Who Was Madam C.J. Walker’s Daughter A’Lelia And What Happened To Her?
She played a huge role in her mother’s success
If you’ve seen Netflix’s Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, then you know all about Sarah Breedlove (a.k.a. Madam C.J Walker), one of America’s first self-made female millionaires. The film follows Madam C.J., played by Octavia Spencer, on her journey to developing a black haircare empire. But she didn’t do it alone.
Her daughter, A’Lelia Walker, played by Tiffany Haddish, also had a significant role in the success of her mother’s company and eventually took over the business. Unfortunately, A’Lelia passed away in 1931 in the same way her mother did—from hypertension, according to a blog run by Madam C.J. Walker’s great-great granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles.
But before she died, A’Lelia Walker accomplished a lot, not just for her mother’s company but for the black community at the time. Here’s everything we know about Madame C.J. Walker’s daughter, A’Lelia Walker.
A’Lelia was born Lelia McWilliams.
A’Lelia Walker was born as Lelia, according to Bundles. At 2-years-old, her father, Moses McWilliams died and Madam C.J.raised her as a single mother. The two moved to St. Louis to live with three of Madam C.J.’s brothers. Eventually, the mogul remarried to a man named Charles Walker (hence the name Madam C.J. Walker). A’Lelia took the Walker name to identify more closely with her mother’s business, according to Bundles’ blog. Here’s a photo of the real A’lelia Walker getting her nails done at one of Madam C.J.’s salons:
She moved to New York to expand the business.
In 1913, Madam C.J. purchased two townhouses on 136th Street in Harlem, according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She and A’Lelia hired an architect to combine the properties into one unit. Once complete, the first floor was used as the Walker Hair Parlor, the basement was the Lelia College of Beauty Culture, where new hires were trained, and the top three floors were used by A’Lelia to live and entertain.
A’Lelia was married three times.
Although
the Netflix docuseries hints that A’Lelia might have been interested in
women, she never admitted to it. In fact, A’Lelia was married three
times—all of her partners men, according to Bundles. You meet A’Lelia’s first husband in Self-Made—John
Robinson, the hotel worker who dreamed of opening a juke joint. Well,
you saw how that turned out. In 1919, A’Lelia reportedly married Dr.
Wiley Wilson after her mom died. And her third husband was another
doctor and World War I captain, James Kennedy.
Madam C.J. Walker’s Irvington, NY mansion was named after A’Lelia.
When Madam C.J moved to New York to be closer to her daughter she purchased a mansion in Irvington, New York for $250,000 (which was $$ back then!), according to the NY Post. The home was 20,000 square-feet, had a swimming pool, marble floor, and was in the same neighborhood as the Rockefeller family, which was shown in Self Made.
The mansion came to be called the Villa Lewaro, after Leila Walker Robinson (remember Robinson, her first husband?), according to NPR. Take the first two letters of her first, middle, and last name: Le-Wa-Ro.
She was played a major role in the Harlem Renaissance for the black and queer community.
Although the film paints A’Lelia as having her head in the clouds, she was a serious businesswoman. Before taking over the company when her mother died, A’Lelia ran the east coast operations of the business, according to Bundles’ blog. And when A’lelia moved to Harlem, she made a name for herself fundraising for charities and founding the Harlem Debutantes Club.
She
was also known for her lavish parties at both her home in Irvington and
at her Manhattan salon, known as The Dark Tower. “They provided a safe,
welcoming environment for queer people at a time when there were few
other social options available. While she herself was not known to be
lesbian or bisexual, Walker’s parties were places where anyone could
express their sexuality however they pleased,” NPR reported.
Many of Harlem Renaissance’s finest came to A’Lelia’s parties, including Langtson Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Carl Van Vechten. Hughes called her “the joy goddess of Harlem’s 1920s,” according to NPR.

Ari Lennox Freaks Out When Lakeith Stanfield Asks Her Out
Lakeith Stanfield asked Ari Lenox out on Instagram Live and her reaction was priceless.
Ari Lennox hops on Instagram Live on a damn-near daily basis and, these days, it’s probably the best method of feeling like you’re hanging out with friends. With the social distancing movement in full effect, celebrities (and everybody else) are confined to their own homes as we navigate this global pandemic together. Ari was on a live-stream this week when, of all people, actor Lakeith Standfield joined in. The Dreamville songstress realized who was tuning in before she commented on how she saw his most recent film The Photograph in theaters all by herself. Whenever the theater re-opens though, she has an opportunity to go see it again with the star himself.
“Can you be my date? Let’s go,” asked Stanfield in the comments, effectively shooting his shot.
