DMX Wants Jay-Z to Face Off Against Him in Instagram Music Battle
A trend started with the inaugural “Verzuz” music challenges that pits two artists in a virtual Instagram Live ring for a friendly back-and-forth with their hits.
It’s less of a battle and more of celebration, but the popularity of the event has spawned discussions about who should be squaring up in these one-on-one sessions. Some names aren’t in the running, and others—such as Ray J—have been shut down by fans.
But there are artists who have the catalogs to step into the arena and a fan base who would show up. The latest to toss his own hat into the ring is Yonkers-bred rapper DMX, and he wants Jay-Z to get at him (pun intended).
DMX named Jay-Z for his hip-hop match
As mentioned, people are having spirited talks about which artists they’d like to see next for the Verzuz series. When DMX was a guest on NORE’s hot podcast, Drink Champs, he was asked who he would face off with, and his answer was Jay-Z.
As DJ EFN said, it would be epic for hip-hop culture. Both of their debut albums dropped in 1996, and it just so happens that Verzuz co-creator Swizz Beatz has produced songs for both of them too.
DMX and Jay-Z have a history
DMX said it would be battle number three for them, and for those out of the loop, the two rappers have a history of duking it out with freestyles. Would you like to hear the story of how it all got started way back when?
DMX was a known battle rapper in his early days, and it’s a mantle he still carries. Back in the ‘90s, the two met up in the Bronx (some say Harlem) for what became a legendary battle.
Damon Dash says it went on for hours and though it was a gentleman’s game, Murder Inc. CEO Irv Gotti implied that DMX never liked Jay-Z.
During an interview with The Breakfast Club in 2016, DMX said he was over his anger toward his rap frenemy, Jay-Z. As it stands, people still argue over who won that battle.
Another one happened during Jay-Z’s Hard Knock Life Tour in 1999, but it was still a friendly backstage contest. You can find footage on YouTube. It wasn’t all bad blood, as the two rap legends have even collaborated on a few tracks over the years.
Fans think DMX is a formidable ‘opponent’ for Jay-Z
While the likelihood of Jay-Z returning to the scene in an intimate internet format like Verzuz low, fans can still hope. Many believe DMX is one of the only rappers in the game today who can rock at the same table as Hov. On Instagram, comments were rolling in.
One person wrote, “DMX got hits and street anthems. Let’s not forget.” Another said, “I already knew who X was gonna pick. That was and still is his peer.”
And one noted, “Everyone forgot that DMX beat Jay in a rap battle.” Ultimately, people agree that this would be epic and fun for hip-hop fans to watch. But don’t count on it happening.

Dame Dash Shuts Down Nick Cannon’s Questions About Jay-Z & Foxy Brown Rumors
“It sounds like you got a question for Jay … ask him.”
Nick Cannon‘s been releasing short clips of his podcast “Cannon’s Class” on Instagram over the past few days. The first episode with Dame Dash was published earlier today. Cannon shared a clip of the two discussing Aaliyah‘s relationship with R. Kelly yesterday, but in the full episode, Cannon attempted to ask Dash about Jay-Z’s relationship with Foxy Brown.
There have been rumors floating around for a while about Jay-Z and Foxy Brown having a relationship when she was underage. Cannon attempted to get some answers from Dash about Foxy Brown’s age when she signed to Roc-A-Fella. “I wasn’t paying attention to Foxy Brown … I didn’t sign Foxy Brown,” he told Nick Cannon. When Cannon said that he thought Brown was 16 when she signed to Jay-Z, Dash quickly fired back, telling Cannon to say what’s on his mind.
“I thought Foxy was 16, that’s all I’m sayin’,” Cannon said. He later said that he thought there was “something between her and Jay.”
Dash told Cannon, “It sounds like you have a question for Jay. Ask him.” Adding, “You keep asking me questions y’all want to ask him ’cause he ain’t here. Ask him, I ain’t got shit to do with that and I don’t even know nothing about that.”

