DevaCurl Faces Class Action Lawsuit Alleging Hair Loss
NPR’s Leila Fadel speaks with hair stylist Stephanie Mero about the controversy surrounding DevaCurl products.
LEILA FADEL, HOST:
For years now, more and more people have been embracing their natural hair. They’re choosing to let it curl rather than straightening it with heat and chemicals. And if you’re part of the curly hair community, you know this natural hair movement runs deep.
One company’s products dominate this corner of the hair care market, DevaCurl. But now DevaCurl is mired in controversy. Earlier this week, a group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging that its products were causing them to suffer from scalp irritation, damaged hair and hair loss.
We invited DevaCurl to speak on the program. They declined but provided a statement which reads in part, quote, “we are aware that a lawsuit has been filed, but we do not discuss active litigation. We stand behind the quality and safe use of our DevaCurl products” – end quote. So we’ve called up someone with direct experience with the company’s products, Stephanie Mero. She’s a hairstylist in Orlando, Fla. Stephanie, thanks for joining us.
STEPHANIE MERO: Thank you so much, Leila.
FADEL: So for our listeners, can you explain the significance of DevaCurl to the curly hair community?
MERO: So DevaCurl really is, I feel like, the focus and center of the whole curly hair movement, if you want to call it, or natural hair movement. And so they’ve created this huge brand that’s everything from stylists and products to salons. And even the original founder, Lorraine Massey, wrote the “Curly Girl” handbook.
And since then, it’s really evolved to where there’s all these sort of – you could call them copycats in the industry, all these other product lines coming up. But if you want to say that they jumped on the bandwagon, I would say that DevaCurl is the driver of that wagon.
FADEL: So what led to this lawsuit? I mean, what was happening to you? You’re a hairstylist, right? What was happening to you and your clients?
MERO: So my hair became more important to me when I started doing YouTube videos. And what I noticed was it was – I was going through this amazing healthy hair journey. People were really obsessed with watching my hair grow out because I had chopped it all off. And it started to change. But I didn’t attribute it to the products because I had used them for four years on my clients, on myself with no issues at all. Everyone had super healthy hair, no complaints.
And I had moved actually from Orlando to Miami. And around that time was when my hair started to change, so I just attributed it to, like, dryness or something else. But it got so damaged that I no longer could attribute it to weather.
And then I started to realize that all my clients that use DevaCurl, which was 99% of them – their hair, the texture of it was looking like mine, even if we had totally different hair. And the bald spots and stuff – I noticed that after the fact. So people are upset, as you can imagine.
FADEL: Yeah. When you have – when you find a bald spot, you get a little upset, I would imagine. But you created a Facebook support group for other people to share their stories, stories like your own. And it now has 40,000 members, over 40,000 members. What’s the overall response been to, you know, the allegations?
MERO: Well, there’s a – there’s two very far apart ends. It’s either I believe you and I believe this is happening and it’s happening to me and I’m super upset, and what do I do now? Help. And then there’s the people who are like in there just to see what’s going on but believe this is not at all possible and feel this, like, really strong relationship to the brand.
FADEL: So you’re a hairstylist, like we talked about. So how has this impacted your work? I know this used to be kind of the central product you used on your clients, on yourself. What are you doing now?
MERO: It’s completely changed my work. I had to totally rewire my brain because I couldn’t use the skills I was taught, for example, at DevaCurl academy for styling because that’s for healthy hair. Severely damaged hair has to be treated completely different. And honestly, realizing the scope of this, stylists are going to need training on how to work with it because I cut all my damage off, but most people are not prepared to do that. And that means they need to learn how to work with it. And it’s the stylists’ responsibility to become educated in whatever we need to know to be able to give the person in our chair whatever they need to feel the best about themselves and their hair as possible.
FADEL: That was Stephanie Mero, a hairstylist in Orlando, Fla. And we should say again we offered DevaCurl an opportunity to speak on the program, but the company declined, providing a written statement that reads, in part, quote, all of our products have gone through rigorous testing that has confirmed they are safe and adhere to both quality assurance and regulatory standards. We also recognize that any changes to curly hair for whatever reason demand a special type of attention that safety tests alone can’t address. That’s why DevaCurl is committed to creating a professional curl care council of trusted medical professionals, dermatologists, independent industry experts, professional stylists and members of our Curl community to help us all better understand healthy curls and scalp.

