Is the ‘fox eye challenge’ racist? Why some Asians are giving the side eye to social media trend popularised by stars like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner
Article via SCMP
- The look, with almond-shaped eyes lifted at the outer corners, is inspired by celebrities like Bella Hadid, and tips to recreate the look are popular on TikTok
- Asians have taken to social media to call the trend out for its replication of a facial feature that, growing up, they were bullied for having
The “fox eye challenge” is a social media trend inspired by famous women, including model Bella Hadid and actress Megan Fox, who have almond-shaped eyes lifted at the outer corners to smouldering effect. The trend’s hashtag, #foxeye, has gained more than 10.1 million views on TikTok alone.
Ways to achieve the desired look include shaving off the eyebrows after the arch and redrawing them, and applying a heavy-handed cat eye with eyeliner.Shaving off the end of the brow creates a straight which makes the face appear narrower, while redrawing them with an upwards slant creates the illusion of upturned eyes. Bella Hadid uses thick black liner to make her eyes appear elongated.
Other women use more drastic measures such as brow lifts or thread lifts, in which temporary sutures lift the skin and pull the eyes into the desired shape.
The trick for success, as many videos have pointed out, is to make sure the brow is shaved from the point directly above the outer rim of the pupil, while the winged liner should be drawn at a 45-degree angle.
To complete the look, one can also contour the cheekbones and nose to create a sharper, more pointed face shape.

The fox eye look has inspired a popular photo pose, in which people deliberately pull at their eyes with their fingers and smoulder at the camera. The pose has rubbed many the wrong way.
TikTok star Melody Nafari’s (@melodynafarii) video of herself posing in this way has gained more than 1 million views and thousands of comments. Some have come from Asian social media users, such as one calling herself Sheena, who remarked: “I remember when I was in primary [school] people were making fun of Asian eyes doing this, now it’s a trend.”
Asian-American TikTok user Melissa (@chunkysdead) has been vocal about how uncomfortable the trend makes her, explaining that seeing its popularity with Caucasians – who used to pull the same face to mock her for her heritage – was unpleasant.
Just as “dimpleplasty”, a type of plastic surgery used to create dimples on the cheeks, became popular after the angelic big eye-look of Australian model Miranda Kerr was all the rage about five years ago, this look’s popularity has popularised blepharoplasty – plastic surgery that modifies the eyes.
Angelo Tsirbas, an ophthalmologist in Sydney, Australia, told Beautycrew.au that the looks of Kendall Jenner, Hadid and the Kardashians are the ones most requested by his plastic surgery patients.
This slanted-eyes trend may not have deliberately emulated the characteristic Asian feature, but many Asians see it as an act of appropriation that ignores the racism and discrimination many have faced in Western countries and communities.
View this post on Instagram throwback A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on Mar 22, 2020 at 10:28am PDT They have called the trend out for turning one of their largest childhood insecurities and traumas – their looks – on its head. Where they used to be teased and bullied for their features, how they look is now considered a new standard of beauty.
Kim Hee-jae, a student at University of California, Davis, in the United States said she was mocked in the streets by strangers for her eye shape and called a Chink, an offensive word for a Chinese person. She says that she finds it “amazing how opinion of Asians has changed so swiftly”.
“Is being Asian a trend now? It kind of feels like it is … The fox eye thing itself is probably just an aesthetic, like a beauty trend, not racism. But it doesn’t mean that we [the Asian community] don’t feel slighted. They used to insult us for that.”
Some Asians view the trend positively. John Son, a second-generation Asian-American high school student, says he feels good that Asians are gaining popularity and are being seen in a positive light.
“I feel like we’ve become the cool kids – we used to want [to be seen as more white] but now it’s the opposite, especially because of social media. So like, in the current generation of teens, everyone is more accepting and we take things as jokes, at face value. We don’t get so pressed.
“Beauty trends are just that. Trends that come and go. We’re all just people underneath it all, and I think people are starting to see that.”
‘The Goonies’ Cast Reunites 35 Years Later Thanks to Josh Gad
The cast of The Goonies reunited for the first time in more than 30 years — courtesy of Frozen star and Goonies superfan Josh Gad — to reflect on their 1985 classic, reenact beloved scenes and truffle shuffle for a good cause. (The reunion is in support of The Center for Disaster Philanthropy‘s ongoing coronavirus efforts.)
