Woman arrested after elderly dad found living with hundreds of rats
CALIFORNIA — A Southern California woman is in custody after deputies discovered her 96-year-old father and multiple pets living in a home stinking of feces and infested with up to 700 rats, authorities said Tuesday.
Catherine Ann Vandermaesen, 65, was arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor animal neglect, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. She was in custody and couldn’t be reached for comment.
Vandermaesen didn’t want to allow deputies inside the home during a welfare check last Wednesday in Ojai, a small city in a rural valley northwest of Los Angeles, the statement said.
A sheriff’s task force returned the next day and encountered multiple pets and urine and feces throughout the residence, authorities said.
The home was also filled with garbage, according to the release.
Eight dogs, two rabbits, a cat, a parrot and 55 pet rats were removed. Animal Control estimated the house was infested with another 200 to 700 rats.
Vandermaesen’s elderly father and her 74-year-old sister, whom deputies described as a “possible victim,” were taken by ambulance to a hospital. Their conditions were unknown.
County welfare authorities assumed custody of Vandermaesen’s father, who uses a wheelchair.
Officials also helped the sister get temporary housing services.
Vandermaesen had “willfully caused or permitted the health of her elderly father to suffer” by allowing him to live at the home, officials said.
The city declared the home “unlivable and a danger to the occupants and animals.”

Tiffany Haddish Reveals She Was Raped as a Teen by a Police Cadet

In the September issue of Glamour, the 38-year-old comedian opens up about a painful and life-changing sexual assault at the hands of a police cadet. Haddish was just 17-years-old at the time, she sayss.
“That whole experience put me in such a messed-up place for a long time, and I ended up going to counseling,” Haddish told writer Niela Orr.
Haddish told Orr that she reported the incident when it happened, but nothing came of it. She added that she wasn’t sure what justice would look like in that incident.
“Me just yelling out people’s names with no thought behind it is pointless. I need a plan,” Haddish said. “I could be a voice, but what’s a voice going to do—just keep talking? Or is there action behind it?”
Since the rape, Haddish says she’s developed a brashness towards men that functions as a sort of defense. She discloses how directors and producers have come on to her (“I might get real bossy and say, ‘First off, don’t nobody want to see your little dick!’ I get loud, all that,” she says). But she also uses sexual aggression to take control.
“I notice that men are afraid of women that are aggressive. So to protect myself I become semi-aggressive,” Haddish said. “You hear about, ‘Tiffany always hitting on somebody,’ but that’s to keep them from hitting on me.”
Haddish has spoken out about rampant sexual harassment in the entertainment industry before. In an interview with People magazine last year about her memoir, The Last Black Unicorn, Haddish said, “it seemed like everybody wanted to get in my panties. It was constant defending and battling. These men will try you every single time.”
“It’s like hazing,” she continued. “Once they figure out you’re strong and you don’t roll like that, then they start treating you like a colleague.”

Women’s March organizer accused of covering up sex abuse
Controversial Muslim activist and Women’s March organizer Linda Sarsour bullied an underling to cover up sex-abuse allegations in her Brooklyn office, a report said.
Asmi Fathelbab told blog The Daily Caller that a man repeatedly rubbed his crotch on her while she worked for the association under Sarsour in 2009.
But when Fathelbab reported the abuse, Sarsour — a self-proclaimed feminist and co-founder of the Women’s March organization — fat-shamed the woman and threatened to blacklist her from political jobs, the woman told the website.
“She oversaw an environment unsafe and abusive to women,” said Fathelbab. “Women who put [Sarsour] on a pedestal for women’s rights and empowerment deserve to know how she really treats us.”
The Daily Caller reportedly spoke on condition of anonymity with another association employee and a political operative that worked alongside the organization, and both corroborated Fathelbab’s account of the abuse and Sarsour’s intimidation.
Fathelbab took a contract gig with the association in 2009 and claims she was repeatedly accosted by a man who lived in the same Bay Ridge building as the group’s office.
“He would pin me against the wall and rub his crotch on me,” she told the Caller.
“It was disgusting… You have no idea what it was like to stand up and feel that behind you.”
But Sarsour called her a “liar” when Fathelbab reported it and told her “something like this didn’t happen to women who looked like me,” Fathelbab charged, clarifying on Twitter that the the rebuff was a dig at her weight.