Eminem honors 50 Cent at Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony
Eminem honored 50 Cent during 50’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. The rapper-actor’s star was added to the landmark on Thursday.
“Of all the things I don’t remember about 2002, I have a very clear memory of the first time I met 50,” Eminem said during his speech. “One of the first things I noticed when he walked into the room was his presence. It just kind of felt like he’s going to be a star … He was the whole package.”
Eminem went on to discuss 50 Cent’s music. “And what’s crazy about it to me is the charisma and the personality, everything matched the intensity of his music.” He called 50 Cent’s first album “so classic,” and mentioned 50’s prolific output of mixtapes and how he and Dr. Dre walked away from the meeting impressed. “If it worked on us, it was going to work on the rest of the world and I’m glad we trusted our instincts.”
“I’m here today because he’s not only a business partner to me, this is one of the best friends I’ve known in the world,” he continued. “I would say it’s much more fun to be his friend than it is to be his enemy, ’cause this guy is f–king relentless. And he won’t stop.”
The Detroit rapper noted many of 50 Cent’s accomplishments – artist, entrepreneur, actor, director, producer — as well as recognized their friendship. “He pretty much does it all. And he’s also helped me through a lot of hard times in my own life and he’s always been there when I need him. So, 50, congrats on your star, man. Hollywood is making it official what I knew from the beginning and Dre knew from the beginning.”
50 Cent, in turn, thanked both Eminem and Dr. Dre, who was also in attendance, during his speech. “I don’t honestly think my career would’ve been what it was without their support. Dre’s a mentor for the whole squad, really, because he’s been doing it for long before that and was able to guide us in ways without even knowing that he’s doing it.”
50 Cent’s “Power” will air the last episode of its sixth and final season on Sunday. The 50 Cent-executive produced ABC drama “For Life” will premiere on February 11th.

Fans Are Calling Out Beyoncé and Her New Ivy Park Collection for Not Being Size-Inclusive
Fans have been anticipating the release of Beyoncé’s Ivy Park x Adidas collection for months. When the pre-sale kicked off on Jan. 17, they rushed online to stock up on their favorite items. But some weren’t able to get their hands on anything, as much of the merchandise did not come in sizes beyond XL. Many of them took to social media with their concerns, calling out Beyoncé and Adidas for failing to include a broader range of sizes.
What is the Ivy Park x Adidas collection?
Beyoncé announced the collection with a series of Instagram posts shared in December 2019. The line features sneakers, jumpsuits, cargo pants, tops, hoodies, dresses, biker shorts, coats, backpacks, and leggings. The items follow a maroon, solar orange, and cream color palette.
“My team has worked hard with the Adidas team in bringing my vision to life for this first collection and I am grateful and proud,” Beyoncé said in a news release. “From the accessories to the clothes and footwear, I wanted to design and re-imagine pieces that serve as favorite armor for anyone who acknowledges the strength in their individual style and lives freely and boldly.”
In ELLE‘s January 2020 issue, Beyoncé described the collaboration as gender-neutral and noted that she designs Ivy Park items with “everyone in mind.”
The launch of the Ivy Park x Adidas collection
A day before the official launch, fans got the chance on Jan. 17 to buy some items early. After logging online, some people were disappointed to see that the items were not available in their sizes. According to reports, the pieces only come in XS to XL.
So, they took to websites such as Twitter to express their disappointment.
One woman tweeted that while she loves the singer and is a “noted member of the Beyhive,” it is “incredibly disappointing that a woman who has made inclusion a part of her brand willfully excluded plus-size people from her athleisure line.”
Another said, “I stan Beyoncé, but it’s disappointing to see that this collection only goes up to an XL, especially because Adidas recently started selling size-inclusive activewear as well.” (Adidas launched a size-inclusive collection with the plus-size brand, Universal Standard in late 2019.)
Someone else tweeted to Beyoncé: “[It’s] sad you left your millions of plus size fans out. WE LIKE TO LOOK [GOOD] TO!!”
Even those whose sizes are available spoke out against the line, with one woman saying that while she can fit the XL, she’s still “very surprised Beyoncé herself didn’t make sure plus sizes were included… hurt actually.”
Others, however, took different stances.
“Love Beyoncé but I had no plans on purchasing Ivy Park so I’m not even mad at the lack of plus size pieces,” one person said.
Another tweeted: “We all love beyoncé. it’s okay for her plus sized fans to be upset about the ivy park size range. accountability is how people improve.”
As of writing, neither Beyoncé or Adidas has commented on the criticism. It’s unclear whether Beyoncé intends to expand the Ivy Park sizing in the future.
It’s not the first time Beyoncé has faced this kind of backlash
The Lemonade singer also faced criticism after a 2016 Ivy Park launch. The items also only came in sizes XS to XL.
“Funny thing about this Beyoncé #IvyPark collection is she wants people to be FIT but the only size she offers is FIT sizes already, so….” one person tweeted at the time.
Another called it “Absolutely disgusting.”
Beyoncé’s fans come in all shapes, so it’s understandable why people were hoping that the line would have had a broader range of sizes. Hopefully, Bey will take these concerns into consideration and will release something more inclusive next time.

Rae Sremmurd’s Stepfather Murdered, Duo’s Younger Brother in Custody as Person of Interest
Tragedy has reportedly struck the family of Rae Sremmurd.
On Tuesday (Jan. 7), TMZ reported that Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi’s stepfather, 62-year-old Floyd Sullivan, had been shot dead late Monday evening (Jan. 6). According to the report, their 19-year-old stepbrother Michael Brown is being held for psychiatric evaluation as a person of interest in the shooting.
Sullivan reportedly helped raise Swae and Jxmmi since middle school and was living in their hometown of Tupelo, Miss. with their mother, Bernadette. Sullivan and Bernadette also shared a son of their own, Floyd Jr.
According to the report, Tupelo Police Department says that Sullivan died on the scene from “at least a couple” of gunshot wounds. The Tupelo Police Department has also reportedly said that no one other than Brown is being sought in connection with the killing.
This news marks the second time a rap act’s family member has been murdered within the last year. In August 2019, Tee Grizzley’s aunt Jobina Brown was shot and killed as they were both in Detroit.
XXL has reached out to a rep for Rae Sremmurd as well as the Tupelo Police Department for comment. XXL sends condolences to their family members.

