Mom charged after leaving baby to die in car while she went ‘dumpster diving’
An Alabama mom was reportedly charged with murder in the death of her 13-month-old baby who she left alone in a car for 8 hours on Saturday.
Elizabeth Anne Case, 36, took her son with her about 10 p.m. Friday while she was “dumpster diving” in Limestone and Madison counties, according to AL.com.
Case, who has a history of drug use, returned to her East Limestone Road home at about 5:40 a.m. Saturday and left her child inside the locked car, the report said.
Later that day around 1:30 p.m., the infant’s grandmother came over and woke up Case when she couldn’t find her grandson.
They found the baby inside the car and Case placed him into the shower before the grandmother called 911.
The duo then took the boy into the car and met local police at a nearby recreation center.
The baby was declared dead at Athens-Limestone Hospital.
Before her murder charge, police said the Case had been out on bail for a robbery charge.

College student pleads guilty to killing bestie, says she was ‘doing cocaine with the devil’
A Virginia college student told police she was “doing cocaine with the devil” when she flew into a psychotic rage and fatally knifed her best friend and roommate more than 30 times, a report said.
Luisa Ines Tudela Harris Cutting, 21, pleaded guilty on Monday to the Jan. 24 slaying of Alexa Cannon and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the Roanoke Times reported.
Cutting admitted to stabbing Cannon to death in the off-campus apartment that the two students shared near Radford University in Southern Virginia.
Cutting had been binging on a cocktail of drugs — including cocaine, mushrooms, Adderall, Xanax and marijuana, according to the report.
During her confession to police, Cutting allegedly spouted rambling statements about the apocalypse and said the Hail Mary prayer a number of times in Spanish, according to the report.
She also repeatedly tried to shove her entire hand in her mouth, the newspaper reported.
During her sentencing Monday, Cutting offered a brief statement, asking for forgiveness and expressing regret for the killing.
“There are no words for this tragedy and my heart is filled with sorrow and grief,” she said.
Prior to the killing, Cannon shared glowing social media posts about Cutting, saying she was her best friend.
A post on Cannon’s Facebook page from July 2018 read: “So incredibly proud of my best friend, Luisa Cutting for becoming Latinos Student Alliance’s President! I know you’re going to be amazing with everything you do! Love you more!!”
“Love you so so much,” Cutting wrote in response to Cannon’s Facebook post.

Utah man accused of sodomizing 11-year-old girl while giving her tattoo
SALT LAKE CITY — A 24-year-old man was arrested Sunday after police said an 11-year-old girl told them the man sodomized her while giving her a tattoo, KUTV reported.
KUTV reported a concerned grandmother contacted police after her granddaughter said another girl had been assaulted by Michael Easley.
Police said the victim initially denied anything happened. Her friend said they were at Easley’s home and that the man had been giving the 11-year-old a tattoo. The girl eventually told police she had gone to his house for marijuana and cigarettes, according to the probably cause statement.
Easley is facing charges of sodomy on a child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and unlawful tattooing of a minor, police said. He is currently being held without bail.

Alex Trebek says his pancreatic cancer may mean the end of his time at ‘Jeopardy!’
After months of battling pancreatic cancer, Alex Trebek is hinting that his long tenure as host of “Jeopardy!” may be nearing an end.
Trebek told CTV he has begun to get sores inside his mouth from the chemotherapy, which makes it difficult to enunciate. He sometimes hears himself slurring his words on the quiz show, he said.
“I will keep doing it (the show) as long as my skills do not diminish, and they have started to diminish,” he told CTV’s Lisa LaFlamme in an interview Friday.
As “Jeopardy!” host, Trebek has graced millions of living rooms for 35 years and more than 8,000 episodes — the most by a presenter of any single TV game show.
In March, he announced that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which has a 5-year survival rate of 9%. Last month he revealed he’d be undergoing another round of chemotherapy.
In the CTV interview, Trebek said he regrets being so public with his battle with cancer. His outspokenness about the disease has encouraged many people to lean on him as a source of strength and optimism in their own battles, even while he undergoes his own, he said.
He told LaFlamme he doesn’t think he can take on so much of others’ pain.
“I don’t know if I’m strong enough or intelligent enough to help alleviate some of that despair, so it’s tough on me,” he said.
But Trebek is facing his diagnosis head on, saying he is not afraid of death.
“The thought of the pancreatic cancer does not frighten me,” he told LaFlamme. “I’m 79 years old. So, hey, I’ve lived a good life, a full life, and I’m nearing the end of that life. I know that.”

