Terry Crews Apologizes to Gabrielle Union for Defending ‘America’s Got Talent’
Terry Crews has issued a public apology to Gabrielle Union over comments he made regarding the former “America’s Got Talent” judge’s exit from the reality competition series.
“I told @KevinHart4real a while ago, he needed 2 “acknowledge the pain of other people.” Right now I have to do the same thing. I want to apologize for the comments I made. I realize there are a lot of Black women hurt and let down by what I said and also by what I didn’t say,” Crews tweeted Friday.
“I hear you, I respect you and understand you. I am sorry and I am here to support you. I spoke from my own personal point of view without first taking into consideration someone else’s experience,” he continued. “I allowed disrespectful comments directed at me and my family to cause me to react angrily instead of responding thoughtfully. This certainly caused more harm, and it is my hope that I can amend any pain I have caused to those who were hurt by my words.”
The “AGT” host went on to address Union directly.
“@itsgabrielleu, I want you to know it was never my intention to invalidate your experience– but that is what I did. I apologize. You have been through a lot in this business, and with that I empathize with the struggle toward fairness and equality in the workplace,” he continued.
Crews was interrupted by “The 3rd Hour of Today” hosts and asked if he had spoken to Union amid the controversy to which he responded, “I have not. I haven’t reached out, but I haven’t heard anything.”
He then said that his wife told him, “Well if she hasn’t made a statement, why would you?”
You can watch the original video of Crews’ comments here.
It was announced on Nov. 22 that Union, along with fellow “AGT” judge Julianne Hough, would not be returning for next year’s Season 15. Union’s contract was not renewed following several behind-the-scenes incidents and what showrunners described as “difficult” behavior, Vulture reported. For more background on Union’s exit, read here.

Why Jodie Turner-Smith & Joshua Jackson Won’t Raise Kids in the U.S.: ‘White Supremacy Is Overt’
“The racial dynamics over here are fraught,” Jodie Turner-Smith says in a new interview
As Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson prepare to welcome their first child together, the couple is contemplating putting down roots abroad.
In an interview with the Sunday Times published last weekend, the pregnant Queen & Slim star, 33, opened up about her relationship with the Affair actor and revealed they’re considering raising their baby elsewhere.
“The racial dynamics over here are fraught. White supremacy is overt. It’s the reason I don’t want to raise my kids here,” Turner-Smith told the publication. She added: “I don’t want my kids to grow up doing active shooter drills at school.”
As to where they’ll possibly go?
“England has gone off the rails,” the British actress said, “so I was thinking maybe Canada.” (Jackson, 41, was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.)
Last month, Turner-Smith and Jackson tied the knot after picking up a marriage license in August. Still, she wouldn’t confirm the matrimony to the publication.
“I haven’t said to anybody, ‘Yeah, we got married’, ” she said. “People are assuming whatever they want, but when people tell me ‘Congratulations’, I say ‘Thank you’. ”
The daughter of Jamaican parents, Turner-Smith was raised in Peterborough, England. She recalled being one of the only black children in her village school, aside from her siblings. After her parents divorced, her mother relocated to Gaithersburg, Maryland, with her, her brother and half-sister.
“So I was really excited when I came to America about meeting black people. But it was a huge culture shock, because I was rejected by the black community. They were like, ‘You talk like a white girl.’ People would call me an Oreo. All I wanted was acceptance,” she said.
When she moved to the U.S., Turner-Smith said she “would practice in the mirror, talking in a way that I thought was like black American: cutting you down with my words in five seconds if you came for me.”
Turner-Smith said she still experiences prejudice because of her skin color.
“There was this wave of people who were upset that I was possibly married to a white man,” she said. “In America interracial dating or marriage is not something that is as accepted. Certain people feel strongly against it, in both communities. I felt it from the black community. It is so complicated. I don’t want to give it too much energy. The horrific things that people were saying, it makes you. … I’m learning there are certain things I have to really keep for myself.”
Any criticism doesn’t impact the love she and Jackson share.
“We are obsessed with each other,” said Turner-Smith, who admitted she “went back and rewatched a lot of [Joshua’s] movies. I do it whenever we’re apart because I miss him so much. He loves that I am obsessed with him.”
Referencing her pregnancy, she added, “Joshua tells me every day, ‘The way you’re handling this is incredible.’ He’s more tired than I am.”
