2 men arrested in Nassau County after 8 kids found selling candy in the cold
NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. — Two men are expected to appear in court Monday after being arrested over the weekend for allegedly dropping eight children off in the cold to sell candy to strangers.
The arrests came after officers said they spotted a 11-year-old girl selling candy and cookies in front of a Starbucks on South Oyster Bay Road Sunday around 5 p.m. Sunday.
The girl was not properly dressed for the cold weather, according to police. Temperatures were in the 40s and 50s.
It is not clear if the men had any relation to the children, or what they intended to use the money raised for.
The child told police two men in a van dropped her off, along with other children, so they could sell candy, police said.
Eight children in all were located in the area, and all believed they were raising money for the New York Youth Club, according to police.
Several of the kids said they were cold and could not get ahold of the men who dropped them off, police said.
Officers said they later located the van, and the two men were arrested.
Kavon Thompson, 19, of Rosedale, faces charges of unlawful possession of marijuana and eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Jamainne Hall, 24, of West Hempstead, also faces eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Both men are expected to be arraigned Monday.
The children were released to their family members after the incident, according to police.
Mother throws 1-year-old to the ground when neighbor won’t give her beer
Burlington, N.C. (WGHP) — A mother threw her 1-year-old child to the ground after her neighbor refused to give her a beer in Burlington, according to police.
Kyesha Sherell Willis, 29, of Burlington, faces charges of assault on a child under the age of 12, simple assault and resist, delay and obstruct.
Officers were called to an apartment complex at 2016 Morningside Drive at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday where police said the suspect went to visit her neighbor.
Willis allegedly demanded that her neighbor give her a beer and when she didn’t get one, she threw her child to the ground, according to police. She then allegedly assaulted the neighbor.
Police said the Alamance County Department of Social Services was contacted and the child was placed in the custody of a grandmother.
The child did not have any type of lasting injuries. Willis was jailed under a secured bond of $5,000.
Stephen Hawking left us bold predictions on AI, superhumans, and aliens
The late physicist Stephen Hawking’s last writings predict that a breed of superhumans will take over, having used genetic engineering to surpass their fellow beings.
In Brief Answers to the Big Questions, to be published on Oct. 16 and excerpted today in the UK’s Sunday Times (paywall), Hawking pulls no punches on subjects like machines taking over, the biggest threat to Earth, and the possibilities of intelligent life in space.
Artificial Intelligence
Hawking delivers a grave warning on the importance of regulating AI, noting that “in the future AI could develop a will of its own, a will that is in conflict with ours.” A possible arms race over autonomous-weapons should be stopped before it can start, he writes, asking what would happen if a crash similar to the 2010 stock market Flash Crash happened with weapons. He continues:
In short, the advent of super-intelligent AI would be either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. The real risk with AI isn’t malice, but competence. A super-intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours we’re in trouble. You’re probably not an evil ant-hater who steps on ants out of malice, but if you’re in charge of a hydroelectric green-energy project and there’s an anthill in the region to be flooded, too bad for the ants. Let’s not place humanity in the position of those ants.
Earth’s bleak future, gene editing, and superhumans
The bad news: At some point in the next 1,000 years, nuclear war or environmental calamity will “cripple Earth.” However, by then, “our ingenious race will have found a way to slip the surly bonds of Earth and will therefore survive the disaster.” The Earth’s other species probably won’t make it, though.
The humans who do escape Earth will probably be new “superhumans” who have used gene editing technology like CRISPR to outpace others. They’ll do so by defying laws against genetic engineering, improving their memories, disease resistance, and life expectancy, he says
Hawking seems curiously enthusiastic about this final point, writing, “There is no time to wait for Darwinian evolution to make us more intelligent and better natured.”
Once such superhumans appear, there are going to be significant political problems with the unimproved humans, who won’t be able to compete. Presumably, they will die out, or become unimportant. Instead, there will be a race of self-designing beings who are improving themselves at an ever-increasing rate. If the human race manages to redesign itself, it will probably spread out and colonise other planets and stars.
Intelligent life in space
Hawking acknowledges there are various explanations for why intelligent life hasn’t been found or has not visited Earth. His predictions here aren’t so bold, but his preferred explanation is that humans have “overlooked” forms of intelligent life that are out there.
Does God exist?
No, Hawking says.
The question is, is the way the universe began chosen by God for reasons we can’t understand, or was it determined by a law of science? I believe the second. If you like, you can call the laws of science “God”, but it wouldn’t be a personal God that you would meet and put questions to.
The biggest threats to Earth
Threat number one one is an asteroid collision, like the one that killed the dinosaurs. However, “we have no defense” against that, Hawking writes. More immediately: climate change. “A rise in ocean temperature would melt the ice caps and cause the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide,” Hawking writes. “Both effects could make our climate like that of Venus with a temperature of 250C.”
The best idea humanity could implement
Nuclear fusion power. That would give us clean energy with no pollution or global warming.