Ari was perplexed by his forward ask, going bonkers and attempting to change the subject, but her freaked-out tone did all the necessary talking for her.
“Lakeith, I don’t have time for this. You’re joking. Wait… let’s change the subject. Because I heard some things,” exclaimed the singer before giving a lively tour of her new purchases at Guitar Center, which included a keyboard, new microphone, stands, and a guitar. The entire time she was showing off the equipment though, she seemed stoked that Lakeith Stanfield was even showing an interest in her.
Do you think they’ll get a chance to date?

Angie Martinez Once Fought Wendy Williams
Angie Martinez and Wendy Williams were both powerhouses in urban radio in the 90s and 2000s. The two women broke barriers in their reporting on hip hop at a time when it was male-dominated. Naturally, the powers that be would try and pit them against one another, as opposed to enforcing girl power.
However, Martinez revealed in her memoir that it wasn’t the men who stirred up drama between them, but Williams’s gossip itself. They came to blows in an epic behind the scenes showdown.
Angie Martinez details fight with Wendy Williams
In Martinez’s 2016 memoir My Voice, she chronicled her life as a hip-hop radio personality. She got her start at Hot 97 in New York City at just 16-years-old and worked her way up from intern to radio host and interviewed some of the biggest names in rap, including the late Tupac Shakur.
Her and Williams both eventually worked at the station during different time periods and were two of the most popular radio hosts – but they had differing styles of reporting. Williams became famous for airing out people’s dirty laundry while Martinez took a more journalistic approach. When Williams revealed Martinez’s personal business, it landed her in hot water with Martinez.
Martinez was dating rapper Q-Tip at the time and Williams made snide remarks about Martinez and Q-Tip’s relationship. Williams said on her show, “One of my co-workers is dating Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. Oh well. I guess some women like men who like men.” Martinez was pissed.
“Everybody was gay to Wendy,” Martinez wrote in the book. “Every rapper you could think of in that era, I had heard Wendy Williams call them gay. Not one or two. Like every one of them.”
Martinez tried reaching out to Williams to hash things out but each time, she failed. Frustrated, she confronted Williams at the station.
“I lost my f–king mind,” she wrote. “Before I knew it I was swinging at her. It was a quick scuffle. It took only a few seconds for me to realize that she wasn’t really hitting me back — she was just trying to get me off of her.”
Williams grabbed a nearby mop after they were separated by a co-worker to defend herself against Martinez. Martinez wrote that Williams “just stood there with it like she wanted to have some sort of sword fight or something. It was actually kind of funny, even in the moment.”
They were both suspended from the station and Martinez claimed Williams called on her listeners to harass Martinez.
“I used to get threatening faxes . . . that said things like, B–ch, get off the radio. I’ll break your jaw,’ ” she wrote. “It was awful and it made me insecure.”
Williams was eventually fired from Hot 97, with Martinez claiming that station executives were fed up with Williams’s rude behavior.
How is the relationship between Wendy Williams and Angie Martinez today?
Martinez said that she didn’t ever run into Williams after their fight and Williams’s firing from Hot 97. She remained on Hot 97 for 25 years before leaving in 2014 to work for its rival station, Power 105.1 in New York City.
Williams left radio altogether in 2008 to transition into television. Before her hit daytime talk show, she hosted The Wendy Williams Experience on VH1 while working for the radio station WBLS in 2006.
After years of not seeing or speaking to one another, Williams interviewed Martinez in 2016 when Martinez was promoting her memoir. The two made peace but things went sour on Williams’s end after she was allegedly furious over Martinez inking a deal for her own daytime talk show.

Kenneth Petty Snatched by the Feds (Forgot to Register for the Sex Offender Registry)
Article via TMZ
Nicki Minaj‘s husband’s past is coming back to bite him in the ass — he’s been arrested by U.S. Marshals on an indictment for failing to register as a sex offender … TMZ has learned.
Kenneth Petty was in federal custody Wednesday — we’re told he turned himself into the Marshals. According to court docs, he’ll face a judge later today. Petty moved to California in July 2019, but according to law enforcement he got pulled over in Beverly Hills in November and that’s when his legal troubles started.
We’re told Bev Hills PD made a traffic stop on November 15 and determined Petty was a registered sex offender in New York state but had not registered in California … as required.
He was arrested and released on a $20,000 bond. The L.A. County D.A. charged him for failing to register as a sex offender.
It appears he still didn’t check in after that because now the feds are in on the case. He was indicted in federal court for the same thing … failing to register.
