Demi Lovato on cutting ties with her exes, including Wilmer Valderrama and Joe Jonas: I realized it ‘wasn’t healthy’
Demi Lovato is elaborating on her decision to narrow her inner circle.
The singer and actress recently revealed that she no longer speaks to Selena Gomez or exes Joe Jonas and Wilmer Valderrama — and her change in management team has been well documented. She says that trimming her circle was part of an effort to “set boundaries” as part of treatment for her 2018 near-fatal overdose. Since then she’s cut out ‘toxic people” from her life.
“I’ve had to cut a lot of toxic people out of my life over the last year,” Lovato admitted on Jameela Jamil’s I Weigh podcast. “I kind of used to have this mentality that if I had a negative experience with someone I always needed to mend it or I always needed to make things right.”
She continued, “The fact of the matter is, I’m not really friends with any of my exes today because I had to realize that that wasn’t healthy either. Trying to maintain close friendships with some of my exes just isn’t realistic. There’s actually a reason why people don’t do that.”
Lovato said, “For so long people would be like, ‘How are you still friends with your exes?’ I’d be like, ‘I don’t know! I just am.’ That was because I was afraid of fully letting go of people. Now that I’ve been able to fully let go of people, that is another thing I had to learn when it comes to cutting toxic people out of your life. If they’re an ex, it’s for a reason.”
She called “learning to set boundaries” the “steepest learning curve” she’s had. “I had to learn that by not setting boundaries, it put me in the position that I was in. Talking about every detail of every part of my life [in the press], whether it be a relationship or whether it be my recovery, nothing was sacred to me anymore.”
Lovato, who is now dating The Young and the Restless star Max Ehrich, depicted the Jonas Brothers — including ex Joe — as well as the newly engaged Valderrama in her music video for anthem “I Love Me” about moving forward. She seemed to have cordial relationships with both Joe and especially Valderrama, whom she split from in 2016 after six years together. Joe publicly wished her well after her overdose, but Valderrama visited her in the hospital and rehab as she recovered.
Lovato spoke about not being friends with Gomez, the Jonas Brothers and Valderrama in the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The comments about Gomez specifically — whom she said she loved but was no longer friends with — led to a call on social media for Lovato to be “canceled” with the hashtag “DemiLovatoIsOverParty.”
“I’ve been canceled so many times, I can’t even count,” Lovato told Jamil. “It just doesn’t even affect me anymore.”
She went on to ask, “Where is the forgiveness culture? I do, to a certain degree — there are some people, if you have used up your second and third chances … you should stay canceled. But if you mess up and you apologize and come forward and say I’ve learned from this, then let that be an example for other people so they can change too.”
She added, “Cancel culture will not work unless people have some sort of mercy. You have to be able to do that. I think if it’s somebody who refuses to learn, just has the entitlement of I can never do any wrong and I can get away with this, then yeah go ahead and cancel them.”
Lovato talked about quarantine — how she’s with family, including her mother, Dianna De La Garza, who has been obsessively cleaning the house to pass the time. She compared social isolation to a “luxurious” form of rehab — the luxury being she has a TV and phone, two things she wasn’t allowed in treatment, where her movements were also restricted.
As for her July 2018 overdose, Lovato said on the podcast that she is “still healing.” She said her “body survived something insane — a near-death experience” during the ordeal.

Demi Lovato on Her ‘Overworked’ Disney Days
Demi Lovato’s Disney days are part of her history and fans often want to know more about how that experience shaped her career and, of course, if she’s still close with her fellow Disney stars from back in the day. She revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she’s not friends with all of them anymore and opened up about how “overworked” she was at the time.
Lovato is ‘grateful’ for the time but it wasn’t easy
Lovato became a household name when she starred in the Disney original movie Camp Rock and the show Sonny With a Chance. She’s grateful for that opportunity but there were a lot of the pitfalls of fame that came with it.
In the May 2020 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Lovato addressed how being overworked played a role in her mental health, as she developed an eating disorder, experimented with drugs and alcohol, and entered rehab when she was 18.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities that I got,” Lovato acknowledged about that time. “Do I wish that I’d had more downtime? Yes. I think when you are a teenager and you’re given your big break, you’ll do anything to make it happen.”
The singer added, “I do feel that a lot of the way some of my life was handled and lived led to me kind of having a bit of a downfall, just because I was so overworked and I wasn’t dedicating enough time to my mental health or my personal life.”
She’s not still friends with all of her Disney-era pals
Lovato bonded with some of her fellow Disney Channel co-stars when she was a teen, but she’s not friends with all of them anymore. When asked about whether she and the Jonas Brothers are still in touch, “she shakes her head no,” the interviewer writes.
Her on-again/off-again relationship with Selena Gomez, who was her BFF back in the day is also over. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them,” she said of Gomez. “But I’m not friends with her, so it [Gomez praising Lovato’s Grammys performance] felt…” Lovato didn’t finish the thought, but added, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
She’s friends with Miley Cyrus
Lovato and Miley Cyrus, however, remain friends. “I talk to Miley. She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have. But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”
The two addressed their friendship during a March Instagram Live for Cyrus’ show Bright Minded: Live With Miley.
“Life is moving so fast that it’s usually hard to slow ourselves down and appreciate people in our lives, and you’ve been that person for me for so many years and we’ve been friends for so long,” Cyrus said at the time.
“I feel like you’ve always been such a light and that’s why we connected at 14. We connected then because we just saw something in each other. Maybe it was because of spirituality or maybe it was just our hearts,” she added.

