Anaesthetist killed wife and daughter ‘with gas-filled yoga ball’
An anaesthetist gassed his wife and daughter to death using a yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide, a Hong Kong court has heard.
Prosecutors told the High Court that Khaw Kim-sun left the inflatable ball in the boot of a car where the gas leaked out and killed them, according to reports from court Wednesday.
His wife and 16-year-old daughter were found on a roadside in a locked yellow Mini Cooper in 2015, in a case which initially baffled police.
The pair were certified dead at the same hospital where Khaw worked and a post-mortem concluded they had died from inhaling carbon monoxide.
Police found a deflated yoga ball in the back of the car.
Khaw cried Thursday as the pathologist who examined the bodies was called to testify and began to give details about the autopsy he carried out on his daughter, according to an AFP reporter in court.
Khaw has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.
Prosecutors had said Wednesday that Khaw, a 53-year-old Malaysian national, was having an affair with a student and his wife would not grant him a divorce.
They accused him of hatching a deliberate plot to murder his wife, the South China Morning Post reported.
Prosecutors said it was likely that Khaw had not intended to kill his daughter.
The court heard that in a police interview, Khaw had said he had urged his younger daughter to stay at home and finish her homework on the day of the deaths, according to Apple Daily.
Khaw had been seen filling two balls with carbon monoxide at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he was an associate professor, reports said.
He told colleagues he planned to use the gas on rabbits but later told police that he had taken it to get rid of rats at home.
The family’s domestic helper Siti Maesaroh told the court Thursday that the couple’s three other children had gone to school on the day of the deaths, but Lily was having a holiday.
She said the children had a good relationship with their parents.
Siti added that Khaw and his wife had separate bedrooms and cooked their meals separately, but said she did not know anything about their relationship.
The couple’s eldest daughter is due to testify Friday.

Drug tunnel ran from old KFC in Arizona to Mexico bedroom
US authorities have found a secret drug tunnel stretching from a former KFC in the state of Arizona to Mexico.
The 600ft (180m) passageway was in the basement of the old restaurant in San Luis, leading under the border to a home in San Luis Rio Colorado.
Authorities made the discovery last week and have arrested the southern Arizona building’s owner.
They were alerted to the tunnel after the suspect, Ivan Lopez, was pulled over, according to KYMA News.
During the traffic stop, police dogs reportedly led officers to two containers of hard narcotics with a street value of more than $1m in Lopez’s vehicle.
Investigators say the containers held more than 118kg (260lb) of methamphetamine, 6kg of cocaine, 3kg of fentanyl, and 19kg of heroin.
Agents searched Lopez’s home and his old KFC, discovering the tunnel’s entrance in the kitchen of the former fast-food joint.
The passageway was 22ft deep, 5ft tall and 3ft wide, and ended at a trap door under a bed in a home in Mexico, said US officials.
The drugs are believed to have been pulled up through the tunnel with a rope.
This is not the first such discovery – two years ago a 2,600ft tunnel was found by authorities in San Diego, California.
Authorities said it was one of the longest such drug tunnels ever discovered, used to transport an “unprecedented cache” of cocaine and marijuana.
In July alone, US Border Patrol seized 15kg of heroin, 24lbs of cocaine, 327kg of methamphetamine and 1,900kg of marijuana at border checkpoints nationwide.

Rapper Juelz Santana pleads guilty to gun charge, faces up to 20 years in prison
Rapper Juelz Santana admitted in court Thursday that he tried to get a gun onto a plane at a New York-area airport earlier this year.
Santana, whose real name is LaRon James, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a weapon on an aircraft. The 36-year-old Totowa resident faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 12.
Santana was arrested in March after security staff at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport found a loaded .38-caliber handgun and nonprescription oxycodone pills in a carry-on bag containing his identification on March 9.
Santana left the area, leaving two bags behind, but turned himself in three days later. He has been free on bail while awaiting trial.
In June, a judge modified his bail so that he could perform concerts in New Hampshire, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. Among the conditions were that Santana’s mother accompany him on the trips, that he drive instead of fly and that he not travel with other members of the tour.
While on bail, Santana also was allowed by the court to tape an episode of the VH-1 show “Love and Hip Hop” in Hoboken and New York.
This month, a judge postponed Santana’s original trial date of Sept. 4 so the rapper and his attorneys could continue negotiations on a plea deal.

Argument over Aretha Franklin reportedly leads to Virginia shooting
An argument over whether Halle Berry played Aretha Franklin in a movie reportedly led to a person being shot in Virginia.
The Suffolk Police Department is investigating the shooting which occurred around 10:43 a.m. at the intersection of East Washington Street and Liberty Street on Thursday, Aug. 16.
Witnesses told WTKR in Norfolk that the shooting was between two people who were arguing whether the Academy Award-winning actress ever played the Detroit icon in a movie. Police have not confirmed or denied that detail.
Franklin, The Queen of Soul, died in Detroit at the age of 76 on Thursday.
According to the Suffolk Police Department, the verbal altercation between two adult males turned physical. One of the subjects produced a firearm, shooting the other involved subject at least once.
Both subjects received emergency medical assessment and treatment by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel before being transported to local hospitals for further treatment.
The gunshot victim is in serious condition, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
Just in case you were wondering, Aretha Franklin said in a 2011 interview that she would want Halle Berry to play her in a biopic.

ICE agents set ‘trap’ for immigrants seeking legal residency
“…It’s our job to locate and arrest them.”
Two federal immigration agencies worked together in a coordinated effort to set deportation traps for unsuspecting immigrants seeking legal status, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) alleged in a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen this week.
According to the Boston Globe, the two agencies arranged meetings for the undocumented immigrants at government offices, where they were subsequently arrested, and in some cases deported.
According to e-mails obtained by the Globe between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and employees of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), ICE asked government officials to space out the meetings so that the public wouldn’t catch on and draw “negative media interests.”
“As far as scheduling goes, I would prefer not to do them all at one time as it is [not] only a strain on our ability to transport and process several arrests at once, but it also has the potential to be a trigger for negative media interests, as we have seen in the past,” Andrew Graham, an ICE officer, wrote to a USCIS employee in one email from October.
ACLU lawyers described the meetings as “traps.”
According to the Globe, the e-mails are part of the lawsuit against DHS Secretary Nielsen challenging the Trump administration’s practice of separating married couples as one spouse seeks legal status.
