A church needed money, so members held homeless people captive and forced them to beg, prosecutors say

News & Info

Twelve leaders of a California-based church were charged with luring in dozens of mostly homeless people, locking them in group homes and forcing them to panhandle up to nine hours a day, six days a week, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Twelve defendants, including former pastor of Imperial Valley Ministries Victor Gonzalez, were charged with conspiracy, forced labor, document servitude and benefits fraud, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday.

The nondenominational church, which has been around since the 1970s, is headquartered in El Centro, California,  and has approximately 30 affiliate churches throughout the USA and Mexico. The programs were meant to “restore” people struggling with drug addiction in faith-based rehabilitation group homes. Participants were enticed with offers of free food, shelter and the resources to eventually return home.

The alleged criminal activity began in 2013 around the time that Gonzalez became pastor, according to the indictment. Gonzalez allegedly told members that the church needed money and instructed them not to let participants leave.

Prosecutors said church members locked victims inside group homes with deadbolts and kept them hostage by taking their identification documents such as driver’s licenses, passports, immigration papers, money and personal items. At some homes, the windows were nailed shut.

“The indictment alleges an appalling abuse of power by church officials who preyed on vulnerable homeless people with promises of a warm bed and meals,” U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said in a statement. “These victims were held captive, stripped of their humble financial means, their identification, their freedom and their dignity.”

Church leaders allegedly stole their food stamp and welfare benefits and coerced them into panhandling, the proceeds from which all going back to the church. In some cases, church officials allegedly told victims that their children would be taken away if they left or that their loved ones had rejected them and only God loved them.

The indictment alleges church leaders required their victims to follow a strict set of rules, prohibited them from going unaccompanied, reading books other than the Bible or discussing “things of the world.” If the rules were broken, the indictment says, there would be “discipline,” which allegedly included  withholding of food.

Two people got out: a woman with diabetes who was allegedly refused medicine for her low blood sugar and a 17-year-old who broke a window and called the police from a neighboring property.

Officials said all known victims have been freed. The charges of forced labor, document servitude and violating the Food Stamp Act have a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

“This is the most significant labor trafficking prosecution in this district in many years,” Brewer said. “These cases are few and far between because many victims live in captivity and fear, powerless to report the crimes against them. My office wants victims to know that we are here to help you.”

UNDERCOVER AGENTS FIND REGISTERED CHURCH TO BE SEX CLUB

News & Info
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) —

Undercover inspectors have determined that a building registered as a church was being operated as a sex club.

WTVF-TV reports that the city of Nashville has filed a complaint against the owners for “maintaining a public nuisance by permitting acts of lewd conduct” and violating a state law banning sex clubs from operating within 1,000 feet of a school.

The longtime downtown swingers club underwent a conversion in 2015 when it relocated to a run-down office park in the community of Madison, calling itself a church because the new location is near the back of the private Goodpasture Christian School.

Two codes inspectors paid $40 to enter the facility in March and filed affidavits detailing sex acts they witnessed within.

The city is seeking to close the club.

Kentucky Man Stabbed Father in Church After He Was ‘Moved by the Message’

News & Info

A Kentucky man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to stabbing his father during a church service last year, PEOPLE confirms.

Ethan Buckley, 21, reportedly told officials he was “moved by the message” before stabbing his father in the neck. He was charged with first-degree assault.

On August 14, Buckley was arrested after a church pastor told police he was standing at the altar and heard a “weird noise,” according to the Bowling Green Daily News.

According to the paper, the pastor heard Buckley’s father say, “Don’t let him kill me, don’t let him kill me.”

Another pastor heard the disturbance and jumped over chairs to get Buckley off his father. Buckley’s father was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.

In an affidavit for a search warrant, Bowling Green Police Department detective Mike Nade wrote, “Ethan Buckley stated his father’s time here on earth was up because he had done a lot of good things in life.”

Nade continued, “Ethan Buckley stated he resented his father because his father was such a good guy while he was a screw-up and a drug addict.”

Chris Cohron, commonwealth’s attorney for the eighth judicial circuit, would not comment on the details of the case.

Cohron said Buckley must serve at least 8 years before being considered for any type of release, according to reports. Since he pleaded with mental illness, his sentence allows him to have mental health resources available to him.

Buckley’s attorney James Rhorer did not return a call to his office.

Positive News: North Carolina Pastor Prays For A Man With Gun In His Church

News & Info, Religious

It’s always heart warming to hear stories about things like this. In North Carolina a pastor definitely put his faith to the test after a man carrying an assault rifle, walked into his church. The incident occurred at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday, New Year’s Eve, at Heal the Land Outreach Ministries in Fayetteville.

The man told the crowd that the Lord had told him he needed to go to the church before he did something bad. The armed man and Pastor Larry Wright met near the front of the church.”Can I help you?” the pastor asked.”His next words were, ‘can you pray for me?'” Wright told the TV station. The man remained calm as Wright took the gun away and had deacons embrace him. Wright prayed, and the man fell to his knees and cried.

The man was invited to sit on the front row, and he asked to get saved before police arrived to take him to a mental health facility. He later returned to the church to thank Wright for helping him, stating that he was facing financial struggles and his wife was sick. He plans to get baptized this Sunday at the same church.

It’s very touching to hear stories like this. As a firm believer in God it felt good to hear that this man not only didn’t hurt anybody but also chose to get saved and baptized in that same church. I hope to hear similar stories like this in the future.

Priest Accused Of Embezzling $1 Million Dollars In Gay Sex Exploits

News & Info

It looks like nutty New York is back in the news but this time it takes place inside the church! Recently a Bronx Priest named Peter Miqueli has been accused of embezzling over $1,000,000 in gay and drug fueled sexcapades.

An investigation is underway by the Archdiocese of New York, after there were allegations of him being involved in S&M with a male escort along with a lawsuit filed by his former parishioners. As of December 12th Miqueli has resigned  from the church after the New York Post published pieces of the letter to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, detailing his $1000 sex romps with Keith Crist.

The leter gives some explicit details of Miqueli’s romps with Crist as stated by Crist’s ex-girlfriend Tatyana Gudin. Not only that but earlier last week the Bronx church and Miqueli’s former church St. Francis Xavier Cabrini filed a lawsuit against Miqueli and Dolan, accusing them of siphoning cash collected from the parish thrift shop, which was used to fund to fix the churches pipe organ. They accused Dolan of turning a blind eye to it.

Gudin says Miqueli used the money to participate in sex acts involving a dog collar and a chastity belt at his Harlem apartment and home in New Jersey. His home’s backyard had a hot tub and inside there was a “dungeon,”. “There was equipment at the house — dildos, whips, chains and chaps. Keith used it. The priest also used it,” she told the NY Post.

Neighbors reached by the New York Daily News were said to have seen a steady flow of male visitors coming in and out of the home. It wasn’t just sex that happened at the house either.” They would party. There would be needles and syringes all over the house,” Gudin told the NY Post. Approximately $60,000 of the stolen funds went toward their drugs, illicit and prescription, she claims.

Since then there has been a Facebook page and an online petition to remove Miqueli from the church with 200 signatures signed.

This is sickening and this is also why a lot of people stray away form the church. As a priest he should be living by example but seeing is how he’s been participating in activities such as this and stealing money from it makes the church look just as bad and makes it seem like the entire church covered this mess up. Hopefully they don’t let this man back in that church.