Plane rampage grandfather-of-25 who exposed his penis and slapped an American TV exec
Plane rampage grandfather-of-25 who exposed his penis and slapped an American TV exec after downing five glasses of wine on BA flight from New Orleans to London is spared jail
- Hatam Hamad, 56, was on BA flight from New Orleans to London last week
- He necked five glasses of wine then revealed his genitals and walked around
- Hamad approached TV executive and slapped him in the chest with his hand
- Handed a suspended jail sentence at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Friday
A grandfather-of-25 who marched through a packed plane with his genitals exposed and slapped a senior US TV executive on the chest has been spared jail.
Hatam Hamad, 56, necked five glasses of wine then revealed his genitals on a British Airways flight from New Orleans to London last week.
He marched down the aisle and attacked father-of-two Joel Vilmenay, who was with his wife and young children.

Furious Mr Vilmenay, president of New Orleans TV channel WDSU, then confronted the Palestinian and American dual national – but he ‘responded by grunting’ and exposed himself to another passenger, a court heard.
Father-of-nine Hamad, who runs a family petrol station in New Orleans, was handed a six-week jail sentence at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Friday, suspended for one year, after he admitted assault by beating.
Prosecutor Wendy Barrett said the incident unfolded about six hours into the British Airways BA224 flight on October 10.
Reading a statement from Mr Vilmenay, she said: ‘He explains he was travelling with his wife and two children, aged eight and five, he had just taken his daughter to the bathroom and returned to his seat.’
Mr Vilmenay, who was not in court, added in the statement: ‘After about five minutes a male, Mr Hamad, came down the aisle to me, directly to my chair where I was sitting with my kids.
‘My daughter was awake and my son was asleep. This male had his penis out and exposed within three inches of my face.
‘At this time I felt shocked and then attempted to stand up and shouted at the male, ‘what are you doing?’
He said Hamad refused to put his penis away and ‘responded by grunting’ before exposing it to another passenger.
Mr Vilmenay said: ‘At this moment he used the back of his right hand and slapped me in the chest with some force.
‘I was very concerned by what he might do to me and my family and the other passengers around us.’
Cabin crews were alerted to the incident on Aisle 23 and were forced to take Hamad to the back of the aircraft where he was guarded for the rest of the flight.
Miss Barrett said: ‘Mr Vilmenay sat back down and was concerned obviously about his daughter being exposed to this behaviour.
‘Cabin crew, once alerted, approached Mr Hamad. He had to be escorted to another part of the plane.
‘Other passengers were moved from the very back row.
‘Because of his behaviour a member of the flight crew stayed with him for the remaining period of the flight. Mr Vilmenay, he was made to feel angry, upset.’
His statement added: ‘At the time I was shocked and felt threatened, I was very concerned for my son, daughter and wife.’

Kim & Kanye Get Presidential Welcome in Uganda
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are apparently making this a thing … meeting with heads of states.
Kimye met with the President of Uganda Yoweri K. Museveni Monday during their trip to Africa. The President tweeted, “I welcome American entertainment stars Kanye West and @KimKardashian to Uganda. I held fruitful discussions with the duo on how to promote Uganda’s tourism and the arts.”
The Prez went on … “I thank Kanye for the gift of white sneakers. Enjoy your time in Uganda. It is the true pearl of Africa.”
This meeting, of course, comes on the heels of Kanye’s meeting in the Oval with President Trump … where the American Prez also scored a pair of Yeezys.
As we’ve reported … Kanye’s in Africa working on his next album. Big Sean‘s there too. They’ll be producing music and shooting some videos during the trip.
And, while it seems like strictly business for Ye, he’s brought North and Kim along for the trip too.

