Gabrielle Union Demanded A Prenup from Dwayne Wade
Gabrielle Union — an actress best known for her roles in films such as Bring It On, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Bad Boys II — has been married to former NBA player Dwyane Wade for nearly six years. Though they have a marriage that is going seemingly well, the two have not been without their relationship struggles. They each had already been divorced by the time they married in 2014. And, for Union especially, there were some valuable lessons she took from her failed marriage that affected her decisions with concern to Wade.
Gabrielle Union’s first marriage was to Chris Howard
Wade wasn’t the first NBA player Union has been married to. Form 2001 to 2005 she was married to Chris Howard, in a union that many thought was doomed from the start.
The proposal alone was enough to give anyone pause. Howard was apparently snacking on a bucket of KFC chicken with one hand while waiting for Union at home with the ring in the other. The next day she discovered that he might be cheating but went ahead with the marriage anyway.
At the wedding, it was clear some of her friends weren’t happy about her decision. In Union’s memoir, We’re Going to Need More Wine, she wrote about how a friend she had asked to do a reading made his feelings known: “Dulé thought this marriage was a terrible mistake, so as he read from 1 Corinthians, he kept sighing dramatically, pausing to look at me like ‘Are you getting this?”
Gabrielle Union’s prenup with Dwyane Wade was her idea
Union hadn’t had a prenup with Howard, and even without the details of their divorce, it’s clear from her interviews she believes that was a big mistake.
During a 2014 interview with Arsenio Hall, just a few months before her marrying Wade, Hall asked if she’d always “chosen so perfectly.” The answer was no, and she gave several examples of poor choices she had made in the past.
When it came to her upcoming marriage to Wade she knew she wanted at least one big thing to be different.
“For this marriage… the biggest difference between this and the last marriage will be a prenup,” Union said. “At my insistence. When you have your own stuff, you don’t need to worry about anybody else’s stuff. So everyone should go into the relationship knowing I’m here for you and you’re here for me. And the reality is I’ve never seen Dwyane balance a checkbook. So… I gotta protect my stuff… That’s the wave of the future, protecting your stuff.”
She shared a similar sentiment in another interview: “I want to make it clear that I have in no way hitched my wagon to his star. I have my own wagon and star.”
Dwyane Wade had a messy divorce from his first wife
Though Union didn’t mention it in her comments about getting a prenup, it’s important to note that Wade’s divorce from his first wife Siohvaughn Funches was not at all amicable, and may have also played a part in Union’s decision. Funches and Wade were married in 2002 and divorced in 2007 but the legal battles lasted well into 2010.
Funches made claims that Wade had abused her and also said she was left without child support for their two children for long periods of time. She even unsuccessfully tried to sue Union at one point for, as she claimed, breaking up the marriage. Wade eventually got full custody of the children when all was said and done.
There is also the matter of Wade’s third child, who was conceived with another woman while he and Union were on a break in 2013. Details of this time in their relationship have just begun to come out thanks to his ESPN Documentary D. Wade: Life Unexpected, Dwyane. Wade says that telling Union about the child was one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do.
In 2018 Wade and Union had a child of their own together through a surrogate.

50 Cent slammed for joke about Dwyane Wade’s transgender daughter and R. Kelly
The Internet is not laughing after 50 Cent made a joke about Dwyane Wade‘s transgender daughter Zaya.
The “Power” producer shared a meme on Sunday that featured an image of Wade, 38, and R. Kelly during New York Fashion Week in 2016.
A talk bubble above R. Kelly reads, “Heard you had a daughter now,” while one above the former NBA star reads, “U touch her I’ll kill ya.”
“LOL NOW THIS SOME FUNNY S–T,” 50 Cent, 44, captioned the post.
R. Kelly, 53, has been accused of sexually abusing several minors. He also faces racketeering, sex-trafficking and bribery charges in Brooklyn federal court and other criminal charges in state courts in Chicago and Minneapolis.
Earlier this month, Wade confirmed his 12-year-old was transgender in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. The former Miami Heat player said Zaya told him and his wife, Gabrielle Union, that she was “ready to live my truth.”
Several of 50 Cent’s followers thought his joke was in poor taste.
One person commented, “Uhm besides the fact that Zaya was brave enough to identify herself, Dwayne also has a little baby girl! So this is wrong on all levels.”
However, there were also several people who commented with crying and laughing emojis.
Wade did not immediately return our request for comment.
Wade and Union, 47, have not yet responded to 50 Cent’s joke on social media.
The couple has been extremely supportive of Zaya’s transition. In a video Union shared, in which she introduced Zaya to the world, Wade asked his daughter, “Even when people are being mean, and even when people are getting hurt because they’re trying to be themselves?”
Zaya responded, “I know it can get tough, definitely, but I think you push through, and you be the best you.”

Terry Crews criticized over reaction to Gabrielle Union’s ‘AGT’ ouster
“America’s Got Talent” host Terry Crews is catching heat from supporters of Gabrielle Union who believe he hung her out to dry.
NBC has been accused of ousting Union as a judge, Variety reported, after she expressed concern over a “toxic culture” on the set of the popular competition series. Fellow celebs, including Ellen Pompeo and Debra Messing, have spoken up on Union’s behalf, resulting in the actress sending a public thank-you message to her supporters.
Crews, 51, took to Twitter to respond to Union’s appreciative post, simply writing “You’re the best, Gabrielle! You will be missed!”
The short statement didn’t sit well with some fans of the 47-year-old actress, who said Crews should have come to her defense more vehemently. Fans also noted that Union was one of very few public supporters of Crews when he accused Hollywood agent Adam Venit of groping him at a party in 2017.
“She was there for you but this is the best you could do. Not surprised,” wrote one follower, while another responded, “Oh Terry. This is all you’ve got? That’s a shame.”
“This is disappointing Terry,” added another fan of Union’s. “She stood up for you when you needed it and this is how you repay her?”
In its statement Sunday, SAG-AFTRA confirmed the union’s involvement in an investigation of the allegations against NBC.
“We take issues of workplace health and safety very seriously. We immediately reached out to Ms. Union’s representatives when these reports came to light. It is our practice to work closely with members who reach out to us and their representatives in instances like this, as that usually affords the best protection and best resolution for the affected member.”
According to Variety, Union “urged” producers to report a Korean joke allegedly made by guest star Jay Leno to human resources, but several insiders told the publication the incident didn’t make its way to HR. The line was cut from the episode.
Variety also reported that she received the note that her on-air hairstyles were “too black” while working on the show.

Gabrielle Union’s New Book: “I Have Had Eight or Nine Miscarriages
In two weeks, actress Gabrielle Union will release her first ever memoir, titled “We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True.”
Even though Union and Dwayne Wade are raising Wade’s two sons and his nephew, and another son that is not allowed in any family pictures, Union and Wade don’t have any biological children together.
Now Union opens up about her infertility issues. On Wednesday, PEOPLE magazine released an exclusive excerpt of the new memoir, where the actress details her infertility issues in several attempts to have a baby with NBA star husband, Dwyane Wade.
“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” the Union wrote. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant – I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”
Although the actress has opened up about IVF before, she declined to detail the struggles she has faced after three years of failed cycles. But, throughout the heartbreaking trauma, she revealed that she and her husband “remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we’ve both dreamed of.”
“For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’” she told PEOPLE, after revealing that she never wanted to have children until she became a stepmom to her husband’s three sons and nephew. “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”
We wish Union and Wade
