Spike Lee debuts new short film inspired by George Floyd protests

As nationwide protests continue in response to the killing of George Floyd, iconic filmmaker Spike Lee has released a new short film that speaks to ongoing racial tensions and the brutality of white supremacy in America. Lee edited together footage from his acclaimed film Do The Right Thing with actual footage from the deaths of Eric Garner and George Floyd to create an impactful short titled 3 Brothers – Radio Raheem, Eric Garner, and George Floyd. The short includes the scene from Lee’s 1989 classic in which Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) is violently murdered by white cops. Lee expertly draws parallels between this fictitious (but all too real) killing and the violent deaths of both Garner (killed in 2014) and Floyd (killed on May 25).

Lee premiered 3 Brothers on CNN, where he discussed the response to Floyd’s killing with host Don Lemon:
How can people not understand why people are acting the way they are? This is not new, we saw with the riots in the ’60s, the assassination of Dr. King, every time something jumps off and we don’t get our justice, people are reacting they way they do to be heard. We are seeing this again and again and again. This is the thing: the killing of black bodies, that is what this country is built upon.
In addition to 3 Brothers, Lee is preparing to release his latest feature, Da 5 Bloods, on Netflix this month.

‘Tyler Perry’s Bruh’ debuting on BET streaming service May 7
The latest Tyler Perry project is debuting Thursday, May 7, exclusively on the BET+ streaming service. “Bruh” is a dramedy focused on four 30-something friends who have known each other since college.
This is Perry’s second production exclusively for BET+ following the drama “Ruthless” about a woman trapped in a cult.
The first three episodes of “Bruh” will be available at launch. A new show from the 24-episode season will then drop each week after that.
The publicity materials note that “in a society where companionship between men of color is often misjudged and misrepresented, ‘Tyler Perry’s Bruh’depicts a healthy image of black brotherhood; embracing vulnerability without playing on stereotypical hypermasculinity.”
“Bruh” is a slang term popularized in African-American greek culture, referencing friends so close they’re more like brothers.
That is the case for John (Barry Brewer), Tom (Mahdi Cocci), Mike (Phillip Mullings Jr.) and Bill (Monti Washington), who are navigating different career and relationship paths while relying on each other for support. The publicists note: “Sometimes their love is tough and their honesty brutal, but they manage to see each other through every scenario with levity and laughter.”
As usual, this entire season was written by Perry himself. He also directed and executive produced the series at Tyler Perry Studios.

Resident Alien SYFY Trailer
Meet the latest citizen of this blue marble we call Earth. He’s not from around here. In fact, he’s not even from here! SYFY has dropped the first trailer for its TV adaptation of Resident Alien, a Dark Horse comic of the same name about an alien who crashes on our planet and impersonates a doctor. The newcomer (played by Doom Patrol’s Alan Tudyk) is benevolent enough, but he does struggle with the philosophical question of whether or not humanity deserves to be saved.

As you can see, the new Doctor Harry Vanderspeigle does an alright job of fitting in, although his true form can be seen by a young boy in the small Colorado town in which the titular character makes his new home. The pilot episode wastes no time in kicking off the action when “Harry,” fresh off his impersonation transformation, is forced to interact with his fellow flesh bags in order to solve a mysterious murder.
“The longer he is on Earth, it starts to play upon him. He starts to feel emotions,” Tudyk said over the weekend at the Winter Television Critic’s Association Press Tour.
“I love the humor in the comic and try to preserve all that,” creator Chris Sheridan said of the comic book source material by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse at NYCC 2019. “I felt like there’s a lot of optimism in the comics. I wanted to capture that [too]. There’s a lot of great stuff on TV, but a lot of dark stuff [as well]. I didn’t want it to be one of those.”
Resident Alien premieres on SYFY this summer. The show also features the acting talents of Sara Tomko (Sneaky Pete), Corey Reynolds (The Closer), Alice Wetterlund (Silicon Valley), and Levi Fiehler (Mars).
