Elfen’s TBT R&B Funk 1984 The Gap Band VI
This week I had a hard time choosing a TBT R&B until one of my favorite R&B Funk bands of all times started playing on iPad The Gap Band. I believe The Gap Band is one of the best R&B Funk bands of the 20th century.
Group members Charlie, Ronnie and Robert Wilson giving props to their home town street Greenwood, Archer, and Pine) in the historic Greenwood neighborhood in the brothers’ hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The group shortened its name to The Gap Band in 1973. Sadly brother Robert Wilson passed away in 2010.
Hits include:
- Party Train
- Early Morning
- Oops Upside ya head
If you’re reading this and you’re a gamer You probably heard
“You Dropped a Bomb on Me” was featured in the hit 2004 videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), playing on the fictional funk radio station Bounce FM.
“Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)” was featured in DiRT 3 (2011).
“You Dropped a Bomb on Me” was featured in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Zombies In Spaceland (2016)
The Gap Band songs have been sampled by many hip hop artists like Snoop Dog.
Since the 1990s, many of The Gap Band’s hits have been sampled and covered by R&B and hip hop artists such as II D Extreme, Brand Nubian, Tyler, the Creator, 69 Boyz, Ashanti, Big Mello, Blackstreet, Mary J. Blige, Da Brat, Ice Cube, Jermaine Dupri, Mia X, Nas, Rob Base Shaquille O’Neal, Snoop Dogg, Soul For Real, and Vesta. Michael Jackson Musical Eyes 2020 Broadway Bow
Lynn Nottage has been tapped to pen the book for the musical, inspired the life of the music icon
A musical exploration of the life and catalog of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway. The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have partnered to develop a musical inspired by the pop icon; the show is expected to bow in New York in 2020.
Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Sweat, Ruined) will pen the book for the musical, which will incorporate Jackson’s myriad hits. An American in Paris Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon has been tapped to direct and choreograph.
No word yet on casting or any pre-Broadway engagements.
Jackson’s catalog has previously served as the backbone for a theatrical production with Thriller – Live, which has played the Lyric Theatre in London’s West End since January 2009. The show was initially scheduled to play a limited run, but it continued to gain popularity and interest—particularly after Jackson’s death in June that year.
Nina Simone’s Childhood Home Named National Treasure
The National Trust for Historic Preservation will “seek new protections and evaluate preservation needs” for the North Carolina house
Nina Simone’s childhood home in Tryon, North Carolina has been deemed a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. (The house had been purchased last year by four artists.) According to a press release, the National Trust—along with the home owners, the local community, the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission, and World Monuments Fund—will “seek new protections, evaluate preservation needs, and conduct market and feasibility studies to develop a sustainable new use for the home.”
Below, find photographs of the home’s interior and exterior (taken by Nancy Pierce and courtesy of the National Trust for Historic Preservation).
In other Nina Simone news, an excerpt from a new audiobook about Simone has been released. It finds Alicia Keys reading about Simone’s life for the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series. Listen below (via Entertainment Weekly).
Nina Simone was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—she was celebrated with performances by Lauryn Hill, the Roots, and Andra Day. Mary J. Blige officially inducted her.

Demi Lovato Removes All Her Makeup In Video
For those not in the know, Demi Lovato is a singer, songwriter and actress, known being a prominent champion of positive body image, who also speaks openly and honestly about her own struggles with an eating disorder and mental health.
Adding to her journey of self-acceptance and refreshingly human and positive messages to her fans, Demi has made a video called “Demi Lovato, Unfiltered: A Pop Star Removes Her Makeup,” for Vogue as part of their American Women: Transformers series. Turning the traditional makeover on its head, Demi instead gets a makeunder, as she slowly strips away her makeup to reveal the beauty underneath.
“I think society tells us we need makeovers, but why can’t we embrace the beauty that we naturally have?” She told Vogue. However, that’s not to say that she doesn’t enjoy the glamor which comes as part of her job. “I love makeup. I love doing my hair; I have extensions, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and natural beauty needs to be celebrated.”
You could argue that for a young, beautiful millionaire, going natch and looking great with it comes quite a bit easier than it does for the average woman. Some commenters certainly didn’t buy it. For others however, she remains one of the few celebrities that people can really relate to as they follow her ups and downs on social media, where she strips bare her insecurities and urges her fans to embrace themselves as they are.
Singer, songwriter and actress Demi Lovato just filmed a short clip for Vogue
But this time instead of the full makeup that she usually comes with…
And a team of makeup artists helping her out…
To achieve results like this
…she did it all in reverse
After starting with full makeup, she sat in front of the camera and started to remove it
Here’s the clip itself
Some didn’t buy it though
But others loved it

Elfen’s Neosoul Hip Hop New Music Tuesday Dead Prez Let’s Be Free
You know how this goes by now. What’s New to you is old to me. What’s old to you is new to me.
What can I say about Dead Prez album Let’s Be free? Thought provoking , fist pump, sexy militant lyrics. Album is still relavent today. As it was in 2000.
I’m gonna let Wikipedia tell their bio. Dead Prez, stylized as dead prez, is a hip hop duo from the United States, composed of stic.man and M-1, formed in 1996 in New York City. They are known for their confrontational style, combined with socialist lyrics focused on both militant social justice, Marxism, and Pan-Africanism. The duo maintains an ethical stance against corporate control over the media, especially hip hop record labels.
M-1 joined the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement in Chicago for three years, stic.man remained in Florida. Burned out by the arduous labor of Uhuru, M-1 and stic.man chose to focus on music. Brand Nubian’s Lord Jamar discovered them in New York City and signed them a deal with Loud Records. Although dead prez was not always Loud’s top priority, they built a fan base due to their over-the-top performances (they’ve been known to ignite dollar bills and toss apples into the audiences, declaring that they must eat healthily).
Prior to the release of their debut album in 2000, they had already contributed songs to film soundtracks and made featurings on high-profile albums. Their first recorded song, “The Game of Life (Score)” appeared on the 1997 soundtrack to the film Soul in the Hole. In 1998 their song “D.O.P.E. (Drugs Oppress People Everyday)” was featured in the movie Slam. Also in 1998, they were featured on the skit “The Rain and the Sun” off Big Pun’s album Capital Punishment, and in 1999 were featured on The Beatnuts’ song “Look Around” off their album Musical Massacre.

The year was 1982. 1982 folks was takin’ the car, bus to go get the latest album from D Train’s You’re The One For Me. As an official 1980s blackgirl this album was one of my and my sisters favorites.
If you ever need some inspiration to follow your dreams or move forward in life play track 7 keep on. He tells you to keep on stepping and reach higher ground.
1982 D Train had some competition when Michael Jackson’s second solo album thriller came out. Keep On reached #2 on the dance charts and #15 on the R&B singles chart

Also that year saw the United States — AT&T Ordered to Break Up
1. The break-up of the AT&T monopoly was ordered during January of 1982.
2. The US government’s deal with the AT&T Corporation stated that AT&T would give up control of the Bell System (colloquially called Ma Bell) that had owned most of the telephone services in the United States and Canada since the 1940s.
3. The agreement came as the result of an anti-trust case brought against the company in 1974 by the US Department of Justice.
4. The break-up of the Bell System officially became effective two years later in 1984 when it was split into seven different independent Regional Bell operating Companies, informally known as “Baby Bells.”
