Son buried dead 97-year-old mom in backyard to collect benefits
An Arizona man allegedly buried his dead 97-year-old mother in the backyard — and told no one so that he could continue raking in the woman’s Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits, local police said.
Daniel Shannon, 66, of San Tan Valley, was busted Wednesday for allegedly hiding the corpse of Leonie Shannon, who hadn’t been seen since December, the Pinal County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Cops were called to the home on April 5 after someone became concerned about the whereabouts of the woman — who was under her son’s care.
At the time, Daniel Shannon told investigators that his mother walked away from the home on Dec. 21, and it wasn’t the first time the nonagenarian took off. The woman had just started receiving Veterans Affairs benefits, he claimed, and he didn’t want to report her missing in case she returned home.
But his story kept changing, police said.
Finally, when detectives questioned him Wednesday, he admitted his mom passed away on Dec. 21 — and instead of reporting it, he buried her in the backyard so he could continue receiving her Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits, cops said.
He claimed he needed the benefits to help pay for the patent on his “invention.” Cops did not specify what that invention was.
Authorities obtained a search warrant, and detectives discovered a body in the backyard. The medical examiner will positively identify the remains and determine a cause of death.
Daniel Shannon was charged with fraud and improper disposal of a body.
Cops are continuing to investigate, and he said could potentially face additional charges.

Man says intruder broke into his home, cleaned it immaculately, and left
MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – A Massachusetts father came home to a sparkling clean house – but he has no idea who tidied it.
Nate Roman told NBC News he knew something was wrong when he and his son returned to their Marlborough home on May 15th and the 5-year-old noticed the back door was ajar.
The 44-year-old said he was worried someone was still inside, but instead of an intruder he found the smell of cleaning supplies still in the air, and every room except the kitchen immaculately clean.
Roman said his son’s room, which had been a mess that morning, was spotless – complete with a “very neatly folded rose” folded origami-style on his toilet paper.
Unsure of who had been in the house, Roman called the police. Marlborough police officials didn’t immediately return a call for comment, but told NBC News that they had no leads or suspects in the case.
Roman called the experience “creepy,” but thinks it may have been a housecleaning service with the wrong address. The Massachusetts dad said he likely left the back door unlocked, something he doesn’t plan on doing in the future.

Aretha Franklin Went From Having No Will To Having Three
Two wills were located locked in a cabinet and another was stuffed inside a couch.
Motown legend Aretha Franklin left us in August 2018, and since that time her estate has been in a little bit of a tizzy. Arbitrators have attempted to settle her debts, a number that reportedly includes five million dollars in taxes. No one could believe that the 76-year-old multi-millionaire music icon didn’t leave behind a will, but now it’s being reported that Franklin isn’t as irresponsible as some have alleged.
Overnight, the singer went from having no wills to having three after the documents were found in random places inside her home. The Blast reports that Sabrina Owens, the head of Franklin’s estate, recently told a judge that she’d located a will. Owens said that while visiting Franklin’s Michigan estate she found a key to a cabinet she was previously unable to open. “Inside the cabinet, Owens found two purported holographic wills signed by Franklin,” The Blast states. “The documents were dated June 2010 and October 2010. She then found a spiral notebook in the living room couch with another purported will, dating back to 2014.”

According to the wills, Franklin wanted to take care of her sons. Both Edward and Kecalf was to receive one of her homes and a monthly allowance for their bills. They were also ordered to attend “business administration” courses or receive a degree in order to receive their portions of their inheritance. Franklin stated that she would cover the cost of their schooling.
She also listed her Warner Music Group royalties at $1.6 million, which is to be evenly divided to her four children. Her memorabilia was to be split among her children, as well, and her cars were to be sold off. This all seems well and good, but the estate, along with a court, is currently scrutinizing the handwritten wills to check for their validity.
