Russell Simmons accuser calls out ‘Breakfast Club’ after mogul’s rape denial
Russell Simmons denied allegations of sexual assault during a radio interview Wednesday, leading one of his accusers to blast the program for giving the hip hop mogul a platform.
The 62-year-old music producer spoke out on “The Breakfast Club” when co-host Charlamagne tha God asked him about the new HBO Max docuseries “On the Record,” in which Simmons has been accused of sexually assaulting three women.
“I have not watched it,” Simmons said, before going on to detail his life as a “playboy” while denying he ever forced himself on anyone.
“I’m guilty—of having underwritten, supported, made soundtracks for, taken advantage of, and lived in a grossly unjust society,” he went on. “I helped write the song ‘I’m a Ho’ with Whodini. … I made the movie ‘How to Be a Player’ and Bell Bill Bellamy played me. So I know what I’m guilty of, and I’ve been unconscious as a playboy, and today the title is appropriate of ‘womanizer,’ So I’m guilty of that. And you know, back then I thought it was a game … there were no black actresses that I didn’t date, and they’re my friends today.
“I went out every night, looking for new girls to date, and almost all of them are my friends today … they don’t have the experience of me being the monster that the movie makes me to be.”
Simmons also discussed Oprah Winfrey’s initial involvement in the doc and her decision to ultimately back out.
“She walked away, and she did say that the stories had inconsistencies — not one, but all the stories, all three girls.
“I could never say that someone doesn’t feel victimized, these stories are 25-40 years old. I can’t say that someone doesn’t feel victimized, I can tell you that I don’t feel I victimized them.”
Accuser Sil Lai Abrams immediately took to social media to call out the businessman and “The Breakfast Club” itself for giving the Def Jam co-founder a platform.
“The biggest radio show in the Black community just gave a huge middle finger to Black women and survivors of sexual assault,” Abrams tweeted. “This is obscene @breakfastclubam. Why do you carry water for this man? Why now? Why are you so tone deaf? You’re all complicit in ensuring that black women’s right to bodily autonomy continues to be denied. You’re also rape apologists.”

DL Hughley Calls Kanye West “Morally Bankrupt”
Kanye West is no stranger to criticism. The outspoken Yeezy owner has had his share of controversy and comedian/radio host, DL Hugely, is no fan of the rapper. Like R&B singer Tyrese, Hughley believes West’s spiritual awakening with his rap Christian album and Sunday Service movement is a marketing ploy. Hughley has also been critical of Kanye’s in-laws, especially Kim Kardashian West, and her work in prison reform.
DL Hughley says Kanye West is morally bankrupt
Hughley has been utilizing his expanded profile outside of comedy to speak on social issues throughout the last few years and many consider him a thought leader on issues regarding society and race. Hughley has written several books giving his commentary and has been praised for the analysis he gives on important issues.
The comedian turned radio host has not been pleased with West’s behavior for the last few years but was particularly upset about West’s now-infamous “slavery was a choice” comment. In a new interview with Vlad TV, Hugely says West has no morals.
“He’s a tremendously talented dude but a morally bankrupt human being,” Hugely said. “When albums didn’t sell, this n***a sold God to n***as,” he continued, referring to West’s Jesus Is King album and controversial Sunday Service ceremonies.
He also spoke of West’s political affiliations, calling his decisions unsalvagable. Hughley believes that West is too vain to see any error in his ways and make changes for the better.
DL Hughley has criticized Kanye West and the Kardashian family before
Hughley has spoken out about West before. He once said in an interview that West only appears smart to “dumb people” and that West has no real advisers, but only enablers who surround him.
Hughley has also been vocal about his feelings about West’s wife, particularly his criticism of Kim Kardashian West’s prison reform work. While he believes it’s admirable that Kardashian West is using her platform for the greater good, he has been skeptical of her agenda.
He has been upset at those who have praised Kardashian West for her work yet fail to acknowledge African Americans who have been in the line of advocacy far longer than the reality star.
One of Hughley’s jokes about Kardashian West’s romantic relationships gained the most traction. It came after Kardashian West was seen leaving the White House following her meeting to discuss prison reform.
“Kim Kardashian meeting with the president to discuss prison reform makes sense,” he began. “Who’s screwed more Black dudes than her and the prison system?”
Hughley was unphased by Kardashian West’s work to free Alice Johnson, a non-violent offender who was serving a life sentence for drug charges. According to Hughley, Johnson’s case represented a photo opportunity for Kardashian West and the case was an easier task for her.
“This was the prisoner a reality star liked and a cause they could go behind that another reality star was sparked to,” he told Vlad TV in 2018.

