Diversity Coming to Disney Theme Parks?
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, recently said the theme parks will see more changes to show inclusion and diversity, according to Walt Disney World News Today.
- D’Amaro — who spoke at the IAAPA Expo Monday — said there would be “more to come” when it comes to inclusion products, WDWNT reports.
- He said that the first step would be fixing Splash Mountain to be more inclusive. The parks are now working on projects that will do the same in the near future.
Key quote:
- “This represents transformative cultural change,” D’Amaro said.
Context:
Back in June, Disney announced that Splash Mountain, which is based on the 1946 Disney film “Song of the South,” will be reworked to focus on characters from the 2009 film “The Princess and the Frog.”
- The decision to fix the rides came after controversy sprang up about the ride’s connections to “Song of the South,” which has been criticized for its portrayal of African Americans and reliance on racial stereotypes, as I reported for the Deseret News.
- Disney fans signed a petition to retheme the ride, which suggested that it rely on “The Princess and the Frog” instead. And that’s exactly what happened.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch, An All-New Animated Series, to Debut on Disney+ in 2021
Clone Force 99, from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, returns!
Today, Disney+ ordered its next animated series from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Fresh off of the critically-acclaimed series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Disney+ original series will premiere on the streaming service in 2021.
The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.
“Giving new and existing fans the final chapter of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been our honor at Disney+, and we are overjoyed by the global response to this landmark series,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president, Content, Disney+. “While The Clone Wars may have come to its conclusion, our partnership with the groundbreaking storytellers and artists at Lucasfilm Animation is only beginning. We are thrilled to bring Dave Filoni’s vision to life through the next adventures of the Bad Batch.”
Star Wars: The Bad Batch is executive produced by Dave Filoni (The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Athena Portillo (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Brad Rau (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance) and Jennifer Corbett (Star Wars Resistance, NCIS) with Carrie Beck (The Mandalorian, Star Wars Rebels) as co-executive producer and Josh Rimes as producer (Star Wars Resistance). Rau is also serving as supervising director with Corbett as head writer.

Disneyland reopening: Resort will require mandatory face coverings for cast members, guests
When the Disneyland Resort plans to reopen in July, there will be some new health and safety measures in place including mandatory face coverings and temperature checks for guests and cast members.
When Disneyland Resort plans to reopen in July, there will be some measures in place to ensure the health and safety of guests and cast members.
According to Disneyland’s website, these enhanced health and safety measures include:
- Mandatory face coverings for both cast members and guests
- The addition of hand-washing stations and physical barriers throughout the resort, where appropriate
- Reduced theme park capacity to ensure physical distancing
- Appropriate signs added to help guests move throughout the resort
- Temperature checks for guests prior to entering the theme parks, Downtown Disney District
- Daily health screenings and temperature checks for cast members
- Expansion of Mobile Order through the Disneyland app, Apple pay and more
- Enhanced cleaning and sanitation throughout the resort
The resort’s decision to make face coverings mandatory comes after Orange County announced it would no longer require the public to wear face masks.
“I want to be clear. This does not diminish the importance of face coverings. I stand with the public health experts and believe wearing cloth face coverings help to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and save lives,” said Dr. Clayton Chau, the interim health officer and recently appointed Health Care Agency director.
To promote physical distancing, the resort also announced that Disneyland and California Adventure Park will track attendance through a reservation system, that will require all guests to obtain an advanced reservation for park entry.
Additionally, new ticket sales and Annual Passport sales and renewals have been temporarily paused.
“We are purposefully taking baby steps during this very intentional phased approach,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “As one of the first major theme parks to close our operations and the last to reopen, we have been deliberate about keeping the health and safety of our cast, guests and local communities top of mind.”
Disneyland and California Adventure were temporarily shut down in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Disneyland resort announced a proposal to begin a phased reopening of the popular tourist destination in Anaheim on July 9, followed by a reopening of the location’s theme parks on July 17. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Paradise Pier Hotel plan to reopen on July 23, the news release said. The Downtown Disney district will begin reopening July 9.
The planned July reopenings are pending local and state government approvals, according to a statement on the Disney Park’s blog.
Shanghai Disneyland, Florida’s Disney Springs and several Disney stores have reopened in recent weeks. A proposed reopening of Walt Disney World in Orlando was announced last month for July 11 and Hong Kong Disneyland will reopen on June 18.

‘Mulan’: Why Captain Li Shang Isn’t in the Live-Action Remake
As Disney fans eagerly await the theatrical release of the live-action Mulan, some wonder how this version will hold up compared to the animated classic without its heartthrob Li Shang. When fans noticed Captain Li Shang’s name was absent from the casting notices for Mulan, an avalanche of displeasure made its way across social media, calling the decision “dishonor on you.”
General Li Shang was not only a key character in the animated film, but he stole our hearts with his good looks, sick martial arts skills, a catchy song, and status as a bisexual icon. His character helped drive the story forward, pushing not only Mulan but the rest of his troops to be their best and rise to a massive challenge. We also saw the devastation of war through his experience of losing his father.
Li Shang’s bond with Mulan’s male alter-ego Ping speaks volumes for the LGBTQ community, so why isn’t Li Shang in the movie? According to producer Jason Reed, we’ll actually still have Li Shang in the new Mulan—sort of.
“We split Li Shang into two characters. One became Commander Tung (Donnie Yen) who serves as her surrogate father and mentor in the course of the movie. The other is Honghui (Yoson An) who is [Mulan’s] equal in the squad.”
Reed cites #MeToo movement as an influence on their decision to rework the character.
“I think particularly in the time of the #MeToo movement, having a commanding officer that is also the sexual love interest was very uncomfortable and we didn’t think it was appropriate.”.
This decision removes the power differential, but how will Mulan and Honghui Chen’s dynamic play out? Reed and his team used the animated movie as the model for that level of relationship.
New Zealand actor Yoson An who plays Honghui describes his character as very still, honorable, and observant, and talks about his and Mulan’s initial dynamic.
“They start off on the wrong foot, really. As they progress through the training together, they kind of have this unspoken bond about it because they recognize each other’s warrior spirit. That’s how they kind of build their friendship up to begin with, through the training and acknowledging each other.”
While remaining tight-lipped on the LGBTQ aspect of his character, An talked about how he drew his inspiration for Honghui,
“I see this film as a different variation from the animated version and the original story of The Ballad of Mulan. I kind of took a different angle from Li Shang’s character. I can’t really say to a lot of how that will come across but there is a multi-dimensional layer to him and the audience will be able to see that when they watch the movie.“.
Li Shang will always have a special place in our hearts and we’ll see for ourselves how the dynamic between Mulan and Honghui plays out on March 27th when Mulan hits theaters. Tickets are on sale starting today.