Castmembers Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin and the rest of the gang were joined by “surprise guests” Cyndi Lauper (who sang the movie’s theme), screenwriter Chris Columbus, director Richard Donner and executive producer Steven Spielberg.
Naturally, talk turned to a sequel, with Spielberg teasing future treasure hunts: “Every couple of years, we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the ’80s. Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this one 100 times.”
This reunion is the first of Gad’s weekly YouTube series, Reunited Apart. As for why he chose Goonies to kick it off? “There is one movie that defines my childhood. One movie that defines my personality. One movie that defines me,” he said.

“I Was A THOT” Gabrielle Union Advised A Young Steph And Ayesha Curry To Break Up And Sleep With Other People
Who knew that Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade and Steph and Ayesha Curry were friends? I mean it makes sense considering both of their husbands are or were in the NBA but based on a conversation the two had over Instagram Live this past weekend, there is a history there going back to the 90’s.
Dwyane jokingly shares that his wife was on some different things in 1998.
Dwyane: In 98, you was rollin. She was a thot in 98.
Gabrielle agreed.
Gabrielle: I was! Listen, I enjoyed my life. And that is the exact advice I gave to Ayesha and a young Steph at D. Rice’s 25th birthday party.
The three of them bust out laughing.
Ayesha: It all comes out!
Gabrielle: I was like, ‘You guys, the likelihood of this working out is very low. You should just break up now and have sex with other people.’ I used different language but is that not what I told y’all both?
Ayesha: You looked at me and said, ‘How old are you?…Okay…’
Gabrielle: Precisely because I was a thot.
Dwyane: I apologize on behalf of the Wade family. That’s not who we are anymore.
Gabrielle: Uh…I still might give the same advice.
Given the fact that the two met as teenagers and married in 2011, when Ayesha was 22 and Steph was 23, it doesn’t sound like ridiculous advice. Most people should hold off on long term commitments in their early twenties. But that wasn’t Steph and Ayesha’s story and thankfully they recognized what was best for them and didn’t listen to the well-intentioned Union.
The clip of the conversation, captured by The Jasmine Brand, ended with Gabrielle showering them with compliments about how they’ve remained true to their authentic selves over the years.
Gabrielle: There are very, very few people I’ve met who have been consistent. I mean, I’ve known you guys for well over a decade. There’s a lot of people who talk about faith and there’s a lot of people who talk about moving the culture forward but something isn’t real somewhere. When people are like, ‘Are they real? Are they really…?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes.’ They’re some of the only people I’ve met who have been consistent from the first time I saw them to every time I speak to you guys. Whether that’s me and Ayesha texting each other encouragement like, ‘Girl, keep your head up. You got this.’ And she returns the favor. You guys have been consistent. And I wish more people understood that it is possible to be people of faith and also wanting to move the culture forward.
You can watch the clip from this portion of their chat, in the video below.

Demi Lovato on cutting ties with her exes, including Wilmer Valderrama and Joe Jonas: I realized it ‘wasn’t healthy’
Demi Lovato is elaborating on her decision to narrow her inner circle.
The singer and actress recently revealed that she no longer speaks to Selena Gomez or exes Joe Jonas and Wilmer Valderrama — and her change in management team has been well documented. She says that trimming her circle was part of an effort to “set boundaries” as part of treatment for her 2018 near-fatal overdose. Since then she’s cut out ‘toxic people” from her life.
“I’ve had to cut a lot of toxic people out of my life over the last year,” Lovato admitted on Jameela Jamil’s I Weigh podcast. “I kind of used to have this mentality that if I had a negative experience with someone I always needed to mend it or I always needed to make things right.”
She continued, “The fact of the matter is, I’m not really friends with any of my exes today because I had to realize that that wasn’t healthy either. Trying to maintain close friendships with some of my exes just isn’t realistic. There’s actually a reason why people don’t do that.”
