McDonald’s is testing a new chicken sandwich
After months of being bested in the Chicken Sandwich Wars, McDonald’s is testing a new weapon.
On Monday, McDonald’s kicked off a test of its new crispy chicken sandwich and deluxe crispy chicken sandwich in Houston, Texas, and Knoxville, Tennessee.
The crispy chicken sandwich has a fried chicken filet topped with butter and pickles, while the deluxe version also includes tomatoes, lettuce, and mayo.
Both sandwiches use a new chicken filet that has not been served at McDonald’s, differentiating them from the McChicken and the buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich. And the new sandwiches appear to be served in a foil bag, a presentation that Chick-fil-A and Popeyes use but McDonald’s has not.
McDonald’s has been working to perfect a new chicken sandwich for months, even before Popeyes launched its own earlier this year.
CNBC reported in July that McDonald’s franchisees were pushing the company to make the development of a new chicken sandwich its “top priority,” citing Chick-fil-A’s results. A sandwich that McDonald’s tested earlier this year apparently underwhelmed restaurant operators, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The launch of Popeyes’ chicken sandwich highlighted McDonald’s need for a superior chicken sandwich. The fast-food giant reported in October that it lost part of its share in the chicken category during the so-called Chicken Sandwich Wars.
McDonald’s is also planning to roll out chicken at breakfast in 2020, according to leaked documents viewed by Business Insider, though the company has not announced what the new menu item — or items — will be.

Burger King Takes a Shot at McDonald’s Happy Meals With a Dark Ad and Sad Teens
Boxed meals like the Pissed Meal, Salty Meal and DGAF Meal are a clear shot at McDonald’s Happy Meal.
Article via Entrepreneur
Burger King is taking another jab at McDonald’s.
On Wednesday, the fast-food chain debuted a series of “Real Meals,” a clear counter to McDonald’s iconic Happy Meals. The moods of these boxed meals include the Pissed Meal, Blue Meal, Salty Meal, YAAAS Meal and DGAF Meal.
The Real Meals boxes — which include the Whopper meal or a Whopper, fries, and a drink — are available at a handful of locations in Austin, Seattle, Miami, Los Angeles and New York City starting Wednesday.
While the Real Meal rollout is limited, it is part of a wider campaign by the chain to promote mental health, with Burger King releasing an atypical commercial of sorts on the subject.
“Not everybody wakes up happy,” a young man says in the starting seconds of the video. “Sometimes you feel sad, scared, crappy. All I ask is that you let me feel my way.”
The video goes on to show a teenage girl discovering the word “skank” carved into her locker, an angry woman yelling that she just told her boss “to go f— himself,” and a young man despairing over student loans. Other people featured in the video are dealing with being ghosted and being judged as a young mother.
The video closes with the words: “No one is happy all the time. And that’s OK.” Images of the different Real Meals then flash on the screen.

Burger King partnered with the nonprofit Mental Health America to launch the Real Meal campaign.
“A natural extension of encouraging people to ‘be their way’ is encouraging them to ‘feel their way,'” Burger King said in a press release. “With the pervasive nature of social media, there is so much pressure to appear happy and perfect. With Real Meals, the Burger King brand celebrates being yourself and feeling however you want to feel.”
Toddler stuck ‘used condom’ from McDonald’s in mouth: report
A McDonald’s customer in Australia says she was “sickened” to find her 2-year-old daughter stuck a “used condom” she found at the chain in her mouth, according to a report.
The little girl’s mom — who only wanted to be identified as Wendy — said her daughter now requires STD testing after the incident Friday night at the fast-food joint in Perth, the local 10 daily reported.
“I don’t know how it happened but when my husband next looks at her, she’s sucking on a black condom,” Wendy said. “I ran into the bathrooms, washed her mouth and hands and came out and gave her a drink.”
The couple said they rushed their daughter to a doctor — who suggested they retrieve the condom from the restaurant for testing, according to 10 daily.
But the McDonald’s reportedly refused to give the condom back to them.
“What if there is an STD there and my daughter is going to get it? We have to wait two months to do a blood test on her,” the mom said.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said the restaurant was investigating the incident.
“We are very sorry that the incident occurred, and take situations like this seriously,” the rep said. “Cleanliness and safety are our top priorities and we ensure the shift manager on duty conducts what we refer to as a travel path every 30 minutes.”

