Remembering Selena 23 years after her death
Saturday marks 23 years since Tejano star Selena was killed.
She died just a couple weeks shy of her 24th birthday.
Since then, her star has only continued to rise with her memory being commemorated in an array of forms from a MAC makeup collection to rumors a new TV show inspired by the late singer is being developed.
Items bearing her image tend to sell out instantly, which speaks to the hold her influence still has on fans.
We’re celebrating her life with a look at five of the things we still love about Selena.
Her Talent:
Considered the Queen of Tejano, Selena started singing at a young age in her family’s band Selena Y Los Dinos.
Fast forward to 1989 when her self-titled album was released.
She captivated audiences with her vocal range and how she incorporated cumbia dance into her music.
But she also proved she could crossover with ease to any genre.
During what would become her final show before her death, Selena performed a disco medley at the Astrodome in 1995.
Her style:
Nicknamed the Mexican Madonna for her dazzling stage outfits, Selena designed her own costumes.
Who can forget that iconic purple jumpsuit she wore during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo?
From crop tops and boleros to bedazzled bralettes and belt buckles, the star also donned hand-beaded bustiers, including one worn at her 1994 Houston Astrodome Concert.
Selena opened two boutiques, one in Corpus Christi and another in San Antonio.
The stores, equipped with full-scale beauty salons, eventually closed.
Her legacy:
Selena continues to be recognized for her work.
On Nov. 3, 2017, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Los Angeles’ mayor also declared Nov.3 Selena Day.
Fans can explore Selena’s career anytime at the museum built by her family in Corpus Christi.
The Fiesta de la Flor music festival is also held in Corpus Christi.
Her love for her fans:
Fans love Selena, but she also loved them back and not just because they listened to her music.
According to her father Abraham Quintanilla, Selena loved kids and visited schools to tell them how important it was to have an education.
She even had a stay-in-school campaign in 1994.
Today, her family runs the Selena Foundation, which helps children with their education and contribute to their lives personally and professionally.
How her success broke barriers
Selena hit many achievements during her career, including winning the Grammy Award for best Mexican-American album for Live in 1994.
This was the first time a female Tejano artist won the category.
Her 1990 album Ven Conmigo was the first Tejano record to reach gold status, selling 500,000 copies.
Despite her success, Selena also had to overcome the challenge of breaking into the male-dominated industry of Tejano music.
In an interview on her official Twitter page, she said her father had a hard time securing gigs because “many male promoters didn’t think a female artist could attract huge crowds like men do, but…. wrong.”
Her English-language album Dreaming of You was released posthumously. It was a hit, and also inspired the Selena movie.

Aziz Ansari Accused of Sexual Misconduct
An anonymous woman recounted how the comedian attempted to pressure her into sex on a date
Aziz Ansari, the Parks and Recreation and Master of Nonestar who has built a career out of using comedy as a means to explore modern relationships, has been accused of sexual misconduct by an anonymous woman who says she went out on a date with him shortly after the 2017 Emmy Awards.
Twenty-three-year-old photographer “Grace” described the encounter to babe, saying she met Ansari while she was taking photos at the Emmy Awards after-party. The two bonded over Ansari’s camera and eventually exchanged phone numbers. According to the woman, Ansari invited her out on a date on Monday, September 25.
On the night in question, the two allegedly met at Ansari’s TriBeCa apartment and walked over to Grand Banks, an oyster bar aboard a schooner. Grace said that they left abruptly to go back to his apartment, where Ansari began to kiss her. She told babe that she was uncomfortable with how quickly the situation escalated. “It was really quick,” she said. “Everything was pretty much touched and done within ten minutes of hooking up, except for actual sex.”
Grace said she attempted to indicate her disinterest, but Ansari followed her around the apartment as though he was executing “a football play.” “It was 30 minutes of me getting up and moving and him following and sticking his fingers down my throat again,” she said. “It was really repetitive. It felt like a fucking game.” She said he then suggested they move to the couch, where he continued to attempt to initiate sex, though she wasn’t interested: “I know I was physically giving off cues that I wasn’t interested. I don’t think that was noticed at all, or if it was, it was ignored.”
She tried to verbally communicate her disinterest: “I said I don’t want to feel forced because then I’ll hate you, and I’d rather not hate you,” she said. Ansari appeared to understand at first, but soon continued his overtures. She said he only appeared to get the message when she emphatically said ‘no’ after he’d bent her over in front of a large mirror. He suggested they “just chill” on his couch.
Afterward, Ansari called her a car. Grace said she cried the whole trip home. She texted Ansari after the date, explaining how uncomfortable she’d felt: “Last night might’ve been fun for you, but it wasn’t for me. When we got back to your place, you ignored clear non-verbal cues; you kept going with advances. You had to have noticed I was uncomfortable.” She explained she was telling him this so that “maybe the next girl doesn‘t have to cry on the ride home.” Ansari reportedly responded, “Clearly, I misread things in the moment and I’m truly sorry.”
“I believe that I was taken advantage of by Aziz,” Grace told babe. “I was not listened to and ignored. It was by far the worst experience with a man I’ve ever had.”
Ansari has delved into the nature of sexual assault and harassment both during live sets and on his show, Master of None. During his 2015 Madison Square Garden special, he asked women in the crowd who had been followed home by “creepy dudes” to raise their hands. “What I’ve learned, as a guy, is to just ask women questions and listen to what they have to say,” he told the Daily Beast of the bit. “You’ll get blown away by the things they tell you. You’ll think, ‘What the fuck? This is way darker than anything I’d imagined.’”

