Bette Midler calls African American Trump supporters ‘blackground,’ is slammed as ‘racist’
Bette Midler is facing backlash after suggesting that President Donald Trump paid African American supporters to add “blackground” to his rally.
The outspoken Trump critic took to Twitter Wednesday to share a photo of a group of black men standing in the crowd behind Trump during one of his reelection rallies.
“Look, there are African American men in this shot! How much did he pay them to be ‘blackground’?” Midler, 73, tweeted to her 1.7 million followers.
Her remark was instantly slammed as “racist” and “really sick.”
“Wow, Bette! That’s some racist crap right there. I guess an old, white woman like yourself gets to decide what and how black people should believe and vote,” @staceybeast tweeted, while @Sammurica wrote: “People of different races are allowed to support whoever they want. Shocking, I know.”
User @derek_mafs added: “Wow this is a disgusting comment on so many levels? ‘blackground?’ Really? You are really sick, Bette.”
Midler hasn’t deleted the controversial tweet from her account, where she has since tweeted about former special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony.
She also replied to a user who posted a screengrab of her tweet and called her “#BigotBette,” writing, “Those who scream the loudest (and drop the most F-bombs)…”
Ignoring the swipe at her commentary, Midler responded to the mention of her cursing.
“As many as I feel like! Personally, I enjoy swearing. Why don’t you try it, you uptight…..ha!” she wrote.
Trump hasn’t addressed her tweet yet.
“Your wit and good nature really lifted my spirits; as a newly washed up psycho, I am very grateful for your thoughts and prayers,” she added.
Midler is a frequent and outspoken critic of Trump. The Oscar-nominated actress/singer caused waves on Nov. 14, 2018 when she went after first lady Melania Trump by sharing an image from the former model’s steamy shoot with British GQ in 2000.

Bette Midler apologizes after being slammed for calling women ‘the n-word of the world’
Actress and singer Bette Midler sparked social media backlash Thursday night after posting a racially insensitive tweet about feminism, in which she said “women are the n-word of the world,” and the “most disrespected creatures on earth.”
The actress was apparently quoting the title of the 1972 song written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which she referred to in a since-deleted post.
Social media was quick to call out Midler, who is white, and remind the actress of American history.
“Fact: Many white women-owned/abused slaves right along with their husbands. Ever seen a lynching picture? Guess what you don’t see: White women crying. Respect American History,” one Twitter user said.

Bette Midler Says Geraldo Rivera Has ‘Yet to Apologize’ for Allegedly Groping Her in the 1970s
Bette Midler says Geraldo Rivera has “yet to apologize” for allegedly groping her in the 1970s.
The 71-year-old singer spoke out about the veteran journalist on Twitter on Thursday after a video of a 1991 interview Midler did with Barbara Walters — where she first recounted the incident — resurfaced online.
It had gained traction because Rivera defended TODAY show anchor Matt Lauer, who was fired for alleged sexually inappropriate behavior.
“Tomorrow is my birthday. I feel like this video was a gift from the universe to me,” Midler wrote in a tweet that accompanied the video of her Walters interview. “Geraldo may have apologized for his tweets supporting Matt Lauer, but he has yet to apologize for this.”
She ended her message by using the popular “#MeToo” hashtag, used by victims of sexual harassment assault to express their own experiences.
In her interview with Walters, Midler recounted the alleged incident after Walters asked about Rivera’s claim that he and the stage star had a sexual encounter.
“Geraldo and his producer came to do an interview with me, in the ’70s, the early ’70s,” Midler said. “And this was when he was very, sort of, hot. And he and his producer left the crew in the other room, they pushed me into my bathroom, they broke two poppers and pushed them under my nose and proceeded to grope me.” (The word “poppers” is slang for the recreational drug alkyl nitrite.)
Walters cocked her head to the side and looked shocked as she asked, “Grope…?”
Midler nodded and said, “Groped me. I did not offer myself up on the altar of Geraldo Rivera. He was … he was unseemly.”
PEOPLE has reached out to Midler’s and Rivera’s representatives for comment but has yet to receive a response.