Earlier this month, the actors made their first major appearance as a married couple when they attended W Magazine‘s Best Performances pre-Golden Globes party at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood.
“Jackson was extra attentive to his wife Turner-Smith as he escorted her around the party,” a source later told PEOPLE.

Tyler Perry Has Always Hated Playing Madea & Can’t Wait To Hang Up His Wig
It’s a wrap for Mabel Simmons.
Article via HotNewHipHop
She may have helped Tyler Perry build a $2 billion franchise, but Mabel Earlene “Madea” Simmons is a character that the media mogul can’t wait to see in the rearview mirror. For years, Perry has shared that he was giving up his beloved Madea character to work on other projects, but after fans publicly expressed how she impacted their lives, Perry continued on with the character.
However, all good things must come to an end, and Madea’s final days are quickly approaching. In an interview with Level, a publication geared toward men of color over 30, Perry was asked if he misses Madea. “Nope. I don’t,” he said matter-of-factly. The interviewer wanted to know if there was even a little part of Perry that wanted to revive his character for one more ’round. “No. We have a few more weeks of the Farewell Tour and then I’m done.”
Madea may have brought in the laughs—and a good-sized bankroll—but she was never a favorite of Perry’s. “It was never something I enjoyed doing,” he said. “My hand to God. I hated the costume, the wig, all of it.” The only reason Perry even thought of doing a female impersonation in his act was because of the successes of another comedy actor.
“I was scared to death!” he said of creating Madea and donning the wardrobe for the first time. “I watched Eddie Murphy and how he did his female characters. I said I’ll try it once and that’s it.” The rest is history. Are you a Madea fan?

Rev Run Surprised Daughter Angela Simmons Isn’t Dating: “Is It Really That Crazy?”
Getting back into the dating game is difficult enough after a breakup. However, if you’re ex-fiancé-father of your child was also murdered, finding love once again may prove to be a near-impossible feat. Angela Simmons has been squarely focused on single motherhood since her ex, Sutton Tennyson, was gunned down in front of his home back in November 2018, but her father wants to know when she’ll take another shot at love.
She’s been rumored to have been romantically tied to Bow Wow and Romeo Miller, but Angela is flying solo and shared that it’s been a struggle finding a man. “I’m in an industry that’s very like, small, kind of,” Angela told her dad on Growing Up Hip Hop. After agreeing with her, Angela continued, “Your options are limited and I’m always working. Where am I going to meet anyone?” The scene cut to the green-screen interview where Angela added that being the child of a preacher comes with expectations to look and act a certain way. “There’s a certain way to walk with Christ but like, my way is not always your way.”
Rev Run suggested to Angela that she could go on a dating app, but she said she already tried it. The app she used was specifically for industry professionals and invite-only. Still, she couldn’t find anyone worthy of her attention. “Is it really that crazy?” Run asked. “I think the world has changed. Back when I was in, well, 10th, 11th, 12th grade, it was never a pretty girl that would think about, ‘I have to go find a guy.’“
“A girl like that would never be on an app, so I just don’t know what happened between when I was young—” Run continued before Angela interrupted and said, “Instagram!” She tried explaining why DMs are the downfall of dating, but Run didn’t understand. “That should fix it,” he said. “Someone should be able to get in your DMs.”
Angela complained that “serial dating” is also a problem because people date more than one person at a time without commitment. “I’ve got [my son] on my mind and anyone who comes around me has to be triple amazing for him,” Angela said. “He’s impressionable.” Check out the clip below.

Harriet True Story: What The Underground Railroad Movie Gets Right & Changes
Article via ScreenRant
Harriet tells the heroic true story of Harriet Tubman, who helped free dozens of slaves along the Underground Railroad — but how much of it is true?
Harriet tells the remarkable true story of one of the country’s most heroic people, Harriet Tubman, who, in the face of bigotry and servitude, helped bring dozens of enslaved people to freedom — but how much did the Underground Railroad movie get right, and how much was exaggerated or tampered with to fit the big screen? Directed by Kasi Lemmons — who’s perhaps most known for her supporting roles in the horror classics The Silence of the Lambs and Candyman — from her co-written screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard, Harriet stars Cynthia Erivo in the titular performance, headlining a cast that also includes Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, and Clarke Peters.
