R. Kelly: Singer pleads not guilty to updated sex abuse charges
R&B singer R. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to 13 sexual abuse charges in Chicago, including allegations involving a new accuser.
The new alleged victim, referred to as Minor Six, was included as part of an updated federal indictment.
Prosecutors also said they had seized more than 100 electronic devices, such as smartphones, iPads and hard drives, after executing a search warrant.
The judge set a trial date for 13 October, six months later than planned.
The Chicago case includes several counts accusing Kelly of child pornography. The chart-topping US singer, whose full name is Robert Kelly, has consistently denied the allegations.
The updated indictment is largely the same as the original – which also had 13 counts – but now includes a reference to Minor Six.
Prosecutors offered little detail about the new alleged victim, but said the person met Kelly in the late 1990s at the age of 14 or 15.
The indictment said Kelly “engaged in sexual contact and sexual acts” with Minor Six and four others when they were aged under 18.
The R&B singer is facing several state and federal charges of sexual abuse in the US.
Kelly was arrested in Chicago in July on two sets of charges including sex trafficking, child abuse images and obstruction of justice.
He has already pleaded not guilty to more than 20 sexual offences across several US states, including prostitution charges in Minnesota.
The allegations were brought back into the spotlight following the documentary series, Surviving R. Kelly, which aired in the US at the start of 2019.
It detailed stories about him pursuing teenage girls going back to the start of his career.

R. Kelly: Emergency Hernia Surgery … Can’t Make It to Court
Article via TMZ
R. Kelly missed a court date this week, but had a pretty good excuse — going under the knife … in an operating room, not his jail cell.
Sources close to Kelly tell TMZ … the singer was briefly taken outta MCC Chicago, and transported to a hospital earlier this week where doctors performed emergency surgery to repair a hernia. We’re told he was transported back to the big house after the procedure.
We don’t know how long of a hospital stay he had, but he was back in his jail cell by Thursday evening. We’re told he wasn’t allowed to have any visitors at the hospital.
Seems the hernia’s been plaguing Kelly for a while. His lawyer filed docs back in September, outlining several medical issues facing Kelly … including anxiety, numbness in one of his hands and the then-untreated hernia.
The Chicago Sun-Timesreports Kelly is getting pain meds now, and aside from missing the court date this week — he’s also MIA from jailhouse basketball games while he’s recovering.

R. Kelly’s Ex-Wife Will Sue Lifetime Over Misleading ‘Surviving Part 2’ Promo
Update 12:56 PM PT — Drea hopped on “TMZ Live” and it’s pretty clear why she’s livid with Lifetime. Drea says her main beef with Lifetime is the lack of support for the women after the documentary was released. She straight-up says she’s gonna sue Lifetime for including her in the ‘Surviving Part II’ trailer when she vehemently said she would NOT take part in the doc.
R. Kelly‘s ex-wife is out to make it known she has nothing to do with the second installment of the ‘Surviving’ docuseries … and has a list of reasons why she declined to participate.
Drea Kelly says the new official trailer for “Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning” is misleading to audiences … because it makes it looks like she was involved.
That’s because the trailer shows a clip of Drea from the original ‘Surviving’ docuseries that aired in early 2019 — in which she had a substantial role — and she’s not happy about it.
Drea says she’s been adamant about refusing to be part of the follow-up, but despite her requests to not be linked to it … Lifetime did it anyway.
She says she got a lot of negative backlash from the public after the series aired, but on top of that, she has many grievances with the network and production company. She says her requests to not contact her kids and family members about ‘Part II’ were ignored, and there has been a general lack of support, security and aftercare for survivors who participated.
Drea says she wants to reiterate — “she has no involvement, did not approve any footage or stills of her likeness and is not actively promoting, nor consulting the follow-up series.”
It’s interesting because another notable person is featured in the new trailer — Kelly accuser, Lisa Van Allen. However, she also told us herself she has nothing to do with ‘Surviving Part II’ because she’s not pleased with how Lifetime has been handling the subject matter.