JAY-Z Cites Racial Discrimination in Trademark Infringement Case
JAY seeks to halt arbitration in lawsuit over Roc Nation logo, due to lack of black arbitrators
JAY-Z and Roc Nation are currently embroiled in a trademark case with the brand management company Iconix Brand Group. Iconix, which bought JAY-Z’s Rocawear in 2007, claimed in the 2017 lawsuit that it owns the Roc Nation logo and that JAY-Z is infringing on its trademark by using the logo on Major League Baseball apparel. Earlier this year, according to Page Six, Iconix filed for an arbitration proceeding against JAY-Z’s team, asking them to reveal financial information about their companies.
In a new development in the case, JAY-Z’s team has asked the court to halt arbitration because of an alleged lack of diversity in the American Arbitration Association (AAA), according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the memorandum, filed today (November 28), JAY-Z’s lawyers write, “The AAA’s arbitration procedures, and specifically its roster of neutrals for large and complex cases in New York, deprive black litigants like Mr. Carter and his companies of the equal protection of the laws, equal access to public accommodations, and mislead consumers into believing that they will receive a fair and impartial adjudication.”
According to the filing, “The AAA was able to provide only three neutrals [on its ‘Large and Complex Cases’ roster] it identified as African-American: two men—one of whom was a partner at the law firm representing Iconix in this arbitration and thus had a glaringly obvious conflict of interest—and one woman.”
As a result, JAY-Z and his team claim, “The AAA’s procedures… are contrary to New York public policy and violate the Equal Protection Clause of the New York State Constitution, various state civil rights laws, and the New York Deceptive Practices Act.”
Pitchfork has contacted JAY-Z’s representatives.

Beyoncé Just Shared 169 Outfit Pics With Jay-Z and Blue Ivy on Her Site
Beyoncé is the kind of celebrity who keeps a low profile most of the time, but every now and then, she’ll pop on her site and share a generous, intimate look at her life with her fans. Last night, she did just that, uploading a year’s worth of outfit photos on her site—her gift on her birthday to all of us. There’s shots of her, Jay Z, and her oldest daughter Blue Ivy Carter. There are many, many designer outfits. Miu Miu is featured! Dolce & Gabbana! It’s truly a lot to take in.
Bey started her photo spam with an honest reflection on her last year:
At 36, I became a new mother of 3. I breastfed twins. I renewed my vows with my husband of 10 years. I came back home to the stage of Coachella, after pregnancy. Then my husband and I released our album together, Everything Is Love. And we’ve been touring with our family around the world and loving it. This year has been monumental for me. I thank God for everyone in my life. Thank you for all the positivity and for the beautiful birthday wishes. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn from my past, living in the present, and surrendering to the future. I love you, Hive. B.
From there, she posted outfit after outfit shot, including a couple photos of her 37th birthday celebration in Italy. Here, a compilation of some of the best looks. They’re all spectacular though, so see every one in its full glory on her site here.
A couple rare shots of her and Jay Z being affectionate:

Evans student stunned after receiving $100K for college tuition from Beyonce, Jay-Z
Keshawn Morgan, a senior at Evans High School, had never been to a concert before. So he was thrilled on Wednesday when his local Boys & Girls Club — where he’d been going since second grade — invited him to the Beyoncé and Jay-Z show that night.
When club leaders told him and the other teenagers who had been invited that they had V.I.P. seating, he was even more excited.
But when DJ Khaled, who opened the show at Camping World Stadium, told the audience he had a surprise $100,000 college scholarship to announce, the 17-year-old didn’t think much about it at all.
Until the performer began to describe the winner, saying he was ranked third in his class and was president of the Spanish honor society, and then a puzzled Keshawn thought, “What? That’s me.”
A video of the event shows his mouth drop and his hands briefly cover his face as he realizes he’s the winner, and then his name is announced. He and his friends erupt in cheers, as they jump up and down and hug him.
“Oh my gosh,” a stunned Keshawn said in the video posted on Facebook by the Boys & Girls Cubs of America. “I can’t believe this. I want to be a lawyer. I can’t believe I won this.”
In a phone interview Thursday, he still sounded stunned..
“I really couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I couldn’t even like put it in words,” he added. “It was crazy.”

Beyonce’s Three Kids Joined Her on the Set of Her ‘Vogue’ Shoot and Blue Ivy Took Control!
The magazine released behind-the-scene footage on Tuesday, August 14. In the clip, which is set to Curtis Mayfield’s “The Makings of You,” Beyonce is seen posing for photographer Tyler Mitchell, inspecting Polaroid photos and goofing around during outtakes. But it’s a cartwheeling Blue who steals the show. At the beginning of the video, the little girl takes control of the camera and announces, “I’m gonna zoom in for you guys, OK?” Later, Blue melts hearts when she kisses her baby brother.
The Destiny’s Child alum opened up about her hopes and dreams for her daughters Blue and Rumi. “It’s important to me that they see themselves too — in books, films and on the runways. It’s important to me that they can see themselves as CEOs, as bosses, and that they know they can write the script for their own lives — that they can speak their minds and have no ceiling,” the multi-Grammy winning artist told Vogue. “They don’t have to be a certain type or fit into a specific category. They don’t have to be politically correct as long as they’re authentic, respectful, compassionate, and empathetic.”
Beyoncé will support her daughters choices later in life without judgement: “They can explore any religion, fall in love with any race, and love who they want to love.”

