HBO documentary ‘Showbiz Kids’ depicts dark side of childhood fame, from abuse to self-doubt
The new documentary “Showbiz Kids” examines the effects of childhood stardom on young celebs.
HBO’s 90-minute film (Tuesday, 9 p.m. EDT/PDT) is directed by Alex Winter, known for his role of Bill in the “Bill & Ted” films. Subjects including Jada Pinkett Smith, “E.T.” star Henry Thomas, actress Evan Rachel Wood (“Westworld”), Todd Bridges of “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Matilda” star Mara Wilson offer their takes on fame at a young age.
Their motives for becoming an actor differ. “Stand By Me” actor Wil Wheaton says he was encouraged by his mother, reasoning “I don’t know a 7-year-old who’s like, ‘What I want to do is go to work!'”
But Bridges remembers he “always wanted to be in show business.”
For some, work nudged out traditional childhood experiences. Wilson says she “never really learned how to ride a bike,” and model/actress Milla Jovovich “hated” her early days in front of the camera. At 11, she was “really a little girl that wanted to play with dolls.”
“Showbiz Kids”, shot over the past two years, also follows two young actors as they chase their dreams of making it big.

Nick Cannon apologizes for anti-semitic comments; will continue as ‘The Masked Singer’ host
Article via ChicagoTribune
Nick Cannon will continue to host Fox’s top-rated reality competition series “The Masked Singer,” the network confirmed on Wednesday. The news that Cannon would stay on “Masked Singer” comes after the host issued an apology online for anti-Semitic comments he made on a podcast.
“When we were made aware of Nick Cannon’s interview with Richard Griffin on YouTube, we immediately began a dialogue with Nick,” the network said in a statement. “He is clear and remorseful that his words were wrong and lacked both understanding and context, and inadvertently promoted hate. This was important for us to observe. Nick has sincerely apologized, and quickly taken steps to educate himself and make amends. On that basis and given a belief that this moment calls for dialogue, we will move forward with Nick and help him advance this important conversation, broadly. Fox condemns all forms of hate directed toward any community and we will combat bigotry of any kind.”
Cannon posted his apology a day after ViacomCBS terminated a long-term relationship it had with the star, which included the long-running sketch comedy series “Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘n Out.” ViacomCBS made the move following an exchange between Cannon and former Public Enemy member Professor Griff on the June 30 episode of Cannon’s podcast “Cannon’s Class.” At one point, Cannon said Black people are the “true Hebrews” and talked about anti-Semitic conspiracy theories involving the Rothschild family.
“It’s never hate speech, you can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people,” Cannon said on the podcast. “When we are the same people who they want to be. That’s our birthright. We are the true Hebrews.”
In his apology, posted on Wednesday evening, Cannon said he now felt “ashamed” for those statements; Cannon is said to have been meeting with Jewish leaders in light of the controversy. “First and foremost I extend my deepest and most sincere apologies to my Jewish sisters and brothers for the hurtful and divisive words that came out of my mouth during my interview with Richard Griffin. They reinforced the worst stereotypes of a proud and magnificent people and I feel ashamed of the uninformed and naïve place that these words came from. The video of this interview has since been removed.
“While the Jewish experience encompasses more than 5,000 years and there is so much I have yet to learn, I have had at least a minor history lesson over the past few days and to say that it is eye-opening would be a vast understatement. I want to express my gratitude to the Rabbis, community leaders and institutions who reached out to me to help enlighten me, instead of chastising me. I want to assure my Jewish friends, new and old, that this is only the beginning of my education — I am committed to deeper connections, more profound learning and strengthening the bond between our two cultures today and every day going forward.”
Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury hasn’t yet revealed whether its plans had changed regarding its new daytime talk show “Nick Cannon,” set to debut on Monday, Sept. 21, in more than 90% of U.S. local markets. The prolific Cannon is also a producer and appears in E!’s “Celebrity Call Center,” a new reality show that just launched this week. And he continues to host a daily radio show for Meruelo Media’s KPWR-FM (Power 106), which is syndicated nationally.
Cannon is also an executive producer on “Masked Singer,” and has been with the show since its launch in January 2019. “Masked Singer” became a quick hit, and a cornerstone of Fox’s schedule — so much so that the series was given the plum slot behind the Super Bowl earlier this year.
“The Masked Singer” has aired 42 episodes over three seasons so far, with Cannon as host of all of them. He also fronted “The Masked Singer: After the Mask,” an after show that aired on Fox this spring. For his work on “The Masked Singer,” Cannon was nominated for best host at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards, as well as best host for this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards. He was also part of the production team nominated last year for a Producers’ Guild award.
In a social media post early Wednesday, Cannon said he left NBC and “America’s Got Talent” (which he previously hosted) after he says he felt the network “threatened and mistreated me for years,” and that he then “took my talents and executive creativity to my open minded and willing partners at the Fox Television network to create the current #1 hit show on television “The Masked Singer” in which I host and executive produce.”
“The Masked Singer” has been in pre-production, which includes casting and prep work, but it’s not believed to have resumed taping just yet.
Cannon’s career has encompassed acting, stand-up comedy, sketch, music, radio hosting and more — with past credits including “America’s Got Talent.” He told Variety’s Cynthia Littleton earlier this year that he wasn’t looking for another network variety show to host after he ended an eight-season run on “AGT.”
“I was really meticulous about what I would want to host again in the space of nonscripted variety since I had done it on the biggest level with ‘AGT.’ I didn’t want to jump in and host another talent show,” Cannon told her.