Criminal group that hacked law firm threatens to release Trump documents
A known criminal enterprise released a large set of stolen files, at least some of which appeared legitimate.
A cybercriminal gang that hacked a major entertainment law firm claims it will release information on President Donald Trump if it doesn’t receive $42 million in ransom.
The group, a known criminal enterprise, didn’t offer any proof it had information compromising to Trump. It did, however, release a large set of stolen files from the law firm, Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. NBC News reviewed some of the documents and they appear legitimate.
The group uses ransomware — a type of malicious software — to break into a victim’s networks and encrypt them, demanding a fee to unlock them. If the victim doesn’t pay up, the group slowly leaks out unencrypted versions of files stolen from those networks to prompt payment.
The criminal group posted on its blog a threat to publish files related to Trump.
“The next person we’ll be publishing is Donald Trump. There’s an election race going on, and we found a ton of dirty laundry on time,” the group wrote, giving a one week deadline. “And to you voters, we can let you know that after such a publication, you certainly don’t want to see him as president.”
Though the gang tends to release legitimately hacked files, they left no clue of whether they actually had compromising information on Trump, or whether this was a ploy to put more pressure on the law firm to pay.
“On the one hand, I think it’s bulls—,” said Brett Callow, who studies ransomware gangs at the antivirus company Emsisoft. “But on the other hand, getting a rep for bluffing isn’t helpful to extortionists. They need their victims to believe that their threats are real and will be carried through.”
The law firm did not respond to a request for comment, but told Rolling Stone: “Despite our substantial investment in state-of-the-art technology security, foreign cyberterrorists have hacked into our network and are demanding $42 million as ransom.”
The White House declined to comment.
Ransomware gangs have become a persistent threat to the U.S. in recent years, and law enforcement has had difficulty stopping them. In many cases, these groups operate out of Russia, which doesn’t extradite its citizens.
“We’re pretty sure these guys operate in Russia’s ‘locus of control,’” said Allan Liska, who tracks the gang for the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.
But threatening to release files about Trump, who enjoys a cordial relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, might be a step too far, Liska said.
“If they release this stuff, it is possible they will have both U.S. Cyber Command and FSB targeting them,” Liska said, referring to Russia’s Federal Security Service. “Most Russian leadership leaves them alone as long as they don’t target Russian citizens. This would probably be an exception.”

DMX Wants Jay-Z to Face Off Against Him in Instagram Music Battle
A trend started with the inaugural “Verzuz” music challenges that pits two artists in a virtual Instagram Live ring for a friendly back-and-forth with their hits.
It’s less of a battle and more of celebration, but the popularity of the event has spawned discussions about who should be squaring up in these one-on-one sessions. Some names aren’t in the running, and others—such as Ray J—have been shut down by fans.
But there are artists who have the catalogs to step into the arena and a fan base who would show up. The latest to toss his own hat into the ring is Yonkers-bred rapper DMX, and he wants Jay-Z to get at him (pun intended).
DMX named Jay-Z for his hip-hop match
As mentioned, people are having spirited talks about which artists they’d like to see next for the Verzuz series. When DMX was a guest on NORE’s hot podcast, Drink Champs, he was asked who he would face off with, and his answer was Jay-Z.
As DJ EFN said, it would be epic for hip-hop culture. Both of their debut albums dropped in 1996, and it just so happens that Verzuz co-creator Swizz Beatz has produced songs for both of them too.
DMX and Jay-Z have a history
DMX said it would be battle number three for them, and for those out of the loop, the two rappers have a history of duking it out with freestyles. Would you like to hear the story of how it all got started way back when?
DMX was a known battle rapper in his early days, and it’s a mantle he still carries. Back in the ‘90s, the two met up in the Bronx (some say Harlem) for what became a legendary battle.
Damon Dash says it went on for hours and though it was a gentleman’s game, Murder Inc. CEO Irv Gotti implied that DMX never liked Jay-Z.
During an interview with The Breakfast Club in 2016, DMX said he was over his anger toward his rap frenemy, Jay-Z. As it stands, people still argue over who won that battle.
Another one happened during Jay-Z’s Hard Knock Life Tour in 1999, but it was still a friendly backstage contest. You can find footage on YouTube. It wasn’t all bad blood, as the two rap legends have even collaborated on a few tracks over the years.
Fans think DMX is a formidable ‘opponent’ for Jay-Z
While the likelihood of Jay-Z returning to the scene in an intimate internet format like Verzuz low, fans can still hope. Many believe DMX is one of the only rappers in the game today who can rock at the same table as Hov. On Instagram, comments were rolling in.
One person wrote, “DMX got hits and street anthems. Let’s not forget.” Another said, “I already knew who X was gonna pick. That was and still is his peer.”
And one noted, “Everyone forgot that DMX beat Jay in a rap battle.” Ultimately, people agree that this would be epic and fun for hip-hop fans to watch. But don’t count on it happening.