As we’ve reported, Kenneth’s rap sheet includes a 1995 conviction for first-degree attempted rape. He served almost 4 years in NY state prison for the crime and was required to register as a sex offender. If convicted on the federal charge for failure to register, Kenneth faces up to 10 years in prison.
TMZ broke the story … Nicki and Kenneth hit up the Bev Hills Courthouse to get a marriage license in July … around the time the couple moved to Cali.
We’ve reached out to Nicki’s camp for comment, so far no word back.

UCLA Gymnast Goes Viral for Incredible Beyoncé Routine 1 Year After Former Teammate Katelyn Ohashi
Nia Dennis is wowing the internet with her sensational floor routine, set to a powerful medley of Beyoncé hits
Move over Beyoncé, the internet is getting in formation for Nia Dennis’ sensational performance.
After the UCLA Bruins gymnast wowed the juges at a NCAA women’s collegiate gymnastics meet last weekend, her floor routine — set to a powerful medley of Beyoncé hit songs — went viral.
The college junior — who has made air-signing her name part of her signature stand-out floor choreography — took things to the next level with her one-of-a-kind Beyoncé mashup.
A homecoming performance that would make @Beyonce proud! @DennisNia made us lose our breath with her 9.975 on floor exercise last weekend in Pauley.
Who else is crazy in love with her routine? ? pic.twitter.com/XE4VvTrZOK
— UCLA Gymnastics (@uclagymnastics) February 28, 2020
Featuring orchestral versions of hits like “Crazy in Love,” “Ego,” and even Destiny Child’s “Lose My Breath,” Dennis commanded the floor, mixing her stunts with some of the Grammy-winner’s famous dance moves.
The gymnast kicked off her routine with a powerful strut across the floor, mimicking Beyoncé’s famous 2018 Coachella stage dancers. As the routine continued — in between round-offs and jumps — Dennis can be seen doing the singer’s signature “Single Ladies” shuffle while incorporating traditional stepping movements.
The 21-year-old —who celebrated her milestone birthday Sunday night — also creatively threw in the dab move and ended her routine by confidently placing an invisible crown on her head.
Dennis earned a 9.975 score out of 10.0 for her routine and was the first of three members of her team to achieve that high score for the Bruins, ESPN reported.
And while the Beyoncé-loving gymnast was just short of a perfect score, her teammate, senior Grace Glenn, made history as the first NCAA gymnast to land a perfect 10.0 as the leadoff member of the UCLA team, according to ESPN.
Dennis and her team’s viral and history-making routines come a year after former teammate Katelyn Ohashi broke the internet with her own perfect 10-scoring floor routine.
Last January, Ohashi’s electric routine featured impressive passes and flips and was soundtracked by upbeat music like Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September,” and The Jackson 5’s “ABC.”
The recent college graduate previously told PEOPLE she knew her routine was going well at the time, but she wasn’t thinking about her score.
“I would have never guessed I have like senators reposting me,” she previously said, referencing the likes of California Senator Kamala Harris. “It’s just crazy and honoring.”

Angela Stanton is Shocked President Donald Trump Pardoned!
Donald Trump released a long list of surprising pardons this week, from former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. to the former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik.
The 11 individuals pardoned included convicted white-collar criminals and the former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, who was accused of attempting to sell Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat.
House Republicans from Illinois were extremely disappointed in Blavojevich’s commutation, issuing a joint statement that read in part, “We are disappointed by the president’s commutation
of Rod Blagojevich’s federal sentence. We believe he received an
appropriate and fair sentence, which was the low-end of the federal
sentencing guidelines for the gravity of his public corruption
convictions. Blagojevich is the face of public corruption in Illinois.”
There was also one pardon that some did not see coming, Angela Stanton.
In 2007, she served a 6-month home confinement sentence for her role in
a stolen-vehicle ring. Yesterday, she received a presidential pardon
from Trump.
Stanton, who is mentored by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece and diehard Trump supporter Alveda King, told conservative site Newsmax ,“I just started hyperventilating right at the airport. I was just crying like a baby. People thought someone had died.”
She continued, “I just had to sit there for a minute to digest it all. I
always said that when I left this world, that would still be on my
record. I just wanted to finally, truly be free. Today, hours before my
birthday, it has happened for me … and I’m still in absolute disbelief,
I’m in shock.”
In Newsmax, King, who is descrived as an “evangelist and
pro-life warrior,” admitted to talking with Trump about Staton. King
claims she told Trump after he signed the pardon, “Wow, you really make
promises, then you keep them.”