While it is undoubtedly an integral part of the American narrative, the country’s slavery era and the Civil War is a period that is largely ignored by Hollywood, at least in comparison with other war-torn times in history. However, Harriet, which is being recognized early in the awards season for its devoted lead performance, is joining that relatively small class of award-worthy films dedicated to telling stories about this dark chapter in the country’s history. Included amongst those are Edward Zwick’s 1989 film Glory, Steve McQueen’s harrowing 12 Years A Slave, Anthony Minghella’s romantic drama Cold Mountain, and Steven Spielberg’s presidential biopic Lincoln.
Harriet Tubman, considering her mammoth efforts to preserve the ideals of freedom among her fellow slaves, has hardly received the level of attention she deserves. Harriet is a well-earned step in the right direction; though Lemmons does take some considerable liberties with its characters, as well as the timeline of Tubman’s life. The film is, on a basic level, the true story behind Harriet, one of the most important stories to be told on film in 2019.
Minty As A Slave & Her First Escape As Harriet
As seen in Harriet, Tubman grew up on a farm in Dorchester County, Maryland, where she was born Araminta “Minty” Ross. Despite what the film suggests — that the name “Harriet” came to her as a tangible acknowledgement of her freedom — it seems that Tubman had the name long before then, back when she was first married to her husband John (portrayed in the film by Zackary Momoh). Though her owners continued to acknowledge her as Minty, as evidenced by posted advertisements for her return.
The film also brings up a legal question as to Minty’s freedom before she escapes. Early on in Harriet, Minty and John hire a lawyer to investigate the will left behind by the great-grandfather of her owner, Edward Brodess, that supposedly claimed that the day Minty’s mother turned 45, she and her children would be set free; a claim Brodess tears up in his slaves’ faces. In reality, while Tubman did hire a lawyer to investigate the will, the document actually stipulated that Harrier and her siblings would be set free when they themselves turned 45 — not at the same time as their mother.
In real life and in the movie, Edward Brodess died not long after that, sparking Minty’s escape into action. Soon before his father’s death, Brodess’ son Gideon (Alwyn) caught Minty praying for Edward’s death, and when the prophecy appeared to have come true, Gideon decided to put her up for sale. As it turns out, while Minty really did pray for the death of her master, Gideon is just one of the many Southern characters who were conceived for the dramatic and narrative purposes of the movie. She was more than likely put up for sale due to the financial bind the plantation owners were put in after Brodess’ death.
Soon after the possibility of being involuntarily sold away from her family — as three of her sisters were long before — came to light, Harriet decided to leave them voluntarily in a plight for freedom. Her father helped her tap into the Underground Railroad through a local black preacher, based on the real life preacher Reverend Samuel Green, and after an almost 100-mile journey, Harriet Tubman made it to Philadelphia as a free woman; her reaction in the film, with her looking at her hands, is accurate by Tubman’s own account.
Harriet As A Conductor On The Underground Railroad
Once in Philadelphia, Harriet is directed to the black abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor William Still (Odom Jr.). Just as he had in Harriet, Still really did keep a detailed records of practically every escaped slave he had encountered (he would eventually publish them as The Underground Railroad Records). However, because Still destroyed many of his notes before the Civil War — more than likely out of fear of retaliation brought on by the Fugitive Slave Act, which was put into action only a few months after Tubman’s initial escape — there is no proof that Still greeted Tubman upon her arrival to Philadelphia, though there are notes that indicate the two worked very closely together. Similarly, the character of Marie Buchanon (Monáe), a free black woman and business owner and helps teach Tubman how to live as a free woman herself, was completely fictional.
But even so, Harriet Tubman’s life in Philadelphia was distracted, if not unhappy. With the rest of her family stuck in Maryland, she felt like “a stranger in a strange land.” So, not long after making it to Philadelphia, Tubman decided to venture back to the hostile land she had just escaped from to extract her loved ones — including four of her brothers, her parents and a niece. As seen in the film, her husband, thinking that Harriet had died, re-married and opted to stay behind in Maryland; and two of her brothers retreated back to the plantation after initially running away with her. Her younger sister Rachel was the only one of her family members she didn’t have the chance to help escape — she tragically died before Tubman had the opportunity to bring her to freedom.
