Remembering Selena 23 years after her death
Saturday marks 23 years since Tejano star Selena was killed.
She died just a couple weeks shy of her 24th birthday.
Since then, her star has only continued to rise with her memory being commemorated in an array of forms from a MAC makeup collection to rumors a new TV show inspired by the late singer is being developed.
Items bearing her image tend to sell out instantly, which speaks to the hold her influence still has on fans.
We’re celebrating her life with a look at five of the things we still love about Selena.
Her Talent:
Considered the Queen of Tejano, Selena started singing at a young age in her family’s band Selena Y Los Dinos.
Fast forward to 1989 when her self-titled album was released.
She captivated audiences with her vocal range and how she incorporated cumbia dance into her music.
But she also proved she could crossover with ease to any genre.
During what would become her final show before her death, Selena performed a disco medley at the Astrodome in 1995.
Her style:
Nicknamed the Mexican Madonna for her dazzling stage outfits, Selena designed her own costumes.
Who can forget that iconic purple jumpsuit she wore during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo?
From crop tops and boleros to bedazzled bralettes and belt buckles, the star also donned hand-beaded bustiers, including one worn at her 1994 Houston Astrodome Concert.
Selena opened two boutiques, one in Corpus Christi and another in San Antonio.
The stores, equipped with full-scale beauty salons, eventually closed.
Her legacy:
Selena continues to be recognized for her work.
On Nov. 3, 2017, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Los Angeles’ mayor also declared Nov.3 Selena Day.
Fans can explore Selena’s career anytime at the museum built by her family in Corpus Christi.
The Fiesta de la Flor music festival is also held in Corpus Christi.
Her love for her fans:
Fans love Selena, but she also loved them back and not just because they listened to her music.
According to her father Abraham Quintanilla, Selena loved kids and visited schools to tell them how important it was to have an education.
She even had a stay-in-school campaign in 1994.
Today, her family runs the Selena Foundation, which helps children with their education and contribute to their lives personally and professionally.
How her success broke barriers
Selena hit many achievements during her career, including winning the Grammy Award for best Mexican-American album for Live in 1994.
This was the first time a female Tejano artist won the category.
Her 1990 album Ven Conmigo was the first Tejano record to reach gold status, selling 500,000 copies.
Despite her success, Selena also had to overcome the challenge of breaking into the male-dominated industry of Tejano music.
In an interview on her official Twitter page, she said her father had a hard time securing gigs because “many male promoters didn’t think a female artist could attract huge crowds like men do, but…. wrong.”
Her English-language album Dreaming of You was released posthumously. It was a hit, and also inspired the Selena movie.

Fantasia Barrino’s nephew shot and killed in North Carolina
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Police have identified the teen who was shot and killed Tuesday morning in Greensboro, North Carolina as the nephew of “American Idol” and Grammy-winning singer Fantasia Barrino, according to a news release.
Tyquan Vonricco Washington, 18, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the 700 block of Hyde Drive at 10:54 a.m. Washington’s father recording artist Ricco Barrino, whose real name is Kassim Vonricco Washington.
Emergency crews performed life-saving measures but Washington was pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital.
David Lee White Jr., 21, of Greensboro, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. White is charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the Guilford County Jail without bond.
Ricco Barrino posted a heartfelt love letter to his son on Instagram upon learning of his death.
Ricco Barrino’s manager said he and Washington’s mother are heartbroken.
Ricco Barrino said he knew his son had gotten into some trouble but was turning his life around, his manager said. Washington aspired to be a musician like his dad. He was even recently working on a mixtape.
Fantasia Barrino, a High Point native, rose to fame as the winner of the third season of “American Idol” in 2004 and won a Grammy for her single “Bittersweet.”
Black History Day 5: Todd Duncan
As we reach day five of Black History Month I’d like to introduce Todd Duncan. The first African American to sing on New York Broadway. Here’s one of the songs he sang, entitled Lost in the Stars
Black History Month Day 6: Bob Marley
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month is like to talk about a person whom I didn’t get a chance to talk about last year. The great musician and activist Bob Marley.
This man was not only a great musician, but was a well known activist as well, receiving the Peace Medal of the Third World, regarded as an ambassador and was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

