Aaron Hernandez’s Fiancée Addresses Sexuality Rumors After Netflix Docuseries
Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, the fiancée of the late Aaron Hernandez, is speaking out about Netflix’s docuseries.
Less than a month after Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez was released, Shayanna sat down for her first interview and shared how she really felt about the project.
The docuseries examined the life of the former New England Patriots player, from his childhood and NFL career to his court cases and death. It also addressed rumors about Aaron’s sexuality.
When ABC News’ Amy Robach asked if there was anything in the series that, in her opinion, shouldn’t have been included, Shayanna noted the rumors about his sexuality.
“You can’t describe someone’s sexuality without them being here,” she stated during the interview—which aired on Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning America. “Although I’ve had a child with Aaron, I still can’t tell you how he was feeling inside. No one can.”
Amy also asked Shayanna if she’d like to comment on the rumors that Aaron may have been bisexual or gay.
“If he did feel that way or if he felt the urge, I wish that I was told,” she replied. “I wish that he would have told me because I would not have loved him any differently. I would have understood. It’s not shameful, and I don’t think anybody should feel shameful on who they are inside, regardless of who they love. I think it’s a beautiful thing. I wish I was able to tell him that.”
Aaron’s lawyer, Jose Baez, also participated in ABC News’ interview.
“I agreed to be part of the documentary based on a representation that certain people would be taken out that were discussing his sexuality,” he said. “After I was done interviewing, they went back on that promise. That’s the issue I have.”
He also said he didn’t understand why people felt a need to further explore Aaron’s death.
“I think they’re trying to find a simple answer for a complex situation,” he said. “His health was a huge factor. I mean, I don’t know understand why we need to search around for an answer as to why he committed suicide when he was at an advanced stage of a disease where the primary symptom is suicide.”
In 2015, Aaron was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Odin Lloyd. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. In 2017, he was found not guilty of murder in the deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu. Just days after the ruling, Aaron was found hanging in his cell and was pronounced dead. After his death, it was determined that he suffered from CTE.
When asked if she believed Aaron was innocent, Shayanna said she did.
“Yes, of course, I do,” she said. “I’d be a cold person to leave someone that had nobody at all.”
She also spoke about how she’d describe Aaron to his now 8-year-old daughter.
“I would describe her father as a loving individual who obviously loved her,” Shayanna said. “I think it’s more bringing back the memories for her and let her form her own opinion. I think that would be just enough to let her know.”
Shayanna claimed she was asked to participate in the docuseries but decided against it.
Netflix did not respond to ABC News’ request for comment.

Aaron Hernandez was sexually abused as young boy, report says
An investigative series by The Boston Globe revealed that former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who killed himself in prison last year, was sexually molested as a young boy.
The previously undisclosed information came from the Globe’s “Spotlight Team” from interviews, thousands of court and government records, and text messages, emails and images Hernandez sent and received while in a Massachusetts prison, where he was serving a life sentence without parole for the 2013 slaying of onetime friend Odin Lloyd.
The newspaper’s six-part series, the first installment of which was published Saturday, included details about Hernandez’s childhood, sexuality and drug use. Among them:
• Hernandez and his brother, Jonathan, were often beaten by their father, Dennis, while growing up in Bristol, Connecticut. The beatings were sometimes related to Dennis Hernandez’s drinking.
• Aaron Hernandez started smoking marijuana in high school with a teammate before school, before football practice and after games.
• The teammate, Dennis SanSoucie, told the Globe that he had a sexual relationship with Hernandez in junior high and high school and that the two tried to hide it.
• Jonathan Hernandez told the Globe that Aaron Hernandez disclosed later in his adult life that he had been molested as a young boy. One of Aaron’s lawyers in his criminal case also said Aaron spoke to him of sexual abuse as a child. Neither was willing to identify the perpetrator to the Globe.
• Aaron Hernandez was close to a cousin, Tanya Singleton, and he was crushed when he learned that his mother, Terri, was in a serious romantic relationship with Singleton’s husband, Jeff Cummings.
The report Saturday included information gleaned from recordings of nearly 300 phone calls Hernandez made from jail over a six-month period.
Hernandez was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell on April 19, 2017, just days after he was found not guilty of two counts of murder in the killing of two men in a drive-by shooting outside a Boston nightclub five years earlier.

Aaron Hernandez‘s fiancée at the time of his death, Shayanna Jenkins, is expecting a child 13 months after he hanged himself in prison.
The mother of one, who shares daughter Avielle Janelle with the late football player, announced her pregnancy on Instagram with a bump-revealing photo on Tuesday.
Jenkins also revealed the sex of her baby, writing she was expecting a second daughter, although she did not comment on the paternity of the child.
“Many of you have had speculated that I may be expecting another miracle which is very accurate, I wanted to take time and process and post when I was ready to. I wanted to have a moment for myself alone with my daughter … we are beyond excited about the new addition and chapter we will soon begin,” Jenkins, 28, wrote in the caption.
“I couldn’t be a luckier woman to have such a perfect little girl that’s prepared to become the best big sister, and even more blessed to welcome another babygirl [sic] to our home,” she continued.
“BabyG we are very excited to meet you !!! Mommy and sissy will continue to wait patiently for your arrival. I thank everyone for the continued support and appreciate the respect for our privacy that has been shown” she added.
Jenkins and Hernandez welcomed their daughter Avielle, 5, in 2012. In November of that year, the two also became engaged although they never married.
Hernandez, a former tight end for the New England Patriots, was arrested in 2013 for the murder of Odin Lloyd, a man dating Jenkin’s sister. As he awaited trial, he was charged with the fatal drive-by shootings of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado.

In May 2017, Jenkins appeared on the Dr. Phil show and said she did not believe the athlete killed himself, despite authorities’ determination otherwise.
“I don’t think this was a suicide,” she told Dr. Phil citing his acquittal and pending appeal on the Odin case. “That would make me doubt that he took his own life. He was very positive, so excited to come home.”
She added that Hernandez had spoken with their daughter after his acquittal and told her, “Daddy’s gonna be home.”