But even so, Tubman became a regular “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, steered by the visions she really did think were visions from God (though were more than likely a result of the dent in her head from abuse by her masters). Between 1850 and 1860, armed with a gun, she made 13 ventures to Maryland, helping over 70 people reach freedom. As seen in Harriet, because of the financial distraught she brought onto her former homeland, she was described by Maryland slave owners as “Moses” until they found out her identity. In that light, though the slave catcher Bigger Long (Omar Dorsey) was not real as well, though the character was a representation of the black slave catchers who did exist in the 19th century South.
Harriet During & After The American Civil War
At the very end of Harriet, the audience sees the titular hero at the forefront of a Union battalion, preparing them to take part in the Combahee River Raid. During this, Tubman, who was also a nurse, spy and scout for the Union Army, helped destroy Confederate supply lines and rescue about 750 fugitive slaves.
This, like most of the film, is accurate. As is the postscript, which describes Harriet Tubman as the first woman in history to lead an armed military raid. She died at the age of 91, surrounded by loved ones.

Rob Kardashian Seeks Primary Custody of Dream, Claims Blac Chyna ‘Spends $600 on Alcohol’ Daily: Report
Rob Kardashian allegedly claimed in a sealed court filing that Blac Chyna is “drunk all the time”
Rob Kardashian has reportedly filed for primary custody of his 3-year-old daughter Dream, claiming in a sealed court filing that his ex Blac Chyna is “out of control.”
Rob, 32, allegedly claims in the court filing obtained by TMZ that Chyna, née Angela Renée White, is constantly hosting parties at her home while Dream is present. TMZ also reports he alleges that Chyna “snorts cocaine,” is always drunk and that she even spends “$600 on alcohol” daily.
PEOPLE had not independently reviewed the alleged court filings and representatives for Rob and Chyna dod not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
According to the outlet, Rob accuses Chyna of being violent, citing one occasion where Chyna, 31, allegedly threw “sharp objects” at her hairdresser.
Rob also claims that Chyna’s alleged partying ways have affected Dream’s behavior as the child now allegedly uses foul language and is violent with other children, the website reports. Rob’s sister Khloé Kardashian also reportedly made a statement in the filing, claiming that Dream has been “decidedly more aggressive” lately and says she doesn’t want to go home to Chyna, TMZ reported.
Rob is seeking to have Chyna’s parenting time reduced to just weekends with a nanny present, according to the filing obtained by TMZ.
Rob’s filing comes a few months after Chyna revealed that she and the reality star were on good terms and were working together to coparent Dream.
“I just feel like having a good relationship with the other parent and coparenting is a healthy type of thing,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s something that a lot of people need to practice.”
Rob tweeted in February 2019 that the dust had settled, and the two were on good terms.
“Angela and I are both actively co-parenting and there are no pending or active custody cases,” he wrote.
The former couple agreed to joint custody in September 2017 following a whirlwind romance and failed engagement that culminated with both alleging abuse in separate lawsuits.
In July 2017, Chyna accused the reality star of violating California’s revenge porn laws by posting graphic and expletive-ridden content about her — including three naked photos — while accusing her of drug/alcohol abuse and infidelity. Chyna also claimed in court documents obtained by PEOPLE that he allegedly hit her and threatened to kill himself multiple times.
At the time, a judge later granted her a set of restraining orders against him, and that lawsuit has not yet been settled. Meanwhile, Rob previously denied the allegations of verbal and physical abuse made by Chyna and claimed that Chyna “did not suffer any injury or harm as a result of any conduct” by him in court documents.
However, in June, tension began brewing between the exes after Chyna called out Kardashian from preventing Dream from appearing on her show The Real Blac Chyna.
Chyna shared a lengthy statement on social media after TMZ reported that Rob and his lawyer Marty Singer told her in a letter that Dream could not appear on The Real Blac Chyna without Ron’s consent.
“As Executive Producer of my show, It is very unfortunate that Rob could not simply have an adult conversation with me ‘the mother of his child,’ Dream Kardashian appearing on my show ‘The Real Blac Chyna,’” wrote Chyna, who also shares 6-year-old son King Cairo with ex Tyga.
“Had Rob contacted me directly rather than through his attorney Marty Singer, Rob would have learned about Dream participation in the show,” she continued, adding that she “would never allow” Dream to be “subjected to long hours on the set.”