Gucci Mane was R Kelly’s ghost writer, rapper reveals
According to a new interview with OJ da Juiceman, “If you listen deep into it R Kelly singing and sh*t”.
2019 has seen R Kelly arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in Chicago, face further claims of abuse from his ex-wife and seen his ex-girlfriend Jocelyn Savage claim he made her have two abortions.
Now the R&B singer’s name has been brought up in a ghost-writing claim from rapper OJ da Juiceman, who claims fellow rapper Gucci Mane penned lyrics for R Kelly.
In an interview with CountryRapTunes, OJ da Juiceman claimed that his 2009 R Kelly collab ‘Supaman High’ actuall featured secret vocals from Gucci Mane and R Kelly’s lyrics were written by the rapper.
OJ da Juiceman explained, “Gucci wrote the hook…no, I wrote the hook. Gucci wrote R Kelly’s verse. And R Kelly kept Gucci’s ad-libs. If you listen deep into it R Kelly singing and sh*t, you’ll hear Gucci.”
He went on to say, “The label [said] R Kelly got this record. He need a hook and a verse. The label put the call in. ‘R Kelly? Hell yeah!’ I was happy as hell to do that sh*t. Me to be a trap rapper rapping ’bout dope and sh*t? R Kelly? Got-damn, c’mon man.”
Gucci Mane has yet to respond to the claims at the time of writing.
R Kelly is currently in jail in Chicago awaiting trial, although no trial date has yet been set in the singer’s sex trafficking case.

R. Kelly’s GF Joycelyn Savage Patreon Acct. Was Impostor … I’m NO Traitor!!!
R. Kelly‘s girlfriend is officially breaking her silence with a video that refutes the abuse claims attributed to her on a Patreon account … claims she calls total BS.
Joycelyn Savage says she wants to clear her name following reports she’d turned on Kelly by posting dirty deets about their relationship on the paysite, Patreon. She says she had nothing to do with the site, and STILL has no plans to assassinate Kelly’s character.
But, in this video we obtained … Joycelyn starts out reading a prepared statement, or, as Kelly’s critics might call it … a script.
As for the claims of abuse, purportedly made in her name on Patreon, she says they were all flat-out false — and she blames an impostor for launching that page, as well as an Instagram account bearing her name.
Joycelyn also reveals the current status of her relationship with Kelly, saying they communicate daily.
It should be noted … lots of people had cast doubt as to the veracity of the Patreon account, including R. Kelly accuser Lisa Van Allen, who explained her rationale to us on “TMZ Live.”
Joycelyn did go off script later in her video statement … adding both she and Azriel Clary are still firmly in Kelly’s corner, although Azriel never appears on camera.
As we reported, Patreon shut down the alleged Joycelyn account after it couldn’t authenticate the owner’s identity.
R. Kelly, meanwhile, is still behind bars … and dealing with multiple federal and state sexual abuse cases, but Joycelyn says she still sees him regularly.

