Maryland teen planned a mass shooting and suicide at her school
THURMONT, Md. (AP) — An 18-year-old student meticulously planned a mass shooting at her high school in which she intended to die, authorities in Maryland said Monday.
A shotgun, ammunition and bomb-making materials including nails and fireworks were found at Nichole Cevario’s home in Thurmont on Thursday, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said at a news conference.
There is no evidence that anyone else was involved, Jenkins said.
One of the teen’s parents notified Catoctin High School officials Thursday of a potential threat of violence and Cevario was removed from the classroom and turned over to investigators, the Frederick County sheriff’s office said in a statement. Cevario was later taken from the school to a hospital for an emergency evaluation and remains hospitalized, officials said.
“This attack was prevented by the parents, who stepped forward,” Jenkins said.
Cevario’s journal “clearly spelled out” detailed plans for an attack she had been working on for some time, including a timeline of the attack with her expectations for each stage, officials said. She had set April 5 as the day of the attack, the sheriff said. She was acquiring the materials and compiling details about school emergency procedures associated with drills conducted by school staff and on the school resource deputy.
Cevario’s diary showed “evidence of mental health issues, emotional issues,” Jenkins said. There was no indication that bullying was an issue, but the diary showed “a lot of frustration in her personal life,” Jenkins said.
Investigators don’t believe anyone was working with Cevario and they think they’ve eliminated any threat to the school and community, officials said. While explosive materials were located during the investigation, they weren’t combined in any form that created an explosive device.
Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant charging Cevario with possession of explosive material with intent to create a destructive device and possession of incendiary material with the intent to create a destructive device. They say the warrants will be served when she is released from the hospital.
A man who answered the phone at Cevario’s home and her attorney, Alan Winik, declined to comment.

Mother admits poisoning and burning nine-year-old daughter to death
A Canadian woman who murdered her nine-year-old daughter has been sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 18 years.
Laura Coward confessed to the second degree murder of Amber Lucius in a Calgary court last month.
A jury heard how she said she was taking the child stargazing following a bitter divorce from the girl’s father in which he won full custody. She then drove Amber to a remote Alberta location 60 miles north of Calgary, drugged her with sleeping pills and set fire to her car with her daughter inside.
A postmortem found Amber died of a combination of hypothermia, smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Coward was arrested two days after her daughter was reported missing, in August 2014, when she was found by police standing outside the burnt-out SUV, with Amber’s body still inside.
The 50-year-old had placed a handwritten note on the outside of the car’s driver-side door which read: “Help me. It was an accident. Locked keys in.”
Justice Scott Brooker sentenced Coward to life in prison on Friday, saying her punishment must “reflect society’s disgust and outrage”.
The judge said it was “the ultimate betrayal for Ms Coward to kill her own daughter”.
He described the killing as “vile, random and senseless” and said it appeared Coward did it “to get back at” her former husband, Duane Lucius.
However Mr Brooker said despite the severity of her crime, Coward deserved credit for pleading guilty to the murder and for appearing to demonstrate remorse.
The court had earlier heard that Coward, who had custody of Amber for the weekend only, gave her a toxic but non-lethal dose of a prescription sleeping medication. She mistakenly thought Amber was dead and filled the truck – while Amber was unconscious inside – with paper and plastic bags before setting it on fire with a propane torch and closing the door.
At her sentencing hearing last week, Coward begged the girl’s father and her own family and friends to forgive her.
“I want to say to the father, my family, friends that I’m responsible for my choices and I beg for their forgiveness and I plead for your mercy,” she told Mr Brooker.
Mr Lucius read a victim impact statement at that hearing saying he would never forgive Coward for the pain she has caused.
Fighting back tears, he said: “Since the moment Amber was born, she was the light of my life.
“She was energetic, talkative and full of joy. I will never get to watch my daughter grow up, but I know she would have done great in life.
“No sentence will do justice for what has happened to Amber. As a father, I have had to bury my child and nothing will bring her back. I can only hope that other children are not being used as bargaining chips in a divorce or used to hurt the other parent.
“Amber was my life and I will miss her every day until my end. I will never forget her.”
Coward’s life sentence was automatic following her confession, but the court was asked to decide how long she had to serve before being eligible for parole.
The Crown was asking for 20 years in custody before Coward could apply for parole, while the defense suggested 10 to 12 years would be sufficient.