Jay-Z Is Beefing With the Mayor of Philadelphia
Jay-Z Is Beefing With the Mayor of Philadelphia Over His Made in America Festival
While there’s a potential beef brewing between Beyoncé and the city of Rome, there’s one already roaring between her husband and the city of Philadelphia. Jay-Z has published an op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer accusing the city’s mayor, Jim Kenney, of attempting to shut down Jay’s annual Made in America Festival. Jay claims that Mayor Kenney banned next year’s festival from its usual location of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway without notice, and tried to get this year’s festival canceled.
We are disappointed that the mayor of the city of Philadelphia would evict us from the heart of the city, through a media outlet, without a sit-down meeting, notice, dialogue, or proper communication. It signifies zero appreciation for what Made In America has built alongside the phenomenal citizens of this city. In fact, this administration immediately greeted us with a legal letter trying to stop the 2018 event.
The letter goes on to slam the mayor for his failure to support a minority-owned business that financially benefits the city. Jay ends by saying he and his team “will discuss our options internally and handle accordingly,” meaning his festival could soon be on the market for a new city. Hey, Hov, your hometown is available!
Update, July 18th, at 8:10 p.m.: Mayor Kenney’s office has issued the following statement in response to the op-ed: “The City of Philadelphia supports the Made in America festival and is greatly appreciative of all that it has done for Philadelphia. We are committed to its continued success and thank them for their partnership. We hope to be able to resolve what has been an unfortunate misunderstanding. We are working with Roc Nation and Live Nation to resolve this issue and we are committed to continuing our partnership with the Made in America festival.”

Watch Michelle Obama Dance to Jay-Z With Beyonce’s Mom
The Carters also debuted their collaborative song “Apeshit” during second Paris show
danced joyously to Jay-Z‘s “On to the Next One” on Sunday during the rapper’s joint concert with Beyoncé in Paris, France. The former First Lady joined Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, in the front row – and even getting a quick onstage smile from Jay-Z.
Another video shows Obama and Knowles walking up to their VIP spots as husband-and-wife duo the Carters performed Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love.” Fans erupted with screams and photo snaps after recognizing the celebrity guest.
The Carters also performed their single “Apeshit” live for the first time that night. They modified the song as the evening’s farewell, dropping verses to make space for “thank you”s and salutes to their band. “Please give it up for my beautiful husband,” Beyoncé said as a cinematic list of production credits scrolled across a massive screen.
The Carters and Obamas famously share a long-running bond. Last year, former President Barack Obama helped induct Jay-Z into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, calling the rapper a “true American original” in his speech. “I like to think Mr. Carter and I understand each other,” he said. “Nobody who met us when we were younger men would have expected us to be where we are today.”

Beyonce Stranded by Flying Stage Malfunction (Watch)
The challenge with high-tech concert production is, like all machinery, sometimes it malfunctions. And Saturday night, at the Warsaw stop of Jay-Z and Beyonce’s “On the Run II” tour, a flying stage that ordinarily enables the singer to hover over the grown got stuck 20 feet in the air, forcing a rather undignified exit.
Stage techs were forced to go old-school to bring Beyonce back down to earth via an ordinary ladder. The band vamped while Beyonce initially appeared reluctant to descend via the ladder — understandable considering her towering heels — but eventually capitulated.
In a fan video (h/t Daily Beast), fans can be heard chanting the singer’s name while one yells in a thick Polish accent, “You can do it!” The fan who posted the video wrote: “Beyoncé’s flying stage got broken at the end of the show in Warsaw and she had to walk down on a ladder. She also gave us a little cute dance!”

Jay-Z Is Now President of Puma’s Basketball Operations
Jay-Z continues to make power moves after droping his joint album with goddess Beyonce
Adam Petrick, Puma’s global director of brand and marketing, told Complex: “We’ve been working with Roc Nation for quite some time. They’ve been great partners to us for several years. We’ve done many different deals with many different ambassadors.” He added that when the company went to Jigga about the deal, the rapper and business mogul felt that it “was something he wanted to be a part of.”
In addition to Jay-Z, Complex reports, the company has signed top NBA draft prospects DeAndre Ayton from the University of Arizona, Marvin Bagley III from Duke and Zhaire Smith from Texas Tech.
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, will play an active role in selecting players to join Puma’s basketball division as well as assisting in the art design and overall concept and direction of the brand.
Puma and Jay-Z have already been in business together for over a year, according to ESPN. He was outfitted in Puma sneakers and apparel during his 2017 promotional tour for his 4:44 album.
“What’s important to him on a day like today is that it’s clear we’re making a serious push with players like Bagley and Ayton and Smith. We’re making a serious statement about the entry of the category, that we want to be a performance brand, but then also very culturally focused. It’s clear that we’re looking at basketball through the lens of culture, and thinking about the fashion of basketball, the music of basketball, all the aspects of culture around basketball, as much as the on-court presence that we will have,” Petrick said, according to Complex.