Woman catches ‘priceless’ video of a man breaking into her car
BEAVERTON, Ore. (KPTV/Meredith) – An Oregon woman said her dash camera captured the moment a man broke into her car and then ran away after he realized he was being recorded.
The woman said she wants to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, but she wants his face to get as much attention as possible.
She said the dash camera caught the man getting into her car just after midnight Tuesday in Beaverton. After he noticed the camera, the suspect hurried out of the car.
“I laughed so hard at the shock on his face when that light came on,” the woman said. “It was priceless. I couldn’t stop laughing, I played it over and over.”
There appears to be other people outside the vehicle who also run away.
She didn’t realize she’d left the front door unlocked until she found it wide open. The glove box and center console were open too.
She said this kind of thing is exactly why she bought the camera in the first place. For anyone interested, that camera is called an Owlcam, which retails for about $300.
“You set off an alarm and it scares them away, you’ve kept your thing, but you don’t have any proof of who did what. I want to know who, so that’s why I got it,” she said. “I just wanted to make sure I got a really good look at him.”
Beaverton Police are looking into the break-in.

Texas Groom-to-Be Robs Bank Day Before Wedding Because He Couldn’t Afford Ring
A Texas man is accused of robbing a bank because he couldn’t pay for his wedding.
Heath Bumpous turned himself in on Friday, about two hours after he robbed the Citizens State Bank in Groveton, Texas — and a day before he was set to get married, according to Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace. The bank is only about 500 feet away from the sheriff’s office in the small town north of Houston.
“He basically stated that he was getting married tomorrow so he didn’t have enough money for a wedding ring that he wanted to buy and he needed to pay for the wedding venue,” Wallace said in a video message posted Friday on Facebook.
Wallace said that Bumpous went into the bank and “demanded money and indicated that he had a weapon.”
He was able to get away with an undisclosed amount of money, Wallace said.
The sheriff’s office posted pictures from the bank’s surveillance video and a description of his vehicle on social media to see if the public could identify the suspect.
Someone did — his fiancee.
She recognized him from the images and convinced him to surrender in nearby Houston County, where they live, Wallace said.
He is being held on charges of aggravated robbery. CNN was unable to contact Bumpous and county officials did not know on Monday morning if he had an attorney.
Wallace said Bumpous confessed to the robbery during questioning.
Authorities were able to recover most of the money and found a gun while processing the car, Wallace said. They also found clothes that he had thrown out of his car while making his getaway.
CNN affiliate KTRE reported that Bumpous is a former EMS employee from Crockett, Texas.
The Groveton Independent School District issued a “Lock Out” after the robbery and would not let anyone in or out of school buildings until authorities determined it was safe, according to a Nixle alert issued by the sheriff’s office.

Gov. Newsom Signs Law Allowing Pharmacists to Dispense HIV-Prevention Meds Without Prescription
Pharmacists in California will be able to dispense HIV prevention pills to patients without a doctor’s prescription after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Monday that supporters say will greatly reduce the spread of infection.
Advocates of Senate Bill 159 say California is the first state to authorize pre-exposure prophylaxis, also called PrEP, and post-exposure prophylaxis, known as PEP, without prescriptions. California is already considered a leader in HIV/AIDS prevention, they say.
PrEP is a once-daily pill for HIV-negative people while PEP is a medication that people take to prevent the virus from taking hold. Supporters say PEP significantly reduces the risk of infection, but only if started within 72 hours of exposure to the virus.
Not everyone can get to a doctor in that time frame, says Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California.
“The ability to go into a pharmacy to avail themselves of the medication is a huge improvement to removing a barrier,” he said.
He says the law will greatly improve access and help reduce the stigma around the drugs, especially in rural areas and among minorities.
The California Medical Association was initially opposed to the legislation but became neutral on it after it was amended to limit the number of PrEP pills patients can get without a physician’s note to 60 days, said Anthony York, spokesman for the association.
The association was concerned about “long-term use without physician oversight,” he said.
The law also prohibits insurance companies from requiring patients to get prior authorization before using insurance to get the drugs, eliminating another obstacle.
The bill was co-authored by state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, who has publicly disclosed that he takes PrEP as an HIV prevention strategy.
“To end new HIV infections, we must dramatically expand access to PrEP and PEP, yet far too many Californians who need these drugs struggle to access them,” he said.
Pharmacists in California are already authorized to dispense emergency contraceptives and birth control without a prescription.
Newsom also signed legislation Monday aimed at lowering the cost of prescription drugs. The new law targets so-called “pay for delay” agreements, when makers of brand-name drugs pay for makers of similar generic drugs to delay putting the products on the market.
The new law presumes such arrangements are anti-competitive and steps up enforcement to stop them.
Drug companies argue the bill will cause more delays for generic drugs by ensuring lengthy legal battles over patents.