Amber Heard was ‘Machiavellian’, claims Johnny Depp’s aide
Stephen Deuters alleged actor’s ex-wife subjected him to ‘years of abuse’ in Sun libel trial
Actress Amber Heard Admits To Hitting Johnny Depp on TAPE~The Media Shows Their Hypocrisy
Amber Heard was “sociopathic”, a “Machiavellian overlord” and the “abuser” in the relationship between her and Johnny Depp, the actor’s former personal assistant has claimed in the high court.
Stephen Deuters was giving evidence on the fifth day of Depp’s libel action against the Sun over an article that labelled him a “wife beater” and referred to “overwhelming evidence” that he attacked Heard, 34, during their relationship, which he denies.
In his written witness statement, Deuters alleged that Heard subjected Depp, 57, to “years of abuse”, and said he was “extremely surprised and outraged” when it became public that she had filed for a temporary restraining order against the Hollywood star.
Giving evidence in court on Monday Deuters was asked by Sasha Wass QC, representing News Group Newspapers, publisher of the Sun, how he felt when Depp and Heard finally split up. He agreed that he would have been “relieved”.
The barrister then read out a text from Deuters to a friend of Depp’s, the actor Paul Bettany, on 26 May 2016, which read: “That moment when everything comes home to roost and all the shit compounds itself into one monstrous steaming pile of catastrophe.
“Just trying to keep him upright at the moment. But at least the bitch is gone. Yes, I do mean Amber – not the Mom.
“Poor Betty Sue [Depp‘s mother] has been on her way out for the last six months – it was a relief to all, most of all herself.”
The next message by Deuters, apparently describing Heard, read: “Sociopathic show pony. Machiavellian overlord.
“Talentless cunt. Good riddance to bad shit. Yes, I do mean Amber not the Mom, even though she was a devil herself.”
Wass said Deuters had previously said he would not have used such a word to describe a woman, to which he replied: “I certainly regret that.”
Wass accused Deuters of being part of “a public relations initiative to discredit Ms Heard in the public eye”.
Depp’s barrister, David Sherborne, later asked Deuters how he would describe the relationship between Depp and Heard.
Deuters replied: “Not great. I think they were two people that were in love with each other that shouldn’t have been together.”
Sherborne asked: “Did you see Mr Depp hit Ms Heard at any time?
“Did you see him act violently towards Ms Heard at any time?”
Deuters replied “no” to both questions.
Sherborne then asked: “If you had seen him do so, would you have just sat back and let it happen?”
Deuters said: “Absolutely not.”
The trial continues.

‘Empire’ actor Bryshere Gray arrested on allegations he abused his wife
The 26-year-old was taken into custody after SWAT and crisis negotiators responded to his Arizona home
“Empire” actor Bryshere Gray has been arrested in Arizona on accusations he abused his wife, police said.
The Goodyear Police Department said 26-year-old Gray was booked Saturday, KPNX-TV reported.
The woman had visible injuries when she flagged someone down to ask for help near Gray’s home in the Phoenix suburb of Goodyear, saying her husband had assaulted her, police said. She told emergency responders that Gray had strangled her, according to authorities, and she was taken to a hospital.
Gray refused to leave his home when police arrived but was arrested after SWAT and crisis negotiators responded, police said.
Gray, who played Hakeem Lyon on the Chicago-based TV show, was pulled over in Chicago in 2019 after authorities said a temporary license plate didn’t match the 2014 Rolls-Royce he was driving. He was arrested on a misdemeanor registration charge and ticketed.

