Noose images displayed in Long Island classroom as ‘back to school necklaces’

News & Info

ROOSEVELT, L.I. — A Nassau County school district is investigating reports that a picture of nooses labeled “back to school necklaces” was displayed in a middle school classroom.

Arthur Mackey Jr., a pastor at Mount Sinai Baptist Church Cathedral in Roosevelt, said he received the image — which is part of a larger collage reportedly displayed in a classroom — from a teacher in the school system. He posted it on Facebook and called on the school district to take action.

“When I heard about it I said that this is outrageous,” Mackey told CNN. “The majority of students are minority students, African-American and Hispanic. For the image to be on the wall … is totally unacceptable.”

In a statement, the Roosevelt School District said it is aware of the “inappropriate conduct” and investigating. The school district said it is unable to comment further, calling the incident a “personnel matter.”

“The Board of Education has zero tolerance for the display of racially offensive images,” the district’s statement said.

CNN has not confirmed who sent the photo to Mackey, who created and put up the poster nor how long it had been on display.

Mackey says it is a “hate crime and racial discrimination,” for which those responsible should be punished.

More than half of the middle school’s population is Hispanic or Latino; about 45 percent is black or African American, according to the New York State Education Department.

Many people in the community are employed by schools in the district, Mackey said.

The district “cannot condone racism,” he said. “We have a great school superintendent, school board president and school board and we all believe in our hearts they are going to do the right thing.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen released a statement saying: “Teachers should be held to a higher standard… A clear message needs to be sent that there is simply no place in our schools and in our society for this type of racist, hateful and insensitive imagery.”

Mackey said as soon as he began spreading the word, he received an overwhelming response from fellow community members who wanted action taken against whomever put up the poster.

Oregon Teacher Pleads Guilty to Rape After Being Caught in Bed With 15-Year-Old Boy by Husband

News & Info

An Oregon teacher has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for the third-degree rape of a 15-year-old student.

Andrea Baber, 30, pleaded guilty to six counts of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor and three counts of third-degree rape, PEOPLE confirms.

As part of the plea deal, she will serve two years of post-prison supervision after her prison sentence. She must also register as a sex offender.

Baber had been an English teacher at Logos Christian Academy in Springfield prior to her December 2017 arrest. At the time of her arrest, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office issued a press statement saying Baber had initiated a sexual relationship with the student in 2016 that continued “on a regular basis” and involved Baber providing the teen with marijuana and alcohol.

Police were made aware of the relationship after the victim’s father called investigators. According to police, the victim’s family members received an anonymous email suggesting that the teen and Baber had been intimate. The email allegedly contained several photo attachments showing the teacher in bed with the teen.

Court documents obtained by PEOPLE at the time stated that on Dec. 5, Baber and the student were caught in bed by Baber’s husband. He made a report to Child Protective Services, according to the affidavit.

Baber was originally charged with rape, sodomy, contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor, online sexual corruption of a minor and unlawful delivery of marijuana to a person under 18 years of age. Under the plea agreement, many of the charges were dropped.

Baber has been booked into the Douglas County Jail, PEOPLE confirms. She will spend her 20-month prison center in a facility within the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Mom carries dying baby to term to donate organs

News & Info

A Tennesee mother made the brave decision to carry her dying baby to term in order to donate her daughter’s organs, a report said Thursday.

When mother Krysta Davis, 23, was 18 weeks pregnant, doctors told her that her daughter, Rylei, would not live more than 30 minutes after birth, so they gave her two options of either inducing labor immediately or carrying the baby to term and donating the organs, People reported.

Rylei was diagnosed with an abnormality called anencephaly, a rare condition in which an infant is missing parts of the brain or skull, the report said.

“We decided that even if we couldn’t bring our daughter home, no mother would have to go through what we were going to go through,” Davis, of Cleveland, Tenn., told the magazine.

Rylei was born on Christmas Eve and died on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s like she was fighting to give us more time. It was amazing,” the mother said of her daughter.

“She surprised everyone by being alive for that week.”

Rylei donated two heart valves that will go to two children in need, while her lungs will be donated for research and development on treatment for anencephaly, Tennessee’s WTVC-TV reported.

Davis and boyfriend Derek Lovett, 26, shared their journey with Rylei on a Facebook page titled, “Rylei Arcadia: An Unexpected Journey.”

Mom throws gender reveal party for 20-year-old son

News & Info

When Adrian Brown told his mother that he was transgender and wanted to transition from female to male, Heather Lundberg Green didn’t know how to support her son.

“When he told me he was transitioning, I was determined to support him through his journey, but I had no idea how,” Green, who’s based in Louisville, Kentucky, wrote in a blog for Love What Matters. “I have always had many friends in the LGBTQ community and still I wasn’t sure what steps I should take as his mother, or even what an appropriate response was outside of ‘I still love you.’”

But she had a clever idea: Throw a gender reveal party to celebrate her son’s 20th birthday. Green coordinated an elaborate photo shoot for her son, where she swaddled him with a white blanket inscribed with “It’s a boy!”

She shared the photos on her Facebook page, which quickly became a social media sensation and attracted more than 10,000 likes.

“My kids are used to me coming up with these harebrained schemes all the time,” Green told WAVE. “He was like, ‘You’re crazy, but yes,’ of course, which was a fair reaction.”

Brown first came out to his 17-year-old brother Lucas in September, and his younger sibling was extremely supportive.