Mother stopped possible school massacre by turning in her own son
A Washington state mom turned her 17-year-old son in to police upon finding plans in his journal to carry out a school shooting on the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre.
“It’s devastating. I know I did all I can do and that I made the right choice,” the mother, who only identified herself as Nicole, told CBS News about the decision that led to her son’s Sept. 17 arrest on harassment and bomb threat charges.
The teen, in his journal, said he’d use guns and a variety of explosives to carry out the attack on College Place High School, according to police records obtained by KTEL News.
With the weapons, he’d “blast anyone in sight” and “kill everyone possible,” some of his notebook entries read, the outlet reported.
The teen made a note to “kill self after maximum damage” in the writings.
His mother said he told her that he was just being imaginative. The entries were “just a story,” Nicole said was his response.
But Troy Tomaras, College Place police chief, wasn’t buying it.
“Well, he’s plotting to attack and kill people,” Tomaras told CBS News.
“That’s beyond creative writing. That’s beyond normal.”
Tomaras commended Nicole for speaking up.
“She’s very courageous,” he said. “It’s clearly very emotional for her. She loves her son.”

Assistant principal allegedly had sex with student for months
An assistant principal at a North Carolina high school had sex with a student six times over a four-month span, police said.
Lisa Rothwell, a 34-year-old educator at Stuart Cramer High School in Belmont, was arrested Friday for having sex and oral sex with a student between April 1 and July 31, the Gaston Gazette reported, citing arrest warrants.
Rothwell, a 10-year employee of Gaston County Schools, was ordered held on $1 million bond during a court appearance late Friday. She’s facing six counts of felony sexual activity with a student by a school employee, jail records show.
Rothwell, who earns more than $66,000 annually, taught gifted children at North Gaston High School and Stanley Middle School prior to landing her current position in 2014, the Gaston Gazette reported.
A message seeking additional comment regarding Rothwell, of Charlotte, was not immediately returned early Monday by Gaston County Schools, but her profile page on its website has been removed. She has been suspended with pay following her arrest, according to WSOC.
The alleged sex acts between Rothwell and the student occurred three times in April and three times in July, sources told the station.
Rothwell, who was emotional during her initial court appearance Friday, is scheduled to return to court Monday to seek a reduction in her bond, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Groom sexually assaulted wife’s bridesmaid before wedding
SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Penn. (WNEP/Meredith) — A groom in Pennsylvania is facing sexual assault charges after investigators say he forced himself on his wife-to-be’s bridesmaid.
Police say it happened while the wedding party and friends were celebrating before the nuptials at a resort near Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Three pictures, confirmed by a neighbor, show Daniel Carney and his now-wife, clearly as a happy couple.
But investigators in Monroe County say it was the events leading up to their wedding that have him now charged with sexual assault for allegedly forcing himself on his wife`s bridesmaid.
“Ah, that’s probably the worst thing ever, you can’t do that if you’re going to get married, not at all,” said Brett Schnatter from East Stroudsburg.
Court papers show that bridesmaid told police that the assault happened at the Shawnee Inn in Smithfield Township on August 30th as the wedding party and friends were celebrating the couple`s upcoming wedding.
According to the court papers, the group spent the day drinking alcohol and she became very drunk.
At the inn, she blacked out and woke to find herself in the men’s locker room downstairs with Carney fondling her and her bikini bottom removed.
Police say the assault stopped when the bride came into the locker room which led to a physical fight between the bride and groom.
Carney’s neighbor says they are a nice couple.
“They seemed fine, I never heard any rowdiness going on really,” said Brenda Gilbert.
Police say a review of surveillance video from the inn shows Carney pulling the woman into the locker room and she appeared to be “extremely unsteady on her feet”.
Court papers show the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office gave investigators the okay to listen in on a call between Carney and his accuser. They say during that call he repeatedly told her he was sorry, specifically saying it was his fault several times. And he admitted to leading her into the locker room.
Police say Carney admitted to investigators that he took advantage of the woman.
A friend of Carney’s says the couple did get married.
Some people find that hard to believe.
“He’s being charged?” said Sarah Mahoney. “I don’t know how she’s continuing being with him and standing by his side.”
Newswatch 16 tried to talk with the Carneys at their home but no one answered the door.
