Patient kills other patient over loud radio at Arizona psychiatric facility

News & Info

PHOENIX – Phoenix police say an 83-year-old man is dead after getting into a fight with another patient at the Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center Tuesday morning.

Authorities were called to the psychiatric facility at the Arizona State Hospital around 7:32 a.m.

Police said Donald Prather got into an argument with a patient in the room next door about his radio being too loud.

Robert Wayne Fleming, 58, struck Prather several times and he fell to the ground unconscious, and struck his head on the floor.

Prather was taken to the hospital where he later died, said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

The Arizona Department of Health Services issued the following statement late Tuesday night:

The Arizona Department of Health Services notified the Phoenix Police Department about an incident involving two individuals at the Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center (ACPTC) and is cooperating with authorities as they conduct the criminal investigation. The ACPTC provides treatment and housing for individuals who have committed a sexually violent offense, completed their mandatory sentence with the Arizona Department of Corrections, and are deemed unsafe to return to the community based on their status as a sexually violent person with a high likelihood to reoffend. These individuals are court ordered to our facility through a petition process by the county prosecutor.

Fleming was booked into the Maricopa County Jail where he is facing second-degree murder charges.

A mailman was shot dead after he tried to stop a fight between a teen and his mom

News & Info

Police are looking for a New Mexico teenager who they say shot and killed a postal worker who tried to break up an argument between the teen and his mother.

Xavier Zamora, 17, of Albuquerque, is wanted on a murder charge, accused of killing mail carrier Jose Hernandez on Monday afternoon.

Hernandez was working his route in southwest Albuquerque when he saw Zamora in a dispute with Zamora’s mother outside their house, and decided to help her de-escalate the fight, Albuquerque police say.

Hernandez sprayed Mace on Zamora when the teen became aggressive toward him, police say, citing an interview with the mother.

The teen then went into his house, came back outside with a gun and shot Hernandez in the abdomen before going back inside, according to police.

Someone tried to resuscitate Hernandez, but the 47-year-old mail carrier and Army veteran eventually died of his wound, police say.

Police were called, and SWAT officers surrounded the house. Although no one had seen Zamora leave before officers arrived, officers eventually learned Zamora had fled, police said.

Zamora is 6 feet tall, has brown hair and brown eyes, and weighs 165 pounds, according to a warrant issued for his arrest.

Everyone in the neighborhood knew the mail carrier, a resident says

Virtually everyone in the neighborhood knew Hernandez as their mail carrier, a man who lives in the area told CNN affiliate KOAT.

“Jose was a very special guy — he was not your ordinary mailman,” Michael Shepherd told KOAT. “He’d go out of his way. He would talk to you.”

By Tuesday, people had left flowers and notes outside the house in Hernandez’s memory, KOAT reported.

“To a great mail carrier who sacrificed his life for the greater good,” one note written by a colleague reads. “We will all remember you.”

Hernandez, a carrier from the city’s Five Points post office, worked for the US Postal Service for 12 years, the agency said.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of such a tragic death of one of our own employees and coworkers,” Postal Service spokesman Rod Spurgeon said. “He served his community with dedication and was a decorated Army veteran.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. The Postal Service is offering employee assistance services to his family and coworkers.”

The shooting has shaken the city, Mayor Tim Keller said.

“We are grieving with the family of the victim, and with the entire postal service family,” Keller said. “While we are working to get answers to the many remaining unanswered questions, we know we must, and will continue to, fight against the gun violence that has taken a terrible toll on our community. Fighting crime will remain our top priority.

“Albuquerque, please take some time in the next few days to personally make sure your local letter carrier knows how much you appreciate them, and give them your love and support.”

Nursing home worker recorded sex act with 78-year-old man she scammed, prosecutors say

News & Info

NEW BERLIN, Wis. — A Wisconsin woman is accused of scamming an elderly man. Investigators say 25-year-old Shatarra Rodgers stole from the victim and even recorded a video of the two engaged in a sex act.

What began as a caring relationship, quickly took a more sinister turn. Prosecutors say 25-year-old Shatarra Rodgers met her 78-year-old victim at a New Berlin nursing home while she was caring for his wife.

According to a criminal complaint, the two became intimate after the man’s wife died in late 2018.

A few months later, the 78-year-old man noticed money missing from his bank account. When he confronted Rodgers, she apparently told him she “needed it.”

As the victim continued to ask for his money back, the only response was a text message and a video of the two engaging in a sex act. The victim said he never knew he was being recorded and immediately went to police.

Prosecutors say Rodgers was caught on surveillance at the PNC Bank on Port Washington Road in Mequon, cashing a $200 check that was stolen from the victim. Rodgers was also captured on camera at the Waukesha County Courthouse, using the victim’s credit card to pay a bond.

Records show more than $1,000 had been stolen paying for rent, a spa visit and items off Amazon.

Rodgers has been charged with multiple felonies including identity theft and capturing an intimate representation without consent. If convicted of all charges, she faces a maximum of more than 30 years in prison.

Man gets 10 years for shooting Bronx boy celebrating his 5th birthday in the head

News & Info

CLAREMONT, the Bronx — A 5-year-old boy spent several weeks in a medically induced coma, breathing through a ventilator, after he was shot in the head in the Bronx.

