Domestic violence calls increase as people shelter in place during COVID-19 outbreak
During this time, as family are sequestered inside their homes, there is a dark side.
Domestic violence shelters are seeing a dramatic increase in calls for help as people shelter in place to avoid COVID-19 exposure.
Staying at home can be a horrible situation for domestic violence victims.
Jessica Garza is a survivor who fled an abusive husband, who beat her so bad she lost her unborn baby.
“Being there with your abuser, I can’t imagine what it’s like for them right now because me, I just needed to leave, “ said Garza.
Domestic violence shelters, like The Family Place, say they are seeing a big increase in calls for help.
”This is going to be similar to what happens during the holiday when everyone is together and a lot of frustration,” said Paige Flink, The Family Place CEO.
Some shelters have run out of room and are looking to put victims in hotel rooms and other places, because of social distancing rules.
“What has also happened is because some shelters don’t have private bedrooms, they are having to isolate people and spread them apart, which has reduced how many people they can take in,” said Flink.
Flink says they are getting extremely violent calls that are COVID-19 related.
“People being locked in rooms, being shot through the doors, prevented from leaving, having to stay because he’s afraid she will go out and get it. Crazy stuff,” said Flink.
Garza was able to go to her sister’s for help.
She says women should not hesitate to find a safe place to go.
“Let that shelter be something else. In this new norm we find ourselves in, let the new shelter be a friend’s home, a hotel room, anything,” said Garza.
The Family Place says it will not turn away someone in a lethal situation. The shelter will find a place.
The Family Places says it’s making sure the people coming in have no symptoms of the virus, and the shelter is being deep cleaned frequently to keep everyone safe.

Nick Cannon’s ‘Wild ‘N Out’ Star Hitman Holla Arrested— Was he Racially Profiled?
St. Louis rapper, actor and comedian, Gerald Fulton, Jr. p.k.a. Hitman Holla was pulled over a minor driving violation in Atlanta, Thurs. March 19. However, things were swiftly elevated as he was pulled out of his car for having an outstanding warrant and then later arrested for having a vehicle that was possibly stolen.
His manager said that that is not true.
Many believe this is a case of racial profiling. What do you think?
The artist was hanging out with his friend John John da Don and his manager, PB when he reportedly observed that the police were following him for no reason. The police were believed to have been following the two influencers for a while before stopping them. It is reported from the video, that the car’s VIN’s number was looked up, and the officers were trying to see if they matched the license on the car.
In an Instalive, John John da Don reports:
“They asked Hitman to get out the car… they are asking this man how much he paid for the car… what that got to do with anything.”
“The n*gga was following us for like four exits. Then pulled us over for something we just did (crossing lanes).”
John John reveals that the cops did ask for the usual license and registration, but was thrown off when they asked the Wild ‘N Out star how much he paid for the car. That was when he decided to go live on Instagram.
“That’s crazy. We don’t know what this n*gga got going on. They done asked Hitman to step out of the car. For what? They asked him how much he paid for the car and told him to step out. Told him that they pulled him over because of a lane change.”
JJDD tells the fans that the police called for back up and requested to see that VIN number. It was then that they put cuffs on the MTV star, and his two friends were in disbelief.
When the police officers came back to the car, it is uncovered that Hitman supposedly has a warrant out for his arrest.
His manager tells him that can’t be true. While it is unclear what exactly happened, the video shows JJDD being asked to step out of the car that the three of them were driving in.
The police then say that the car is bad and that no one can drive it. The officer shares that the VIN numbers have been tampered with and so the police took it to have it verified.
The last statement you hear is the police asking the manager and JJDD to call an Uber to get them back to their destination. He was arrested “possession of a vehicle with an altered VIN number and also the license plate is not legitimate.”
Hopefully, everything is straightened out. The manager reiterates that Hitman is innocent.