Lovato said, “For so long people would be like, ‘How are you still friends with your exes?’ I’d be like, ‘I don’t know! I just am.’ That was because I was afraid of fully letting go of people. Now that I’ve been able to fully let go of people, that is another thing I had to learn when it comes to cutting toxic people out of your life. If they’re an ex, it’s for a reason.”
She called “learning to set boundaries” the “steepest learning curve” she’s had. “I had to learn that by not setting boundaries, it put me in the position that I was in. Talking about every detail of every part of my life [in the press], whether it be a relationship or whether it be my recovery, nothing was sacred to me anymore.”
Lovato, who is now dating The Young and the Restless star Max Ehrich, depicted the Jonas Brothers — including ex Joe — as well as the newly engaged Valderrama in her music video for anthem “I Love Me” about moving forward. She seemed to have cordial relationships with both Joe and especially Valderrama, whom she split from in 2016 after six years together. Joe publicly wished her well after her overdose, but Valderrama visited her in the hospital and rehab as she recovered.
Lovato spoke about not being friends with Gomez, the Jonas Brothers and Valderrama in the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The comments about Gomez specifically — whom she said she loved but was no longer friends with — led to a call on social media for Lovato to be “canceled” with the hashtag “DemiLovatoIsOverParty.”
“I’ve been canceled so many times, I can’t even count,” Lovato told Jamil. “It just doesn’t even affect me anymore.”
She went on to ask, “Where is the forgiveness culture? I do, to a certain degree — there are some people, if you have used up your second and third chances … you should stay canceled. But if you mess up and you apologize and come forward and say I’ve learned from this, then let that be an example for other people so they can change too.”
She added, “Cancel culture will not work unless people have some sort of mercy. You have to be able to do that. I think if it’s somebody who refuses to learn, just has the entitlement of I can never do any wrong and I can get away with this, then yeah go ahead and cancel them.”
Lovato talked about quarantine — how she’s with family, including her mother, Dianna De La Garza, who has been obsessively cleaning the house to pass the time. She compared social isolation to a “luxurious” form of rehab — the luxury being she has a TV and phone, two things she wasn’t allowed in treatment, where her movements were also restricted.
As for her July 2018 overdose, Lovato said on the podcast that she is “still healing.” She said her “body survived something insane — a near-death experience” during the ordeal.

Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith welcome baby girl
Joshua Jackson and wife Jodie Turner-Smith are first-time parents, Page Six can reveal.
“The couple has welcomed their first child. Both mother and baby are happy and healthy,” a rep for the couple told Page Six.
The rep did not reveal the sex of the baby, but Turner-Smith set off speculation they were having a girl when she referred to the baby using the “she” pronoun last month.
“Can you see her dancing in there? Every time I try to record she stops,” she said in a video of her stomach.
The pair reportedly got hitched last year and on Feb. 14, Turner-Smith posted what looked like wedding photos of the couple and a poem by Pablo Neruda on Instagram, writing, “Happy Valentine’s Day to the man who sees my soul and holds my heart. Love you baby daddy.”
The pair have been nesting at home in LA, and “The Affair” star Jackson confessed he was nervous about being a new dad at this difficult time.
“I’ve never been a parent before, so I’m not quite sure how much of this is just first-baby anxiety and how much of this is pandemic anxiety,” he said last month.
He then told “Good Morning” on March 25, “Obviously, it’s a bit stressful right now and we’re just trying to figure out how to be smart about being quarantined. “The medical system right now is a little bit difficult, so we’re figuring it out day by day.”
Jackson added, “But she’s healthy and the baby’s healthy, so that’s important.”
The actor — who found fame in “Dawson’s Creek” — is currently starring alongside Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon in Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere” and said both moms had given him advice on being a new parent.

Demi Lovato on Her ‘Overworked’ Disney Days
Demi Lovato’s Disney days are part of her history and fans often want to know more about how that experience shaped her career and, of course, if she’s still close with her fellow Disney stars from back in the day. She revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she’s not friends with all of them anymore and opened up about how “overworked” she was at the time.
Lovato is ‘grateful’ for the time but it wasn’t easy
Lovato became a household name when she starred in the Disney original movie Camp Rock and the show Sonny With a Chance. She’s grateful for that opportunity but there were a lot of the pitfalls of fame that came with it.