“[Brown] asked what he would think if he changed his name to Adrian and Lucas’s response was that he’d have to change his name tag at work,” Green told The Washington Post.

Green’s online community has been equally supportive of Brown’s transition.

“So glad you are you and teaching the world to see you for who you are,” wrote one user.

“I’m so proud and have all the feels, even though I’ve never met Adrian,” wrote another user.

And Brown’s story is even saving lives. Brown told USA Today that Lucas shared with him a heart-wrenching story about one of his classmates.

“He proceeded to tell me that a trans boy at his school had come out to his parents after seeing our post,” Brown said. “He had been considering suicide before coming out to them and because of our message he had the courage to tell them and found out that his parents were going to support them. He would not have had the courage had we not taken these photos.”

I was sexually harassed by 3 professors who docked my grades

News & Info

A former psychology student at The College of New Rochelle claims three professors there sexually harassed her, including one who sent her a selfie of his penis, but school officials took no action.

Instead, she got thrown off campus, she alleges.

Yvonne Taylor, 43, filed suit in Brooklyn Supreme Court, saying the three instructors made sexual demands in and outside the classroom, saying her grades suffered when she refused.

Taylor, a divorced mother of three, says the alleged abuse began in the fall of 2016 in professor Bryan Boatswain’s digital literacy course, according to court papers.

In a text message on April 11, 2017, Boatswain allegedly told her: “I’m thinking about you naked,” according to Taylor.

Boatswain denied the allegations.

Another professor, Hassan Shabazz, told Taylor he was attracted to her and that “he wanted to take me on vacation,” Taylor claims.

She got a B+ in his forensic psychology course, and Shabazz told her later that had she allowed him to perform oral sex on her, “I would have gotten an A,” Taylor told The Post.

Shabazz admitted to “flirting” with Taylor but denied the claim that he docked her grade.

The third professor, Jeffrey Davis, once said, “if there weren’t surveillance cameras pointing directly at him he would ‘bend her over’ and ‘take her,’” Taylor’s suit alleges.

He also texted Taylor photos of his penis, she alleges.

Davis could not be reached.

She says she stopped attending Davis’s classes in December and complained to another professor she trusted, Timothy Rodgers.

She says Rodgers agreed to let Taylor finish her courses online, then called security and had her escorted off the campus.

Not being able to attend classes in person hurt her grade point average, and she barely missed graduating with honors, Taylor said.

College spokeswoman Lenore Carpinelli declined to comment.

Groom accused of sexually assaulting a minor, starting fights on his wedding night

News & Info

BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. (WPMT) — Police in Northampton Township, Bucks County have accused the groom at a November 2018 wedding of sexually assaulting a minor who was working as a waitress at the country club where his reception was held, then engaging in a drunken fight with another member of the club’s staff.

Matthew Ronald Aimers, 31, of Willingboro, New Jersey, is charged with false imprisonment of a minor, corruption of minors, two counts of indecent assault, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct, and two counts of harassment for his alleged behavior with the minor, and simple assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, harassment, and public drunkenness for his alleged conduct later in the evening, charging documents say.

According to Northampton Township Police, officers were dispatched to the Northampton Valley Country Club at 8:19 p.m. on Nov. 24, 2018, for the report of a fight. While police were speaking to the club’s manager about the initial report, a second fight broke out at the club’s entrance, according to the criminal complaint.

Police responded to find the groom, later identified as Aimers, pushing and punching people near the entrance. Aimers then left the club entrance and tried to get in a shuttle parked in the parking lot, ignoring police commands to stop and put his hands behind his back, the criminal complaint says. Police followed Aimers onto the shuttle, where he was “verbally confrontational” with an officer and continued to ignore police commands.

Aimers eventually exited the bus and confronted police again, according to the criminal complaint. After a short struggle with police, he was taken into custody.

Police later learned that Aimers had started the fight that prompted the initial police call, according to the criminal complaint. He allegedly got into a fight with a club employee who tried to stop him from taking alcohol outside the reception hall onto country club grounds, police say. During that fight, he allegedly punched the employee before both men fell to the ground.

On Nov. 25, 2018, police say, they learned of an incident involving Aimers and a juvenile employee at the country club the night before.

According to police, the juvenile told an officer that Aimers sexually assaulted her during the wedding reception, while she was working as a server.

The victim said that during the reception, Aimers approached her and asked her to go outside with him to make out, according to the criminal complaint. Aimers allegedly told the girl, “We can do whatever you want.”

The girl said she declined his offer, but was shaken by the encounter.

Later in the event, the victim said, she was told by event staff to check the ladies bathroom to ensure it was well-supplied. When she went in the ladies room, the victim told police, Aimers allegedly followed her inside, grabbed her arm, pulled her into one of the bathroom stalls, and closed the door, the criminal complaint states.

Aimers then allegedly began kissing the girl and rubbing her genitals with his fingers over her pants, the victim told police. Neither of these actions were welcomed by the victim, the girl told police.

When Aimers began attempting to unbutton her pants, the victim said, she grabbed his hands and pushed them away. Aimers then exposed his penis and began rubbing it against the girl’s genitals, she told police. He allegedly tried to get the girl to touch his penis, while asking her to kiss him “like you mean it.”

He also allegedly propositioned the girl with the offer of $100, police say.

The girl eventually managed to push her way out of the bathroom stall and fled from the scene, she told police.

Aimers is free after posting $100,000 bail, according to court documents.
