‘Domestic abuser poured bleach in baby’s eyes while attacking her mother’

News & Info

Jehral Joseph, 34, appeared in court on Monday on charges of aggravated assault and injury to a child in connection with the violent incident in January 2019 in Houston, Texas. Authorities say Joseph told his girlfriend to ‘stop acting like a female’ before he doused her and her children with bleach. The alleged attack began in the couple’s southwest Houston apartment. Police say Joseph battered his girlfriend and slammed her into a wall, then broke her phone and punched her in the stomach when she tried to call for help. Joseph’s girlfriend reportedly tried to gather her three children to leave the apartment, which is when Joseph allegedly dumped bleach on her and her children, according to ABC News.

The bleach got into her eyes and she had trouble breathing because of the fumes, police said, adding that the bleach also got into the eyes of the victim’s seven month-old daughter. Joseph’s girlfriend told police that Joseph shouted: ‘Fuck the children, fuck them kids, fuck you and your sister,’ as he carried out the alleged attack.

All three children were taken to the hospital with itching and burning skin. Authorities did not specify the ages of the victim’s other two children. Joseph did not reportedly enter a plea in court on Monday. He has two previous convictions in Harris County, Texas for assaulting a family member.

Woman Dies After Waiting Hours in ER for Help

News & Info

It is often suggested that women, especially black women, go ignored and/or unseen due to implicit bias in the American healthcare system.

Such may have been the case for Tashonna Ward, a 25-year-old day care teacher from Milwaukee who died Jan. 2 while trying to find a doctor to help her, USA Today reported.

Ward waited for over 2 hours in the emergency room of Froedtert Hospital before leaving to find faster help. She collapsed and died shortly after and now her family is looking for answers as to why she wasn’t seen sooner after she reported severe chest pains and trouble breathing.

“How can you triage someone with shortness of breath and chest pain and stick them in the lobby?” said Ward’s cousin, Andrea Ward. “Froedtert needs to change their policy.”

According to USA Today:

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office has not determined the cause of death. Its report doesn’t say whether Ward was admitted or seen by a doctor at Froedtert before she left.

Ward’s family says she was kept in the waiting room and was not under any monitoring when she decided to leave.

Hospital staff had checked her heartbeat with an electrocardiogram, which appeared normal, according to the report. After, she was asked to stay in the waiting room until she could be admitted and seen by a doctor, according to hr family.

At 5:45 p.m., Ward posted on Facebook, “I really hope I’m not in this emergency room all night.”

At 7:35 p.m., she posted that she’d been told she might have to wait two to six hours to see a doctor. “Idk what they can do about the emergency system at freodert (sic) but they damn sure need to do something. I been here since 4:30 something for shortness of breath, and chest pains for them to just say it’s a two to SIX hour wait to see a dr.”

A chest X-ray revealed that Ward suffered from cardiomegaly: an enlarged heart.

According to USA Today, Ward had a history of this. In March, when her baby died after the umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck, Ward was told she had developed an enlarged heart during the pregnancy, according to a medical examiner’s report.

There’s no mention in the report as to whether Ward retained an enlarged heart since the pregnancy, or if it was the result of a recent flare-up. Cardiomegaly can be both temporary or permanent. In either case, it can put people at greater risk for blood clots, cardiac arrest and other heart problems.

A spokesperson for the hospital kind of, but not really, provided a statement saying, “The family is in our thoughts and has our deepest sympathy. We cannot comment further at this time.”

I’m sure their “thoughts and prayers” are of little consolation to Ward’s grieving family, although, to be fair, I’m also sure that’s all they can legally say for their own protection.

Still, one is left to wonder if this is yet another case of black women being ignored and set aside instead of receiving the medical care they sought out. There have been plenty of studies done and articles written documenting racial disparity in physicians and hospital staff’s handling of people in need of care, such as this article published by the American Bar Association last year.

What is clear is that there is still much work to be done to ensure that people of color, especially black women, are receiving proper care lest preventable tragedies like what has happened to Tashonna Ward continue.

Couple left bikes in yard to lure thieves, beat them with bats and post videos to YouTube

News & Info

VISALIA, Calif. (KTLA) – Police arrested a man and woman Wednesday who they say left a bicycle unattended in the front yard of their California home, then attacked would-be thieves who tried to steal it with baseball bats and posted videos of the assaults to YouTube in recent months.

