SpongeBob Squarepants Is A ‘Violent,’ ‘Racist’ Colonizer, College Professor Says
You know you know the answer. It’s SpongeBob SquarePants, the iconic cartoon character loved by kids and adults alike, who on Friday turned 20 years old.
The animated sponge spends his days getting into wacky adventures along with his buddies Patrick Starfish, Squidward Tentacles, and Mr. Krabs. And without speaking down to children, the lovable, absorbent square doles out some life lessons along the way.
But a University of Washington professor thinks SpongeBob is violent and racist.
Yes, seriously.
Holly M. Barker has penned a piece titled, “Unsettling SpongeBob and the Legacies of Violence on Bikini Bottom.”
“Billions of people around the globe are well-acquainted with SpongeBob Squarepants and the antics of the title character and his friends on Bikini Bottom. By the same token, there is an absence of public discourse about the whitewashing of violent American military activities through SpongeBob’s occupation and reclaiming of the bottom of Bikini Atoll’s lagoon. SpongeBob Squarepants and his friends play a role in normalizing the settler colonial takings of Indigenous lands while erasing the ancestral Bikinian people from their nonfictional homeland,” reads the abstract for Barker’s piece.
Barker’s abstract asserts that SpongeBob has colonized Bikini Bottom — the underwater home to the lovable characters — and claims the cartoon is “whitewashing” the “violent American military activities” against natives on Pacific islands, specifically the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, used by the U.S. military for nuclear testing:
This article exposes the complicity of popular culture in maintaining American military hegemonies in Oceania while amplifying the enduring indigeneity (Kauanui 2016) of the Marshallese people, who maintain deeply spiritual and historical connections to land — even land they cannot occupy due to residual radiation contamination from US nuclear weapons testing — through a range of cultural practices, including language, song, and weaving. This article also considers the gendered violence of nuclear colonialism and the resilience of Marshallese women.
The Bikini Atoll remains uninhabitable, and some conspiracy theorists claim the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants were mutated by the testing.
Barker declares that as an “American character” allowed to live there, SpongeBob showed his privilege of “not caring about the detonation of nuclear bombs.”
“SpongeBob’s presence on Bikini Bottom continues the violent and racist expulsion of Indigenous peoples from their lands (and in this case their cosmos) that enables U.S. hegemonic powers to extend their military and colonial interests in the postwar era,” she wrote.
Barker even rips the theme song, saying it denounces Bikini Bottom as full of “nautical nonsense.”
“The song’s directives, ensconced in humor, provide the viewer with an active role in defining Bikini Bottom as a place of nonsense, as the audience is instructed ‘If nautical nonsense be something you wish… drop on the deck and flop like a fish,’ ” she wrote.
Barker says the children’s show is full of gender bias as well, writing, “all of the main characters on the show are male.” Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel that lives underwater with the aid of an old-fashioned diving suit, is, of course, a female, but Barker says she’s just a token.
In conclusion, Barker writes, “We should be uncomfortable with a hamburger-loving American community’s occupation of Bikini’s lagoon and the ways that it erodes every aspect of sovereignty.”
Nautical nonsense, indeed.

Transgender Activist Mentioned In Dave Chappelle’s ‘Sticks & Stones’ Netflix Special Dies
A transgender comedienne, actress and activist who was referenced in Dave Chappelle’s Sticks & Stones Netflix special has died.
Daphne Dorman, who lived in San Francisco, died by suicide, according to the Office of Transgender Initiatives for the City & County of San Francisco.
In a “hidden extra” of the Netflix special, Chappelle talked about becoming friends with a transgender woman.
Dorman confirmed that she was the person Chappelle was referring to, even changing her Twitter bio to reflect it:
“Yep, I’m the Daphne that Dave Chappelle is talking about in Sticks & Stones,” she wrote, adding “Actress. Activist. Author. Advocate. Amazon.”
Chappelle claimed that Dorman was “laughing the hardest” at the jokes. But not everyone was laughing. Some claimed the comedy was transphobic.
Dorman posted a goodbye message on Facebook on Friday. “I’ve thought about this a lot before this morning. How do you say “goodbye” and “I’m sorry” and “I love you” to all the beautiful souls you know? For the last time.”