SZA, girl, Solange Knowles Is Not Your Friend
I was watching SZA’s SNL performance of her song The Weekend, and many #MessyBetties said that they came from another video: the official video for The Weekend.
We have waited for this video ever since SZA dropped that single. And so I raced to watch the video and honestly… I enjoyed it. Even though SZA did not have a… storyline like most music videos (involving cheating significant others) I still enjoyed the interpretive dancing, the hair (I love me some SZA hair), the care free black girl aesthetic and all. When I found out the Solange Knowles directed the video it made it that much better, I was ecstatic because it was true #blackgirlmagic!
But everyone was clowning SZA in the comments section saying how this was Cranes In The Garbage, and how this is what happens when you contact the wrong Knowles sister, or even how this was Solange’s revenge for SZA’s old tweet about Beyonce:
Apparently, that was 9 years ago, when SZA was 19. I will leave it at that.
Check out Khadi Don’s hilarious parody of the music video here.
But the more likely reason why everyone felt that Solange ‘sabotaged’ SZA is that the song The Weekend is promoting side chick culture, and if Solange would beat down JayZ in the elevator for allegedly cheating on her sister then maybe she is capable of this…
The Internet, proves to be too much sometimes. I loved the video, but if everyone else thought it was strange then maybe Solange simply missed the mark on this one.
Lil’ Kim Is Back!!!
Lil’ Kim is just as provocative as before.

Gorillaz Humanz Album Review
While I’m definitely tale on this there was no way I could listen to Gorillaz’ new album without writing a review on it. The Gorillaz’ new album Humanz was released back on April 28th and was their first album release in 6 years. I for one can say that this album did not disappoint.
The thing that I love about Gorillaz is the fact that they’re not defined by one specific genre. In one song you can hear a pop tune, in another you can hear a more hip hop feel and so on. There are definitely a lot of songs on this album that I have on repeat such as, The Apprentice, She’s My Collar, Carnival, Out of Body and a few others.
It seems like the theme of this album is apocalyptic/ post apocalyptic. The creator of Gorillaz, Damon Albarn got this inspiration from all the the crazy events that have happened in the past year especially with the 2016 election. You can especially hear it in the album’s song; Hallelujah Money.
I enjoy the songs hyped up tone, like Ascension, the calm and soothing sounds of Busted and Blue, the techno and r&b sounds from The Apprentice and the outer space vibe from Andromeda.
This will definitely go down as one of the Gorillaz greatest albums in my opinion. Gorillaz: Humanz, if you haven’t listened to the album go check it out now!
Miley Cyrus Says She Doesn’t Listen To Hip-Hop Anymore, But She Likes Kendrick Lamar
When SOME of us discover Hip hop and it’s culture you NEVER look back. that’s the problem with some of these White Celebrities they think black culture is a fad and something to make money off. It’s okay for Miley to change her taste in music. I see that she is finding herself, she’s being HERSELF. SOME White children will adopted the hip hop culture and the music just to piss off their family. And when they done playing Hip hop and talking Ebonics they go right back to being Becky with the straight hair or Johnny with the buzz cut and having that great white privilege.
“Every Body Wants To Be A Nigga But Nobody Wants To Be A Nigga”

It’s been nearly two years since Miley Cyrus released the free album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz on Soundcloud and three and a half years since her last major release Bangerz in 2013, and now it appears Miley is set to make her grand return. With a new single “Malibu” waiting to be unleashed next week, Miley opened up to Billboard for the cover story of their May 13 issue and her revealing interview may open some eyes, but it’s likely to cause some to roll as well.
Miley discussed her engagement with Liam Hemsworth, her reaction to Donald Trump, her quitting….