Air India flight attendant falls from plane
An Air India flight attendant has been injured after falling from the door of a parked aeroplane at India’s Mumbai airport.
Harsha Lobo was preparing the flight for boarding to Delhi on Monday morning when the incident happened.
Ms Lobo, 52, suffered a fracture and other injuries and has been taken to a hospital.
Air India, the country’s national carrier, said in a statement that it was investigating the incident.
“In an unfortunate incident, one of our cabin crew (members), Harsha Lobo, fell down on the tarmac from the Boeing-777 aircraft door while closing it,” the airline said.
Doctors attended to Ms Lobo at the Mumbai airport before sending her to the hospital.
“She is conscious and well-oriented but has sustained compound (open) fracture of right lower leg bones and multiple blunt injuries,” an airport official was quoted as saying by The Hindu newspaper.
Last week, an Air India plane travelling from the southern Indian city of Trichy to Dubai sustained damage after hitting the airport wall during take off.
The plane, which was carrying 130 passengers and six crew members, was diverted to Mumbai, where it landed safely.
The incident came weeks after more than 30 passengers aboard an aircraft of Indian carrier Jet Airways had to receive treatment after pilots “forgot” to turn on a switch regulating cabin pressure.

Judge loses it after NYCHA lawyers shift lead poisoning blame to residents
NYCHA residents should have known that their kids would get lead poisoning in the city’s public housing complexes — just look at how crummy the apartments are, the scandal-scarred agency’s lawyers bizarrely claim in new court documents.
The assertion surfaced in Manhattan federal court Thursday — and made a judge go ballistic.
“Are you really asserting that people who go into NYCHA housing are assuming the risks? Tell me how a lawyer can responsibly assert such a claim,” Judge William Pauley III raged at the agency’s lawyers.
The jurist was reacting to court papers that the New York City Housing Authority filed on Sept. 27 in response to a class-action lawsuit by Sherron Paige and two other moms who say their public housing apartments gave their kids lead poisoning.
The authority claimed in the documents that the dilapidated conditions in NYCHA housing “are of an open, obvious and apparent nature . . . and plaintiffs willingly and voluntarily assumed all such risks.”
NYCHA lawyer Peter Kurshan defended the victim-blaming claim in court, calling the argument an “appropriate” move so early in the case.
Pauley wasn’t having it.
“You know what it is? It’s the kitchen sink. It’s just throwing in the kitchen sink,” he said.
He ordered the lawyers to amend the motion, warning, “Otherwise, I’m going to consider sanctions.”
He gave the lawyers a week to fix it but said it should only take an hour because “all you have to do is hit the delete button.”
NYCHA’s defense comes four months after federal prosecutors accused it in a lawsuit of repeatedly misleading tenants and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development about the presence of lead and its failure to conduct inspections.
“NYCHA falsely told HUD and the public that NYCHA ‘complies with federal, state and city regulations concerning lead,’ ” prosecutors wrote.
“But during this entire period, NYCHA was substantially out of compliance with important lead-paint regulations.”
Not only did NYCHA officials lie to the public and regulators about compliance with lead regulations, they often failed to even provide residents with required written disclosures about potential lead in apartments, prosecutors allege.
“Although NYCHA developments do make some of the disclosures required by the Lead Disclosure Rule, NYCHA management knows they do not consistently comply fully with the regulation,” prosecutors said.
The federal suit was filed June 11 and settled by the city the same day. As part of the deal, City Hall agreed to potentially spend an additional $2.2 billion over 10 years to fix crumbling public housing developments.
“The judge correctly pointed out our counsel should not have included the ‘boilerplate’ defenses, including assumption risk, and our counsel will be amending our defense,” said authority spokesman Jasmine Blake. “NYCHA has made it clear that, as we move forward with our new leadership, we are committed to meeting all of our obligations in order to better serve residents.”