Angela Stanton also appeared on TMZ Live and bizarrely criticized
President Barack Obama’s Fair Sentencing Act, claiming that is a reason
why people were “left behind” in prison. The 2010 Fair Sentencing Act was widely praised and reduced the imposition of mandatory minimum
sentences and eliminated the mandatory minimum sentence for simple
possession of crack cocaine.

Disneyland Pays Tribute to Kobe Bryant in More Ways Than One
Disneyland paid tribute to their frequent guest, the late Kobe Bryant, and his daughter Gianna this week, days after their passing.
Disney’s Fab 5 — Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Pluto — all joined in on a huddle and did Bryant’s iconic jump shot pose together. Fans looked on in amazement and captured the moment on video.
Aside from the characters’ sweet tribute, a Disney fan edited a photo of Space Mountain to seem like it was lit with the Los Angeles Lakers’ signature purple and yellow colors.
To signify his legacy even more, the park also turned off the No. 8 vehicle on Dumbo the Flying Elephant in Fantasyland, which was reportedly one of Bryant’s family’s favorite rides. Cast members at the park reportedly put a cover over the vehicle to honor Kobe and Gianna.
Disney CEO Bob Iger shared two tweets to honor the fallen legend. “Our company @Disney mourns the tragic loss of @kobebryant… one of the most respected & popular athletes of our time… a friend and a fan of ours, full of life and taken from us too soon,” he wrote in a statement.
Aside from the company’s sweet tributes, a Disney fan edited a photo of Space Mountain to seem like it was lit with the Los Angeles Lakers’ signature purple and yellow colors.
Bryant previously spoke about his love for the park during a fan Q&A session where one guest asked what his favorite ride was.”I enjoy Soarin’ Over California,” Bryant replied.
He added that he recently took his family to Disney’s California Adventure. “You see that big ferris wheel they have? We didn’t realize how big the thing was, so we took our kids on that thing … we thought child services was gonna be waiting for us when we got off!”
Bryant and his wife Vanessa previously celebrated their 20th anniversary at the theme park. Most recently, they attended Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.
The NBA icon frequently attended Disney events and participated in parades at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The Sports World Is In Shock After The News Of Kobe Bryant Passing away in a Helicopter crash?
Husband of woman who died in crash that killed Kobe Bryant speaks out about tragedy
“I got three small kids and am trying to figure out how to navigate life with three kids and no mom,” Matt Mauser said of the death of his wife, Christina.
The husband of a woman who died Sunday along with Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash said there are “no words” to describe the tragedy.
“It’s horrible,” Matt Mauser said, holding back tears while talking about the death of his wife, Christina Mauser.
“I got three small kids and am trying to figure out how to navigate life with three kids and no mom,” he said during an interview Monday on the “TODAY” show.
Christina Mauser, 38, was one of seven people, in addition to Bryant, 41, and his daughter, 13, who died Sunday morning in the Calabasas crash. She was the assistant coach for Gianna Bryant’s Mamba Academy basketball team, a job for which Mauser said Bryant personally selected her.
“He picked her because she was amazing,” Mauser said. “I was so proud of her and she was so happy.”
Matt and Christina Mauser, whose three kids are ages 11, 9 and 3, were both teachers working at a small private school that Bryant’s daughters attended. Mauser said he was the basketball coach and his wife was the assistant coach when Bryant noticed “what an amazing mind” Christina Mauser had for the game and brought her on his coaching team.
“He asked her to teach the kids defense,” Mauser said of his wife, adding Bryant said that wasn’t his specialty. “They called her the mother of defense.”
“She was beautiful, smart, funny,” he said of Christina Mauser. “She was incredibly deep … just an amazing person.”
Other victims included John Altobelli, the head baseball coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California; his wife, Keri; and their daughter Alyssa. The college, in confirming the deaths, said in a statement that Altobelli had coached there for 27 years.
“John meant so much to not only Orange Coast College, but to baseball,” the school’s athletic director Jason Kehler said in a statement. “He truly personified what it means to be a baseball coach.”
Altobelli led his team to four state championships during his career, and was named the National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2019.
Kehler said Altobelli, who people called “Coach Alto,” treated his players like family and offered the school’s deepest condolences to the whole family.
Payton Chester, a 13-year-old basketball player, and her mother, Sarah, were also passengers on the helicopter. Calling the crash a “freak accident,” Payton’s grandmother Catherine George told NBC News that “they had to get on the helicopter as a convenience today, they usually drove by car.”
Mauser said he and his family have been trying to avoid watching the news, but when he briefly turned on SportsCenter last night, one of his daughters turned to him and said it was “nice to know everyone was hurting along with us.“
“I’m scared, I think more than anything, I’m a little scared about the future,” Mauser said of his life without his wife.

