Law and Order SVU Full Review: S20 E20 | The Good Girl (Spoilers)
Did you know that in some states it’s legal to marry a thirteen year old, with a parent’s consent?
The episode starts with a woman sitting pretzel style on her couch trying to meditate. But she’s disturbed by the fight between a father and her daughter.
The father won’t let his daughter have her phone (to text a boy?). The daughter goes ballistic, reminds him that he is her stepfather, and starts throwing knives and glasses. Hmm.
The meditating lady calls the police and the father and daughter try to play it cool, but daddy is bleeding and that teenager is looking a little crazy; they’re taken into the hospital.
When they’re at the hospital it is discovered that the 13 year old is *surprise* pregnant.
Of course the father is questioned about the paternity and he responds “Oh God! I know you have to ask but I would never”. In the interview he reveals that the mother passed a few years ago and that the biological father of the teen is a junkie in the wind.
Meanwhile, in the next room Rollins and Lieutenant Benson are questioning the teenager, Mackenzie. She reveals that she has been with an older man, an older man with a blue BMW. She clams up and won’t say anymore.
Carisi and Rollins visit St. Matthews school to investigate who the father is. They speak to two boys posed in a flirty Instagram picture with Mackenzie, the post referencing nudes.
The two boys reveal that Mackenzie is a flirt, constantly teasing by ‘grabbing their junks’.
The two detectives are led to the high-school drama teacher, Mr. Dryfus. He reveals he has a blue BMW and he is taken in for questioning.
Later on, Mackenzie’s father expresses that he has accepted the pregnancy, because it’s what his daughter wants. With all this Mackenzie still will not give details of her relationship.
Panning back to Rollins and Benson in the squad room, Rollins doesn’t like the idea of a court violating a child’s privacy by ordering a paternity test.
Rollins claims ” If one of the teen boys from that school is the father, why should the baby ruin his life too?”
Benson retorts “I didn’t know that babies ruined lives…”
“Did you let the father know before you…”
“Before I what?”
“Before you had the abortion?” Rollins said exasperated.
Benson sets the record straight and says she never said she had an abortion. “All I said was that regret can be a terrible thing to live with and you assumed…”
Anyways. Mackenzie finally confirms to her stepfather that her “boyfriend” was the drama teacher Mr. Drayfus. Once the unit catches wind of this they rush to Mr. Drayfus’s apartment.
There they find Mr. Drayfus laying on the floor, dead, with a bowling trophy next to him. On the couch, the stepfather, Garret is sitting in a daze.
Back in the interrogation room Garret confesses to the homicide, his defense being “he couldn’t stand the thought of anyone hurting his precious daughter”. Garret was offered 2 years, 1 year probation.
In the A.D.A.’s office, none other than Clinton Drayfus’s boyfriend walks in. He assures the A.D.A that Clinton was engaged to marry next summer. And that the bowling trophy was from an LGBTQ League. Meaning Mackenzie lied about her the relationship with Mr. Drayfus, because he was gay.
At this point Benson decides to coax the truth out of Mackenzie at the grocery store, where Mackenzie is shopping for veal chops to make dinner for her and Garret. Benson lets her know that Garret committed a crime because of Mackenzie’s lies. Mackenzie lets her know that Garret is not at fault as long as he was operating under the implications of the lie at the time he committed the homicide. (How would a thirteen year old know all that?)
Benson realizes Mackenzie is protecting Garret, and wants to bring her to trial.
The trial lasts all of two minutes when Garret’s defense attorney reveals that Mackenzie will not be able to testify of her conversations with her stepfather due to… SPOUSAL PRIVILEGE. It turns out Mackenzie and Garret are married.
A year after Mackenzie’s mother died, Garret got a marriage license for him and Mackenzie. Garret got parental consent from the biological father, in exchange for 10 grand.
In exchange for a deal for his charge on possession of drugs, the biological father agrees to testify that he was bribed by Garret to sign the marriage certificate, in the marriage annulment hearing. Unfortunately, Mackenzie tells the judge how good Garret was to her and her mother, how he loved her. With that, the judge ruled that the marriage was in good standing. This means the prosecution had a weak case against Garret, he would get off when the jury heard how much Garret cared for Mackenzie, he would be get off easy on the homicide.
Garret and Mackenzie are in the interview room. When the detectives realize they have a weak case against Garret, they decide to arrest Mackenzie, for telling a lie that got an innocent man killed. At the sight of Mackenzie in handcuffs Garret breaks down and says how it’s his fault.
Mackenzie claims “No it’s my fault. I was the one who told Mr. Dryfus about us after he asked who got me pregnant. He was my friend. He promised not to say anything.”
So Garret killed Mr. Drayfus because Drayfus knew about Garret’s intimate relationship with Mackenzie. Garret is offered manslaughter 1 and statutory rape. He’s hauled away in handcuffs, leaving Mackenzie in tears.
Benson later goes to visit Mackenzie. They go head to head for a while, Mackenzie maintains she’s practically a woman and Garret loves her.
Bensons gets her to see reason when she tells Mackenzie that Garret stole her childhood from her. She wasn’t out riding her bike or hanging out with friends, instead she was taking care of Garret.
Benson tells her “I didn’t know your mother but I bet she was a good mom. Just like you’re going to be a good mom to that baby”.
Mackenzie starts to cry, implying she had a miscarriage.