R. Kelly’s daughter says she doesn’t have a relationship with him
“People (want) to work with me to spite him or people (don’t want) to work with me just because of who he is,” Buku Abi said of pursuing her own music career.
NEW YORK — For a long time, Buku Abi ran away from pursuing music.
Although she is the daughter of one of pop music’s most popular and successful singer-songwriters, her father is also among the most infamous: He is R. Kelly, currently in jail, facing multiple charges of sexual abuse and sex trafficking.
“I think you get to see a different side of it than somebody who sees it from the outside and gets to see the glitz and glam. I got to see the hell part of it,” said 21-year-old Abi, born Joann Kelly, in a recent interview with The Associated Press. “I didn’t want to be in the industry.”
Even before she was born, her father was under scrutiny for his interactions with young women: He had secretly married his then-protege, Aaliyah, when the late R&B sensation was just 15 in 1994. But by the time Abi was a child, while Kelly was still a multiplatinum star raking up hit after hit, he was also on trial, accused of child pornography (he would eventually be acquitted in 2008).
Abi said going to public school for the first time as an early teen was challenging — there she heard stories about her father that she had not heard before.
“At home it’s normal, you’re living a life with your parents; your dad and mom aren’t going to go into all the bad things that might be going on outside of home,” she said, “but kids in school don’t necessarily care. Fifth and sixth grade is when I started learning the sore part of it, the not so good part. I think that was the hardest part for me because for so long I went with this image of who my dad (was) and what my family (was).”
Things were so bad in school, she even contemplated suicide. But though school is where her life almost ended, it’s also where she felt it truly began: She recalls singing onstage in high school during a performance, which she said “literally felt like drugs.”
“I needed more of this,” she added. “Clearly I can’t keep running from this anymore. Ever since then, I’ve been in it and it’s literally saved my life.”
Entering the music business comes with a different challenge for Abi: She can’t escape the fact that R. Kelly is her father. She is no longer in touch with him and says being his daughter is like “a double-edged sword.”
“I definitely run across challenges — people wanting to work with me to spite him or people not wanting to work with me just because of who he is,” she said. “I’ve definitely come across turmoil … being judged for really no reason at all, just based off associations. I’ve been pushing through it. Me making the art, it saved my life so there’s nothing really that would be able to stop me.”
Abi decided not to use the name her parents gave her in her career. She settled on the stage name Buku Abi about three years ago after first going by the name Ariirayé. In the last five years she’s been hard at work on her debut EP, “Don’t Call Me,” released this March. Her sister Jaah Kelly produced the album, which echoes SZA and other millennial artists in the alternative R&B world.
When it comes to making music, she doesn’t deny that’s where she and her father connect: “There’s a lot about him as an artist that inspires me.”
“He has made mistakes in his life and other things that he’s dealing with, but when it comes to that, I can’t take that away from him,” she said. “That’s the one thing that will always keep us connected.”
Abi once thought she and her father would mend things. Under her former stage name Ariirayé, she collaborated with him on the song “Wanna Be There,” a plea to restore their broken relationship. It appears on his 2015 album, “The Buffet.”
“When you conquer the world I just wanna be there/But no matter how successful baby girl/When you need someone to lean on I just wanna be your shoulder,” R. Kelly sings to Abi on the song.
“At that time I was in a place where I was genuinely trying to have a relationship with my father,” she said. “But it was so complicated at that time, as it always is. It was a great experience, I’m glad that I did it, but it just wasn’t like what everybody assumed, and that’s the part that sucks. It wasn’t this big kumbaya moment.”
R. Kelly is currently in a Chicago jail. He pleaded not guilty in federal court to charges that he sexually abused women and girls who attended his concerts there. He has been accused of using his fame to recruit young women and girls into illegal sexual activity, and has also been charged in Chicago and Minnesota for separate incidents. While he had been dogged by allegations that he abused women for years (a charge he denies), scrutiny from January’s highly rated Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly,” which detailed multiple allegations against him, led to new investigations and new charges (among his legal troubles is also a backlog in child support for his children, including Abi).
Abi said she tries not to pay attention to the daily updates about her father: “I don’t let that be a part of my every day (life).”
“(We) don’t have a relationship, so it’s not like me to check in on him,” she said. “I don’t personally go look it all up and read. I keep myself out of it.”
Abi currently lives in Atlanta and appeared on the WEtv reality series “Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta” alongside her mother and R. Kelly’s ex-wife, choreographer Drea Kelly.
“Just watching my baby grow into this young woman and be unapologetic about who she is and what she stands for and what she believes, really just being her own artist and owning her artistry and not coming out trying to be or ride the tail of being R. Kelly’s daughter — she’s really going at this alone and that’s what brings her pride,” Drea Kelly said. “I’m elated.”
But Drea Kelly, who was featured in “Surviving R. Kelly” and has accused her former husband of domestic abuse, has also been disheartened by what she sees as the public blaming Abi for Kelly’s alleged misdeeds.
“If your mom has an addiction, should everybody judge you off your mom’s addiction? … Everyone would say no, but then why is it OK for people to do it to my children simply because of who he is?” said Kelly, who has three children with the singer. “I’ve taught Buku, I’ve taught all my children … you don’t wait for the world to give you a shot, you go out there and take your shot.”
Abi says the foul words she heard in school that almost caused her to end her life has prepared her for what’s to come: “Growing up has given me an armor, almost.”
“I just want people to know that, at the end of the day, the stereotypes that you may have for other people, whether it be about race, sexuality, their financial status, don’t judge a book by its cover because nine times out of 10 you’re completely wrong,” she said. “I want to be an example of that.”

