Minnesota police shoot, kill man after traffic stop incident
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — The family of a 20-year-old Minnesota man told a crowd that he was shot by police Sunday before getting back into his car and driving away, then crashing the vehicle several blocks away. The family of Daunte Wright said he was later pronounced dead.
Officials from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the agency was on the scene of a shooting involving a police officer in Brooklyn Center on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Wrights demanded answers from police.
The incident, which sparked protests late into Sunday night, happened with Minneapolis already on edge and midway through the trial of the first of four police officers in George Floyd’s death. Brooklyn Center is a city with a population of about 30,000 people located on the northwest border of Minneapolis.
According to a statement from Brooklyn Center Police, officers stopped an individual shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday after determining the driver had an outstanding warrant. Police said when they tried to arrest the driver, the driver reentered the vehicle and drove away. An officer fired at the vehicle, striking the driver. Police said the vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle.
Police did not identify the driver who was shot but said the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the person’s name following a preliminary autopsy and family notification. A female passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries during the crash.
A police officer was also transported to the hospital after sustaining injuries, according to EMS audio, the Star-Tribune reported. By Sunday evening, about 100 people had gathered near the scene, according to the newspaper, but they were later dispersed.
Public mourners included Wright’s family and friends who gathered, wept and consoled each other alongside protesters who carried “Black Lives Matter” flags, jumped atop police cars, confronted officers and walked peacefully in columns with their hands help up. On one street, written in multi-colored chalk: “Justice for Duante Wright.”
Late Sunday night, Brooklyn Center police fired gas into a crowd of protesters who had gathered outside the police station. No reports of damage, injuries or arrests were immediately available.
“The officer shooting in Brooklyn Center today is tragic. We are asking the protesters to continue to be peaceful and that peaceful protesters are not dealt with force,” Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott said on Twitter.
Katie Wright, Daunte’s mother, tearfully pleaded for more information regarding the incident and for her son’s body to be moved from the street.
A woman who lives near the crash scene, Carolyn Hanson, said she saw law enforcement officers pull a man out of a vehicle and perform CPR. A passenger who got out of the car was also covered in blood, Hanson said.
Police said Brooklyn Center officers wear body-worn cameras and they also believe dash cameras were activated during the incident. The Brooklyn Center Police Department said it has asked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate.
No further information was immediately available.

Domino’s customer points gun at workers because he couldn’t get toppings on the side
A Domino’s customer in Minnesota allegedly threatened workers with a gun over a dispute about pizza toppings. Apparently, the customer wanted to get the toppings on the side and the pizzeria was unable to do so.
The incident occurred at a Domino’s in Rochester, Minn., last Sunday, My Fox 47 reports. Apparently, the customer had requested his pizza with toppings on the side and was told that the restaurant couldn’t do that.
The suspect, identified by the news outlet as 34-year-old Victor Fortner, allegedly drove up to the restaurant’s drive-thru and began arguing about the toppings. He reportedly threw several pizza slices at the workers in the restaurant.
Fortner allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at the workers before driving off.
Local police later located Fortner, who admitted to visiting the Domino’s but denied pointing a gun at the workers. Police did not find a weapon in his car. While it was initially reported that he would be facing assault charges, Fortner was instead cited for disorderly conduct.
This is just the latest violent incident to occur at a drive-thru.
Fox News previously reported that authorities in Tennessee shared images of a woman who allegedly fired a gun through a Burger King’s drive-thru window on social media. Fortunately, employees in the restaurant were reportedly able to escape through a rear doorway and no injuries were reported.
The Memphis Police Department posted about the incident on Facebook, which occurred at a Burger King in Memphis on Tuesday, March 30th.

Former Walmart employee drives into store after getting fired
A disgruntled former Walmart employee in North Carolina is accused of crashing into his old workplace and driving through the aisles, a report said.
Lacy Gentry, 32, who was fired in February, allegedly rammed into a Walmart store in Concord at about 6 a.m. on April 2, Fox 46 reported.
“He may have had some problem with the way the management was handling the issue that he had with them,” a Concord Police spokesman told the news outlet.
“If you take a car through a Walmart there’s going to be extensive damage, the aisles are wide enough so there was a lot of property damage,” the spokesman said.
The store was closed at the time Gentry allegedly drove through it. Employees were present, though nobody was injured, the report said.
Gentry is charged with breaking and entering and assault on a government official with a deadly weapon.

Woman arrested after refusing to return $1.2 million mistakenly put into her account
GRETNA, La. (AP) — A former sheriff’s dispatcher in a suburb of New Orleans has been arrested, accused of refusing to return more than $1.2 million that had been accidentally deposited into her brokerage account, authorities said.
Kelyn Spadoni, 33, was taken into custody Wednesday on charges of theft valued over $25,000, bank fraud and illegal transmission of monetary funds, nola.com and WVUE-TV reported. The reports said she was fired by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office after her arrest.
Spadoni is being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on a $50,000 bond. It was unknown if she has an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
Spadoni is accused of immediately moving the funds to another account and using some of the money to buy a new car and a house, authorities said.
Authorities said a clerical error had caused Charles Schwab, a major financial services corporation, to deposit more than $1.2 million into her brokerage account when it only meant to transfer about $82 in February, nola.com reported. When the bank attempted to reclaim the money, the request was rejected because the money was not available, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said it was later learned that Spadoni had moved the funds into another account.
Capt. Jason Rivarde, a sheriff’s spokesman, said that although the money was put into her account, “it’s not her money.”
“She has no legal claim to that money,” he added. “Even if it was put in there by mistake. It was an accounting error.”
Charles Schwab & Co. sued Spadoni on Tuesday in federal court. The company tried to contact Spadoni several times to have the transferred funds returned but were unsuccessful, Rivarde said. So far, about 75% of the money has been recovered, he added.
The company argued in its lawsuit that Spadoni’s account contract with Schwab includes an agreement that if a client receives an overpayment of funds, the client is required to return the full amount.
“If someone accidentally puts an extra zero on a utility payment, they would want that money returned or credited to them. This is no different,” Rivarde said.
He said Spadoni had been with the sheriff’s office 911 center for 4 and 1/2 years.