- Chrissy jokingly wrote in her Instagram caption that they’re only talking to cool tattoo families now, which feels fair.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend were already the cutest couple in Hollywood, no question, but they just one-upped themselves by getting matching tattoos inspired by their kids (and each other, obvs).
Chrissy just posted the above picture, which shows both their inner arms, and Chrissy’s new tat says “John Luna Miles” in cursive writing while John’s says “Chrissy Luna Miles.” SO CUTE. AH.
In the caption, Chrissy joked that now that they have tattoos, they can only be associated with a particular kind of people. “Hey guys please don’t talk to us unless u have tattoos we are a cool tattoo family now and we only want to talk to other tattoo families (srry if this seems harsh).” Not harsh. Totally fair.
Also! Chrissy got a little heart tattooed on the inside of her pointer finger, and it’s also super cute.

German woman known as ‘scammer socialite’ will likely get deported

Anna Delvey, the infamous “scammer socialite” who posed as a wealthy heiress to infiltrate the upper echelon of New York City’s social scene, is facing deportation after her trial concludes.
The German citizen, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, is currently facing ten counts of larceny after allegedly swindling hundreds of thousands of dollars from banks, hotels and wealthy friends over the course of several years. Delvey, 28, reportedly entered the United States under the Visa Waiver Program in June 2017, but stayed far past the legal timeframe of 90 days.
Rachael Yong Yow, a representative for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said that the department requested that Delvey be handed over to them after her trial, regardless of whether or not she is found guilty.
“ICE is requesting that we be notified prior to her release from local custody so she can be taken into ICE custody,” Yow told INSIDER. “Regardless of whether or not she is convicted, she is amenable for removal because she is a visa waiver overstay. If she is convicted, she is sentenced to serve her time in the US.”
Delvey’s story found viral fame after an article exposing her years-long con was published in New York magazine last year. After successfully convincing the entirety of New York’s social scene that she came from a long line of foreign family money, she secured loans using bad checks worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in an attempt to get funding for a business she planned to launch. She subsequently scammed months worth of free stays in some of the city’s most luxurious hotels, private jets to meetings with Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, and vacations on yachts in Ibiza before her crimes were revealed.
Now, even after being arrested, Delvey owed more than $250,000 in unpaid legal fees she allegedly owes to the firm representing her.
U.S. law designates any fraud-related offenses “in which the loss to the victim(s) is more than $10,000 as a “deportable offense.” According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, she stole approximately $275,000.
Shonda Rhimes, who has been involved in the production of shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” is in the process of creating a Netflix series about Delvey’s life.
Jurors were selected for her trial this past week, and the proceedings are expected to conclude sometime next month.
Prosecutors have reportedly offered her three to nine years behind bars in exchange for a guilty plea, but she continues to plead not guilty.
Dr. Phil sued by former guest

Dr. Phil and a former guest are at odds over residual paychecks.
The talk show host is being sued for $10,000 by Josie Goldberg for her appearances on a 2010 episode aptly titled, “Spoiled and Entitled,” and a 2011 episode titled, “Smart Women, Dumb Choices?,” The Blast reports. She also claimed that she appeared on a 2014 episode featuring the best guests from the show, followed by a 2017 episode checking in on her.
Goldberg alleged that as a SAG/AFTRA performer, she is owed an estimated $10,000 from the episodes as her appearances have continued to generate revenue for the show.
Dr. Phil’s wife, Robin McGraw, is also listed in the suit as Goldberg claimed that Robin laughed at her and gave a “thumbs up” in response to a guest’s comments about Goldberg on the show. As a result, she claims that people have not wanted to work with her and wants $10,000.
A rep for Dr. Phil did not get back to us.

