Nail salon workers butcher deer meat right in front of customers
They were cutting more than nails at this establishment.
A woman enjoying a manicure at a North Carolina nail salon witnessed an unusual sight — workers chopping up deer meat in plain sight.
Morgan Taylor posted about her bizarre experience on Facebook last Thursday, including a photo of a salon worker at Diamond Nails in High Point, N.C. kneeling down on the floor while cutting hunks of meat.
“Hunting for a new nail salon in High Point, North Carolina? Talk about multitaskers … manicures, pedicures, and amateur deer butchers. Oh deer!” Taylor wrote, along with hashtag “notfawned” and “ohbuckno.”
Taylor told WXII-TV that she was at the salon last Wednesday getting her nails done for her sister’s Saturday wedding when the butchering occurred.
“I was sitting there getting my nails done, and looked over and they were pulling out deer meat from a cooler,” Taylor told the outlet.
“I get scared that I’m going to see trash on the ground or weird smells, but not to see a dead deer.”
Taylor said the workers placed the meat atop a tarp on the ground and sliced it without gloves. Others in the salon, including customers, seemed unfazed by the sight, she said.
“All the workers there were really nice to me and they did a good job, but I don’t think they thought that anyone would care,” said Taylor.
“And they didn’t think it was wrong to cut it in front of clients in the nail salon, which is surprising.”
The incident was reported by Taylor to the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Arts. They are investigating whether the nail salon violated any codes, the report said.
The owners of the salon had no comment on the occurrence, a woman inside the salon told WXII-TV.

Woman who used racial slur in confrontation with black diners says she’d do it again
A white North Carolina woman was caught in a now-viral video using the N-word while confronting a group of black women at a restaurant — and then doubled down on her serving of hate, saying she’d use the slur again, according to a report.
A 66-second clip posted to Facebook on Tuesday by Chanda Stewart, who is black, shows a woman identified as Nancy Goodman speaking to an employee at Bonefish Grill in Raleigh, complaining that the three nearby women were being disruptive and too loud.
“So am I shocked because this person had the audacity right here to come to our table and tell us that we are the rudest people that she has ever met,” Stewart says, alluding to the smiling white woman. “Look at her … We’re paying for our food just like everybody else and she told us that we are the rudest people ever.”
Goodman then pulls out her phone and walks around her table to confront the women, video shows, telling them that she has “really good” friends who are black.
“And I love them,” Goodman says.
“We never said anything about color,” Stewart replies.
Goodman then tells the group she thought they were being “too loud,” prompting another woman at Stewart’s table to say that their money was “just as green” as hers.
“Oh, you’re so stupid, n—-r,” Goodman replies before walking away from the women’s table, video shows.
Goodman later told WRAL that she wasn’t sorry for using the slur, saying she would “say it again” to the group of women.
“I’m not going to say I’m sorry to them because they kept pushing at it,” Goodman told the station. “I would say it again to them. They are the rudest individuals I have ever seen.”
Goodman, who insisted she wasn’t racist, apologized to her family, friends and other customers at the restaurant in a since-deleted post on her Facebook page, saying she had “extreme anxiety” but admitted that did not excuse her behavior.
“I am ashamed of my actions,” she wrote in the post.
A spokeswoman for the restaurant’s parent company, meanwhile, told WRAL that the incident was being reviewed so such confrontations can be de-escalated in the future.
“We do not tolerate hate speech or disrespect in our restaurants,” a spokeswoman for Bloomin’ Brands told the station.

Man tried to kill wife with ant poison
A North Carolina man has been arrested and charged after police say he tried to kill his wife with ant poison.
Authorities said Eugene Richard Pittman, 52, of Hope Mills, N.C., has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.
According to the arrest warrant, Eugene’s wife noticed a funny taste in her meal. The woman said she woke up later to find that her hands and mouth were duct taped, and Eugene was holding her nose shut.
She said Eugene told her she had two choices: that she could leave or she could die.
Police said Pittman willfully “attempted to murder his wife by poisoning her food with Terro ant poison.”