I was beat up in McDonald’s — and the employees just watched
She went in for a cheeseburger and fries and ended up McPummeled at a Manhattan fast-food joint owned by polo-playing scion Bruce Colley.
Elizabeth Storelli says in a new lawsuit that workers at Colley’s McDonald’s at West 71st Street and Broadway failed to help her when she accidentally bumped into a woman in the crowded eatery and was severely beaten.
“I thought I was going to die,’’ Storelli, a 49-year-old nurse, told The Post.
Storelli said she was headed home from a bar, where she’d had a couple of glasses of wine with girlfriends, around 10:30 p.m. July 24, 2015, when she stopped at the Mickey D’s.
The Upper West Side joint is owned by the man who famously broke up Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s marriage to Kerry Kennedy and whose elderly mother was found murdered at his family’s Westchester County estate in November 2015.
“I hadn’t eaten a lot, so I went in there and ordered some fries and a cheeseburger,” Storelli recalled.
“There were a lot of people in there, and a girl bumped into me and things just escalated from there. She called me a ‘white b—h,’ and that’s when a guy came over and poured the soda over my head,” Storelli said.
“I was in shock. I did swear. I was like, ‘What the f–k?’
“The next thing I know, I saw a group of people coming toward me.”
Storelli said she fled the restaurant, but an unruly group of customers followed her outside, and the next thing she knew, “Once I got out of the McDonald’s, they had me down on the sidewalk, and guys and girls were just surrounding me and punching me on the head and kicking me.”
Not a single McDonald’s employee came to her aid, the woman said.
“There were probably three [McDonald’s workers] at the registers. I remember seeing a manager on the floor walking around,’’ Storelli said. “Nobody got involved at all. They were just watching.’’
Even a Manhattan Supreme Court justice who recently green lighted the woman’s 2016 suit said, “Once soda was poured on her head, defendants had a duty to take protective action.’’
A good Samaritan finally came to Storelli’s rescue and cradled her head until cops arrived.
Storelli suffered a concussion and broken rib in the attack.
Two women, Joselin Santos, 16, and Annie Figueros, 33, were charged with assault and harassment in the case. But they ended up with no criminal records, and their cases are sealed.
Storelli is suing franchise owner Colley for unspecified damages.
Her lawyer, Joseph Napoli, said the eatery had security protocols in place instructing employees on how to deal with violent incidents, but they weren’t followed.
Napoli said there is surveillance video from inside the eatery but that McDonald’s told him the cops took it, and he can’t get it from them.
Colley told The Post in an email, “Our biggest priority is always the safety and well-being of our customers and employees. Due to pending litigation it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.’’

Alabama McDonald’s gunman killed by armed dad, who is injured in shootout
A brave dad armed with a pistol stopped what could have been a mass shooting Saturday inside an Alabama McDonald’s when he took down a masked gunman who had stormed in and opened fire.
The unidentified father was leaving the establishment with his sons when a masked man walked into the Birmingham fast-food restaurant and started shooting, WBRC-TV reported. The father returned fire and, during the ensuing shootout, the gunman, the father and one of the man’s teenage sons were struck, according to the station.
The gunman, who was not identified, later died of his injuries. The other two injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Markus Washington, one of the McDonald’s employees, told WBRC-TV he was making two quarter-pounders when bullets started to fly. Washington said he ran into the freezer, where he heard about 15 shots fired.
“I’m feeling grateful,” he told the station. “Wrapping my head around it all, I was just wishing someone would come wake me up from this nightmare.”
Washington, oblivious to the shootout taking place outside the freezer door, feared the worst.
“All we hear is like different gunfire, so in my mind, I’m imagining everybody is dead. He’s looking for us,” he said. Washington added he was thankful the armed customer was there.
“Wrapping my head around it all, I was just wishing someone would come wake me up from this nightmare.”
“He’s my hero. Because I can only imagine how it would’ve went if he wasn’t armed. We might not be here having this interview,” Washington said.
The father is not expected to face charges, police said.
Authorities are now working to determine if the gunman intended to rob the restaurant, was targeting an employee or planned something more nefarious.
“Things like this are difficult for both families. The gentleman who unfortunately lost his life, the teenage boy who is in the hospital recovering from his injuries and the father who is also recovering from his injuries,” Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Bryan Shelton said, according to WVTM-13. “It’s not easy being a father and watching your child get injured, get hurt like that. It’s a really heartwrenching experience.”

