and he was later pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Darren Wilson profile in ‘New Yorker’ riles activists
ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – With the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s shooting death this Sunday, New Yorker magazine published a profile Monday morning of the former police officer who shot and killed the Ferguson teenager. That story, which delves into Darren Wilson’s upbringing and the moments leading up to his fateful encounter with the 18-year-old Brown, as well as Wilson’s current life in hiding, has drawn the ire of activists online. Writer Jake Halpern’s 10,000-word profile piece on Wilson, entitled ‘The Man Who Shot Michael Brown,’ is based on a series of interviews with the 29-year-old former police officer and his wife, conducted since March 2015. Wilson, who has since moved to “the outskirts of St. Louis,” said he began receiving death threats shortly after shooting Brown. An U.S. Justice Department-led investigation into the events of the shooting concluded Wilson did not willfully violate Brown’s civil rights and cleared him of wrongdoing. However, a second report by the DoJ blasted practices by the city and its police force regarding arrests and fines levied against black citizens in overwhelmingly high numbers. Shortly after the profile piece was published, civil rights activist DeRay McKesson took to Twitter to accuse The New Yorker of “humanizing” Wilson, adding “watch whiteness work” in a subsequent tweet.
