‘Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey addresses racist casting backlash: ‘I don’t pay attention to the negativity’
Halle Bailey, who was cast at Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, is looking for positive vibes only.
Asked about the casting backlash after it was announced she nabbed the film role — racist trolls made comments about a black actress playing Ariel, a character that was white in Disney’s animated version — Bailey, 19, told Variety she blocking out any hate.
“I feel like I’m dreaming and I’m just grateful and I don’t pay attention to the negativity,” she replied. “I just feel like this role is something bigger than me — greater — and it’s going to be beautiful. I’m just so excited to be a part of it.”
At the same event, she told Entertainment Tonight that landing the role “means so much” to her. “Ariel was one of my favorite princesses growing up so it’s a dream come true. I’m very excited and happy.”
Her classy response to the backlash was applauded on social media, where she was reminded that she has “more support than … haters.”
Bailey has had support throughout the outcry. Jodi Benson, the original actress who voiced Ariel in the 1989 animated film, said, “I think the most important thing is to tell the story. We have, as a family, raised our children and for ourselves that we don’t see anything that’s different on the outside. I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters … And no matter what we look like on the outside, no matter our race, our nation, the color of our skin, our dialect, whether I’m tall or thin, whether I’m overweight or underweight, or my hair is whatever color, we really need to tell the story.”
Sierra Boggess, who originated the role of Ariel in the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, also came to the singer’s defense.
Whyte Twitter Complains After ‘Black Actress’ Halle Bailey Is Cast As Ariel In ‘Little Mermaid’
Next up is finding out who Bailey’s co-stars in the film will be. ET asked who she thought should play Prince Eric — Harry Styles was reported “in talks” for the role — and Bailey replied, “I think that anyone would be great for it.”
She also addressed fans campaigning for Idris Elba to play Ariel’s father, King Triton. “I mean he’s awesome,” was her reply.
This week, Melissa McCarthy hinted she will be Ursula.
Before this film musical even hits screens, there will be more Mermaid coming. ABC announced The Little Mermaid Live — a live stage version based on the Broadway musical adaptation — will air on the TV network Nov. 5. It is also more representative ethically with Auli’I Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula and Shaggy as Sebastian.

‘We’ve Survived So Much’: Jada Pinkett Smith Opens Up About CPS Showing Up to Home Over Claims She Was ‘Abusing’ Willow Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith has no issues with being open and candid on her talk show. And she says the reason is that her famous family weathered the “storm” of having child protective services show up at their door.
Smith made the admission while at the Ham Yard Hotel in London hosting a screening of her Facebook Watch series “Red Table Talk” on August 1.
“We’ve been through so much as a family, it takes a lot to rock us,” she told the Daily Mail when talking about the worst thing that has ever happened to her clan. “Once you’ve survived having child protection services come to your house because someone called and said, ‘You’re abusing Willow, you’re not feeding her’ … When you’ve gone through crazy stuff like that, whatever you’ve spoke about at the ‘Red Table Talk,’ doesn’t mean anything, due to the storms you’ve survived off of that table [and being so open].
“We’ve survived so much as a family, so that’s one of the things I’m grateful for,” she added. “We hold it down together and give each other that freedom to speak our truth.”
In 2014, the Los Angeles Department of Children & Family Services showed up to the Smith family home. At issue was a photo showing a then-13-year-old Willow lying in bed with her shirtless friend, actor Moises Arias, who was 20 at the time, that was posted to his Tumblr page.
Radar Online reported the agency got involved after receiving an anonymous tip “about the welfare and safety of Willow, based on the contents of the photo.”
Smith and her husband, actor Will Smith, were cleared after CPS investigated.
A source with DCFS told Radar there was “no evidence presented that Willow has ever been in any danger around Moises, or that she has ever been physically or emotionally abused.” Additionally, they found Willow was “a very well adjusted, smart, and articulate young lady.”
Speaking to TMZ before the clearing, Jada said “there was nothing sexual about that picture or that situation. You guys are projecting your trash onto it. You’re acting like covert pedophiles, and that’s not cool.”

Wendy Williams Divorce: Andy Cohen Ends Feud With Williams With the Kindest Note
Wendy Williams, the provocative and sometimes controversial host of The Wendy Williams Show, has been making a lot of big changes since she filed for divorce from her longtime husband earlier this year. Many people are aware about the way that the divorce has changed Williams’ personal life.
For one, she moved from New Jersey to an apartment of her own in New York. Along with the new locale, she’s piecing together a new social scene and packing her schedule with events and dates. Part of this “new” life, though, seems to involve reconnecting with some old friends—some who have been intentionally distant over the years.
One such friend is Andy Cohen. The two did not speak for several years, but Cohen recently appeared on Williams’ show, and she is set to appear on his in September. What changed, and what does it mean about Williams’ life going forward?
Williams had been with her husband, Kevin Hunter, since the 1990s. They were married in 1997 and had a son three years later. While they had a very long marriage, Williams revealed in her book Wendy’s Got the Heat that Hunter was unfaithful to her shortly after their son was born.
The pair worked through that challenge, but in 2017, rumors began to swirl about Hunter’s renewed infidelity. This time, Hunter was romantically linked to a massage therapist.
In addition to these tales of cheating, many sources report that Hunter was physically abusive to Williams, including reports from Hunter’s own mother, who allegedly witnessed the abuse. Still, Williams stood by her husband and went on air in early 2019 to say that her wedding ring was staying put and that the rumors were just part of a rough patch like any normal marriage faces.
Williams moved for divorce amid personal health concerns
Just a few short months later, though, Williams served Hunter divorce papers. The final straw may have been even more rumors of infidelity.
Whatever the case, the drama was clearly taking a toll on Williams who publicly put a hiatus on her show while she dealt with health issues. Privately, those close to her suggested she was struggling with her sobriety.
Divorcing Hunter seems to have helped Williams regain control over her life, and her show is now back.
As Williams builds her new life, it seems like some of the old bridges that had been burned with former friends may also have a chance at renewal.
Hunter kept people distant
Hunter was not only Williams’ spouse. From early in their relationship, he was her manager. He was also an executive producer on her show, and he was only recently removed from that position.
Apparently, his influence on the set of the show was a huge turnoff for many people. He was reportedly very controlling about who had access to Williams, and the set in his absence is much more welcoming—if maybe a bit more chaotic.
One of those people who felt unwelcome with Hunter around was Andy Cohen.
After Williams’ divorce announcement went public, Cohen wrote Williams a letter.
In it he noted, “Your husband was not my biggest fan. But I want you to know, I’ve been cheering you on for the last six years.”
Cohen’s gesture of goodwill was enough to spark a reconnection with Williams and an eventual invitation to her show.
Many speculate that it was Hunter, not Williams, who was responsible for driving people away. Apparently, Cohen is not the only person who has reached out to Williams to let her know that any former misgivings could be set aside. Charlamagne tha God told Page Six that he, too, reached out to her following her split from Hunter.
As Williams pieces together a new life free from the influence of Hunter, it’s possible that even more relationships from her past will be rekindled, giving her the support group she needs to come out stronger than ever.