50 Cent on His Oldest Son: ‘I Didn’t Think That Success Would Cost Me My Firstborn’
50 Cent spoke with Van Lathan about his new book Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter on Tuesday night but the conversation would shift to his son, Marquise Jackson.
Fif would detail despite not being in his life, Marquise had everything he didn’t have due to over $1 million in child support.
“It is sad, it’s a sad situation,” 50 said. “When you pray for success, you don’t necessarily pray for the things that come with it. It’s no such thing as success without jealousy without envy or entitlement.
“I didn’t think that success would cost me my firstborn but it’s the situation it is. Like, my grandfather used to say, ‘If it rattles like a snake and slithers like a snake, is it a snake or do you need to be bit?’”
Marquise had some words for 50 last week after the rapper joked about accepting 6ix9ine before his own son.
“I just woke up I had a long day on the Gram yesterday. I didn’t get a chance to hop in the most gangsta live ever,” Marquise said.
He would go on to play the clip where 50 said he would claim Tekashi first.
“Did he just say he would claim a rat?,” Marquise said. “Aw nah, I don’t want no part of that cheese y’all eating over there big fella.”

Pioneering Hip-Hop Journalist Dee Barnes Is Now Homeless
Check out Dee Barnes’ GoFundMe campaign here.
Dee Barnes has been evicted from her home after a long financial struggle.
In a new interview, Barnes revealed she’s now homeless. “I had never asked for public help before, but I then remembered a long time ago while I was going through the assault trial in 1991 people were sending me checks for my legal fees. I never cashed any of them — not one — but knowing I had that support kept me strong enough to continue to face each court date,” she told HipHopDx.
She continued, “right now, I am officially homeless. My goal with the campaign is to regain stability, which is imperative for survivors of any trauma.”
Barnes had recently created a GoFundMe explaining her situation.
A post on her account reads, “Standing in our own truth not the definitions or the expectations is powerful, and this is my TRUTH…Yes, I did post the link to my PayPal, CashApp and GooglePay accounts asking for help because I am in the process of being evicted. This page was created as an emergency fund to stop the process and the subsequent legal fees. Even though I am facing extreme financial hardship, I keep my head up. I know who I am, I know my worth and I know I’m not alone.”
As the host of Pump It Up! Barnes became the first female hip-hop journalist to have a broadcast television show. Her career derailed in 1991, after being brutally attacked by Dr. Dre. Barnes filed criminal charges against Dre and a civil suit followed before they settled out of court in 1993.
Dre, who had long dismissed the story, spoke on his history of abusing women during an episode of HBO’s The Defiant Ones, saying he was “out of his fucking mind.” The music mogul referred to abuse as “a major blemish” on who he is as a man.
After the attack, Barnes says she continues to have migraines 28 years later, and believes that she was blackballed by the industry.
“As far as the subject matter of my past history with Dr. Dre and my current situation, I will say any time a women tells her account of abuse from a public figure, there is always extreme backlash,” she said in the interview. “Women are punished first by the crime committed against them and then for holding abusers accountable for their actions and speaking out against domestic violence and sexual assault. Survivors should be able to hold people in positions of power accountable for their actions without losing their own power.”
In 2016, Dre threatened to sue Sony Pictures over the release of the TV movie Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le, which depicted him as a violent abuser to former girlfriend and singer Michel’le.
Michel’le has gone on record with allegations of physical abuse against Dre.
