An NFL rookie was shot just hours after he was drafted by the New York Giants
Corey Ballentine went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows over the weekend.
Despite playing football at a low-profile Division II school, Ballentine was drafted by the NFL’s New York Giants on Saturday night, the culmination of years of hard work on and off the field.
“I’ve been waiting on this opportunity for a lifetime really,” he told Giants coach Pat Shurmur after hearing the news.
But in a tragic turn just hours later, Ballentine was injured in an off-campus shooting in Topeka, Kansas, that killed one of his Washburn University teammates.
Dwane Simmons, a 23-year-old defensive back, was killed in the shooting, said Washburn President Jerry Farley.
Farley said Ballentine, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Giants, is expected to make a full recovery.
“Both Dwane and Corey have been great examples and representatives of the football team and of Washburn University in general,” Farley said in a statement. “This was a terrible way to end a day which should have been a day of celebration and a day to look forward to Dwane’s upcoming year at Washburn and the beginning of Corey’s professional career.”
The Giants said they are aware of the situation and are gathering information.
“We have spoken to Corey, and he is recovering in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons’ family, friends and teammates and the rest of the Washburn community,” the team said.
Ballentine, a six-time member of his conference’s Academic Honor Roll, was the 180th person taken in the 2019 NFL draft.
“It’s all a crazy dream until you do it,” he tweeted. “I can’t even explain the emotions I have right now. (Shoutout) the people that told me to pick a more realistic career. This is as real as it gets. Thank you to the Giants organization for believing in me. It’s only up from here. #GiantsPride.”
In a video posted to the Giants website, Ballentine told Shurmur how happy he was to join the NFL team.
“I’m glad to be a part of this franchise. I’ve been waiting on this opportunity for a lifetime really,” he said. “I’m glad to be even a part of the conversation. I’m definitely ready to start learning and being around the guys and being around you guys.”
“Well, you’re not in the conversation,” coach Shurmur said with a smile. “You’re in the locker room now.”

Father accused of forcing 4-year-old son to drink hot sauce for cursing
LEANDER, Texas – A Texas father is accused of assaulting his 4-year-old son on Easter Sunday and force-feeding the boy hot sauce.
Jail records show Demitro Revillas was booked Monday on a felony count of intentional bodily injury of a child.
Police said a cousin told investigators that Revillas became furious after hearing that his son had cursed, and slapped him with an open hand hard enough to knock him to the ground, according to an arrest warrant obtained by KXAN.
When the child refused to admit he had cussed, Revillas became enraged and allegedly took his son into the kitchen and forced him to drink hot sauce for several minutes as his son cried out for him to stop.
The cousin told officers she could hear him choking on the spicy condiment.
The boy later told police that Revillas also hit him in the face with a belt, according to the warrant. An officer reported seeing bruising on the boy’s face.
Revillas is being held at the Williamson Count Jail on a $40,000 bond.

Florida Man Attacks Mattress in a Fit of Jealous Rage After Smoking Meth, Faces Charges
An apparently hallucinating Florida man used a bedpost to attack a mattress where he thought a man was hiding.
In a Facebook post, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s office quotes the girlfriend of 37-year-old Felipe Oquendo as saying that he began acting erratically early Friday. The girlfriend told deputies Oquendo thought she was cheating on him with a man he thought he saw in the mattress at their Fort Walton Beach home.
She said Oquendo hit the mattress with a bed post, ripped it apart with his bare hands and locked the bedroom door. She was able to escape and call police.
“Oquendo told OCSO deputies he was fighting the man in the mattress, holding him down when they arrived, but the man then slipped out and left,” the post read. “He admitted he had been smoking methamphetamine.”
The suspect was booked on suspicion of domestic violence related false imprisonment and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Jail records don’t list a lawyer for him.
A teacher ran out of sick days to stay with cancer-stricken daughter, so colleagues donated 100 days
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — David Green is a history teacher and a father to a 16-month-old girl who was diagnosed with cancer.
The Mae Jemison High School teacher didn’t have any more sick days that he could take to stay with his little girl, Kinsley. His daughter is getting treatment 100 miles from home and she needs him to be there when he can.
So, fellow educators in Huntsville, Alabama, chipped in with their sick days — it added up to 100 days.
“We were blown away with the response that we received with the sick days. We were hoping to get a couple days so he could be here once a week,” Megan Green, Kinsley’s mother, told CNN. “It is a huge blessing and we can’t wait until we are in the position to give back and help others.”
Kinsley was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia six months ago and has been going through treatment since then. She still has three to four months of inpatient treatment, but will remain in treatment for the next two years.
Green gets one sick day a month and the Green family needed 40 days, so his wife decided to post on Facebook and see whether teachers were willing to help and donate one sick day.
Wilma DeYampert, an assistant principal at Lakewood Elementary, works in the same school district with Green. She saw the story on Facebook and donated two days. They are the only days she can afford, as she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February.
“I could not imagine having a child and being away from the child,” DeYampert told CNN. “So, I just thought it was the right thing to do. My mom always said, ‘You don’t have to be rich to bless someone.’”
Most teachers in the United States get one sick day a month. A lack of paid leave has devastating consequences for teachers who can’t afford to take time off for personal sickness or the birth of a child.
Low wages make it impossible for teachers to save for unpredictable situations or emergency expenses. Almost half the teaching workforce lacks access to retirement benefits.
Goldsmith Schiffman Elementary was another school where many teachers came together to help Green.
“You want to send words of encouragement, you want to do something to help, but this was a real physical way that we could help him and his family,” Anna Kachelman, a first-grade teacher, told CNN affiliate WHNT.