Man pulls gun on McDonald’s worker when restaurant doesn’t have steak bagel
WARREN, Ohio — Police say they’re looking for a man who pulled out a gun after being told by an Ohio McDonald’s drive-thru worker there were no steak bagels available.
Police say the incident occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to WJW. Officials for the McDonald’s say the man wanted a steak bagel and was upset he couldn’t get one at that time of morning.
The worker who called 911 told police that two men inside the customer’s car appeared to be around 20 years old. She said the driver called her a vulgar name after pulling out the gun and then cursed at her again before driving away.
Police say the incident is one of the most unusual calls they have ever received.
“We have had people upset in drive thrus before because their orders are messed up, but I don’t remember anyone pulling a gun because they couldn’t get a sandwich they wanted,” said Detective Wayne Mackey.
There was no video from the restaurant security cameras, police said.
City Law Director Greg Hicks said police are hoping someone in the area may have noticed something early Wednesday morning.
“We want to get these guys and that gun off the street,” Hicks said.
Bay Area McDonald’s Employee Tries to Flush Newborn Down Toilet After Giving Birth at Work
A McDonald’s cashier is facing an attempted murder charge after giving birth to a boy while at work and then trying to flush the newborn down a toilet inside the Redwood City restaurant, prosecutors said.
Sarah Lockner was working as a cashier at the McDonald’s restaurant on Chestnut Street on the evening of Sept. 4 when she complained of stomach pain, according to the San Mateo County district attorney’s office.
During her night shift, prosecutors said, the 25-year-old Redwood City woman visited the restaurant’s bathroom multiple times, to the concern of a co-worker.
When the co-worker entered the bathroom to check on Lockner, prosecutors said, there was blood on the floor.
ockner tried to dismiss the bloody mess and blamed it on a heavy period, prosecutors said.
But Lockner’s behavior had drawn the attention of a second co-worker, who also decided to check on her.
The second employee walked into the bathroom, peered over Lockner’s stall and “saw a newborn baby face down in toilet bowl,” prosecutors said.
Lockner had her hand on the baby’s back, according to the district attorney’s office. The employee then heard the toilet flush.
Police arrived later to find the baby in Lockner’s arms, San Mateo County Dist. Atty. Steve Wagstaffe told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.
The baby had no pulse and was not breathing, so officers performed CPR and rushed the infant to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, he said.
The infant is alive and in stable condition, but the extent of the baby’s brain injuries was not known, Wagstaffe said.
Lockner claimed she didn’t know she was pregnant, prosecutors said.
She has been charged with felony child abuse and inflicting great bodily injury, along with the attempted murder charge, prosecutors said.
Lockner is scheduled to be arraigned in San Mateo County court on Sept. 18. She is being held on $11 million bail.
Boy, 8, Drives His 4-Year-Old Sister to McDonald’s After Watching YouTube Instructional Videos
An 8-year-old Ohio boy drove the family van to McDonald’s, with his 4-year-old sister riding shotgun, because they really wanted some cheeseburgers, police said.
The child maintained the speed limit and executed a perfect left turn into the drive-thru lane, where he came to a stop at the window and placed his order.
“It was remarkable,” East Palestine Police Officer Jacob Koehler told InsideEdition.com Wednesday. “He got him and his sister to McDonald’s without hitting anything or running any red lights.”
The boy took money from his piggy bank to finance the fast-food adventure, and lifted the vehicle’s keys after his father went to bed early and his mother nodded off on the couch.
Police received two calls from pedestrians about a little boy driving a big van, Koehler said. The officer arrived at the McDonald’s at about 8 p.m. Sunday, just as the boy pulled up to the drive-thru window.
“He said he and his sister looked up how to drive on YouTube,” Koehler said. “They waited until mom fell asleep and grabbed her keys.”
They drove a mile to Mickey D’s, stopping at four intersections along the way. They’d already had dinner, but the boy told police “me and my sister really wanted a cheeseburger,” Koehler recounted.
The boy was able to reach the pedals by standing up while driving. “This was a one-ton work van. This thing was huge,” the officer said.
A customer at the restaurant recognized the children and called their grandparents. Police called the parents.
They all hurried to the restaurant.
How did they react?
“I’m not sure there are any words to accurately describe their reactions,” Koehler said.
Employees thought it was a prank when the kids pulled up. “They thought the parents were in the back and it was a joke,” the officer said.
The little boy certainly didn’t think it was funny when the cops showed up. He burst into tears when he grasped how badly he had messed up, Koehler said.
“He started crying when he realized he’d done something wrong,” Koehler said.
But he didn’t get into any trouble with the law, as no charges were filed over the incident.
“I was expecting to get call after call about mailboxes being knocked over, stupid stuff like that,” Koehler said. “But he didn’t hit a single thing.”