Medical device used during labor falls out of patient 10 weeks later
As Laura Jokinen made her way home from a walk with her newborn son in October 2018, the shooting pain she’d been experiencing in her abdomen for weeks became unbearable.
She limped home and buckled to the floor, screaming for her husband to help.
“It was at that point I reached down and felt a metal device protruding out of my vagina,” said Jokinen, who works in health care as a risks assessment researcher.
“I freaked out … I didn’t know what the device was or where it came from. It looked almost like a battery, and there were wires that were running up inside me. I was afraid to remove it, because I wasn’t sure if it was attached to my insides.”
The experience points to alarming statistics. Canada saw a major jump — 14 per cent over the last five years — in the number of medical items left inside patients after procedures, according to a study released Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), a not-for-profit group that collects data on the quality of health care in the country.
CIHI said 553 such objects were left inside patients over the last two years.
Canada has the highest rate among developed countries of medical items being left inside patients, according to a separate study from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
That means medical teams across the country need to do a better job of following existing safety procedures, according to Sandi Kossey, senior director of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), a not-for-profit healthcare watchdog.
“There are checks and balances that should happen,” said Kossey. “There are enough preventative measures that should be in place, that these things should not happen.”
Jokinen, who lives in Parksville, B.C., had to have an emergency caesarean section on Aug. 11, 2018, at the Nanaimo General Hospital.
Before surgery, the medical team attached an electrode to the baby’s head while he was still in the womb to monitor his heartbeat.
Part of the monitor was removed during the C-section. But the medical team forgot to take out the rest.
Two weeks after Jokinen was discharged, she started having complications: an infection of her surgical incision and heavy, prolonged vaginal bleeding.
Her doctors prescribed antibiotics but didn’t detect what had been left inside her. It remained there for 10 weeks until it dislodged.
Jokinen tried to find out, through the regional health authority, what the monitor was made of and how the mistake might have affected her health and that of her baby.
“At that point, he was two months old and I was breastfeeding, so I was really concerned about what risks this posed to his health,” Jokinen said.
Jokinen says she was on pins and needles for more than a month waiting to hear back. The response she finally got, she says, was less than helpful.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority told her even the manufacturer couldn’t say what the effect might be since the device was only designed and tested for use over periods of 24 hours or less.
It said it looked at devices made of similar materials and didn’t believe there were any long-term risks to Jokinen or her baby from the breakdown of the components.
Jokinen says she wanted the health authority to take responsibility, but it refused, saying the failure was by the surgeon who is an independent contractor and not an employee.
“Physicians in B.C. are independent contractors who are licensed and regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.,” the authority said in an email to Go Public.
Jokinen said she was surprised by the health authority’s reaction.
“They’re responsible for their subcontractor’s actions and … providing safeguards to make sure that people aren’t harmed.”
Kossey, at the CPSI, agrees. “Certainly, they are responsible for what happens under their watch and within their facility,” she said.
Jokinen chose not to pursue action against the surgeon.
Go Public reached out to HealthCareCAN, an organization that represents hospitals across Canada, for comment but did not immediately hear back.
‘Systemic flaw’
According to the most recent report on the quality of healthcare in OECD countries, a foreign body — sponges, needles, clamps, scissors, etc. — is left inside a patient in Canada 9.8 times out of every 100,000 surgeries. That’s three times the average.
The next-highest OECD results were Sweden at 8.3 followed by Netherlands with 4.6 per 100,000.
“The data shows that we’re not doing as good as we should be as a developed country,” Kossey told Go Public.
But she also suggests the reason Canada appears to have more mistakes could be in the accuracy of the reporting itself.
“Some of the other countries … being compared against may have different cultures around how they’re collecting and using that information … it’s a bit of a mixed signal,” she said.
Kossey says medical teams need to ensure they do an appropriate inventory of equipment used during all procedures and to communicate clearly with the patient and family members — even in the most chaotic situations — what’s being done so there are no surprises.
Jokinen was surprised to hear how often something goes wrong. “That points at a systemic flaw in our healthcare system,” she said.
“In order to address that, we need to first acknowledge that it’s happening. The health authorities need to take responsibility for the actions of their subcontractors and they also have to come up with a mitigation plan to avoid these types of events,” she said.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority told Jokinen it has made changes. Non-surgical devices like the monitor that was left inside her were added to a checklist of items that need to be retrieved after medical procedures.
“We deeply regret that this patient had a poor care experience and we sincerely apologize to her,” a spokesperson wrote in its email to Go Public.