Bette Midler calls African American Trump supporters ‘blackground,’ is slammed as ‘racist’
Bette Midler is facing backlash after suggesting that President Donald Trump paid African American supporters to add “blackground” to his rally.
The outspoken Trump critic took to Twitter Wednesday to share a photo of a group of black men standing in the crowd behind Trump during one of his reelection rallies.
“Look, there are African American men in this shot! How much did he pay them to be ‘blackground’?” Midler, 73, tweeted to her 1.7 million followers.
Her remark was instantly slammed as “racist” and “really sick.”
“Wow, Bette! That’s some racist crap right there. I guess an old, white woman like yourself gets to decide what and how black people should believe and vote,” @staceybeast tweeted, while @Sammurica wrote: “People of different races are allowed to support whoever they want. Shocking, I know.”
User @derek_mafs added: “Wow this is a disgusting comment on so many levels? ‘blackground?’ Really? You are really sick, Bette.”
Midler hasn’t deleted the controversial tweet from her account, where she has since tweeted about former special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony.
She also replied to a user who posted a screengrab of her tweet and called her “#BigotBette,” writing, “Those who scream the loudest (and drop the most F-bombs)…”
Ignoring the swipe at her commentary, Midler responded to the mention of her cursing.
“As many as I feel like! Personally, I enjoy swearing. Why don’t you try it, you uptight…..ha!” she wrote.
Trump hasn’t addressed her tweet yet.
“Your wit and good nature really lifted my spirits; as a newly washed up psycho, I am very grateful for your thoughts and prayers,” she added.
Midler is a frequent and outspoken critic of Trump. The Oscar-nominated actress/singer caused waves on Nov. 14, 2018 when she went after first lady Melania Trump by sharing an image from the former model’s steamy shoot with British GQ in 2000.

Kim Kardashian CLAPS BACK @BetteMidler @ChloeGMoretz @piersmorgan for making fun of her N*DE SELFIE
Kim Kardashian finally addresses allegations against photographer Marcus Hyde
Kim Kardashian has broken her silence on the recent allegations that her personal photographer, Marcus Hyde, offered a model a free photoshoot in exchange for nude pictures.
“I have been reading all of the messages and stories from women regarding inappropriate and inexcusable behavior of a photographer that I have worked with in the past,” Kim wrote on her Instagram story on Tuesday. “My own experiences have always been professional, and I am deeply shocked, saddened and disappointed to learn that other women have had very different experiences.
“I stand in full support of every woman’s right to not be harassed, asked or pressured to do anything they are not comfortable with,” she continued. “We cannot allow this type of behavior to go unnoticed and I applaud those who speak out.”
On Monday, Los Angeles-based model Sunnaya accused Hyde of trying to bribe her into sending him nude pictures in exchange for a free photoshoot. If she didn’t send the nudes, he would’ve charged her $2,000, she claimed. Sunnaya shared screenshots of a conversation allegedly between her and Hyde that ultimately ended with him allegedly telling her to “find someone else. I’ll keep shooting celebs.”
Ariana Grande, who frequently collaborated with Hyde, slammed him over the accusations, as did Bella Thorne, drag queen Aquaria and Michelle Visage.
The famed shutterbug survived a near-fatal car crash last year. During his recovery, Kardashian and husband Kanye West donated $25,000 to alleviate his medical costs, and in April he attended West’s Sunday Service performance at Coachella.

The Lion King Movie Review
After months of advertisements and trailers, the live action adaptation of the Lion King is finally here! What do I have to say about it? Well I got one enjoyed it, and here’s why!
Let me just start off by saying that no it’s obviously not better than the original, however the movie itself is still great. Seeing the opening in live action was absolutely breathtaking. Yes; all the scenery in the movie is gorgeous. Pride rock looked spot on, the lions looked amazing, they definitely went all out af far as visual effects.
Now let’s get onto the voice acting. The voice acting to me was mostly good, MOSTLY. There were some line to me that did fall a little flat. James Earl Jones as always is still great as Mufasa, Donald Glover killed it as Simba, Scar was great. and Beyoncé wasn’t too cringy as Nala. The stand outs were Timon and Pumba since they got mostly new dialogue.
All in all when not comparing it to the original it’s a really great film. I for one plan on seeing it again, Lion King was a big part of my childhood and I still consider it a big part of my life today. On a scale of 1-10 I give it an 8! If you haven’t seen Lion King; go see it this weekend!