Demi Lovato talks about coming out to her parents: ‘I was shaking’
Demi Lovato is opening up about her sexuality.
In a new interview on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, the “Anyone” singer spoke about being sexually fluid, which she came out as in 2018, noting, ““I’m very fluid. I think love is love. You can find it in any gender. I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want.”
In the radio interview, she recalled telling her parents — mom Dianna De La Garza and stepdad Eddie De La Garza — for the first time. She also spoke about her desire to have children, with a partner or on her own, in the next decade.
“I’m still figuring it out,” Lovato said of her sexuality. “I didn’t officially tell my parents that I saw myself ending up possibly with a woman, too, until 2017,” which is one year after she ended her six-year romance with Wilmer Valderrama.
She said that conversation was “emotional but really beautiful.” She said after she got it out, “I was shaking and crying and I just felt overwhelmed. But I have such incredible parents. They were so supportive. My dad was like: ‘Yeah, obviously,’” and pointed to Lovato’s song “Cool for the Summer,” in which she sang about hooking up with a woman.
Lovato went on to say that her mom was “the one that I was super nervous about, but she was just like, ‘I just want you to be happy. And that was so beautiful and amazing, and like I said — so grateful.”
As far as having children of her own, she said, “I don’t know what my future looks like. I don’t know if I’m going to have kids this year or in 10 years. I don’t know if I’m going to do it with a partner or without. Cause women, we don’t need partners [to raise kids]. Amen.”
Fresh off her stunning Grammy Awards performance, Lovato will be singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday. But she almost didn’t return to music after her near-fatal overdose in 2018, she revealed during the interview.
“I think as time goes on, I’ll be able to give more information or more details,” she said referring to her overdose. But not performing again — or being able to perform again “was a general thought. We didn’t know what was going to happen. We didn’t know how healthy I’d be when I left, it was a scary time in my life for sure.”
Since Lovato left rehab the fall of 2018, she’s had two public romances — with Austin Wilson and Henry Levy. Just prior to rehab, she posted a social media photo touching tongues with her longtime backup dancer Dani Vitale, but quickly deleted them. Fans long speculated about the relationship between the women, who are no longer friends amid fallout over Lovato’s overdose.

Wendy Williams Worried Demi Lovato’s Reported Romance With Her Sober Coach Could Cause Her To Relapse
The talk show host made it very clear that in her opinion, Demi Lovato’s reported new relationship might cause her to relapse all over again. As you may know, rumor has it that the singer is dating Henry Levy as they were caught sharing a kiss while in Malibu only a few days ago.
On her show, Wendy Williams discussed with her studio audience how the supposed romance may affect Demi and it’s not at all in a good way.
Following her drug overdose that almost took her life, Demi should be very careful how she deals with her addiction from now on, and that also involves the people that might trigger a relapse.
Wendy is worried that her sober companion, Henry Levy is not good for Demi.
On her talk show, Wendy told her audience that ‘There should be a law. If you are counseling, coaching, treating someone, there needs to be a law that says you cannot do that because this is not right! Now, she is back in the studio and if one of them relapses, the other will as well, and what do you think the chances of a 25 year old, and 26 year old relapsing in Hollywood is?’
Williams went on to offer the singer some advice, saying: ‘Listen, Demi … stay inside, write your music, emotional songs, then record for the spring, and maybe by summer, you will have that big summer jam. But, you need to take care of yourself, and being with someone like you is definitely not helping!’

Demi Lovato Removes All Her Makeup In Video
For those not in the know, Demi Lovato is a singer, songwriter and actress, known being a prominent champion of positive body image, who also speaks openly and honestly about her own struggles with an eating disorder and mental health.
Adding to her journey of self-acceptance and refreshingly human and positive messages to her fans, Demi has made a video called “Demi Lovato, Unfiltered: A Pop Star Removes Her Makeup,” for Vogue as part of their American Women: Transformers series. Turning the traditional makeover on its head, Demi instead gets a makeunder, as she slowly strips away her makeup to reveal the beauty underneath.
“I think society tells us we need makeovers, but why can’t we embrace the beauty that we naturally have?” She told Vogue. However, that’s not to say that she doesn’t enjoy the glamor which comes as part of her job. “I love makeup. I love doing my hair; I have extensions, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and natural beauty needs to be celebrated.”
You could argue that for a young, beautiful millionaire, going natch and looking great with it comes quite a bit easier than it does for the average woman. Some commenters certainly didn’t buy it. For others however, she remains one of the few celebrities that people can really relate to as they follow her ups and downs on social media, where she strips bare her insecurities and urges her fans to embrace themselves as they are.