R. Kelly’s Daughter Jaah Kelly Fell Into A Dark Depression After Coming Out As Transgender At 14
Jaah Kelly, who now identifies as a lesbian at 18 years old, added that she was “scared.”
When Jaah Kelly, the daughter of disgraced singer R. Kelly and Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta star Drea Kelly, came out as a transgender male at age 14, it was traumatic.
Jaah, who now identifies as a lesbian at age 18, told Paper magazine in a recent lengthy interview that her stepping into her truth resulted in her falling into a deep depression, followed by a three-week psychiatric hospital stay.
“When I posted that video, I was so scared,” Jaah told the magazine. “When I was younger, I always felt like I had to make a choice. I knew that I was a girl who liked other girls. But because of what I was taught, I felt like the only way you could like another girl is if you were a boy.”
Four years later, Jaah explained in the magazine’s Pride issue why she now identifies as a lesbian along with nonbinary and gender fluid.
“I identify as a lesbian. I know I like girls, but that’s as far as I’ll go to label myself,” she detailed. “It’s up to you how you see me. Either way, I don’t care. I stand in my truth, and why does my truth need a label?”
Although she refused to talk about her father R. Kelly’s recent headlines, her mother Drea did reveal the musical similarities between the two. In high school, Jaah took to music, playing the trumpet, clarinet and eventually teaching herself how to play piano.
“One thing she gets from her father, true in her DNA, is her ability to create and produce by ear. She’s entirely self-taught,” Drea said about Jaah. “When she wanted to learn piano, she just came to me one day and told me she taught herself how on YouTube. The same goes for making beats. To have my JaahBaby doing what she does in a male-dominated industry makes her all the more extraordinary in my eyes.”
Jaah, who writes, produces, raps and sings her own music, said she creates music to inspire people to live full in their truths.
“I’d want people to know that you can do whatever you feel you want to because you have one life,” she added. “The reason I dress the way I dress is because I want to. The reason I do anything at all is because I want to. It just makes me happy. I feel like there are so many people who don’t do what they want to do in life.”
“Maybe people who feel like that can listen to my music and feel like they can do whatever the hell they want. Music doesn’t have one sound, one identity, and neither do people. Just let go of everything,” Jaah encouraged.

‘Surviving R. Kelly’ follow up coming to Lifetime with Soledad O’Brien
Article via USAToday
“Surviving R. Kelly” is getting a highly-anticipated follow-up.
“Surviving R Kelly: The Impact,” a two-hour follow-up special to the explosive “Surviving R. Kelly” series that debuted in January, premieres on the network on May 4th at 10 p.m. E.T.
The special, hosted by Soledad O’Brien, will recap the reactions to the initial explosive documentary, which premiered shortly before Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in February.
The special intends to “elevate the conversation on sexual violence and what it means to be a survivor,” per a press release.
Most recently, lawyers of Kelly’s were in court in April to argue over pretrial motions, including Kelly’s demand that prosecutors turn over copies of communications from Michael Avenatti, the attorney who claims to have found an old video showing Kelly having sex with one of his then-teen accusers.
