Police warn parents of ’48-Hour Challenge’, which encourages kids to go missing
(KMOV.com) – A warning is being issued to parents about a new challenge for teens that is circulating Facebook, the 48-hour challenge.
It encourages teens to go missing for up to two days at a time and awards points for every social media mention while they’re missing.
Police say it is not only dangerous but could also tie them up while there are real emergencies.
Child psychiatrists say it’s never a good idea to assume your child knows better than to involve themselves in such an internet challenge.
Police say anyone caught participating in the 48-hour challenge could face charges.
Teen suffocated nephew after he asked to play video games
A Colorado teen girl faces murder charges after she allegedly suffocated her nephew then hid his body inside a closet, according to authorities.
Jennie Bunsom, 16, was identified as the suspect in the death of 7-year-old Jordan Vong, who was reported missing Aug. 6 before his body was found at his Denver home, according to the Denver Post.
Bunsom allegedly killed the boy, who asked her to play video games with him, wrapped his body in a blanket and stuffed it in her bedroom closet.
Police obtained a warrant the next day to enter the family’s home and discovered the boy’s body hidden, according to officials.
“[Bunsom] didn’t tell any of her family what she had done to Jordan because she was afraid,” a probable cause statement obtained by the Denver Post said. “Nor did she tell any of her family where she had hid Jordan.”
The teen girl appeared in court Tuesday morning where it was ruled that she will face first-degree murder charges as an adult.

Missing baby survives 9 hours buried in woods
MISSOULA, Mont. — A 5-month-old infant who miraculously survived more than nine hours being buried under a pile of sticks and debris in the woods of western Montana suffered only minor injuries despite wearing wet and soiled clothes in cold weather, authorities said Monday.
The baby boy is otherwise in good condition, authorities said.
Missoula County Sheriff’s deputies were called about 8 p.m. Saturday about a man threatening people in the Lolo Hot Springs area of the Lolo National Forest. Deputies apprehended the man, who indicated that a baby was buried somewhere in the woods.
The sheriff’s office hastily put together a search crew of federal, state and local officials that combed the forest outside the hot springs for six hours before a deputy heard a baby’s cry at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
He found the baby face-down under the pile of sticks and debris, dressed only in a wet and soiled onesie in the 46-degree weather.
“He suffered some minor scrapes and bruising but overall is in good health,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Brenda Bassett said in a statement Monday.
The baby was taken to a hospital. Custody of the child has been referred to the state Division of Child and Family Services, whose spokesman, Chuck Council, did not immediately return a call for comment on Monday.
Francis Crowley, 32, was being held on $50,000 bail on a charge of criminal endangerment. Additional charges will follow, the sheriff’s office said in a statement Sunday.
“For all of us at the sheriff’s office, this is what we call a miracle,” the statement said. “For the officers who were present for this event, it’s especially hard knowing what this small baby endured in the last 24 hours.”
The nature of Crowley’s relationship to the baby was not immediately clear. There was no information on whether Crowley had an attorney.

FATHER ACCUSED IN FATAL STABBING OF 2 DAUGHTERS IN NORTH CAROLINA
In an exclusive interview with family members Saturday, ABC11 was told the father accused of murdering his two young children was an “abuser.”
Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said Genesis and Serenity Freeman – who were just 2-years-old and 4-days-old – were found stabbed multiple times near N.C. Highway 211 and Army Road in the Raeford area. Their bodies were found in a car parked in a wooded area. The children’s aunt, Marvina Smith, told ABC11 Saturday afternoon that the children’s mother attempted suicide when she discovered her kids had been murdered. She is currently recovering in the hospital.
“I want him to suffer,” Smith said. “The way them kids suffered. I want him to suffer.”
On Friday, the Fayetteville Police Department said the children’s father, Tillman Freeman, was in custody and had refused to say where the children were. He was charged then with two counts of child abuse and child neglect. He’s now also charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
“It’s kind of hard to find the words to describe what this feels like,” said Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin. “I know people read it, I know people see the story and hear about it, but to be out here on the scene and actually see this stuff, to see these children lifeless and brutally stabbed…I don’t care how many years you’ve been in it. How many times you’ve been in it or seen things, this was not a good experience. Everybody’s taking this real hard. Our heart goes out to the family, to the mother.”
Fayetteville police said the children were at the center of a domestic-related incident between Freeman, 30, and his wife, who was at the hospital at the time, and Freeman left with the children.
“From what our investigation’s telling us they had a dispute, where (Freeman) allegedly made accusations about the babies not being his, a child not being his or maybe her involvement with someone, and when he took the kids we understand he left in a rage,” Peterkin told ABC11.
“I feel sad and hurt, but there’s nothing I can do about it,” one of the relatives, whose name is being withheld, said.
Peterkin said Freeman accused his wife of cheating on him. She was in a local hospital when Freeman took them.
Freeman was arrested Friday afternoon after employees at a doctor’s office in Raeford reported a suspicious-looking man standing in front of their building.
During questioning, Freeman indicated the children were in Hoke County, and he may have harmed them, Peterkin said.
The SBI is investigating. Freeman has a court appearance on Monday.