Jordyn Woods isn’t waiting for her scandal to blow over.
Kylie Jenner’s maybe-former best friend stepped out at the launch event for her new Eylure false eyelashes line on Thursday night and thanked fans for their support as she attempts to navigate her feud with the Kardashian-Jenners.

Woods, 21, allegedly hooked up with Tristan Thompson while he was still dating Khloé Kardashian. Khloé has since dumped Tristan, and Kim Kardashian even called her a “single mom” in the aftermath, seemingly confirming the split.
Khloé also hasn’t let her public breakup keep her down, stepping out with best friend Malika Haqq to attend the PrettyLittleThing LA Office Opening Party on Wednesday. The next day, Khloé critically addressed the scandal with quotes on her Instagram story.
“‘The worst pain is gettin [sic] hurt by a person you explained your hurt to,’” read the first quote, seemingly directed at Woods.
Although this was Woods’ first public event, she was spotted out and about in LA in an outfit that could have served as a message to Khloé and Tristan.
Woods wore a pair of sporty slides with “balance” written across one instep and “chaos” printed on the other. The sold-out men’s sandals are from Japanese brand Undercover and were originally priced at $165.

Jussie Smollett Has Been Suspended From “Empire”
The producers issued a statement on Friday, one day after Smollett was arrested for filing a false police report.

As doubts mounted about Jussie Smollett’s story about being the victim of a hate crime, Fox and 20th Century Fox — the network and studio behind his show Empire — stood by him.
Hours before he would turn himself in to the Chicago Police Department to be charged with a felony for filing a false report, the companies issued an unprompted statement, calling Smollett “a consummate professional on set,” and reiterating that his character, Jamal Lyon, is “not being written out of the show.”
Now, with two episodes left to film in Empire‘s 18-episode season, Smollett has in fact been suspended from the soapy musical drama. The decision was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the show’s producers.
“The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us. Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years and we care about him deeply. While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out. We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show and to avoid further disruption on set, we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season,” read the statement from Lee Daniels, Danny Strong, Brett Mahoney, Brian Grazer, Sanaa Hamri, Francie Calfo and Dennis Hammer, the executive producers of Empire.
According to a TMZ story Thursday night, Smollett had gone straight from his bail hearing in a Chicago court that afternoon to the Empire set, delaying production. He tearfully addressed the cast and crew, saying, “”I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls. I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you, you are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this.”
Through his legal team, Smollett is also sticking with the story that he was attacked. His camp issued a statement Thursday night calling him “a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence.”
Smollett told police that he was attacked on Jan. 29 by two men who threw a chemical on him, called him anti-gay and racist slurs, and put a rope around his neck. They also shouted, “This is MAGA country” at him, he said.
The story garnered Smollett support from celebrities (Viola Davis, John Legend) and politicians (Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi) alike.
But shortly after Smollett appeared on Good Morning America on Feb. 14 telling the story of the attack and ripping anyone who doubted him, two local Chicago TV affiliates reported that the attack on Smollett might be a hoax.
Over the next week, Smollett’s story seemed to unravel completely, with his alleged co-conspirators in the hoax, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, turning against him and cooperating with police. On Thursday, Smollett turned himself in to the Chicago Police Department, and later in the day he was released on $100,000 bond.
Despite how ill-conceived this alleged hoax appears to have been, the police have so far not provided a credible motive for why Smollett would want to stage a hate crime against him. On Thursday, police said that Smollett was unhappy with his salary, and that was why he did it. According to a source close to the show, Smollett never expressed dissatisfaction with his $100,000 per episode salary.
And according to multiple sources at Fox and on Empire, Smollett was never in danger of being written off the show, which was one of the theories that was leaked to the local Chicago stations. Eleven days before the alleged attack, Fox pitched a story to BuzzFeed News about Jamal’s upcoming wedding, saying that Smollett and Toby Onwumere (who plays Jamal’s fiancé) “have a great storyline this season, with an upcoming wedding in the second half of the season.”
The show returns from its winter hiatus on March 13, and there will be seven episodes that he is still in, unless Empire producers find a way to change his presence in the show.
When Empire — co-created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong — premiered in winter 2015, it was a massive success, and finished the season as the No. 1 network show among 18-to-49 year-olds. As is often the case, its ratings have fallen off as the seasons have gone on. According to Nielsen, Empire‘s season-to-date ratings are averaging 5.1 million viewers and a 1.5 in the 18-to-49 demographic — which are still strong for a show in its fifth year.
Now the show is under threat for reasons not even Empire writers could ever dream up.