Professor offered me good grades to sleep with him
CUNY just can’t seem to keep pervy profs off the payroll.
In a shocking Brooklyn federal court lawsuit, a female undergraduate claims her human-anatomy professor at LaGuardia Community College, Hany Fam, offered her good grades for sex.
The case comes on the heels of bombshell allegations that professors at CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice raped and tried to pimp out students and used and sold drugs on campus. The widening scandal, now being probed by the Manhattan D.A.’s office and the state Inspector General, was first revealed last month by The Post.
In the lawsuit, the 40-something student, going by the pseudonym Jane Doe, claims she asked Fam for a meeting in October 2017 to discuss grades. The prof, 60, insisted they meet at her apartment, court papers say.
“Fearing that she would offend her professor and perhaps jeopardize her grade in his class, [she] finally relented,” the suit says.
Fam arrived at her Brooklyn apartment and gave her a bottle of wine and a kiss on the cheek, court papers say. He sat on the couch and told her he was “lonely” and had “problems in his marriage,” the suit claims.
He “unbuttoned his shirt to reveal a scar and claimed to have a heart condition that left him with just a few years to live,” the suit says.
The student “got up and went to the kitchen, but Professor Fam followed her, leaned in to hug her, and told her to relax,” court papers say.
After pouring two glasses of wine — which the woman claims she refused to drink — Fam “said that he could make things much easier for her, and repeatedly asked if she would be his ‘friend,’” court papers say.
When the woman asked if “friend” was code for “sex,” he confirmed it was, according to the lawsuit.
“He suggested they meet once a week and told [her] it wouldn’t be ‘that hard’ for her because of his heart condition,” court papers say.
Taking his pitch one step further, Fam said other professors have similar arrangements with students, according to the lawsuit.
When the student made “unambiguous . . . expressions of disinterest,” the prof “became aggravated and told Plaintiff that she was too uptight,” the lawsuit says.
On his way out, Fam handed her “what appeared to be questions and answers for the following day’s scheduled quiz and told [her] to think about his offer.”
The woman did not return to Fam’s class and reported him to the college’s Title IX office, which handles sexual harassment complaints.
The college concluded that Fam “offered [her] a good grade … in exchange for sexual favors,” according to the lawsuit.
A LaGuardia spokeswoman told the Post the professors’s last day in the classroom was the day the student’s complaint was filed, Nov. 7, 2017, and that he was terminated on Jan. 11, 2018. He is “not eligible to work at LaGuardia any time in the future,” said spokeswoman Elizabeth Streich.
The public college located in Long Island City, which offers two-year associates degrees, also agreed to provide counseling for the woman, cover the costs of her course materials and re-enrollment in the class, but did not remove her “withdrawal” from the class on her transcript.
The woman — who is being represented by Carrie Goldberg, the Brooklyn lawyer backing at least two Harvey Weinstein accusers — claims her life has taken a dark turn because of the “emotional stress” of the ordeal. She “has even felt unsafe in her own home because Professor Fam knows where she lives,” the suit says.
The plaintiff told the Post she wants to maintain her anonymity because she is “scared of the repercussions.
“He’s obviously not a nice person, so I don’t know what lengths he might go to. It’s scary for a single woman who lives alone.”
She is seeking unspecified damages and a jury trial.
Court papers also claim Fam was part of a “wider culture of similar behavior by LaGuardia professors.”
In a review for Fam on the Rate My Professor website, a student wrote in October 2017 that he “wastes time on dirty jokes . . . I don’t know how to respect a professor who cracks dirty jokes all the time.”
Fam has been a lecturer at LaGuardia Community College and an adjunct associate professor at CUNY’s York College in Queens since at least 2012, according to SeeThroughNY. He earned $35,000 last year from LaGuardia and $14,000 from York.
Fam could not be reached for comment.

Woman let bandits into home so they could rob her husband
A Brooklyn man’s estranged wife set him up to be robbed by three masked thieves in a violent home-invasion robbery, police and sources said.
The 41-year-old man was in his apartment on Livonia Avenue near Mother Gaston Boulevard in Brownsville at about 2:40 p.m. on Saturday when his wife stopped by to pick up a bag of her clothes, cops said.
The man went to the bathroom, and when he came out, he saw her holding the door open for three men with bandannas covering their faces, police sources said.
One of the men was holding a black handgun, the sources said. The trio of robbers then punched and kicked the man, while his estranged wife shouted: “Look under the bed!” police sources said.
The robbers grabbed a lockbox with about $550 in cash from underneath the bed, cops said.
“That’s what you get for f–king with me,” the woman shouted at her husband before she and the robbers ran out of the apartment, police sources said.
“Love hurts,” a police source said.
The woman has not been caught, but police are searching for her, authorities said.
