Instagram beauty influencer slammed for ‘blackface’ photos: ‘I am disgusted’
A professional make-up artist and beauty influencer has been criticized after she shared photos and a video that followers accused of containing “blackface.”
Ghadeer Sultan has more than two million followers on Instagram who have been left shocked by the video, which she uploaded to her page on New Year’s Eve.
The Kuwaiti woman is lip-syncing to We Are the World 25 for Haiti sporting a variety of different colored wigs and skin tones, from light to dark.
“No matter where you are from or what you believe in, we are all children of this world, and we all share it together equally,” she captioned the video.
“Beauty comes in all shapes and colors, so let’s love each other and celebrate our unity. I love u all, happy new year #happynewyear #happy_new_year #2020.”
However, not many people were impressed by Ghadeer’s efforts and shared their outrage at her choice to darken her face.
“Darkening your face, regardless of the context or the circumstances, is always unacceptable because of the racist history of blackface,” one wrote.
“Black face really??? I am disgusted,” another said.
“This is just a straight up black face, which is very offensive and as an educated make-up artist you should know better about that, you want to show your abilities or talent on black skin USE A BLACK MODEL !!! Period,” another stated.
“This is the most offensive thing I’ve seen. You can portray togetherness without disrespecting an entire culture. So uneducated, this is beyond unnecessary and unacceptable,” someone else wrote.
Many begged the social media star to delete the video, branding it “crazy” and “offensive.”
“This is crazy. Delete it!!” one said.
“Black face ain’t cute, delete,” another agreed.
“This is so stupid,” one added.
The social media star responded to the heat by posting a photo wearing the dark make-up, captioning it: “I am not racist. I hate racism. What I’ve done is only to show what I am capable of … I love you all.
“Life is meant for living … living with love and passion for every one without thinking of what they are could really change your life … Think 2020 and live with passion for all peoples. Happy New Year.”
Ghadeer has refused to take the post down and continued to defend herself by sharing a video of a BBC News report on the controversy.
The initial clip appears to be inspired by the celebrity charity video made to raise money for the victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010.
The song is a cover of We Are the World written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985.

T.I.’s daughter, Deyjah Harris, unfollows him after ‘hymen check’ outrage
T.I. has lost at least one Instagram follower in the wake of his “hymen check” kerfuffle: his daughter.
Deyjah Harris has unfollowed her dad on Instagram, reports E! News, following comments about annual gynecologist appointments to “check her hymen.” The so-called virginity test has been both debunked and denounced by medical professionals.
Harris, 18, has yet to publicly address the rapper’s shocking interview — although she did “like” several tweets which referred to T.I. as “possessive” and “controlling” after the “Ladies Like Us” podcast aired.
It’s unclear exactly when she unfollowed the 39-year-old rapper, but Harris is also no longer following T.I.’s wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, or her stepsister Zonnique Pullins, as pointed out by Hollywood Unlocked.
During the podcast episode, which has since been deleted, the “Whatever You Like” rapper boasted that he knows his daughter is still a virgin because her hymen is still “intact.”
“We have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen,” he said. “As of her 18th birthday, her hymen is still intact.”
The backlash from both fans and celebrities was swift, with many calling the rapper out for the outdated practice, which the World Health Organization has called “a violation of the human rights of girls and women” and “has no scientific validity.” WHO also said the so-called “two-finger” test can be “detrimental to women’s and girls’ physical, psychological and social well-being.”
While T.I. has yet to address his comments, “Ladies Like Us” hosts Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham have since apologized for laughing at his “uncomfortable” remarks and removed the podcast episode.