Father-daughter couple arrested for incest after having love child
A 42-year-old North Carolina man and his 20-year-old daughter have been arrested on incest charges after having a love child last year–and reportedly getting married.
Steven Pladl, 42, of Knightdale, and Katie Pladl, 20, were arrested Jan. 27, WNCN-TV reported, citing “warrants.” They have also been charged with adultery and contributing to delinquency. The maximum sentence for the incest charge is 10 years in prison.
The child, a boy, was born in September, the station reported.
Steven Pladl was released on a $1 million bond. Katie Pladl’s bond is also $1 million but as of last week she was still being held in a North Carolina jail. They appeared in court last week.
The charges were brought in Virginia where authorities believe the relationship began.
The station reported that Pladl gave up Katie for adoption when she was an infant.
They reunited in 2016 when she tracked him down through social media.
At the time, according to the station, Pladl was living outside Richmond with his wife, Katie’s mother, and their two children, girls who would have been Katie’s sisters.
Katie moved into the home, the station reported.
Subsequently, Pladl and his wife legally separated in November 2016 and began living apart.
She told authorities that just before she moved out he would sleep on the floor in Katie’s room, the station reported.
Online records show the wife filed for divorce in March 2017 and obtained a divorce decree three months later.
The ex-wife learned Katie was pregnant last May, the station reported.
Eight days later child welfare workers in Virginia began conducting interviews, according to the station. They interviewed the two older children who said they had been told their father fathered Katie’s baby.
The warrants show that Steven Pladl told his other children to call Katie their step-mom, the station reported.
Police in suburban Richmond issued arrest warrants for Steven Pladl and Katie last November.
The ex-wife told Richmond’s WTVR-TV that her former husband and Katie married in Maryland and then moved to North Carolina.
She believes her ex-husband brainwashed and manipulated Katie, the station reported.
“This is a pretty unique set of facts I would say,” the station’s legal analyst Todd Stone said.

Mom accused of leaving 10-year-old son out in the cold for hours while she attended Christmas dinner
A North Carolina mother was accused of locking her young son out of their home on Christmas day while she attended a dinner with her other children.
Susan Dowless, 43, was arrested on Wednesday after police said she intentionally left her 10-year-old son outside their Cary home for about five hours.
Authorities said Dowless took her other three sons out to a Christmas dinner, the News & Observer reports.
The police were called after a neighbor saw the child wandering around alone.
Investigators said temperatures on Christmas were below 40 degrees and the child did not have adequate clothing or proper nourishment or supervision.
The child is said to be healthy and in the care of a relative. Dowless’ oldest son, 21-year-old Gilmore Smith, told WRAL that the incident was a big misunderstanding and his mother did not intentionally lock the 10-year-old out in the cold. According to Smith, the child had been at a friend’s house and was told to come home by a certain time.
When the boy failed to return on time, Dowless assumed the child was staying over at the friend’s house.
“We waited for him for a good hour and then we went on,” Smith said. “We weren’t trying to abandon him or anything.”
“We thought he was going to be with his friends, like he normally was. Every time he comes home from school, he goes to his friend’s house. He plays until it’s dark, then he comes home.”
Dowless was charged with one count of misdemeanor child abuse. She was released from jail on Wednesday after posting her $5,000 bond. Dowless has been ordered to have no contact with her son as the investigation continues.