As the coronavirus crisis continues, KFC has suspended a U.K. ad campaign that shows people licking their fingers
Turns out KFC’s longtime stance on finger lickin’ isn’t the best public health advice right now.
The fast food chain announced Friday it would suspend a U.K. ad campaign focused on its famous “finger lickin’ good” slogan in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
As health officials all over the world stress the need for hygiene and hand-washing to prevent the spread of the virus, KFC reconsidered whether it was a good idea to show people licking their fingers after eating the company’s flagship product, according to the Independent.
“It doesn’t feel like the right time to be airing this campaign, so we’ve decided to pause it for now ― but we’re really proud of it and look forward to bringing it back at a later date,” a spokesperson said.
The campaign had already received 163 complaints, a spokesperson for the Advertising Standards Authority, a self-regulatory agency focused on the British advertising industry, told the paper.
The decision to temporarily retire “finger lickin’ good” comes just weeks after the chain announced a search for a “professional finger licker” willing to show off their skills on billboards across Britain.
KFC did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment. However, the company insisted to the New York Post that “finger lickin’ good” wasn’t being kicked to the curb permanently.
KFC isn’t the only corporation forced to ditch long-planned ad campaigns as a result of COVID-19.
Both Coors Light and Hershey have also canceled ads that showed people hugging each other or joking about working from home, The Washington Post noted.
Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines apologized on Thursday after sending out a mass email with the subject line, “Never A Better Time To Fly,” according to Business Insider.

Angie Martinez Once Fought Wendy Williams
Angie Martinez and Wendy Williams were both powerhouses in urban radio in the 90s and 2000s. The two women broke barriers in their reporting on hip hop at a time when it was male-dominated. Naturally, the powers that be would try and pit them against one another, as opposed to enforcing girl power.
However, Martinez revealed in her memoir that it wasn’t the men who stirred up drama between them, but Williams’s gossip itself. They came to blows in an epic behind the scenes showdown.
Angie Martinez details fight with Wendy Williams
In Martinez’s 2016 memoir My Voice, she chronicled her life as a hip-hop radio personality. She got her start at Hot 97 in New York City at just 16-years-old and worked her way up from intern to radio host and interviewed some of the biggest names in rap, including the late Tupac Shakur.
Her and Williams both eventually worked at the station during different time periods and were two of the most popular radio hosts – but they had differing styles of reporting. Williams became famous for airing out people’s dirty laundry while Martinez took a more journalistic approach. When Williams revealed Martinez’s personal business, it landed her in hot water with Martinez.
Martinez was dating rapper Q-Tip at the time and Williams made snide remarks about Martinez and Q-Tip’s relationship. Williams said on her show, “One of my co-workers is dating Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. Oh well. I guess some women like men who like men.” Martinez was pissed.
“Everybody was gay to Wendy,” Martinez wrote in the book. “Every rapper you could think of in that era, I had heard Wendy Williams call them gay. Not one or two. Like every one of them.”
Martinez tried reaching out to Williams to hash things out but each time, she failed. Frustrated, she confronted Williams at the station.
“I lost my f–king mind,” she wrote. “Before I knew it I was swinging at her. It was a quick scuffle. It took only a few seconds for me to realize that she wasn’t really hitting me back — she was just trying to get me off of her.”
Williams grabbed a nearby mop after they were separated by a co-worker to defend herself against Martinez. Martinez wrote that Williams “just stood there with it like she wanted to have some sort of sword fight or something. It was actually kind of funny, even in the moment.”
They were both suspended from the station and Martinez claimed Williams called on her listeners to harass Martinez.
“I used to get threatening faxes . . . that said things like, B–ch, get off the radio. I’ll break your jaw,’ ” she wrote. “It was awful and it made me insecure.”
Williams was eventually fired from Hot 97, with Martinez claiming that station executives were fed up with Williams’s rude behavior.
How is the relationship between Wendy Williams and Angie Martinez today?
Martinez said that she didn’t ever run into Williams after their fight and Williams’s firing from Hot 97. She remained on Hot 97 for 25 years before leaving in 2014 to work for its rival station, Power 105.1 in New York City.
Williams left radio altogether in 2008 to transition into television. Before her hit daytime talk show, she hosted The Wendy Williams Experience on VH1 while working for the radio station WBLS in 2006.
After years of not seeing or speaking to one another, Williams interviewed Martinez in 2016 when Martinez was promoting her memoir. The two made peace but things went sour on Williams’s end after she was allegedly furious over Martinez inking a deal for her own daytime talk show.
