Mother dies and father unresponsive from heroin overdose in 7 year old daughter’s hospital bathroom
CINCINNATI — Police arrived at an Ohio hospital Thursday to find a mother dead and a father unresponsive from a heroin overdose on the floor of their 7-month-old child’s hospital room bathroom.
The parents had traveled from Alabama to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to seek treatment for their child.
The mother, identified Friday by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office as Mary Landers, 31, of Trinity, Ala., was found dead from an apparent overdose at the hospital, police said.
Wesley Landers, also of Trinity, was found with a heroin syringe in his arm, needles strewn on the bathroom sink and a loaded and chambered handgun in his pants pocket, according to court documents.
He was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment and was arrested on charges of possession of drugs, carrying a concealed weapon, having weapons while under disability and possessing drug abuse instruments.
During his arraignment in Hamilton County (Ohio) court Friday, Wesley Landers’ stance and posture were unchanged for most of it until his wife was mentioned.
At that moment, Landers dropped his head, closed his eyes and leaned against the lectern in front of him.
“If the heroin epidemic has exhibited itself in a more tragic form, I haven’t seen it,” said Judge Curt Kissinger during Landers’ arraignment.
Bond was set at $500,000 with the judge saying he weighed heavily that Landers is now a single father. The amount could be revisited in coming days, Kissinger said.
Officials at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center would not release further information on the incident and referred further questions to police.
Facebook and GoFundMe pages linked to the Landers show they were in Cincinnati seeking medical treatment for their 7-month-old daughter. Posts state the family was seeking assistance with covering out-of-pocket expenses for surgery the baby was undergoing Wednesday.
Trinity is about 33 miles west of Huntsville, Ala. The family traveled about 400 miles to Cincinnati for treatment.
Sarasota parents zip-tied daughter, confined her to ‘playhouse’ inside home, investigators say
The parents of a 12-year-old girl in Sarasota have been arrested after it was discovered she was routinely restrained by zip ties and confined to a “playhouse.”
Eugenio Erquiaga, 51, and Victoria Erquiaga, 53, are charged with aggravated child abuse, according to detectives from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the two would restrain their daughter’s hands and ankles with zip ties when she got angry and regularly locked her in a playhouse in a loft area of their home. Investigators said it was also used as her bedroom.
On Dec. 27, deputies were called to the area for a possible kidnapping after the 12-year-old went to a neighbor’s front porch with her hands and ankles tied.
Deputies investigated and the girl showed them the “playhouse.”
According to the affidavit, the room was 5 feet by 7 feet wide and 7 feet tall. The door could be barred shut by a large piece of wood and all but one of the windows had been screwed shut. The playhouse reeked of urine and the wooden floor was discolored. The girl said she was often forced to soil herself because she couldn’t get out of the playhouse.
The room also contained an “eye hook.” The Erquiagas told deputies they would secure the girl’s zip ties to the hook to keep her from kicking the playhouse apart. They also stated that while the child is allowed to eat dinner with the family, which includes seven other children, she is sometimes forced to sit on the floor to eat.
The Erquiagas said their daughter has behavioral issues, which is why they took the actions they did.
The couple’s other children have been taken into protective custody.

Mother tried to poison daughter who has Down syndrome
An Upstate mother is accused of trying to murder her daughter who has Down syndrome by poisoning her with medication.
Pamela Ann Contreras, 68, of Spartanburg, has been charged with attempted murder and abuse of a vulnerable adult. Contreras put prescription drugs in her daughter’s drink in an attempt to kill her, according to arrest warrants.
A police officer responded to an attempted suicide on Dec. 7.
The officer arrived to Contreras’ apartment and found her daughter in the kitchen holding a glass of orange liquid with a powdery substance along the edge, according to an incident report.
The officer took the drink from the victim, who would not speak. Contreras later told the officer that her daughter does not talk.
Contreras said she used a pill grinder to grind up medication that she placed in her daughter’s drink. She then planned to stab her to death when she passed out, the report states.
Contreras told the officer that she feared no one would care for her daughter after she died. She claimed she also drank a similar mixture, but an officer noted in the report that Contreras’ glass was mostly full, while her daughter’s large glass only had around two inches of liquid left in the bottom.
Both women were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Contreras was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center on Tuesday.