Thousands Of Disney+ Accounts Are Up For Sale On Hacking Forums
Disney’s hotly-anticipated streaming service Disney+ finally launched this week. Despite being open to the public for just a few days, hackers have already hijacked thousands of accounts and put them up for sale on the Dark Web.
Reporting for ZDNet, Catalin Cimpanu discovered several listings for Disney+ accounts on different underground hacking forums. The going rate for a hacked account appears to be somewhere between $3 and $5.
That’s three to four times more than the asking price for a hacked Netflix account. Logical enough, given the excitement around the Disney+ launch.
So how is it possible that these accounts – many of which are just a few days old – have already been taken over by hackers? I haven’t seen any reports confirming the root cause, but it seems likely that bad habits are to blame.
One bad habit in particular: password re-use.
You should never, ever use the same password for multiple websites or online services. Security professionals have been repeating this refrain for years.
Their warnings often fall on deaf ears, unfortunately. To users creating yet another account, it can feel like too much trouble to come up with a unique password to protect it.
When you’re creating a new account – whether for a hot new service like Disney+ or any other – remind yourself that hackers are always lurking in the shadows and ready to attack.
They’re armed with billions of email addresses (likely including yours) and billions of previously-used passwords. Using automated brute-forcing tools they can quickly break into accounts en masse.
Recovering a compromised account can be tricky, too. Once a hacker has gained access they tend to move quickly. They revoke access to authorized devices and then change passwords to prevent users from logging back in. They’ll change the email address associated with an account, too, which stops users from using automated password reset tools to regain access.
If you’re getting ready to sign up for Disney+ – or any other service, for that matter – get yourself a password manager first. Use it to create a unique password and let it remember that password for you.
Otherwise you may find yourself fighting to regain access to your account before you even have a chance to enjoy what you’ve signed up for.
I’ve reached out to Disney for a comment on the situation will update this post with its response.

This ridiculous 3-hour trailer shows off every TV show and movie coming to Disney+
If there’s any streaming service that can legitimately compete with the juggernaut that is Netflix, it’s Disney+. Set to launch in just a few weeks, Disney+ will not only be extremely affordable at $7 a month, it will offer subscribers an absolute avalanche of media content. From beloved animation films of old to any Star Wars title you can think of, Disney+ will undoubtedly come out of the gate strong and will likely garner an impressive subscriber base in a relatively short period of time.
Earlier this week, the official Disney+ Twitter account started tweeting out a list of all the movies and TV shows set to arrive on the streaming service in early November. And seeing as how Disney has been making movies since 1937, some of the titles Disney highlighted were so incredibly bizarre that it left many people wondering if Disney was trying to troll us. You’d be forgiven, after all, for thinking that titles like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and The Barefoot Executive were completely made up.
Not to fear, all of the titles Disney tweeted out over the past few days are very much real.
If anything, some of the titles and their accompanying trailers are so absurd that it almost makes Disney+ that much more appealing as a streaming service, if only to watch and laugh at how bad some of these old movies are. All that said, Disney a few days ago published a comprehensive video on YouTube which highlights a large percentage of the titles coming to Disney+:
Now, I can’t imagine anyone is actually going to sit down and watch the full 3-hour trailer, so to save you some time, here are a few trailers highlighting a few of the more obscure movies — including one about a horse that plays football — set to land on Disney+ when it launches on November 12.

The Lion King Movie Review
After months of advertisements and trailers, the live action adaptation of the Lion King is finally here! What do I have to say about it? Well I got one enjoyed it, and here’s why!
Let me just start off by saying that no it’s obviously not better than the original, however the movie itself is still great. Seeing the opening in live action was absolutely breathtaking. Yes; all the scenery in the movie is gorgeous. Pride rock looked spot on, the lions looked amazing, they definitely went all out af far as visual effects.
Now let’s get onto the voice acting. The voice acting to me was mostly good, MOSTLY. There were some line to me that did fall a little flat. James Earl Jones as always is still great as Mufasa, Donald Glover killed it as Simba, Scar was great. and Beyoncé wasn’t too cringy as Nala. The stand outs were Timon and Pumba since they got mostly new dialogue.
All in all when not comparing it to the original it’s a really great film. I for one plan on seeing it again, Lion King was a big part of my childhood and I still consider it a big part of my life today. On a scale of 1-10 I give it an 8! If you haven’t seen Lion King; go see it this weekend!
Aly and AJ – Church
My childhood is all rushing back to me. Raven came back with kids, Miley Cyrus threw that blonde wig on again, and the Jonas Brothers are back together making music! Now Aly and Aj are making music together again. Is it me or were these two giving me Clermont twins vibes?