In the first clip linked below at the :08 mark Jerhonda begins on how she was trained to sexually please a man, Jeannie seems to eagerly demand “Break that down” as she leans forward in her seat. At the :16 mark Loni suggestively asks: “how do they do it?” (referring to the sexual training), forgetting that this is a serious matter and not another opportunity for a sex joke.
In the third trailer linked below Jerhonda describes the moment she decided to escape. She lied to RKelly and managers and said that family was waiting on her, she left, and never looked back.

Mother burns son, 9, with iron for not showing her his school work, cops say
Pembroke Pines woman used a hot iron to burn the chest of her 9-year-old son because he failed to show her his school work, according to police.
Tamecha Jean, 32, was arrested Monday on suspicion of committing aggravated child abuse. Broward Judge Christopher Pole ordered Jean to be released on her own recognizance and to wear an ankle monitor as her case proceeds.
An anonymous tip to an abuse hotline brought Pembroke Pines investigators to Jean’s home in the 2300 block of Northwest 96th Terrace, police Capt. Al Xiques said.
Though the alleged child abuse happened in February, two scars on the boy’s chest were evidence of violence, as was the child’s statements to police, according to a report. There were no prior reports of child abuse at that address, Xiques said.
Jean is accused of placing the iron on the center of the boy’s chest and left nipple. A quarter-sized mark in the shape of the tip of an iron and a second, one-inch long scar that may have been from the edge of an iron was on the nipple, police said.
Jean told investigators that while using a belt to spank the boy, he may have burned himself because he moves around a lot while being spanked, the police report said.
The iron was in her hand but was unplugged when she began disciplining him, she told police. She said it may have burned him but she was not sure; she did not intend to burn him and he didn’t tell her he was burned, according to the police report.
“In this case, the mother intentionally and maliciously inflicted injury upon the child as a form of discipline,” Xiques said during a news conference Tuesday outside police headquarters on Pines Boulevard. “That’s just outrageous, to use a hot iron as a type of punishment. It seems more like a form of torture.”
Pembroke Pines police learned of the abuse tip Monday from the Broward Sheriff’s Child Protective Investigations Section, a contractor for the Florida Department of Children and Families, and acted upon it immediately, Xiques said.
Since Feb. 17, the case has been investigated by BSO and another law enforcement agency, according to DCF spokeswoman Paige Patterson-Hughes.
When it was determined Pembroke Pines police had jurisdiction, they became involved on Monday, she said.
“The child was safely placed elsewhere as the investigation began in February,” said Patterson-Hughes. “He was not left in an unsafe situation.”
Citing confidentiality, she said she was not allowed to say exactly when he was removed from the home.
“Investigators have to make a determination how the alleged abuse occurred, whether there was abuse, neglect or abandonment,” Patterson-Hughes said.
Jean is also the mother of a 2-year-old and a 16-year-old. After a shelter hearing Tuesday, the three children were placed in state-licensed foster care. Jean will be allowed to see the two children who were not injured during supervised visits, Patterson-Hughes said.
The police captain emphasized the need for people to report instances of violence toward children.
“Had not someone come forward we would have never known about it,” Xiques said. “Anyone with information regarding a child who may be victimized or has been victimized, please contact police.”

Michael Jackson’s Mother Accuses Nephew of Elder Abuse
The Jackson family matriarch is accusing her nephew of abusing her.
Katherine Jackson has been granted a temporary restraining order against her nephew, Trent Lamar Jackson, alleging ongoing elder abuse.
The younger Jackson has been employed as the driver for Mrs. Jackson, who is described as “the beloved, 86-year-old mother of nine children, her most famous son was the late Michael Jackson,” in court documents obtained by CNN.
Since the pop star’s death in 2009, Mrs. Jackson alleges, her nephew has “manipulated’ her and “preyed on her kindness.”
“Trent was supposed to be her driver, but over time has infiltrated Mrs. Jackson’s business and personal affairs, even referring to himself as her ‘House Manager,’” a statement included in the restraining order reads. “Trent has made it his business to regulate Mrs. Jackson’s interactions with her children — screening phone calls, not relaying messages, not allowing privacy during visits or phone calls.”
The document states that Trent Jackson “conned employees at Mrs. Jackson’s bank” to obtain access to her accounts.
Mr. Jackson has not responded to CNN’s request for comment.
It’s not the first time Katherine Jackson has been at the center of family drama.
In 2012, a missing-person report was filed — and her guardianship of Michael Jackson’s children, Prince, Paris and Blanket suspended — after she was out of touch with her family for 10 days.
She later said she had been secluded at an Arizona spa — unaware of the uproar surrounding her “disappearance.”
The order states that Mrs. Jackson has fired her nephew.
A hearing in the case has been set for March 1.