Demi Moore says she was raped at age 15 by a man who paid her mother $500
Demi Moore said she was raped at age 15 by a man who paid her alcoholic mother $500 for the unspeakable act.
The 56-year-old opened up about the shocking episode, which she initially detailed in her new memoir “Inside Out,” with Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America” Monday.
Moore has dedicated the book to her three daughters as well as her troubled mother, who died in 1998.
DEMI MOORE’S SPLIT FROM ASHTON KUTCHER WAS ‘A NIGHTMARE’ AND ‘TOOK HER YEARS TO GET OVER’: REPORT
According to the actress, the incident took place when she came home one night and an older man she and her mother knew was in the apartment. After he raped her, Moore says the man asked her how it felt “to be whored by your mother for $500.”
“I think, in my deep heart no — I don’t think it was a straightforward transaction,” Moore told the television journalist about whether she felt her mother sold her.
“But she still — she did give him the access and put me in harm’s way,” Moore shared.
Moore’s upbringing was far from loving. The star said both her parents suffered from alcoholism and the family moved across the country frequently as they faced debt. Moore said she was 12 when her mother first attempted suicide.
“I remember using my fingers, the small fingers of a child, to dig the pills my mother had tried to swallow, out of her mouth,” Moore recalled in her book.
Moore also told Sawyer, 73, that her mother attempted suicide “many, many times.” The actress also learned that the man she believed and loved as a dad was not her biological father. Moore then told herself that “I wasn’t wanted, or that I don’t deserve to be here.”
After Moore’s parents divorced, she lived with her mother, who would bring her along to bars in hopes of attracting men.
Attempting to escape her shattered childhood, Moore dropped out of high school and left her home. It was then when she decided to attend acting auditions despite lack of training.
“I mean, I was figuring it out, by the seat of my pants,” said Moore. “The school of ‘fake it till you make it… I don’t have anything to lose. I don’t have anything, so why not?”
Moore’s big break came at age 19 with a role in the soap opera “General Hospital.” Moore said she was in over her head and started using alcohol and later cocaine to cope with her fears. And like her parents, Moore suffered from blackouts.
“I don’t have an off switch,” recalled Moore. “I don’t have the thing that says, ‘This is enough.’”
Then in 1984, Moore earned the role of party girl Jules in the 1985 film “St. Elmo’s Fire.”
“I mean, I think the irony certainly was not lost on me,” said Moore.
Moore said she easily identified with her character and that the film’s producer and director insisted that she go to rehab. Moore committed to sobriety and her pledge lasted “almost 20 years” until she reached her 40s, when she relapsed.
“[It was] a profound gift that they gave me,” she said, speaking about sobriety.
Moore’s career in Hollywood skyrocketed, but not without its challenges. When Moore was cast in 1992’s “A Few Good Men,” opposite Tom Cruise, a studio executive insisted for their characters to have a romance.
“[The studio executive asked], ‘If there wasn’t gonna be a sex scene, then, you know, why was I in it?’” said Moore.
Ultimately, Moore defied expectations and became the highest paid actress in Hollywood, with a $12.5 million salary. She said some critics consequently gave her the nickname “Gimme Moore.” She chose to ignore them.
“Why shouldn’t I?” said Moore. “Why shouldn’t all women be paid equal to the quality of the work they’re doing? Just treat me the same. No better, no worse.”

RHOA Star Kenya Moore and Husband Marc Daly Split After 2 Years of Marriage
Kenya Moore will be twirling on her own.
PEOPLE can exclusively reveal the Real Housewives of Atlanta star and her husband Marc Daly have split, a little over two years after saying their “I dos.”
Moore, 48, and Daly, 49, have been married since June 2017, when they tied the knot in a romantic sunset ceremony on a St. Lucia beach.
Their separation comes less than a year after Moore gave birth to their first child, daughter Brooklyn Doris Daly, on Nov. 4, 2018.
In exclusive statements to PEOPLE, both Moore and Daily asked for privacy.
“It is with profound sadness that I regret to inform my fans that I am divorcing my husband Marc Daly,” Moore said. “Due to recent and ongoing circumstances, I can no longer continue in the marriage. My sole concern and focus is and will always be my daughter, Brooklyn, my miracle baby. She was made in love and true commitment. I ask for our privacy to be respected moving forward.”
Said Daly: “I have come to the difficult decision to separate from Kenya at this time. Our daughter has two parents that love her very much and in her best interests, this situation should remain as private as possible. I cherish our family’s good times together and will continue to co-parent in a loving way. Rumors, innuendo or false accusations only serve to hurt our family and will be addressed through counsel as the law permits. Please respect our privacy during this challenging period.”
Moore and Daly were together as recently as Tuesday night, when they attended a benefit reception he hosted in honor of the Black Man Lab at the Wimbish House in Atlanta.
And on Monday, Moore, Daly, and baby Brooklyn were together in New York City for an episode of The Tamron Hall Show — their first television appearance as a family.
It was also a rare appearance for Daly, who only appeared briefly on RHOA with Moore in season 10 before her exit from the show. She’ll be back for season 12, which is being filmed now.)
On Tamron Hall, Moore called Daly “the love of my life” as he recounted how he supported her through her long IVF process.
“It’s incredibly challenging because the success rate for these these treatments are very low,” he said. “There’s expectations, but you also have to be prepared for disappointed. So just being there, being supportive, being hopeful, being positive and just being behind her was what it’s all about.”
In an exclusive interview about their nuptials in June 2017, Moore told PEOPLE that their bond was nearly instantaneous.
“I’ve never experience a first date like this before,” she gushed. “You know when you meet people, and you like them or have good chemistry with them but you don’t feel like the world has changed? I felt like the earth moved after our first date.”
The two first met through mutual friend (and fellow Bravolebrity) chef Roblé Ali back in June 2016, though they didn’t start dating until December of that year.
“I probably would have married him in 30 days, the feeling was that strong,” she said of their first date. “But we wanted to wait and get to know each other and make sure it wasn’t an infatuation. We needed to make sure it was actually real.”