Michael Quiles, the man who shot Jaheem Hunter on June 5, 2017, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison,  Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said. He was found guilty of weapon possession.

“The young victim miraculously survived a gunshot to the head but continues to struggle with the injuries,” Clark said. “An innocent child’s life has been utterly changed.”

Quiles argued with two men near 167th Street and Washington Avenue on the day of the shooting. They had knives. Quiles, who was on parole at the time for an attempted kidnapping charge, fired multiple times.

One shot hit Hunter. He was out with his dad to celebrate his birthday at the time. Hunter underwent several major surgeries after the shooting.

13-year-old girl on life support 2 days after fight near middle school

News & Info

HOUSTON (KTRK/CNN) – A 13-year old girl is on life support at Texas Children’s Hospital two days after a fight near her Houston middle school.

Mamie Jackson told KTRK-TV that two girls attacked her daughter, Kashala Francis, after school on Thursday. The mom said a third girl later jumped in the fight and kicked Kashala in the head.

Jackson said it happened down the street from Attucks Middle School, where her daughter attends. When Kashala came home, she had a bruise on her face but insisted she was okay, the mother said.

By Sunday, Kashala became weak and complained to her mother about a painful headache.

“I told her to get up. I said ‘Get up, Kashala.’ She kept saying, ‘Mama, my head hurt,’ so she laid down,” Jackson said.

That was the last time she saw her daughter’s eyes open. Jackson said by the time first responders arrived the 13-year-old was unconscious. They rushed her to Texas Children’s Hospital, where she is fighting for her life.

“We found out she has a large tumor in the back of her head, and she had fluid buildup in her brain,” Jackson said.

The tumor was unbeknownst to the family before doctors discovered it Sunday.  It’s too early to tell whether the fight contributed to Kashala’s declining health or if this was solely a pre-existing medical condition.

Houston police are investigating the fight, and the Houston Independent School District said it’s cooperating with the investigation.

“The district is aware that several Attucks Middle School students were involved in an off-campus altercation on Thursday,” HISD said in a statement. “HISD is gathering information and cooperating with the Houston Police Department in its investigation.”

Couple furious after dealership ‘gave away’ the car they left for servicing

News & Info

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A couple is furious at a Sacramento County car dealership after they say their vehicle was stolen right off the lot.

“We dropped off our vehicle for service for the A/C because it’s starting to get warm in Sacramento,” Steve Russell said.

Last Friday, Steve and his wife Trish left their 2017 Ford Fusion at the Future Ford dealership on Madison Avenue near Interstate 80 and saw something that made them feel uneasy.

“The employee left the vehicle unlocked. He had the keys with him,” Steve said. “About two hours later, we were called and someone said that our vehicle had been stolen from the lot.”

The California Highway Patrol says a woman had come into the dealership with her boyfriend, leaned into the Russells’ Fusion without telling him and grabbed the identification tag. Investigators say the woman used the tag to claim to be the owner of the vehicle.

An employee handed the woman the keys, the CHP said, without asking for identification.

“When the police contacted her to ask, ‘Why did you steal the car?’ She actually said, ‘I didn’t steal it, it was given to me,'” Trish Russell said. “Which is actually true. The keys were handed to this woman.”

The CHP says the car was later recovered. The woman was not arrested, officers said, but has been charged with grand theft auto.

Meanwhile, the Russells say their Fusion had significant damage to its front left tire and the inside was trashed.

The Russells feel the dealership should have done more to prevent this.

“It took them an hour and a half to contact me. Like everybody else, our garage remote and our address was in the vehicle. So my fear was they took my car and now they’re robbing us as well,” Trish said.

The dealership’s general manager told KTXL that because their insurance is involved, he has been advised not to comment. The Russells said the dealership told them they will cover the costs of the damage done to the car while it was stolen.

Still, the Russells feel the dealership should beef up its security.

“Came the next day to trade in our loaner and would see again and again service techs bring vehicles up and walk away from them,” Trish said. “Even when questioned, ‘Why would you do that when somebody had just stolen a car from there?’ they just shrugged and kept on walking.”

The CHP says the boyfriend of the suspected thief had no idea she was stealing a car.

Officers say he was actually here to legitimately buy a car and he did stick around for the officers to arrive.

Toddler stuck ‘used condom’ from McDonald’s in mouth: report

News & Info

A McDonald’s customer in Australia says she was “sickened” to find her 2-year-old daughter stuck a “used condom” she found at the chain in her mouth, according to a report.

The little girl’s mom — who only wanted to be identified as Wendy — said her daughter now requires STD testing after the incident Friday night at the fast-food joint in Perth, the local 10 daily reported.

“I don’t know how it happened but when my husband next looks at her, she’s sucking on a black condom,” Wendy said. “I ran into the bathrooms, washed her mouth and hands and came out and gave her a drink.”

The couple said they rushed their daughter to a doctor — who suggested they retrieve the condom from the restaurant for testing, according to 10 daily.

But the McDonald’s reportedly refused to give the condom back to them.

“What if there is an STD there and my daughter is going to get it? We have to wait two months to do a blood test on her,” the mom said.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said the restaurant was investigating the incident.

“We are very sorry that the incident occurred, and take situations like this seriously,” the rep said. “Cleanliness and safety are our top priorities and we ensure the shift manager on duty conducts what we refer to as a travel path every 30 minutes.”
