The Satanic Temple sues Netflix for $150 million for using a statue of a demon god in ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’
- The Satanic Temple is suing Netflix and Warner Brothers for $150 million, saying the companies infringed on its copyrights, violated its trademark, and caused injury to its business reputation in its show “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
- The Satanic Temple says in the lawsuit that it has a copyright on the depiction of Baphomet used in the show.
We usually do not pay much attention to The Church of Satan, but every few months they come about to remind us that they are very much active.
Netflix and Warner Bros. are feeling the wrath of satanists.
The Satanic Temple is suing Netflix and Warner Brothers for $150 million, saying the companies infringed on its copyrights, violated its trademark, and caused injury to its business reputation, according to court documents filed on Thursday in a New York district court.
At the center of the controversy is Baphomet, described in the court documents as “an androgynous goat-headed deity.” A statue of the satanic god surrounded by children is featured in the Netflix series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
However, the lawsuit claims the show’s statue is similar to its real-life Baphomet monument, which was made famous by an Indiegogo campaign in 2014. Although it was intended to be installed next to the Ten Commandments at the Oklahoma State Capitol, it now resides in Detroit after multiple protests. The Baphomet statue has since become “a central icon that has come to represent us [satanists] as a people,” explained The Satanic Temple co-founder Lucien Greaves.
“To have that all at once entirely eclipsed by some Netflix show by a production department who did a Google Image Search… A lot of people who haven’t heard of us first stand to just recognize that monument as the ‘Sabrina’ monument, which dilutes and denigrates the entire project,” he said.
Because the statue is featured prominently in the show, The Satanic Temple claims its members are being associated with the “evil antagonists” depicted in the series. The characters of the show, who worship the “Dark Lord” or Satan, engage in cannibalism, necromancy, murder and torture, among other nefarious activities.
The Satanic Temple, on the other hand, “does not promote evil and instead holds to the basic principle that undue suffering is bad, and that which reduces suffering is good,” the organization claims. It hails Satan as a “rebel against God’s authority, rather than an evil being.”
The religious group reached out to Netflix and Warner Bros. to remove the depiction when it became aware of the statue in the series, but its request went unanswered.
“It does really kind of normalize this notion that the only true meaning of this type of religious identification is one that can be associated with a patriarchal, cannibalistic cult,” Greaves said. “We’re so inundated with this anti-Satan fiction that a lot of people think its superfluous to pursue to a claim like this at all.”
Netflix and Warner Bros. declined to comment, citing pending litigation.

The Obamas’ First Netflix Project Will Be Adapting This Book About the Trump Administration
The Obamas have licensed a book about the Trump administration’s incompetence, which is quite the passive-aggressive way to start out their Netflix deal. According to Deadline, Barack and Michelle have picked up the rights to Michael Lewis’s book The Fifth Risk, which describes how Trump’s animosity toward and failure to understand the basic structure of the government has left many departments severely understaffed or headed up by incompetent appointees. According to Deadline, the Obamas are considering making a possible series out of the book, which Lewis describes as a sort of “civics lesson” about how government really works — or in this case, doesn’t.

Ava DuVernay is making a Prince documentary for Netflix
Apple Music also reportedly has a project around Prince’s legendary 1983 Minneapolis concert.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay will produce a multi-part Prince documentary with Netflix, Deadline reports. The project is being done with the full cooperation of the Prince estate, which has granted the producers access to interviews, archival footage, photos and other materials. “Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses,” DuVernay told Deadline. “The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”
DuVernay earned Oscar and Global Globe nominations for Selma and helmed the Netflix documentary 13th on mass incarceration and race in the United States. She’s also working on a five-part series on the Central Park Five for Netflix. Despite the mess that was Prince’s estate after his death, the Purple One himself might have approved of her involvement. Shortly before passing away, he reportedly reached out to DuVernay about working together, according to Deadline.

‘Survivor: David vs. Goliath’: Emergency forces entire cast to be evacuated off island
It was more than just a game on Wednesday’s episode of Survivor.
The entire cast of Survivor: David vs. Goliath was evacuated from their Fijian island under threat of a cyclone — the second they had experienced since starting the competition just 12 days earlier.
“We’re all Davids today. That’s the Goliath,” Christian said, as he, the Vuku, Jabeni and Tiva tribes were all escorted away from their camps and rushed to safety.
The cast returned to find that, just hours later, their entire camps were completely destroyed. “We get back from being evacuated, and our shelter is obliterated,” Angelina expressed. “Had any of us been inside of that, I mean, it would have been game over, for sure.”
“I think everyone’s mood was like, oh God,” Alec added. “It looked like a bomb went off… It’s pretty intense.”
“Two cyclones, a medical evacuation, a person quitting,” Alison recalled of the adversity they’ve faced since starting the game. “It just speaks to the crazy nature of this game.”
After 37 seasons of Survivor, however, host Jeff Probst wasn’t freaking out. The entire cast of Millennials vs. Gen X was similarly evacuated early in the competition in 2016.
“You are all safe and sound, and the game is back on,” Probst told the David vs. Goliath cast on Wednesday’s episode as they kicked off their first immunity challenge since the cyclone.
Survivor airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
