Pharrell says ‘Blurred Lines’ scandal changed his idea about sexism: ‘We live in a chauvinist culture’
Pharrell Williams is adjusting with the times and taking a step back to discuss one of his biggest pop hits.
The artist-producer and fashion mogul talked to GQ for its New Masculinity issue (released Monday) about his 2013 single, “Blurred Lines,” which he recorded with Robin Thicke and T.I. Back then, there was a controversy surrounding the record’s lyrics, which critics said degraded women, and the tune’s video, in which one of social media’s most openly sexual influencers, Emily Ratajkowski and other women frolicked in skimpy garb.
Ratajkowski called her appearannce in the music video “the bane of my existence.”
Speaking to the men’s fashion magazine, Pharrell said the Billboard award-winning record has aged terribly. He noted that much of the theme surrounding the song wouldn’t be acceptable in today’s #MeToo climate.
“I was also born in a different era, where the rules of the matrix at that time allowed a lot of things that would never fly today,” said Pharrell, 46, of his career then and now. “Advertisements that objectify women. Song content. Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place.”
The 13-time Grammy Award-winner said it took the backlash from his infamous Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus-performed record to flip his perspective on what the song meant to people within the larger society, not just within his fan base.
“I didn’t get it at first. Because there were older white women who, when that song came on, they would behave in some of the most surprising ways ever. And I would be like, ‘wow.’ They would have me blushing,” the “Happy” singer said.
“So when there started to be an issue with it, lyrically, I was, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ There are women who really like the song and connect to the energy that just gets you up. And ‘I know you want it’ — women sing those kinds of lyrics all the time. So it’s like, ‘What’s rapey about that?’”
The Virginia Beach, Va., native said: “And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women,”
“And I was like, ‘Got it. I get it.’ Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel. Even though it wasn’t the majority, it didn’t matter.”
He continued: “I cared what they were feeling, too. I realized that we live in a chauvinist culture in our country.
“Hadn’t realized that. Didn’t realize that some of my songs catered to that. So that blew my mind.”

Robin Thicke and girlfriend lose home to California fires
Robin Thicke and girlfriend April Love Geary have lost their Malibu home as a result of the California wildfires. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Geary, 23, posted a photo of what remains to be their front gate.
“Our house is gone,” the model shared to her story.

“Family is safe! Praying for everyone out here!” Thicke shared on social media.
“I’m so sad but so thankful that we all made it out safe,” Geary penned. “Praying for everyone in Malibu, our city is up in flames ?.”
Geary and Thicke are among a number of celebrities who have been affected by the wildfires, including Kim Kardashian, Martin Sheen and Caitlyn Jenner. As of Saturday, the death toll had risen to 25.

Asian E-Commerce Sites Are Ripping Off Popular Black Jewelry Designer Rachel Stewart
It seems no one is original anymore people wanna make other people’s gifts their OWN hustle. Folks don’t want to learn the craft of artistry that they see I’m talking about music we hear, that jewelry we admire, a drawing we see in a magazine,on a Facebook page, online, TV; movies I can go on. As I’ve learned in the past few weeks from an article I read; talking with two of my friends (who I know in real life) their gift was used as a hustle.
For those of us ladies and men who love wearing jewelry while carrying our (Man Bag lol ) handbag; accessories often admire; dream of making custom-made jewelry accessory, handbags; build a clothing line but they don’t wanna do the work they just want that quick hustle, my home girl whom I know (in real life) who custom makes all her jewelry she spends hours, days and sometimes she falls asleep while creating her DOPE ass work she’s told me most of creations comes from her dreams. (As most creative people’s creations do) While listening to her speak you could hear her enthusiasm her love of what she’s doing she enjoys making her creations She says folks try to just get a hustle and copy her work instead of learning the craft of jewelry making. Other so called jewelry designers ( jewelry hustler designers) have approached her at other venues inspecting her work and asking a lot of questions TRYING to figure out her greatness while wanting to collaborate and even saying her prices are to high while telling her what THEY would do to make more money by selling her jewelry cheaper well my girl ain’t no fool she says no thank you ma’am I don’t want your business.
It’s a shame because our OWN Black folk (WHITE FOLK DO IT TOO) are TRYIN’ to con and out do our own they don’t want to put in the work cause THEY LAZY and wanna make a quick buck. They want to make the same product with low-end materials so they can sell it at a cheaper price. This is happening overseas as well.
In order to have high Quality jewelry my friend finds real stones and other things that make it special and unique She has to find another avenue to to expand her business without being ripped off. Sadly her experience mirrors that of Rachel Stewart a custom jewelry designer.
As we know earlier this year Pharell Williams and Robin Thicke were sued for copyright infringement from the Marvin Gaye family and the Gaye family won it makes me wonder is Pharell Williams even original at all, has he been stealing other people’s music guitar riffs etc; has he been taking credit for work he did not produce or write since he came out in 1992?
Another friend I know (in real life) is a very talented musician, pianist; song writer he’s played me a sample of his gift and his style is very unique. One evening I asked him have you ever written a song and send it out to a producer and he said “Well you probably won’t believe me because nobody else does but yes I have” He explained that he ( when he was 14 years old) sent off a song he composed to a well known record company at the time (that is no longer in existence) and a few months later he heard his song on the radio his song was being performed by a very famous and well-known artist. My mouth fell to the floor I asked him “Do you have a copy of your sheet music?” He said nope you know I almost cried for him. He was telling me he tried to get his mama to help him get his money for his song but I guess she didn’t see the urgency in his please for help.
TRUE artists DON’T get the props anymore if you looked at the Grammy’s this spring Beck won for best album of the year simply because of the heard work we put into making his masterpiece he composed his OWN music played REAL instruments I know he probably spent hours and days working on his album to get it just right. He deserved that Grammy but do you think his colleagues would be happy for him? NOPE! Because these sukkahs want to hustle someone else’s gift and call it their OWN Beck is a TRUE ARTIST!
Remember if you have a gift or you want to develop a gift cherish it take your time with your gift which I know you will because you have a passion for your gift. DO YOUR HOMEWORK study know who you are doing business with.learn your rights within your choosen industry Lastly, for you consumers out there I’d spend much money for what true artists give you TRUST ME YOU’LL GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH! My Girl Friend said it best “Your Gift Is NOT a hustle”! If you’d like to buy some DOPE custom made. jewelry click the link below Rachel Stewart and my Girl Cj would love for you to rock their gift of humble style!