Visalia residents Corey Cornutt, 25, and Savannah Grillot, 29, were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy in connection with the series of at least four beatings, which took place between July and November near their home, according to the Visalia Police Department.

“In the videos, it appears as if the suspects planted a bicycle in the front yard of their residence, unsecured, and waited for someone to try and steal the bicycle,” police said in a written statement.  “Once someone tried to steal the bike, the suspects would rush from the house and assault the individual with a baseball bat.”

The four victims identified in the investigation suffered injuries described as not life-threatening.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Visalia police Detective James Cummings at 559-713-4722.

Doctor pleads guilty to producing child pornography after secretly recording children’s medical exams

News & Info

(CNN) — A Denver doctor accused of secretly recording nude images of children during medical examinations pleaded guilty to child pornography charges on Friday, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

Dr. Justin Neisler is scheduled to be sentenced May 22 on charges of producing child pornography and faces 15 to 30 years in federal prison, the statement said.

“Today’s plea represents the FBI’s dedication to pursuing those that exploit children,” FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Dean Phillips said. “This case should serve as a deterrent to those who utilize their positions of trust in the victimization of children.”

In November 2018, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip that Neisler had been uploading child pornography to a social media site since October of that year. In March, authorities executed a search warrant at his home, where they found approximately 6,600 still images and 1,725 videos of child pornography from the Internet on his electronic devices, according to the statement.

Neisler admitted to authorities during the search that he had examined minors. Investigators found that unbeknownst to his patients, Neisler used a pen with a hidden camera and his phone to record them while they were undressed for medical exams, the statement said.

“There are few violations of trust worse than when a doctor takes advantage of a child in the exam room for his own sexual gratification,” US Attorney Jason Dunn said. “Thankfully, Dr. Neisler was caught and will never again be in a position to harm children under the guise of helping them.”

The children have been identified and interviewed to investigate if other offenses occurred, to address their needs and to ensure that the videos have not been distributed, according to the news release.

This playboy tortoise had so much sex he saved his entire species. Now he’s going home

News & Info

(CNN) — A womanizing tortoise whose rampant sex life may have single-handedly saved his entire species from extinction has retired from his playboy lifestyle, returning to the wild with his mission accomplished.

Diego’s unstoppable libido was credited as a major reason for the survival of his fellow giant tortoises on Espanola, part of the Galapagos Islands, after being shipped over from San Diego zoo as part of a breeding program.

When he started his campaign of promiscuity, there were just two males and 12 females of his species alive on the island.

But the desirable shell-dweller had so much sex he helped boost the population to over 2,000. The Galapagos National Parks service believe the 100-year-old tortoise is the patriarch of around 40% of that population.

“He’s contributed a large percentage to the lineage that we are returning to Espanola,” Jorge Carrion, the park’s director, told AFP. “There’s a feeling of happiness to have the possibility of returning that tortoise to his natural state.”

A total of 15 tortoises took part in the breeding program to boost the island’s population, but none played a big a role as Diego.

“About 1,800 tortoises have been returned to Espanola and now with natural reproduction we have approximately 2,000 tortoises,” Carrion told AFP.

“This shows that they are able to grow, they are able to reproduce, they are able to develop,” he said.

The Galapagos Islands are one of the world’s premier destinations for wildlife viewing, and were visited by Charles Darwin as he worked on the theory of evolution.

U.S. Mint to Release New Quarters Featuring Samoan Fruit Bats

News & Info

The United States Mint has released the final designs for the America the Beautiful Quarters program, and one of the designs depicts a Samoan fruit bat hanging in a tree with her pup.

The quarter was designed by Richard Masters, and Phebe Hemphill was the sculptor, according to the US Mint. It is being released to honor the National Park of American Samoa.

The design of the quarter is being used to raise awareness to the threatened status of Samoan fruit bats due to habitat loss and commercial hunting, according to the US Mint. Samoan fruit bats are native to the National Park of American Samoa.

Located 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, it is one of the most remote parks in the US National Park System, the US Mint says.

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program was started in 2010 by the United States Mint. Every year, 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites are released.