Instagram assures users horizontal feed change was just a test
Instagram head Adam Mosseri took to Twitter Thursday to reassure users alarmed by an unannounced change in the apps’ interface that the shift from a vertical scroll to a horizontal swipe was just a test that accidentally rolled out widely.
Why it matters: There have been reports that Instagram has been testing the new design for months, presumably to foster deeper user engagement with content and less “mindless scrolling” between posts.Show less
What they’re saying: “This was supposed to be a very small test but we went broader than we anticipated…Should already be rolled back,” Mosseri said on Twitter.
The big picture: Mindless scrolling between posts was a big problem for Instagram’s parent company Facebook, and was something executives told investors repeatedly that they wanted to fix.
- To do so, Facebook changed the type of content it would algorithmically surface in the feed to include fewer posts from brands and media companies, and more from friends and family.
- Instagram seems to be trying a different approach: Swiping requires a more deliberate thumb gesture than scrolling.
Between the lines: Some users complained about the adjustment on social media, arguing that it made the functionality difficult to understand and that the “swipe” function between posts was not preferable to scrolling.
Yes, but: Users frequently complain about app redesigns at first before they adjust to changes. There was an uproar in 2015 when Instagram updated the app so that posts were no longer chronological, but rather algorithmically surfaced in the feed.
Be smart: With most redesigns, users do eventually come around. But we’ve seen with Snapchat’s redesign earlier this year how that effort can go very wrong, and alienate users who feel that the changes go too far.

Instagram model destroys eyes in cosmetic surgery gone wrong – changing eye color from brown to light grey
Nadinne Bruna, a 32-year-old Instagram model who has more than a million followers, has the eyesight of a 90-year-old after undergoing a controversial procedure: She had silicone implanted in her peepers to change her eye color from brown to light gray.
“Before this surgery, my eyes were completely healthy,” Bruna, who’s based in Miami, tells South West News Service. “My pupils, they can’t adjust to light anymore, so I’m very photosensitive now too. This surgery completely f–ked up my life.”
Retinal implants are illegal to perform in the United States and not approved by the FDA. Ophthalmologists say that they can cause irreparable damage.
“The implants interfere with normal fluid leaving the eyes, which causes scarring, increases pressure and damages the nerves permanently,” Dr. Richard Rose, retina surgeon at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, tells The Post. And he’s heard of Americans going to Central and South America to have the procedure. “There are definitely some patients I’ve seen that do OK with them, but I’ve also seen some real disasters.”
It was a risk that Bruna was willing to take. In September 2016, she flew to Bogota, Colombia, to have the procedure, where she was charged a discounted rate of $3,000 in exchange for posting her results on Instagram.
But the procedure damaged her optic nerves, and she ended up with glaucoma, an incurable eye condition that can gradually cause blindness. On top of that, her eyes were constantly red and itchy for a year, and she had to stop booking modeling jobs because of her condition.
“I make most of my money through my Instagram account and I couldn’t do photo shoots,” she says. “I’ve been living on my savings.”
She had the implants removed in Miami in September, but the damage was already done.
“Nadinne’s eye problems are something she will have to deal with for the rest of her life. She’s never going to be done with it,” ophthalmologist Dr. Ranya Habash, who performed the implant-removal surgery on Bruna at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, tells the Daily Mail.
Dr. Eugenio Cabrera, the Colombian doctor who performed the surgery, did not comment on the procedure.
If you want to switch up your eye color without destroying your vision, Rose suggests colored contact lenses.
“They’re safe, approved and you can take them out,” Rose says.
Ultimately, the surgical nightmare was a learning moment for Bruna.
“I was completely stupid. I trusted the wrong person,” she says. “I don’t think surgeries are bad. I just didn’t know the risks and I made a mistake by not doing my research.”

Teen’s plastic surgery to look like Angelina Jolie goes very wrong
An Iranian woman has gone viral after claiming she’s had 50 surgeries in a bid to look like her idol Angelina Jolie.
Sahar Tabar claims to be one of the “Tomb Raider” actress’ biggest fans and has said she “would do anything” to emulate her.
The 19-year-old from Tehran underwent 50 surgeries in the space of just a few months, according to Al Arabiya.
This hasn’t been officially confirmed, however, so it’s possible her unique looks are the result of careful makeup or even prosthetics.
She also reportedly went on a diet to maintain her 90-pound weight, which would, in all likelihood, classify her as dangerously underweight.
Tabar has amassed more than 308,000 followers on Instagram although many have left unflattering comments on her pictures. One person simply posted “Zombie” on a recent shot while another said: “Her: Doc make me look like an 8-month-old corpse. Doc: Say no more.”
