Pharrell says ‘Blurred Lines’ scandal changed his idea about sexism: ‘We live in a chauvinist culture’
Pharrell Williams is adjusting with the times and taking a step back to discuss one of his biggest pop hits.
The artist-producer and fashion mogul talked to GQ for its New Masculinity issue (released Monday) about his 2013 single, “Blurred Lines,” which he recorded with Robin Thicke and T.I. Back then, there was a controversy surrounding the record’s lyrics, which critics said degraded women, and the tune’s video, in which one of social media’s most openly sexual influencers, Emily Ratajkowski and other women frolicked in skimpy garb.
Ratajkowski called her appearannce in the music video “the bane of my existence.”
Speaking to the men’s fashion magazine, Pharrell said the Billboard award-winning record has aged terribly. He noted that much of the theme surrounding the song wouldn’t be acceptable in today’s #MeToo climate.
“I was also born in a different era, where the rules of the matrix at that time allowed a lot of things that would never fly today,” said Pharrell, 46, of his career then and now. “Advertisements that objectify women. Song content. Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place.”
The 13-time Grammy Award-winner said it took the backlash from his infamous Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus-performed record to flip his perspective on what the song meant to people within the larger society, not just within his fan base.
“I didn’t get it at first. Because there were older white women who, when that song came on, they would behave in some of the most surprising ways ever. And I would be like, ‘wow.’ They would have me blushing,” the “Happy” singer said.
“So when there started to be an issue with it, lyrically, I was, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ There are women who really like the song and connect to the energy that just gets you up. And ‘I know you want it’ — women sing those kinds of lyrics all the time. So it’s like, ‘What’s rapey about that?’”
The Virginia Beach, Va., native said: “And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women,”
“And I was like, ‘Got it. I get it.’ Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel. Even though it wasn’t the majority, it didn’t matter.”
He continued: “I cared what they were feeling, too. I realized that we live in a chauvinist culture in our country.
“Hadn’t realized that. Didn’t realize that some of my songs catered to that. So that blew my mind.”

Rihanna praises Vogue writer who didn’t prepare for interview: ‘That’s gangster’
Though some Rihanna fans are up in arms over a Vogue writer admitting she was unprepared to interview the star, the Fenty founder isn’t bothered by the journalist’s confession.
When asked about the backlash to Abby Aguirre’s admission she hadn’t been prepared, Rihanna came to the journalist’s defense.
Shortly after Rihanna’s Vogue cover story was published last week, some became fixated on the fact that Aguirre admitted she arrived to the interview without any questions prepared and she was “winging it.”
Rihanna praised Aguirre for her ability to think fast.
“No, no, no, no. That’s gangster. For you to get a call the day before being like, ‘Hey, Rihanna’s in LA, you wanna do this?’ And show up on the dime and write an incredible article that I’m really proud of and enjoyed reading?” the 31-year-old fashion designer told WWD. “She’s badass for that.”
She said, “If you don’t have to prepare, girl, you’re gangster.”
Aguirre tweeted in response to the backlash, saying it was a misunderstanding and she was on her way to Trader Joe’s when she got the call to interview Ri Ri.
“I research my subjects to death. *Especially* Rihanna. I appreciate the anger behind the reaction. But this is a misunderstanding, for which I take full responsibility,” she wrote. “I had literally no notice. The point was to convey how nerve-wracking this was, given my deep, bordering-on-psychotic reverence for Rihanna.”
If you had accused me of eating too much Mexican food, I would take that personally. Because it’s true. But you can’t accuse me of not doing research. Ask anyone I have ever worked with. Ever.— Abby Aguirre (@abby_aguirre) October 9, 2019

Tyra Banks Talks Being In An Emotionally Abusive Relationship
Supermodel Tyra Banks is opening up on Sunday’s episode of Uncensored where she speaks about being in an emotionally abusive relationship. Though the mother of one didn’t state who she was speaking about in the show’s video preview, she did say it involved an ex whom she was in a long-term relationship with.
Speaking in the video preview, Tyra stated the following.
“I remember being kind of judgmental for women that were in bad relationships. And I’m just like, ‘Get out. Come on, like what are you doing? Leave him! I don’t get it.’ Until I experienced it myself. I was in a relationship for many years, and we probably broke up 14-15times. There were things that he said and made me feel like, I couldn’t leave, or if I left I had to go back.”
Tyra did a good job of hiding that she was going through so much when she was in the relationship. You may see the video preview with Tyra Banks in the player below.
Tyra Banks has a three-year-old son, York Banks Asla, with her ex-boyfriend Erik Asla. It’s still unknown if Tyra was specifically referring to Erik or another ex-boyfriend from her past. Tyra opened up about a very emotional time in her life and touched on a few points in the preview.
First, Tyra explained that she never understood fully what women in abusive relationships go through or why it is so hard to leave until she was in an abusive relationship herself. She isn’t alone in her sentiments as most women who are in similar situations would readily agree that they never saw themselves being a victim or staying in a relationship that isn’t positive or helpful.
Tyra also made it clear that the abuse was only emotional and never physical. She stated the following.
“He never hit me, but I would say there were blows to my spirit, blows to my emotional well-being every day. He was a master at being able to be happy and nice to everybody else but whispering these negative things to me.”
What do you think of Tyra Banks openness about what she went through? Are you going to watch Tyra Banks on Uncensored Sunday?

CupcakKe Tearfully Announces That She Is Retiring & Removing Music From Streaming Platforms
Last night, the Chicago rapper CupcakKe sent out an Instagram Live video in which she claims that she’s retiring completely from the music industry. She claims that she’s ending her current tour, which started earlier this month. She also says that she’s going to remove all of her music from every streaming platform. In the 18-minute video, CupcakKe is visibly distressed, frequently breaking down in tears, speaking to a camera while wrapped in what appears to be a hotel bedsheet. It’s very disturbing.
Earlier this year, CupcakKe was hospitalized after tweeting that she was “about to commit suicide.” (After her hospitalization, she thanked fans, writing that she is getting the help she needs.) Last month, she announced her 10k Tour, in which she would give away $10,000 to random fans over the course of the tour. And she just released a new track called “Grilling N****s” last Friday. Since posting the video, she has deleted her Twitter and all of her posts on Instagram. She is scheduled to perform at the Masquerade in Atlanta tonight, and the venue’s website, at least right now, says nothing about the show being cancelled.
In the video that she posted last night, CupcakKe, visibly in tears, opens up by saying, “So this Live is going to be the last video that y’all will see of me.” She goes on: “I will no longer be doing music, and all of my music will be coming off of every platform.” She also says that her tour is cancelled, effective immediately.
In the video she claims that she’s ashamed of the music she’s released, much of which is extremely sexual: “I feel as though I’m corrupting the youth… I want to go to heaven after this, and I don’t want to go to hell. Just seeing all-age kids at the shows, seeing them sing along to ‘hump me’ and ‘fuck me’ and all this shit, it has torn me apart. I’m just not happy. I don’t want to be around no one right now… It’s wrong. And even if it’s OK for y’all, it’s not OK with me… I want to be normal again.” She thanks fans and apologizes for letting them down.
In the video, CupcakKe says that, even when she raps about non-sexual topics, the sexual music is what gets the most attention. She also feels that “the media” won’t take her seriously because of her body. And she says that she has “a very bad gambling addiction” and that she recently lost $700,000 in a casino, which allowed her to see that the people around her are using her.