Tamera Mowry exits ‘The Real’ after 7 years
Tamera Mowry announced Monday she is departing “The Real” after six seasons.
“For seven years, my home and heart has been at The Real,” the 42-year-old wrote on Instagram. “The friendships that I’ve made there will last a lifetime, and the people that I’ve had the blessing to interview have changed my life for the better.”
Mowry added she is “so proud” of what the cast has accomplished, “including two well-deserved NAACP Images Awards and a Daytime Emmy.”
“However, all good things must come to an end, and it’s with a bittersweet smile that I announce that I am moving on from The Real,” Mowry continued. “To my fellow hosts, I love you, I will miss you, and I will always be there for you. Thank you for teaching me, supporting me, and loving all of me.”
Mowry said she’ll be “rooting” for her castmates from afar.
“I look forward to spending more time with my family, pursuing amazing new opportunities, and embarking on the next chapter of my life,” she concluded.
Mowry also stated that while she did not intend to address her exit Monday in the wake of Naya Rivera’s death, she wanted to be the one to break her personal news.
In response to Mowry’s post, fellow “Real” co-host Adrienne Bailon commented, “SISTERS FOREVER & EVER & EVER.”
Mowry’s husband Adam Housley also replied, “The kids and I are so very proud of everything you do. ❤️.”

Sia stopped child star Maddie Ziegler from getting on a plane with Harvey Weinstein
Singer said she has ‘always felt this extreme desire to protect’ dancer
Sia has claimed she once had to stop child star Maddie Ziegler boarding a plane with Harvey Weinstein.
Dance Moms star Ziegler, who is now 17, appeared in Sia’s award-winning “Chandelier” music video when she was 11-years old.
Sia told The Zach Sang Show she has “always felt this extreme desire to protect” Ziegler.
She said: “You know I kept her off a plane that Harvey Weinstein tried to get her on. I know there’s times where my insight has really made a difference, like kept her safe. Yeah, that was really disgusting.”
Sia said she advised Ziegler’s mother, Melissa, not to let her child on board the plane, telling her: “Please don’t, do not do that, do not do that, do not do that.”
It is unclear when this incident occurred. Weinstein, 68, is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for sexual assault and third-degree rape.
Ziegler rose to fame on the Lifetime show Dance Moms, where Sia discovered her. She will next be seen in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake.
Sia recently became a grandmother for the first time. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music earlier this week, she revealed one of her two adult sons, who she adopted in 2019, had become a father.
Paris Jackson’s upcoming portrayal of Jesus sparks backlash; thousands sign petitions objecting
Hundreds of thousands of people aren’t fans of Paris Jackson playing Jesus.
More than 274,000 people have signed a Change.org petition to prevent the distribution of the indie film “Habit,” which critics say is “Christianophobic garbage.”
“A new blasphemous Hollywood film is predicted to come out soon depicting Jesus as a lesbian woman,” reads the petition, which was created one week ago.
The 22-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson was tapped to play the role of Jesus, alongside Bella Throne and Gavin Rossdale. A press release, according to Deadline and Entertainment Tonight, said “Habit” will follow “a street smart, party girl with a Jesus fetish (who) gets mixed up in a violent drug deal and finds a possible way out; by masquerading as a nun.”
Another petition created by the group One Million Moms is also gaining steam with over 73,000 signatures denouncing the film. The group, which “stands against the immorality, violence, vulgarity and profanity the entertainment media,” accused the movie of mocking Christianity and ridiculing people of faith.
USA TODAY reached out to Jackson’s and Thorne’s reps for comment.
Following the backlash, Sia sent some support to Jackson. She tweeted: “Dear @ParisJackson I love you, keep going. I believe you are a good person.”
Jackson recently opened up about her sexuality in her new Facebook Watch series, “Unfiltered: Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn,” her boyfriend and bandmate. Despite dating a man, Jackson says she identifies as gay.
“Homosexuality, in general, is very taboo in the Black community,” Jackson says. “So that, on top of the religious aspect, it was something that I did feel like I needed to withhold for a while. And then the first time I came out to a family member they, like, didn’t believe me.”