Positive News: North Carolina Pastor Prays For A Man With Gun In His Church
It’s always heart warming to hear stories about things like this. In North Carolina a pastor definitely put his faith to the test after a man carrying an assault rifle, walked into his church. The incident occurred at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday, New Year’s Eve, at Heal the Land Outreach Ministries in Fayetteville.
The man told the crowd that the Lord had told him he needed to go to the church before he did something bad. The armed man and Pastor Larry Wright met near the front of the church.”Can I help you?” the pastor asked.”His next words were, ‘can you pray for me?'” Wright told the TV station. The man remained calm as Wright took the gun away and had deacons embrace him. Wright prayed, and the man fell to his knees and cried.
The man was invited to sit on the front row, and he asked to get saved before police arrived to take him to a mental health facility. He later returned to the church to thank Wright for helping him, stating that he was facing financial struggles and his wife was sick. He plans to get baptized this Sunday at the same church.
It’s very touching to hear stories like this. As a firm believer in God it felt good to hear that this man not only didn’t hurt anybody but also chose to get saved and baptized in that same church. I hope to hear similar stories like this in the future.

Woman And Her Father Charged With Murdering Her Husband
A woman in North Carolina and her ex-FBI agent father have been charged with the murder of her husband. Molly Martens Corbett, 31, and Thomas Michael Martens, 65, were both charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in death of Jason Corbett.
Police found Corbett unresponsive, and suffering from head injuries, on Aug. 2. His wife and father-in-law were home at the time, and they gave statements to police linking the death to a “domestic disturbance”. Thomas Michael Martens, the retired FBI agent who reported the incident, stated that he hit his son-in-law with a baseball bat.
Molly Martens Corbett’s uncle, Mike Earnest, says that he expects the father and daughter to claim self-defense, stating that their actions were necessary and justified.
Since her arrest she has been asserting her innocence stating, “I cannot believe the level of slander, harassment, lies and absolute utter corruption. The truth does not matter. Shouldn’t the truth matter? Shouldn’t the truth prevail? Doesn’t anyone care about the truth?”.
Suspect Arrested In The Shooting Death Of College Student
It’s sad to hear about people dying when they’re barely getting into the new year. As of Tuesday a suspect was arrested in the shooting death of a college student after an apparent road rage incident.
Eric Jamal Johnson, who was an active U.S. Marine, was taken in to custody in Yuma, Arizona after a warrant was put out for his arrest for shooting 20 year old Sarah Mutschlechner, a junior at the University of North Texas. Mutschlechner was driving home from a New Years Eve party at around 2:00 a.m. with her sorority sisters when a black SUV pulled up beside them.
The SUV was carrying abut five or six men and words were exchanged between the two vehicles. Someone in the SUV then fired at the car and Mutschlechner was struck before crashing her car. She remained on life support for most of the day Friday before she died, her friends also suffered minor injuries.
Barely into the new year and people are killing one another. Seriously what makes someone so mad to the point where he felt the need to pull out a gun and shoot at someone who just celebrated the new year? Him and rest of his homeboys need to be thrown under the jail for this.

Okay why was these boys out at 1am in the first place? Their asses should have been in they homes in bed ASLEEP! I do think the shooter overreacted though. I hope these boys have LEARNED that it’s NOT the age of playful pranks where folks will laugh it off; let it go. When games like this was played back in the day it was done during the day EARLY evenings. I pray these boys get well soon!
An Oklahoma man who who shot a 14-year-old boy in the back while he was playing “ding-dong ditch” on New Year’s Eve has not been arrested for the shooting, reports NewsOne 6.
According to police, Cole Peyton said he and two friends were ringing doorbells and running away well after after midnight on New Year’s Eve. After ringing the bell at one house, one homeowner stepped out of his door and shot the teen once in the back and again in the arm as the honor student told his friends to run.
Police were called to the scene for what was initially called a home invasion, but what they discovered was something entirely different.
“We saw three kids walking down by the newer houses. It was kind of odd, but didn’t….