Aaron Carter accuses late sister Leslie of sexual abuse
Police are investigating the concerns leveled by Aaron Carter‘s family after he claimed he was sexually abused by his sister, Leslie.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is aware of recent media reports regarding family members concerned about the welfare of Aaron Carter,” a spokesperson told Page Six on Thursday. “We are currently investigating the concerns of all parties involved, and utilizing all available resources to assist family members in addressing their concerns.”
On Thursday, the “Sooner or Later” crooner, 31, made the allegations against his late sister on Twitter.
“It runs in the family. I never wanted to tell anyone this. But I have too [sic]…,” Aaron began a series of tweets. “My sister Leslie suffered from bipolar and took lithium to treat it. She never liked the way it made her feel and when she was off of it she did things that she never meant to do I truly believe that. I was 10 years old….”
“My sister raped me from the age of 10 to 13 years old when she wasn’t on her medications and I was absused [sic] not only sexually by her but by my first two back up dancers when I was 8 years old. And my brother absused [sic] me my whole life.”
Leslie died in 2012 from a drug overdose. She was 25.
Aaron’s claims were published after he handed over two assault rifles on Wednesday. He told TMZ he gave them up because he assumed police would come to his house to seize the weapons after his brother Nick took out a restraining order against him.
Aaron noted he kept his shotgun and pistol for protection.
The Backstreet Boys member Nick, 39, said he filed a restraining order against Aaron after, he claims, Aaron confessed to harboring intentions of killing Nick’s pregnant wife, Lauren Kitt, and their unborn child.
“In light of Aaron’s increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child, we were left with no choice but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family,” Nick tweeted this week.
“We love our brother and truly hope he gets the proper treatment he needs before any harm comes to himself or anyone else.”
Aaron was ordered to stay 100 yards away from Nick, his wife, their kids, other family members and their residence in Las Vegas.

“The Rookie” Producers Find No “Inappropriate” Behavior In Star’s Accusations
She quit the show after saying she experienced racial and sexual harassment.
The Rookie star Afton Williamson made some scathing accusations against a number of people involved with the ABC series. Afton, who portrayed the character Talia Bishop on the show, claimed that she experienced racial discrimination, sexual harassment, bullying, and was the target of inappropriate comments. She said that she reported her encounters to those in charge, including Human Resources, but nothing was done to correct any behaviors.
“During the Season, it continued along with Sexual Harassment from a recurring guest star,Demetrius Grosse, and the racist commentary & bullying from the Hair Dept.Head, Sally Ciganovich escalated into Sexual Assault at our Wrap party,” Afton wrote back in August. “The Sexual Harassment though reported directly to the Showrunner/EP remained undocumented and was not reported to HR as promised.Ciganovich was fired ONLY after the sexual assault and NOT for an entire year of outward racism/racially charged language and bullying behavior in and out of the Hair and Makeup trailer. HR protocol was never adhered to following the above reports given by me to my Showrunner/EP and an investigation was never issued for any of my claims.”
Later, it was announced that Afton quit the series because of her conflicts, and a formal investigation was launched by production to find out if there was any legitimacy behind her claims. On Tuesday, Variety shared an official statement by Entertainment One, also known as eOne, that stated they determined that nothing inappropriate occurred on set. The company shared that they used a third-party law firm to examine the evidence and investigate close to 400 hours of interviews.
“As a result of the independent investigation, we have concluded that those identified in Ms. Williamson’s allegations did not conduct themselves in an unlawful manner or demonstrate behavior inappropriate for the workplace,” eOne stated. “It was also concluded that the executive producers, including showrunner Alexi Hawley, addressed matters of which they were made aware promptly and in a fair and reasonable manner.”
They added, “We recognize and respect that as individuals, the lens through which we view situations, interactions and comments, can differ based on our experiences and perspectives. As such, we regret that Ms. Williamson’s time on the series was not a positive one for her, and we respect her decision to move on to other projects.”
A spokesperson for ABC also released a statement on behalf of the network. “We are glad that eOne has completed an investigation into allegations on the set of ‘The Rookie.’ We are confident that eOne takes these matters seriously and that they will continue to look for the best ways to surface concerns and address complaints.” The second season of The Rookie premieres on September 29.