Boy charged with stabbing sister to death after showing up at neighbor’s ‘with blood all over’
A North Carolina boy was charged in his older sister’s brutal murder after he allegedly showed up covered in blood at a neighbor’s home.
The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect knocked on a neighbor’s door Saturday night in Weaverville, saying that someone killed his sister, news station WHNS reported.
The neighbor called 911 and told dispatchers the boy claimed he was trying to escape the person who killed his sibling, according to news station WLOS.
“He’s got blood all over him,” the man reportedly told 911. “He’s on my front porch.”
Deputies responded to find 18-year-old Kayla Desiree Hensley’s body at the bottom of the family’s street.
The teen suffered severe knife lacerations in the attack, according the incident report.
Authorities are treating the case as a homicide.
The younger brother, who spoke to investigators at the scene, was taken into custody of the state Department of Public Safety Juvenile Justice. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity because he is a minor.
He has since been charged with first-degree murder, officials said.
The victim’s mom, Susan Maltry, broke her silence Tuesday on her daughter’s death. She said that her daughter, who was hearing impaired, had “overcome many downfalls.”
“She was the best thing that ever happen to me and will be missed by so many.” Maltry told WLOS. “She is and will always be my hero.
A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for her memorial services.
Pastor dug up 5-year-old’s gravestone after payment dispute
A North Carolina couple is experiencing a second heartbreak after their 5-year-old son’s grave marker was repossessed by the manufacturer over payment dispute.
The boy, Jake Leatherman, died nearly a year ago after a battle with leukemia. His funeral became national news when NASCAR racers Joey Logano, Matt DiBenedetto, Ryan Ellis J.J. Yeley and crew members from the teams of Kyle Busch, Aric Almirola, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. attended.
But when Jake’s mother, Crystal, recently went to visit her sons grave, the stone was gone, she told WBTV on Monday.
“He repossessed it, like it was a car,” she said. The manufacturer of the monument, the Rev. J.C. Shoaf, said the family did pay in full for a stone, but made several changes, which added up to a larger bill. “If you buy something, you’ve got to pay for it. No matter what it is,” Shoaf, who runs Southeastern Monument company, told WBTV.
Southeastern Monument company, told WBTV.
When he was asked why he placed the marker originally without a full payment, Shoaf said he did it out of good will.
“Because they had been through so much emotionally, grieving so hard, I thought we’d just go ahead and do it,” he said.
Crystal Leatherman and her husband, Wayne, told WBTV they didn’t know about the additional costs, but if they did they would have paid.
“If I would have owed him the money I would have paid him,” Crystal Leatherman told WBTV. “This is not something you argue over.”
Shoaf said the dispute about Jake’s gravestone marked the first time in 54 year he’s had this problem — but he also said he feels for the family
“They’ve been through an awful lot, I know that. And right now, they’re thinking emotionally, and having that grave out there unmarked – that’s emotional trauma. I lost a child, I know what that is,” Shoaf said.
The couple is now looking at using another company to help provide a grave marker — and are looking into hiring an attorney.

Husband thinks he killed wife in his sleep
A North Carolina man is using the bad dream defense — telling a 911 operator he awoke from slumber to find his wife stabbed to death and drenched in blood, reports said.
Matthew Phelps, 28, told the operator in Raleigh early Friday that he fell asleep after taking too much cold medicine and may have accidentally killed his wife in his sleep, ABC 13 reported.
“I think I killed my…,” Phelps said to the operator, according to the outlet.
“What do you mean by that? What happened?” the dispatcher asked.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor … I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed. I think I did it. I can’t believe this,” Phelps told the dispatcher.
Raleigh police charged Phelps with murder on Friday shortly after he made the emergency call. His wife, Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps, 29, was found dead from multiple stab wounds.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor,” Phelps can be heard saying on the call.
“How? How?” the dispatcher asked.
At the end of the call, which lasted 7 minutes, Phelps sobbed to the operator and said his wife didn’t deserve what happened.
“She’s not moving at all. Oh my God. She didn’t deserve this,” Phelps said.
He told dispatchers he took the cough medicine Coricidin because he has trouble sleeping.
The makers of the drug told ABC there’s no evidence to suggest it’s associated with violent behavior.
Police don’t believe the crime was a random act and Phelps is being held without bond. He’s due back in court Tuesday.

Students arrested for catfishing teacher to get nude photos
Two North Carolina teens are facing charges after they catfished their French teacher and then shared nude photos of him, officials said.
Brian Joshua Anderson and Brittney Rennee Luckenbaugh, both 16, were charged with misdemeanor disclosure of private images, according to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers said the teens used a fake social media account to contact David Laughinghouse, a French teacher at Swansboro High School in North Carolina.
The teens obtained X-rated photos of the 51-year-old teacher, which they shared with other students at school, according to news station WNCN.
They were taken into custody last week and each released on $5,000 bail.
“This investigation remains an active one and we are potentially looking for other incidents of catfishing,” Sheriff Hans Miller told the Jacksonville Daily News. Anderson and Luckenbaugh are both scheduled to appear June 15 in Onslow County District Court.