Tyrese’s Child Abuse Case Has Been Dropped
We all watched Tyrese crying hysterically over the possibility of being separated from his daughter.
“Don’t take my baby, OK? I’ve been waiting on my baby for two months. I just wanna see my baby,” he was crying to a camera. He continued in agony, “What more do you want from me?!” (Was I the only one who felt as though his crying was… staged? Forced?)
Since then, the star’s wife, Samantha Lee, went on social media and suggested that people pray for the problems that her family is going through. I am sure there were some saints out there who did offer prayers. Thankfully, it looks like those prayers have worked. Tyrese’s abuse case has officially been dismissed.
“E! News can confirm the Department of Child and Family Services has closed its investigation into the actor after his ex-wife, Norma Gibson, claimed he beat their 10-year-old daughter, Shayla,” E! declared. “We’ve learned the LADCFS will not be pressing any criminal charges against the Fast and Furious star.”
We hope that this is the best situation for Shayla.
Hopefully, Tyrese will stop acting out, at least for all the world to see.

Cam Newton Disses ‘Female’ Reporter
*Le sigh*
The proverbial foot in mouth syndrome strikes again.
Cam Newton, a Carolina Panthers QB, was taking questions from the media when Jourdan Rodrigue asked how he felt about WR Devin Funchess being more physical when running his routes.
Newton laughed and then said, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”
Jourdan — who covers the Panthers for the Charlotte Observer — replied on Twitter, “I don’t think it’s ‘funny’ to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.”
When asked if anyone spoke with Cam after the incident she said, “I spoke with him after and it was worse.”
“I chose not to share, because I have an actual job to do today and one he will not keep me from.”

Gabrielle Union’s New Book: “I Have Had Eight or Nine Miscarriages
In two weeks, actress Gabrielle Union will release her first ever memoir, titled “We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True.”
Even though Union and Dwayne Wade are raising Wade’s two sons and his nephew, and another son that is not allowed in any family pictures, Union and Wade don’t have any biological children together.
Now Union opens up about her infertility issues. On Wednesday, PEOPLE magazine released an exclusive excerpt of the new memoir, where the actress details her infertility issues in several attempts to have a baby with NBA star husband, Dwyane Wade.
“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” the Union wrote. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant – I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”
Although the actress has opened up about IVF before, she declined to detail the struggles she has faced after three years of failed cycles. But, throughout the heartbreaking trauma, she revealed that she and her husband “remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we’ve both dreamed of.”
“For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’” she told PEOPLE, after revealing that she never wanted to have children until she became a stepmom to her husband’s three sons and nephew. “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”
We wish Union and Wade
