First black woman to win top literary prize says cultural appropriation is ‘total nonsense’
Bernardine Evaristo, the first black woman to win the Booker Prize for fiction writing, dismissed the idea that artists cannot engage in “cultural appropriation.”
Evaristo, 60, was one of two 2019 Booker Prize winners, an annual award given to the author of an “outstanding fiction” work written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. Evaristo spoke about the book that won her the award, Girl, Woman, Other, and how it would have been impossible without “cultural appropriation” at the Hay Festival Winter Weekend on Friday, according to The Times.
“This whole idea of cultural appropriation, which is where you are not supposed to write beyond your own culture and so on, is ridiculous,” Evaristo said. “That would mean that I could never write white characters or white writers can never write black characters. Look in television; that happens all the time. But there is this idea that when it comes to fiction that you are supposed to stay in your lane. It is a total nonsense.”
Evaristo’s book follows the lives of a dozen either black or mixed-race people. One girl, named Megan, grows up and identifies as non-binary and changes “their” name to Morgan. Evaristo said that writing about Megan was “a sensitive area” because the character could offend people.
Evaristo said, however, that she is not overly worried about offending others with her work.
“That’s not my primary concern because you don’t know who is going to be offended by anything you write. I refuse to construct some kind of character who is going to appease everybody,” Evaristo said.

All You Need To Know About The Google+ Shutdown
It seems like googles attempt to rival Facebook has failed and Google+ will be shutting down and deleting all of its profiles on April 2nd.
As far as deletion goes, only the social media itself will be deleted, any photos on Google photos and things like Gmail and your Google account will remain unaffected.
If you unknowingly have Google plus, they will send you an email regarding the deletion of the account.
Their reason behind them getting rid of Google+ is due to the major nonusage of the site. Along with data leaks.
With that being said, maybe this is a good thing, Google having social media doesn’t really mix well as seen with Google plus. Hopefully Google has learned their lesson and they go back to the drawing board. What do you guys think about Google+ being deleted? Let me know your thoughts!
Pregnant woman beaten up after not giving boyfriend food stamp card
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man was arrested after allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend when she refused to give him her food stamp card, PIX11 sister station WREG reports.
The victim told police she was sitting in her car in the 3400 block of Briar Park West Saturday when Hosea Taylor walked up to the vehicle. That’s when he reportedly assaulted her and stole her backpack, which he thought contained her wallet.
After speaking with the victim, police said they spotted Taylor and followed him to a home on Winchester where he was taken into custody.
He reportedly admitted to stealing the backpack from the victim.
Taylor was charged with domestic assault and robbery.
In December, police responded to another alleged domestic incident involving the couple. Taylor was arrested in that incident but charges were later dropped.
Father stabs 16-month-old son to death, yells ‘Jesus is coming’
DALLAS — A father was charged with capital murder Tuesday after police said he stabbed his 16-month-old son at a Dallas-area apartment complex.
Blair Ness, 27, is charged in the death of his toddler son, Ashton Ness. Authorities said the father was shot in the leg by a neighbor trying to stop the attack on Sunday.
Lewisville police Capt. Mike Lane said Ness had significant injuries to his hand from the knife, along with the shooting wound.
Police also said witnesses reported that Ness yelled “Jesus is coming” before the attack.
There’s no clear motive behind the slaying. Authorities said Tuesday that detectives were interviewing the suspect. Bond was set at $1.5 million.
According to a police affidavit, the attack is believed to have begun inside Ness’ apartment, which was filled with a smoky haze and smelled of newly burnt marijuana. Police found a large blood stain on the master bedroom carpet, with a blood-stained folding knife and skull fragments lying by the bedroom door.
Officers found a trail of blood leading outside to where neighbors witnessed the attack, and several kitchen knives were found in the grass next to a pool of blood, the affidavit stated.
Ness was found on a patio and was subdued with a shock gun when he refused police commands.
As he was being handcuffed, Ness said: “I know everyone’s mad. I’m mad. I killed my son,” according to the affidavit.
Ness’ girlfriend and the child’s mother, Alexandra Murphy, arrived shortly after police. She said that when she left for work earlier Sunday, Ness was feeding their son.
She said she could think of no reason why Ness would want to hurt their son, according to the affidavit. Ness had been reading the Bible extensively recently, she said, and they had been attending church services.
A GoFundMe has been created to raise funds for Ashton Ness’ mother with expenses.

Construction worker finds noose at Queens home
BROAD CHANNEL, Queens— It’s the last thing Jawuan Blake, a construction worker, expected to see at his Queens job site Thursday.
“I come out, take a few steps, look up and see a noose hanging – my heart just stopped,” he said.
Blake told PIX11, Saturday, it was hurtful to see the noose on the side of the home on East 6th Road in Broad Channel.
The home is part of NYC’s Build it Back program, which launched after Superstorm Sandy.
“No one should have to come to work and see that, it’s 2018,” he said.
He took pictures and when he told his coworkers he said they made insensitive comments and ignored it.
“I feel like it’s not a joke or laughing matter,” he said.
John Kodetsky lives next door to where the noose was found.
“I don’t think it should have been done but I thought the guys were fooling around,” he said, adding he saw the noose.
“As a sign of a death mark, It’s kind of disturbing,” Rob Wilson, an electrician who has also been working on the home responded.
Workers at the site tell PIX11 they want Tishman Construction to take the matter seriously and take appropriate action.
PIX11 reached out to the company for comment and have not heard back from anyone yet.
The workers say they have a meeting with the company Monday morning.