In the May 2020 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Lovato addressed how being overworked played a role in her mental health, as she developed an eating disorder, experimented with drugs and alcohol, and entered rehab when she was 18.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities that I got,” Lovato acknowledged about that time. “Do I wish that I’d had more downtime? Yes. I think when you are a teenager and you’re given your big break, you’ll do anything to make it happen.”
The singer added, “I do feel that a lot of the way some of my life was handled and lived led to me kind of having a bit of a downfall, just because I was so overworked and I wasn’t dedicating enough time to my mental health or my personal life.”
She’s not still friends with all of her Disney-era pals
Lovato bonded with some of her fellow Disney Channel co-stars when she was a teen, but she’s not friends with all of them anymore. When asked about whether she and the Jonas Brothers are still in touch, “she shakes her head no,” the interviewer writes.
Her on-again/off-again relationship with Selena Gomez, who was her BFF back in the day is also over. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them,” she said of Gomez. “But I’m not friends with her, so it [Gomez praising Lovato’s Grammys performance] felt…” Lovato didn’t finish the thought, but added, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
She’s friends with Miley Cyrus
Lovato and Miley Cyrus, however, remain friends. “I talk to Miley. She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have. But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”
The two addressed their friendship during a March Instagram Live for Cyrus’ show Bright Minded: Live With Miley.
“Life is moving so fast that it’s usually hard to slow ourselves down and appreciate people in our lives, and you’ve been that person for me for so many years and we’ve been friends for so long,” Cyrus said at the time.
“I feel like you’ve always been such a light and that’s why we connected at 14. We connected then because we just saw something in each other. Maybe it was because of spirituality or maybe it was just our hearts,” she added.

Sharon Osbourne Says Simon Cowell Doesn’t Like Overweight People & “That’s Why He Turned Down Jennifer Hudson”
Sharon Osbourne has caught herself in the limelight, once again, after making new claims about Simon Cowell that have us in shock. Speaking on a recent podcast episode, Osbourne mentioned that Simon Cowell doesn’t like overweight people and overall has “dated” views. Others say that this is just another way for Sharon to uphold her shock factor personality.
Simon Cowell “Doesn’t Like People Who Are Overweight”, Says Sharon Osbourne
Sharon Osbourne recently featured as a guest on the ‘Honest AF Show’ podcast, talking about her struggles as a woman in the music industry, Ozzy Osbourne and her former boss, Simon Cowell. The TV star gave the podcast hosts a full rundown on unheard info about Cowell’s personal views, that she calls ‘outdated’.
“Simon doesn’t have an ability to see individuals. He doesn’t like people who are overweight. Seriously,” begins Osbourne. “That’s why he turned down Jennifer Hudson, that’s why he wouldn’t champion her on American Idol. But it’s the truth. He’s very dated (in his views).”
Both Sharon and Simon have worked with each other on the panel of The X Factor for many years and are known for their love/hate friendship.
This isn’t the first time that Sharon Osbourne has sparked another episode of her ongoing feud with Cowell. Just a few months ago, Osbourne appeared on Good Morning Britain to give an update on where she stands with Simon. After being reminded of the feud between them both, that has lasted years, Sharon claimed she hadn’t spoken to the TV judge in a long time. Of course, in true Sharon Osbourne fashion, she took one last poke at Cowell’s new slim figure and appearance before the interview ended.
Sources respond to Sharon’s comments, saying: “This is just not what Simon is like”
Although Sharon’s rivalry tactics seem to be nothing but light-hearted humour, sources have spoken to the Mail Online, calling Osbourne a “shock jock”. “This is just not what Simon is like. He treats every individual person equally. Instead, it feels like Sharon is just turning into a bit of a shock jock these days like her friend Howard Stern,” says the source.
However, it seems the evidence may be on Sharon’s side. Ever since she appeared on Idol, Jennifer Hudson has been open about past comments that Cowell has made about her: “Simon told me I was ‘too big’ in every way. I think he meant my hair, my voice, my personality, my songs.”
Britain’s Got Talent is officially back! The hit talent show will return to our screens this Saturday as auditions begin. Despite the live shows being postponed until a later date, producers behind the show have given the all-clear for auditions to air, nevertheless.
