Kelis says seeing photos of Rihanna after Chris Brown assault led her to leave ‘abusive’ partner
Kelis has said she felt compelled to leave her allegedly abusive ex-husband after seeing the photographs of Rihanna following Chris Brown’s assault.
In 2018, the “Milkshake” singer accused her former partner, hip-hop artist Nas, of physical and mental abuse, nine years after she had left him while seven months pregnant with their child.
Nas has strongly denied any accusations of abuse.
Speaking about their marriage to The Guardian, Kelis explained that the photographs of Rihanna (Brown received five years probation and a community service order for the assault) led her to leave Nas.
“It just woke me up,” she said, adding that the pregnancy also encouraged her to leave. “I can endure a lot, but I’m not prepared to bring someone else into this. So I’m done.”
Kelis went on to say that “red flags” were there from the beginning of her relationship with Nas, which started when the singer was in her early 20s.
“I was really young and didn’t know that love isn’t enough,” she said.
“It was crazy from the start, but I think as girls we’re taught that that’s what love is, like you can’t breathe without them. What kind of s*** is that? I want to breathe!”
The singer went on to discuss the difficulties of co-parenting their 10-year-old son, Knight.
“Any rational person would look at this situation and say [to Nas]: ‘Well, if you want to see [your child], you have to actually show up!’,” she said.
“My kid is a really happy child, because I don’t tell him when [his father] says he’s going to come and doesn’t show up.”
Kelis first opened up about her relationship with Nas in the wake of the #MeToo movement.
In the video interview with Hollywood Unlocked, the singer described the relationship as “tumultuous and toxic”.
The Independent has contacted representatives for Nas for comment.

Jamie Foxx Thanks Chris Brown For Showing Love To His Sister With Down Syndrome
Chris Brown shared a special moment with Jamie Foxx’s younger sister, who has Down Syndrome while celebrating his latest number one album Indigo.
Foxx’s sister, 33-year-old DeOndra Dixon, was seen in a video posted to his Instagram Tuesday morning telling Chris Breezy “I love you.” Brown then leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. It looks as though Foxx, Chris Brown, and DeOndra were all in a studio session listening to Chris’s new project.
“Congratulations @chrisbrownofficial on your number 1 album INDIGO… #indigoseason,” the caption read on Jamie’s Instagram. “… you are beyond talented… and I salute uu… and thank u for the beautiful moments you share with my sister @deondradixon You lift her so high that the tears well up in her heart and mine… thank u #love #music when @chrisbrownofficial says “I love u” and @deondradixon says “I love uu back”…[cloud] 9.
Back in August, the comedian/actor/singer opened up about his sister’s condition in an interview with Dateline NBC. He said that DeOndra taught him how to live, and that helps to keep him grounded. DeOndra lives with the 50-year-old icon in LA.
This isn’t the first time the Grammy and Oscar winner was seen with Chris Brown. In June Chris posted a photo of the two superstars together with the caption “ME AND BIG BRO COOKING,” leaving fans to guess that Jamie Foxx would make an appearance on Indigo. However as it turns out, Jamie Foxx did not have a feature on the album.
The two R&B singers have previously collaborated in the past. Chris Brown was featured on Jamie Foxx’s single “You Changed Me” in 2015 and Jamie hopping on “Text Message,” a single that Chris dropped in 2017.
And with this recent showing off how close Chris is with Jamie’s family, it’s clear the two have a special bond.

Chvrches increase security at gigs after receiving rape and death threats from Chris Brown and Tyga fans

“We have to have the police at our shows now. If that’s what I deserve for saying mainstream music should be more morally conscious, then so be it.”
Chvrches‘ singer Lauren Mayberry has revealed that the band now require a police presence at their shows after receiving rape and death threats from supporters of Chris Brown and Tyga.
Last week, the Scottish electro-pop trio said that they were “upset, confused and disappointed” at Marshmello’s decision to work with Chris Brown and Tyga – having worked with the EDM star themselves on recent single ‘Here With Me‘.
“We are really upset, confused and disappointed by Marshmello’s choice to work with Tyga and Chris Brown,” said the band on social media. “We like and respect Mello as a person but working with people who are predators and abusers enables, excuses and ultimately tacitly endorses that behavior. That is not something we can or will stand behind.”
Brown then fired back at the band, calling them a “bunch of losers” on Instagram.
“These are the type of people I wish walked in front of a speeding bus full of mental patients,” he wrote. “Keep grovelling over you own insecurities and hatred. IM BLACK AND PROUD. AND I KNOW ITS HURTS THAT U GUYS ARE STRUGGLING WIT LIFE OR PEACE SO U ARE FORCED TO SEE MY SUCCESS. You aren’t even #2 (REMEMBER 2nd place only means YOU LOST FIRST! TA-TA. GOODDAY PEASANTS.”
Having shared images of abusive messages that she has since received, Mayberry has now said that the band have had to increase security at their shows as a result of the threats.
“I am not staying in my own home when we finish tour because the threats we have received have reached such a scale,” wrote Mayberry on Twitter in response to a journalist. “We have to have the police at our shows now. If that’s what I deserve for saying mainstream music should be more morally conscious, then so be it.”
She continued: “And again, it is not you who is having to have police presence at shows and advance security in their actual own real life outside of a band persona.”
Mayberry has highlighted some of the shocking abuse that the band have received with screen grabs of messages:
In February 2009, Chris Brown was found guilty of felony assault after attacking Rihanna on their way to the Grammy Awards Ceremony. Earlier this year, he denied allegations of rape at a hotel in Paris, later filing a defamation suit against the accuser before many believed he was selling merchandise that appeared to mock the alleged victim.
Tyga was sued for sexual assault by a woman who appeared in his 2012 for ‘Make It Nasty’. Replying to the band’s original post, Tyga wrote: “Where [sic] all God’s children. Everyone makes mistakes no ones perfect. Let’s Keep the energy positive.”