West Virginia Mom Allegedly Killed Kids by Setting Their Beds on Fire and Locking Trailer Doors
A West Virginia woman allegedly killed her young sons intentionally by setting fire to their beds and locking the door of their trailer home, PEOPLE confirms.
A statement issued by the West Virginia State Fire Marshals confirms Wednesday’s arrest of Molly Joe Delgado, 28, of Falling Waters, for the Jan. 24 fire deaths of her boys Delmer, 3, and Justin, 5.
Delgado faces murder and arson charges.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, Delgado allegedly set fire to her sons’ beds as they slept.
She exited her family’s trailer, allegedly locking both boys and her husband inside.
Smoke awoke Delgado’s husband, who tried to save their sons but was unable to do so because of the flames. Delgado’s husband survived the fire.
Delgado’s father, Drew McCombs, who lives across the street, heard his son-in-law crying for help from a kitchen window and opened the trailer door, which had been secured from the outside, the criminal complaint alleges.
According to reports, McCombs tried to save his grandsons, but the heavy smoke made it impossible for him to find the boys.
“I got in there and I couldn’t see, I couldn’t see nothing — at all,” McCombs told the Associated Press. “I couldn’t find them.”
Delmer and Justin Delgado were pronounced dead at the scene.
Wednesday’s arrest follows a six-week investigation that involved personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, the Loudoun County Fire Marshal, the West Virginia State Police and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department.
Delgado is being held without bail and has yet to enter a plea to the three charges she is facing.
Court records do not indicate if she has a lawyer and efforts to reach her relatives Friday were unsuccessful.

Man accused of slitting 16-year-old’s throat, leaving her in Illinois garage
MARKHAM, Ill. — A man suspected of killing a teenage girl on Christmas Eve and leaving her in the garage of a suburban Illinois home was denied bond Friday.
Antonio Rosales, 32, is accused of murdering 16-year-old Desiree Robinson, from the South Side of Chicago, after meeting the teen online.
Rosales turned himself into police three days ago, according to WGN-TV. He admitted to the murder and explained to authorities how he met the victim through an ad on Backpage.com, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Police say Rosales invited Robinson to a home in Markham, Illinois, home where she later showed up with two friends. Witnesses later told police they saw Robinson and Rosales having sex in a truck during that first meeting.
Afterward, Robinson and her friends left, but investigators say the three girls came back a short time later because Rosales wanted to have sex with her again.
The two went into a garage next to the home while Robinson’s friends fell asleep in their car.
Rosales told police a fight started after he didn’t have cash to pay her.
During the altercation, prosecutors say, Rosales punched her in the face and strangled her as she tried to call for help.
Around 9:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve, Robinson’s friends woke up and realized she hadn’t returned and asked the homeowner to open the garage, according to investigators.Prosecutors say Rosales then used a knife to slash Robinson’s throat before locking the garage, telling Robinson’s friends that she’d be out shortly and leaving.
That’s when they found her naked body on the ground inside, along with a bloody knife, prosecutors said.
Meanwhile, police say Rosales – who had cuts and swelling on his knuckles and blood on his pants – went to a friend’s home, then his sister’s house.
He turned himself in on December 27th and admitted to the murder, according to court documents.
Rosales’ prior criminal history includes two years in Indiana prison for robbery, assault and battery. He had current warrants out for his arrest out of Massachusetts for a robbery last August.
Rosales is due back in court Jan. 18th.

Woman Killed Stranger Who Slapped Stepson On Hoops Court, Prosecutors Say
COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A West Side woman shot a stranger to death who slapped her 13-year-old stepson on a basketball court, prosecutors said Thursday.
The incident started Aug. 8 in the late afternoon as the boy played basketball near Springfield Avenue and Polk Street in the Garfield Park neighborhood, Assistant State’s Attorney Bryan Grissman said during a bond hearing Thursday.
The 13-year-old got in an argument with 22-year-old Ireal Mitchell, and Mitchell slapped the teen, prosecutors said.
The boy went home and told his stepmother, Sirena Crosby, 38, what happened, Grissman said. Crosby went to the basketball court to confront Mitchell. After a short time, she returned home.
That’s when she asked a man “to get a gun,” Grissman said. She and the accomplice got into Crosby’s silver Chevy Malibu and headed toward the basketball courts, according to prosecutors.
Crosby spotted Mitchell in the 800 block of South Springfield Avenue, Grissman said. As Mitchell walked by Crosby’s car, she pointed a gun from the driver’s side window and fired several shots — fatally striking Mitchell in his arm and back, police and prosecutors said.
Crosby then sped off, Grissman said.
The shooting was captured on surveillance footage, prosecutors said, and multiple witnesses were able to identify Crosby and her silver Chevy Malibu.
Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Thursday ordered Crosby, of the 400 block of North Springfield Avenue, held in lieu of $3 million bail.
Florida man shoots, kills brother over cheeseburger
ST. CLOUD, Fla. – An Osceola County man is facing first-degree murder charges after police say he shot and killed his brother during an argument over a cheeseburger.
St. Cloud Police received a call just after 10 p.m. about a shooting at a home in the 600 block of 6th Street, according to Central Florida News 13.
According to investigators, Benjamin Middendorf, 25, shot his brother, Nicholas Middendorf, 28, in the chest with a 9mm handgun during an argument.
Nicholas Middendorf died at the home.
“This is an impulsive incident that happened. Maybe anger, rage. But it was definitely over a verbal dispute that sadly, it was over a cheeseburger,” St. Cloud Police Department spokesperson Denise Roberts said. “It’s something that could have possibly been prevented, if he had held back those emotions.”
An arrest affidavit says their mother and the shooting victim, Nicholas, had been drinking with friends. Benjamin told detectives he does not drink.
Benjamin Middendorf was arrested on charges of premeditated first-degree murder. He was taken to the Osceola County Jail and is being held on no bond.