A 5-year-old carried a toddler half a mile in Alaska terrain after being left home alone
(CNN) — A 5-year-old walked through extreme temperatures in the Alaskan terrain with an 18-month-old after authorities say they were left home alone.
The incident took place Tuesday when the temperature in Venetie, Alaska, was -31 degrees Fahrenheit (-35 degrees Celsius), according to a dispatch from the state’s Department of Public Safety. Venetie is in the northeastern section of Alaska.
The children arrived at a neighbor’s home with “cold injuries,” Alaska State Troopers said. The 5-year-old got scared when the power went out and carried the toddler about half a mile while wearing only socks and light clothing, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Julie Peter, 37, was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree, the dispatch said.
CNN’s Laura Ly contributed to this report.

Lil Wayne Joins XXXTentacion On “School Shooters”
Angst and anger
XXXTentacion’s final posthumous album has arrived. Bad Vibes Forever takes listeners through a plethora of emotions, but the angsty “School Shooters” featuring Lil Wayne is a personal favorite. An anxious sounding synth opens the song, giving the track an eerie feeling before even one word is said. X kicks of the song with a brief verse before Wayne comes through and murders things.
In an interview with Billboard, X’s manager Solomon Sobande spoke about the Wayne feature, stating, “A lot of records, like ‘School Shooter’ featuring Lil Wayne or ‘Hearteater,’ Jahseh saved for this point in his career when he was more established, so they would be better received. A lot of things he had worked on, almost complete ideas, weren’t finished maybe [they] only had one verse and a hook or only a beat. To fill out those songs, a who’s who of the music industry came out to help us.”

Damon Dash’s $950k Child Support Tab … To Come Out of Lee Daniels’ Pocket!
Damon Dash and his baby mamas are cutting him out of the equation when it comes to settling up his hefty child support tab — and instead, the dough will come straight from Lee Daniels.
The hip-hop mogul had a hearing Tuesday in NYC, where he and Rachel Roy and Cindy Morales came to figure out how to square the $950k he owes them in back child support. Their settlement plan involves a previous settlement Damon reached with Daniels. Stick with us.
Lee and Dame reached a settlement earlier this year over a $5 million lawsuit Dame had filed against him. On Tuesday, Roy and Morales’ attorney Donnell Suares, and Dash’s attorney Natraj Bhushan informed the court the child support will come directly out of the pot of money Lee owes Damon.
The deal calls for the women to be paid in installments of several thousand dollars per quarter until the total of $950k is paid in full.
Rachel and Cindy had this idea earlier this year when they sued Lee to get direct payments.
You’ll recall, just last month — in an entirely different legal battle — Dash cried poverty, saying in court docs he couldn’t pay off a $2,400 debt. You’ll recall, cops arrested Dame about 2 weeks ago over the child support. When he got out he told us he’d paid what he owed.
Seems like he didn’t, but at least they’ve now agreed on a payment plan. They just need the judge to sign off on the deal.

Lil Wayne Almost Got Arrested In Saudi Arabia After Because of Drugs
Lil Wayne was inches away from getting arrested in Saudi Arabia and now he vows to never go back to the Diriyah Music Festival.
Lil Wayne got into some hot water while in Saudi Arabia recently, and he has now put the country on blast. The “Sucker for Pain” rapper ventured to the Middle East state this past weekend to take part in the Diriyah Music Festival in the capital of Riyadh. The Kingdom has become a hot place for artists to perform recently, with 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Tyga, and Future, all showing Saudi love over the last few months. The “Rack City” rapper and “First Off” artist both returned for the Diriyah festival.
Although the show went well on Saturday, with loads of fans showing how pleased they were about Wayne gracing their presence, the mutual love stopped short when the 37-year-old took to Twitter to lay into the Saudi capital. “Never going to Riyadh again!!!” Weezy declared online.
While he did not elaborate on the reasons behind his chance of heart, reports claim that it may have been drug-related.
Saudi Arabia is a super conservative Muslim country with tons of things being prohibited. Tourists are not allowed to wear shorts, take drugs, or even dab as the dance move was outlawed by the government in 2017, and a local woman was charged for performing the move this past October.
Speculations are that Wayne narrowly escaped being locked up himself for personal drug use — a huge no-no in the Gulf state — with Saudi officials even calling him out on Twitter (because apparently that’s still allowed).
They alleged that Weezy had been informed about the strict narcotics laws but chose to ignore them. And because he’s a thug like that, the Grammy award winner posted a photo of himself smoking a joint with the caption, “IT’S THAT GKUA Ultra Premium @gkuaofficial #thatgkua #myweed.”
Lil Wayne has since deleted the tweet.
